Black screen on start up, OK in safe mode.

by n6rjx / December 28, 2009 4:33 AM PST

Here's the problem, I've got a XP Pro (sp3) being used as a file server. After a reboot, the screen went black after the XP splash screen, and now it does it every time. The machine is still available to the users over the LAN.

Booting in safe mode or safe mode VGA displays properly.

Also, when booting from a Linux CD, the old screen resolution works fine.

Thanks for your help,
Dan

One more time to safe mode.

In safe mode change the screen setting to 800x600 and 60 Hz. Ok your way out and then Start, reboot and hope it's the usual. If there is some KVM we get to remove that.

resolution only VGA

I just tried logging in remotely, and trying to change to 600x800. It only has the 640x480, 4bit setting available.
I recall that when I was in front of the machine yesterday it wouldn't change, and this seems to confirm it.

A blown video driver. I can recreate this on older cards by trying to install newer drivers. Too many to list or recall but your method is not one I would have tried!

Call me old fashioned as I do this on the server.
