cant open images, possibly corrupted?

by ripcurl1969 / February 10, 2007 12:35 PM PST

i have similar problems to other people within certain forums here,
with pictures failing to load.
i have searched and searched for answers, i have tried irfanview, with no avail. please help!!!

im running xp home on an amd athlon. the pictures exist including details regarding the size of the image and the origional name with the extension .jpg. i have tried to change the extension but nothing changes. irfanview says "cant read the file header, unknown file format, file not found"

this problem may have occured when transferring the affected pictures onto a cd...but i am not sure.

i have also tried other programs to recover lost files but this didnt work, as the files actually exist but are un-openable if this makes scence.

any help would solve my headache with this problem

First, I would try
by PudgyOne / February 10, 2007 7:54 PM PST

to right click on the picture

select open with

choose program

select paint

See if the image opens. If it does, then do this again except this time check the box that says "always use the selected program to open this type of files."

If it does NOT open

The right click on the picture

choose open with

choose Internet Explorer

If picture opens,

right click on the picture and choose save as
change the bottom to bitmap. Then open the bitmap using paint and change it to a jpeg. You can then see and view the picture in question.

This is how I open a picture that I have trouble with. If there is an easier way, I'd like to know it too.

Hope this helps.

you tried IrfanView

Since you tried IrfanView (and I have to assume you did try it correctly*) and since IrfanView is among the best of opening pictures that are just a bit munged (messed up) then I would venture to say that your images are pretty much screwed.

(* Correctly? You do not need to associate any of the graphic file types to use IrfanView to view it. All you need to do is either:
1) Have IrfanView open and drag the graphic files into the opened window. OR
2) With IrfanView open, you can use the File>Open command, with the "Files of Type" selection just set to "All files" so that you can see all of the files, not just graphic related file types.

In either case, even though IrfanView may mentioned that the filename extension (if it is even there) is incorrect, you may tell IrfanView to open it regardless. You do not need to change the filename extension at all.

ripcurl1969, on a Mac, there is picture viewer. Anything like that on a PC?
If picture viewer can't open a file, that file probably is corrupt. Does the file have a small red box with an X on it up in the corner?
Tell-tale for corrupted files. Here is a wild guess. Try holding down the Control & Option key and open the file from the program you are using. Sometimes on a Mac we use the Command & Option key to open corrupted files found in Quark Express.

There is a good site to go to and join.
That site is really good and they have help forums on all kinds of digital editing software. Just a suggestion.

can view all common photo formats in a variety of modes including near full screen. There are also other applications built into Windows which can open photo files. I'm surprised by the question Kevin.

However, the best software in the world is not of much use if the file is corrupted.
