Question

Cannot delete a folder

by Jerdonald / March 22, 2013 1:38 PM PDT

XP Forum,

Windows XP NTFS

I have a folder that I want to delete but if I try I get
the error message:
"Cannot delete file: Cannot read from the source or disk".
I get the same error message in safe mode.

How do I delete this folder?

This is common for a few reasons. Some folders are protected so a name is needed.

R. Proffitt,

Thanks for the reply.
I don't quite know what you mean by it needs a name. I'm highlighting the file
icon, right clicking and selection "delete". I've checked and the file isn't set
to read only.

That icon you are highlighting ...

has a name - what is it?

Some directories are protected but without a NAME we can't know.

If you don't want to tell us try the right click again but instead of selecting delete try selecting PROPERTIES and see if system and read only might be checked.

Sounds like overkill.

Deleting a partition to delete a file? Sounds like overkill and since many can't recover their OS and files from such a delete, not a good idea.
