We're not talking about a team of dancing zombies; we mean a team of friends to form her Zombie Preparedness task force. Because it is Zombie Preparedness Day. We also bring it with some open-source good news for DVR builders, and the Linux folks talking tough to Microsoft.

Tom,
I love the show, and while we disagree on certain subjects, I
appreciate your experience and opinions.
However, this is not the case when you are discussing Blu-ray and
Netflix. On a personal note, I can’t believe that you are holding out
on Blu-ray … it’s great. And since you don’t have a PS3 or
standalone Blu-ray player I don’t think you should be commenting (as
if you have real world daily experience) on supposedly equal
alternatives.
It all boils down to one argument I’ve heard from you more than once.
You suggested on Tuesday’s show that Netflix HD streaming is a viable
alternative to Blu-ray. First of all the quality of the Netflix
streams that are actually labelled “HD” are DVD quality at best, and
that’s being generous (I checked again last night to make sure it
hasn’t improved). Second, you know that the availability of new
releases on Netflix streaming(the area that Blu-ray shines) is
virtually non-existent.
I’ve been a Netflix customer since Jan 2000 and I love it, but their
streaming as it currently exists will never even replace my need for
physical DVD.
I feel that in this one small but important area you are doing your
listeners a disservice, particularly the ones who are on the fence and
trust your opinions as fact.
And Natali, it made me really sad to hear you read that letter from
the disgruntled listener. don’t let people get you down.
Eric from NYC

My opinions above are based on using this equipment:
Panasonic Viera 1080i 37″ Plasma
Tivo Series 3 HD connected via HDMI (used for Netflix streaming)
Sony PS3 for Blu-ray via HDMI
TWCNYC 15MBPS cable/internet
On yesterday show, there was a call to arms/request for more
Linux/Unix/BSD/etc… stories. Well, I know I sent this in yesterday, but
since it might’ve fallen through the cracks of all the April Fools’
nonsense, I decided to resubmit it.
Yesterday, on Planet Ubuntu (http://planet.ubuntu.com/) the distro’s
community’s Blog feed, the Mythbuntu DVR/Media Center Team made a huge
announcement which scores a major victory for Linux users everywhere.
They have scored an arrangement/deal with both Time Warner AND Comcast (of
all companies) for them to offer support for their CableCards in the 9.04
release.
Here is a snippet of the announcement:
“Today marks a historic day in Mythbuntu development. Over the last year
we have been having discussions with several major cable companies in the
United States regarding enabling CableCARD support for all Mythbuntu
users. Late last year we reached an agreement with two of those major
companies, Time Warner & Comcast…Due to the difficulties in defining how
CableCARD support will work on Mythbuntu, it is only launching with the
ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable tuner [1]. These are the first products that
are being certified for CableCARD support on Mythbuntu, but expect others
to follow.
To start off, you will have to pick up an ATI TV Wonder Digital Cable
tuner…Next, contact your cable support specialist to schedule a time for
a technician to come and drop off a CableCARD in your home. For your
convenience, Time Warner and Comcast have allocated specialists
specifically for the expected call load…You may have heard of problems
with technicians refusing to install CableCARDs in anything that was not a
television set in the past. Per the terms of this agreement, all
contracted technicians have specific instructions to assist with
installation on Mythbuntu regardless of circumstances. If your technician
gives you a hard time, refer him to this URL.”

Hey Buzz Crew:
This is Siavash, I'm a Cisco trained IT Engineer in Iran and I've been sending many mails to you that some got to the show so you may remember me.
About the Helicopter Story, generally Iranian people don't approve what the government does; please don't think of me as a terrorist listenerJ.
Kidding aside I did a little of digging in Iranian ISPs and the whole Iranian IP range and the IP that had hacked into the computer, as long as I can say, the IP belongs to a ISP, they say the IP has been dedicated to VPN connection and as their Log shows the VPN has been established somewhere in Middle East, (they don't say exactly where). So as I get it, either some one from Middle East has hacked into their servers, and used their IP address to hack the computer in USA , or there has been someone ( maybe Iranian) in middle east with access to this ISP and their servers and used their network to hack the computer.
So now all I can say is that the attack has not been inside Iran, but the identity of the hacker and it's location is still a mystery, I will do more digging on this and I will get back to you with any new and fresh info.
Love The SHOW!
Best Regards
Siavash

Hi Buzzers,
You discussed in Episode 922 that the new Mac Mini has DVI instead of HDMI, and that very few HDTVs have DVI any more. That’s true, but DVI and HDMI are pretty much the same standard - it’s just that DVI only carries the video signal, and HDMI carries both video and audio together. So if you get a DVI to HDMI cable and connect it from a Mac Mini to an HDTV, it should send an HD signal just fine. You’ll just have to find some other way to handle the audio (like hooking up the audio out jack to the optical audio input on your receiver).
I agree, though - Apple should just get on the stick and add HDMI (and what’s with this “Mini DVI” port, anyway?)…
Love the show,

I’m going to combine feedback around two bits from episode 922 when you referred to the unlikeliness of top notch technology from government (e.g. whitehouse.gov ) and challenges presented by open source research models (e.g. Merck’s Sage). I work for a company that provides IT support to the National Cancer Institute where Dr. Ken Buetow has led an effort to establish an open framework for cancer research to expedite discoveries. Check out the CAncer Biomedical Informatics Grid (caBIG) @ https://cabig.nci.nih.gov to see how government technology can be top notch and scientific research tools and framework open source.

Hey I have an idea?
WiMax hope from Waco, Texas
Hey Buzz crew, while listening to show 687 I was shocked to hear that Garth Freeman said that he was giving up on WiMax. I have had Clearwire now for two year and it works great for me! When I was looking at houses last year I even drove around town using it to look up houses and directions and I have not experienced any real issues with my service. It has always worked for me so Tom don’t lose your hope quite yet.

More from the Nielsen Guy
I’ve written and called a few times in the past, but I think they were nonNielsen items.
I don’t know anything about capturing viewing in Bars, but there is an extended household sample that keeps tracks of college students in dorms and the like.
The project Molly was thinking of was the Portable People Meter, which was a joint venture with Arbitron. Participants carried a pager sized meter that picked up on a coded audio signal in TV and Radio broadcasts. There may have been a GPS element as well but I can’t remember. As far as I know the test project ended a few months back, and I am not sure if there will be any other work with that tech. That isn’t my department. There is an iPod meter being tested somewhere, but again I don’t deal with that aspect of the biz.
