While the Microsoft-watching world awaits Windows Vista, the company is readying development tools optimized to make Vista applications.

The next version of its flagship Visual Studio product is code named Orcas. Vista will have the .Net Framework 3.0, Windows Communication Foundation for building Web services applications, and Windows Presentation Foundation, which will allow developers to take advantage of Vista's new look.

One of the most significant releases from Microsoft tools division this year was Visual Studio Team System, a group development product line which Microsoft created to sell into large corporations.

Like competitors at IBM and Borland, Microsoft is making collaborative development a high priority for its tools line. The company is working on the follow-on story to its initial Visual Studio Team System, which is code-named Rosario, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the version of Visual Studio after Orcas, which is expected shortly after the release of Windows Vista, is code-named Hawaii.
