BOL 1053: Stay healthy, stay fat

by Tom Merritt

Sure Apple has made their September 9 announcement official, and yeah Disney is buying Marvel and will soon own Spider-man. But we're most concerned about RIBA the robot bear who's coming to get our unhealthy thin humans. Protect yourself! Keep out of beds and wheelchairs and for heaven's sake stay over 135 pounds!

Hey Buzzies,

I always hear about how Natali is always breaking iPhones, and I just came accross this story on engadget with an impressive video of an iPhone protective sleeve that can protect the phone from a 2 story drop and a hard throw at a wall due to being made of a specially engineered, non-newtonian material, here is a link to the story, watch the video it’s quite impressive:

http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/31/video-tech21s-iband-protective-case-and-its-mystical-magical/#continued

Hope that is helpful to Natali

Dear Buzz crew,

I just saw on TV the new commercial for “The Shack” about how they sell more phones than the population of Scandinavia. Big deal really. However, as I’m watching the commercial there are these huge mountains in the background and dancing phones with yellow braids and people-phone-things yodelling. Umm … the Alps are in *Switzerland*, not Scandinavia. They don’t yodel in Scandinavia and there aren’t even any huge mountains (Norway has some, but not like the Alps). I’m so infuriated!

Okay, maybe I’m biased … I am a Scandinavian Studies student after all. But hey, how does that mistake pass so many people? Hopefully someone on the Buzz crew can sympathise with me.
Love the show!

BOL 1049: The Pirate Bay will never die.... and neither will SCO

Monarchy, mercantilism, and Talmudic tech are on the table today. We get a little obscure in our references...at least I do...but Leo and Brian keep us on track talking about the new Sony Reader, and how the Pirate Bay is unkillable. In bad news, SCO is back, and this time it's personal.

Buzz Crew,

I’m one of those very few users that have a smart phone (AT&T Tilt) without a data plan. I want the phone for other purposes that do not require the plan. I bought it used and I am not under contract. Is it your understanding that they will force ME to add a data plan, even though I’m not under contract?

By the way, within a few minutes of moving your SIM card to another phone, the AT&T website will change to show that your phone is the one into which you have installed the SIM card. My family has been “swapping” phones around a little bit lately and I was amazed at how fast they detected the change.

Hi Guys,
I just wanted to show you guys my Buzz Out Loud OS X Dashboard Widget. It’s simple, but it’s great for listening to BOL streaming without opening [another] tab or iTunes. It’s called BOL Dash (Buzz Out Loud For OS X Dashboard… obvious). It comes in two versions, BOL Dash and my personal favorite, BOL Dash Mini which is the same as BOL Dash but it takes up less space on your dashboard. You can find them here: http://dashbol.weebly.com/ I know it’s not a great site but I made it fast to host the widgets. They are completely free so I’d love it if you would mention them on your show or better yet, put it on the BOL blog page.
Thanks,
Alex aka alexthekid from the chat, although I’m not in it as often anymore:-(

Dear Buzz crew:
This is Siavash from Iran, remember my updates from Iran? Here is a new one and a very hot one.
Yesterday, my cousins phone rang and there was a private number, she picked it up and a man said, you have been updating your Facebook and sending emails about what was going on inside Iran, mentioning her name, her husband and her children, he said if you don't stop sending emails and Facebook updates and pictures about Iran's political and election issues we will arrest you and your husband and your child.

So I searched so much to find out what is going one, and it seems they have been able to access passwords of those using Gmail, hotmail and Yahoo mail, so they could check their mails and ... , but they could not find any Facebook passwords and any other personal host and domain names like the mail address I use.

So, my question is, why? Why Yahoo, Hotmail and Gmail are giving out passwords to Iran's government and department of security? They are not supposed to, passwords are very confidential information and they should not betray people who trust these services. There is nothing mentioned in terms of agreement when you want to open an email account on any of these site and they promise you to keep it safe and protected? Ouh REALLY?

PS: I'm a security geek and I'm sure they can not track my emails , so be sure, I'm safe.

