2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee - Stalls When Warm

by boomer415 / January 12, 2009 12:20 AM PST

We have a 2000 JGC and it runs great almost all the time; except for when the weather outside is warm or when it runs for a long period of time (gets good and warmed up). It doesn't matter if your are sitting idle or driving, it dies. It happens at stop lights, sometimes while driving down the road, it doesn't matter how full the tank is, it doesn't matter how fast or slow you are going, or if you're going at all, it still happens. It never happens when it is really cold outside or when you haven't been driving it for long. There are no error codes. I really need to get it fixed. Anybody out there have any ideas?

2000 JGC stalls when warm outside
by jdettlaff / April 24, 2009 6:31 AM PDT

I have a 2000 jeep GC 125000K. Last fall it started stalling on me while moving slow or fast, and while idle or stopped in park. As fall turned to winter the problem stopped but now that spring is here ONLY on warmer days 50 deg plus will it stall again, i replaced the crank shaft pos sensor. Oh, and when it does stall i pull over to the side try starting engine will crank but not start. and when I turn the key to the ON position none of the dash gauges move except for the battery gauge and that moves ever so slightly almost not noticeable. As I turn the key ON to OFF w/o trying the start, only when I turn it to the ON pos AND the guage work normally will it start. May take 30 seconds to 5 minutes of turning the key for the gauges to work. It must have something to do with over heating. I am fairly mech inclined, plus father is very capable but is also stumpped

Heres my situation. May car would randomly shut off while Im driving. Highways and local roads, stops and turns. No signs that the car was going to shut off. In the early stages it would just start back up and not do it again for the day. then, it started being more frequent and hesitate before starting again. Now it is to the point the other day where I drove it across the street to the car wash and couldnt get it started up. Even after a few hours it wouldnt turn over. Then after a while all I heard were clicks when I turned the key. My friend tried to come and give me a jump and it didnt work so we pushed the car back to my apartment and left it there to sit. 2 days later I go the car and it starts no problem and so I just drove it from the front of my complex to the back where I live. Now its just sitting there. What would cause it not to start up that day but start up 2 days later like nothing happened? The car couldnt have been warm because I only drove it 500ft from my apartment to directly across the street to the car wash and it wouldnt start up 20 minutes after I washed my car but did 2 days later? SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE?

V8 Jeep Grand Cherokee Stalling
by mannukaden / April 16, 2010 4:09 PM PDT

Did you solve your problem? How? Need Help
My1999 V8 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 4.7L V8 ? 1J4GW68N7XC689389- stalls and stops mostly in heavy traffic condition. stop and go at slow speeds. Some times it stops also on cruising at 80 or 90 kmph. It happens about 3 to 4 times a day at slow speeds or cruising. what I have noticed as engine stalls and Check Gages light is on. Initially all gages looks ok. Within 2 or three seconds fuel gage shows Empty and security KEY sign is on. If you leave it these for 5 or 10 minutes and keep ignition on, if fuel gauge moves (showing not empty) it will start and you can drive off. If traffic is heavy it may stall again after a kilometer or so. If you can drive at about 80Kmph it goes for about 30 to 40 minutes and stall again. Twice I gave it to two different agency workshops and got the wiring checked and cleaned. On both occasions it worked without any stalling for 5 days and started to stall again. In both occasions there was no error code displayed when checked with computer. When stalling occurs and fuel gauge shows empty; the computer shows NO Communication with PCM.
Stalling problem is not there in winter on Highways. I can drive 500 to 600 km in one go. But as soon as it enters heavy city traffic it stalls with loss of power and fuel gage shows Empty along with other gauges.
I Got crank position sensor replaced at the workshop but problem persists. Also tried swapping of the ASD and fuel pump relay. Checked all cleaned all wiring harness. Still problem is existing for almost 2 years now. If Batteries are removed overnight, it generally behaves ok (Not Always) for 3 or 4 days and problem reappears.

Same Symptoms - Any luck Fixing?
by d-shot / December 23, 2010 8:43 AM PST

99 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7L V8 - I have many of the problems that everyone else has posted. I couldn't pass smog and when I went to mechanic, they told me it was my IAC Motor. Paid $200 and replaced that and still kept tripping "check engine" light. Took it to Jeep Dealership and they told me my PCM was bad. Paid $800 to replace that, and had no problem passing smog. Weeks later, we began to experience the intermittent stalling. I replaced crankshaft sensor, and had no luck. Called Jeep Dealership and they told me that if the PCM was bad, it would throw a check engine light.... I am taking it back to them and having them troubleshoot the PCM. Never had stall problem until they replaced PCM.

