Over here on holiday from the UK. Is there a cell phone which I can purchase here that will work in the UK.

That's the rub. You would have to pay a small premium to buy one here from a brick and mortar store, or be limited to used/old models via ebay or craigslist.

The other option would be for you to have someone buy you one online here via amazon, etc. Unlocked would mean you have an easier time back home using it.

Examples-
Nokia E5-00
Nokia C6
Nokia E72
Nokia E71 *lacks 3G frequency bands for UK

If the high price doesn't turn you away,
Nokia N8 *truly international, with all the global 3G frequency bands
