My best guess

Since the HD works as an internal, is it possible the external controller is just no longer able to access it? Have you tried to see if it turns up in the disk management utility as unpartitioned space and just needs to be partitioned and formatted while in the external case?

Is there a possiblility you moved the jumper when you put the drive in the other PC? It should work best using Cable Select in the external.

A few issues.
by R. Proffitt Forum moderator / February 20, 2005 11:16 PM PST

1. Many cases mandate USB 2.0 and too many laptops have only USB 1.1

2. Many owners get nicked by the fact the drive works in some PC. But are not told the drive may need to be partitioned and formatted in the USB case.

Your posts didn't tell if you knew of these issues.

Are the issues I see everytime. And I don't see any proof that these are not your issues. Too bad the forum tip isn't being followed. I can only guess that some don't see it on every posting. It reads " Tip: If you are asking for help to troubleshoot a computer-related problem, please be sure to include all the necessary information (ie: operating system, model number, hardware, software, etc) that will help others identify your problem for a speedy resolution."

The make/model of the laptop would help.

And that's the SECOND part of the common problems.
by R. Proffitt Forum moderator / February 22, 2005 4:43 AM PST

You write "i formatted the hard drive in my house mate computer and then put the hard drive back in to the enclousre and it still didnt work"

I know I wrote about that. But here is is again in case you missed it.

To prepare the drive proper, you put the drive in the enclosure and use the DRIVE MANAGEMENT (or could be called DISK MANAGEMENT) tool in XP to partition and format it.

Your procedure is improper and shouldn't work.

Also, it may fail if the laptop doesn't have drivers for XP.

In this case, looks like a bum unit.
by R. Proffitt Forum moderator / February 22, 2005 7:16 AM PST

I've noted the usual and since you don't see the drive in DISK MANAGEMENT, then the game is over. It's usually one of the common reasons I've noted, but since you covered those that leaves us with a defective device in the brew.