Jeep Stalling
by nopathatall / October 13, 2015 10:04 AM PDT

I had a similar problem with my 1998 JGC. You should check for a faulty ground, Sounds like yours is related to a thermal issue. I cleaned all the connections including where the lugs clamp onto the positive and ground wires at the battery. Then I ran a heavy grounding cable from the lug to a screw on the inside of the fender. Problem solved.

but guess what, no one in this site will tell you anything after they fixed their problem, i cant be impossible for noone to find a fix after people posted for years, they just fix it and dnt give a xxxx about other people with the same problem. if it helps to you i already repplaced my ecm that is the computer of my jeep and nothing changed yet, and gues what your jeep will do it even with the engine not running, all it takes is to leave your ignition on and your gauges will freeze and drop. good luck and i hope i helped alil bit

Jeep Grand Cherokee Stalling
by TommyBeavan / April 30, 2014 2:42 AM PDT
In reply to: jeep stalling

My 2000 jeep Grand Cherokee stalls then starts after letting the car sit there for 5 to 10 Minutes, like nothing happened for weeks at a time. Does this every once in a while. I spoke with a friend of mine who had a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee that did the same thing. After taking the car in to her mechanic who did not charge her any money, he was a close friend of her. The problem was isolated to the electronic car system. The only place to get it repaired is at the dealership at a cost of $1, 500, so she traded the car in.
Hope this helps, it happened the other night on a busy 2 lane highway where the cars go 60 MPH. I cannot afford to get another car.

Jeep stalls hard to start - Vapor Lock
by nopathatall / October 13, 2015 10:10 AM PDT

My 1998 JGC L6 vapor locks when it idels for an extended period. It seems like it gets too hot under the hood and the fuel vaporizes in the fuel rail. I release the pressure from the schraeder valve and then it starts easily. Still working on a way to prevent it. I am going to change the Fuel Filter and see if that helps.

Jeep Stalling unexpectedly
by andersen63 / November 17, 2010 6:11 AM PST
In reply to: pcu

Hi there,

PCU = Jeep's brain...the computer that runs all the electronic stuff. Also known as PCM...As for the unexpected stalling...We have replaced all modules, and sensors; just recently found out that this particular model jeep (Grand Cherokee) has a faulty wiring harness and that is very difficult to replace. If you can fine one - it's gonna run around 850.00$ Newer models (1998+) may still have parts out there for replacement. Even the Jeep dealerships have trouble finding or making harnesses for the older models.

Hope this info helps.

stalling frustration
by tolzmann_01 / December 23, 2010 10:30 AM PST

sounds like some of you could have a faulty ignition coil, the thing that makes the spark plugs spark... i have seen this problem a few times. they work fine untill they get warm, electronics don't like heat. most of the time its a crack in the case or just faulty... hope it helps

2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee stalling issue

Have you had luck replacing the igniion coil and the stalling stops? We are having the same issue as the others, but can't afford to put $850 into a Jeep with 202,000 miles on it. Thank you for your help!

Stalling problem also
by Annedethann / January 19, 2011 11:53 AM PST

We have a 1996 Jeep Grd Cherokee and have experienced exactly the same symptoms. First place told us to change the spark plugs and wires, then to change the ignition coil to cylinder #1, second place changed the ignition coil for cylinder #1 again! The car is still having the same symptoms: stalls whether driving or stopping, starts again if we let the car cool down a bit.
A note I read on a forum seemed to present an easy fix and maybe a valid way to solve the problem: haven't tried it yet, not too keen as we have never worked on the car ourselves but this time to avoid the expense of changing a $800 PCM on a 170,000miles car we might consider it. The person said to change the screws inside the PCM and replace them with shorter screws as the originals are too long and end up cracking the motherboard.
Has anybody tried that?

Issues with 98 jeep Cherokee stalling or shUtting off
by Littleone1990 / March 18, 2012 10:19 AM PDT

This happened to me I've been dealing with my 98 jeep Cherokee for the last six months and replaced everything on it map sensor as well as replacing all sensors on truck ignition coil, fuel pump exshust radiater, spark plugs PCM twice cavillitic converter , muffler, fixed wiring, did bolt twist new battery , everything ! Then got my transmission fluid flushed and replaced and since I did that it hasn't had one problem ! Just wanted to let everyone know that could possibly be the problem causing the tramission throttle not getting enough air if its clog or old fluid

by Jeepster4yourlove / July 9, 2014 12:42 AM PDT

I think i have the same problem. Bought my 99 JGC new in 99 just starting having that problem last summer. Checked with my mechanic he found no error codes and it would not do it for him but did it later several times for me. It did not do it in the the winter months and I had had my oil, trans fluid and diff oil changed this spring. Now that summer is here it doing it again. If i am lucky i can catch it and race the engine in neutral until traffic is moving but that does not always work.

think about the gas that you are putting in it
by dpetty40 / June 1, 2014 10:42 PM PDT

gas stations sell gas now with up to 10% ethanol which is basically alcohol. when its in a warm fuel line it can turn to water and boil inside the fuel line. this causes air bubbles and the engine and fuel delivery system will vapor lock or seize. try to find gas stations that don't have ethanol or try gas treatment for water in the gas.

by sMUGGSKIER / September 15, 2014 12:57 PM PDT
In reply to: Think about the fuel

After looking at all the posts I decided to give replacing my Crankshaft Position Sensor... This fixed the intermittent stalling issues.. So far, three days without a stall.. Yahooooo!!! Fifty Dollars and the issue was resolved! I replaced my CPS from the inside of the car and removing the lower dash.. Pretty easy with the online help that I found... Still took my son and i 4 hours to do, but am glad we took the project on.. No more stalling in the middle of traffic....
