Built-in micro SD card reader not working on my HP laptop

by Attman68 / September 6, 2008 10:42 AM PDT

Hi all,

I have a built-in card reader on the right side of my HP Pavilion zd8000 laptop. I placed my Micro SD card into the adapter it comes with, then place that into the card port. But, no nothing. Doesn't appear as any type of port or drive. Any tips? Maybe it's switched off by default or something? How do I get to it?

Card reader

Look in device manager under disk drives your reader(s) should appear there, click on the little box +- they should appear. If there is a yellow asterisk or question mark showing, there is an issue. There should be an option to update driver, you could give that a try. It could be several things but that is the easiest thing to check first.

Try downloading the latest driver from HP. I had the same problem and this worked for me. Or you can try using a USB card reader, you can get them anywhere for under $20.
Good luck

How I fixed my SD Card Reader
by Zuloc / January 8, 2011 12:07 PM PST

I went to the manufactures website for my Computer there was a firmware update for my SD Reader, I installed it. Then I went to my system folder in control Panel went to device manager and uninstalled the SD card Reader and rebooted my computer. When it rebooted, it reinstalled the device drivers for the SD Card reader, I was then able to read my 4GB SD card as the old firmware could only read 2GB SD cards so there was update to firmware to allow it.
