The top 5 launch titles
We usually try to have a list of the top 10 games that are available when a new game console launches. However, there are only 9 games currently available for the GameCube as of the launch date. Nintendo promises that 19 titles will be available by year's end. So instead of 10, here are the top 5 titles we consider surefire winners (with a few honorable mentions thrown in for good measure):

5. Super Smash Bros. Melee (Nintendo)
Think of this as a fighting game for Nintendo fans. It's Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Pikachu, and a host of Nintendo characters in an all-out brawl. As unusual as it may sound, the game is bound to hook you, with its simple controls and even simpler beat-'em-up action.

Who ya gonna call? Well, not the Ghostbusters apparently. Luigi inherited a haunted mansion, and Mario has gone missing. The solution: strap a special Hoover that sucks up spirits to your back and clean some otherworldly clocks. This title looks beautiful, but the gameplay is hardly revolutionary; you solve puzzles, beat back spooks, and make your way through the mansion.

3. Super Monkey Ball (Sega)
The concept of this game makes absolutely no sense: a monkey locked in a see-through ball needs to navigate through mazes. But with a game this much fun, who cares? There are countless puzzle levels to solve, and better still are the minigames that need to be unlocked, such as monkey racing, monkey fighting, bowling, billiards, and golf. This is the best party game for the GameCube.

![]() | 2. Pikmin (Nintendo)
This is an easy pick for a fantastic and wonderfully unique title. You're a Lilliputian astronaut stranded on an alien world. In order to get off that planet, you draft the locals, Pikmin, to help you fight off enemies, build bridges, and knock down walls. It's an unusual but very addictive puzzle-solving game. While not technically a launch title, it will be available early in December.
