Wal-Mart to start selling Boxee TV set-top box
The cloud-based DVR retails for $99 and includes an antenna that also lets you watch over-the-air live television.
Boxee has just won a big one.
Wal-Mart tomorrow will start carrying the $99 Boxee TV set-top box at 3,000 locations nationwide. Bloomberg, which was first to report on the news, spoke with Boxee CEO Avner Ronen, who said that the Wal-Mart partnership could deliver "a big launch" for his set-top box.
Boxee announced the product earlier this month, calling it a "No Limits DVR." The device, which connects to a television set, has no onboard storage but acts as a DVR thanks to cloud storage. In addition, over-the-air television programming can be watched due to its built-in antenna.
With the antenna, users can record over-the-air programming right from the device. However, in order to get the DVR features, users will need to pay $14.99 a month for access.
Boxee announced earlier this month that the No Limits DVR will be available in eight markets to start, with more rolling out in 2013.
The Boxee TV follows the company's earlier Boxee Box, a set-top device that was largely ignored outside geeky circles. The Boxee TV attempts to appeal more to the average consumer. And it appears Wal-Mart is seeing that.