Best Regards

Siavash

I was curious about the cost of an NYTimes subscription on the new Kindle vs paper delivery, so I did a little math.

Kindle subscription: $13.99/month = $167.88/year
Paper subscription, NY metro area = $5.30/week = $275.60/year ($107.72 diff.) [aside: Dude, we save less than $2/week here? WTF?]
Paper subscription outside NYC = $6.70/week = $348.40/year ($180.52 diff.)

The cost of a Kindle DX is $489. Assuming you buy one and ONLY use it to read the NYT:

$489/107.72 = 4.5 years to pay for itself for a NYC native
$489/180.52 = 2.7 years to pay for itself in the rest of the country.

It’s still a lot of money, obviously, but a device that pays for itself in 3 years isn’t really so bad. And if other papers are priced comparably, that could go down quite a bit depending on how much you read. If you replace three newspapers with Kindle subscriptions, the big Kindle could pay for itself in a year or less.

On the other hand, my laptop reads NYTimes.com for free (in color!) AND is also a computer, and I already own it. So there’s that.

Anyway, just had to share my overthinking with someone!

Love the show,
Jessica in Brooklyn

How about this for irony? I replaced my desktop PC and Dell laptop recently with a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro. I use Windows frequently on both of these machines for work and such. Seems that the machines that I replaced did not have processors that would support XP mode on Windows 7, but both of my Macs do support it.

I can see the marketing campaign now: PC: I have a new version of Windows coming out; it's great. MAC: Well, I can run it better than you.

Love the show.

Hey Buzz crew,
I’ve been listening for years now and I have finally decided to write
you all an email. For almost a year now I’ve heard on BOL how many of
you have complained about AT&T and the 3G data service and coverage. I live in Tampa FL, and have been blessed with amazing fast and reliable 3G service but I recently went to Chicago on business and was affected by what I thought was a myth. I am not sure if it was the tall buildings or what, but downtown Chicago has the worst 3G service ever! The phone kept switching from 3G to EDGE to no data at all, even if I
was just standing still!!! The worst part about it was this constant searching for a data network absolutely killed my battery life and my iPhone never made it to the end of the day. So for all you BOL listeners like me who thought people were full of BS for complaining about the iPhone/AT&T 3G coverage I am hear to tell you some people are really hurting when it comes to data service. Oh, and to top it all off the silent on/off switch on the side of my iPhone above the volume rocker completely broke off!!! And all I was trying to do was switch it to silent mode before a meeting started.

Love the show guys,

German A. Gonzalez

Sorry to spoil your fun, but I was listening to the earnings call and Tim Cook did not say “cracked keyboards”, he said “cramped keyboards”, and that is what is written in the article linked off the show notes. Perhaps you’d like to go back and have re-rant on today’s show based on this new information.

Tom the Plumber - Here’s how a black hole will kill you

I Miss Molly

E-MAIL
Hello JaNaToX and the Buzz Brigade

(The X is for the guest host, although Mondays are Molly,
so it should be JaNaToMo, but I digress…)

Jason’s back and so is the album artwork!

Some thoughts on the Russian OS:
It could be a fully localised version of one or more
Linux distributions, where both the interface and
documentation is in Russian. I’m not aware of how
far the community-driven localisation has progressed.

In India, the government has funded projects to translate
and localise both Linux and OpenOffice. And mind you,
this involves 15-18 languages! A Debian-derived
distribution called Bharat Operating System Solutions or
BOSS Linux is already available (http://bosslinux.in),
while CDAC, the national computing research establishment,
is working on a localised version of OpenOffice called
BharateeyaOO.o (meaning Indian OpenOffice.org in Hindi).
(See http://www.ncb.ernet.in/bharateeyaoo/details.shtml)

And I fully agree with Tom that governments should be
sceptical (if not paranoid) about proprietary software that
they might need to use. Imagine Russia was using an OS
made in Ukraine, and in the recent gas (natural gas, not gasoline)
dispute, this software vendor decided to push an update to just
Russia crippling the TCP/IP stack. It is certainly possible with
today’s IP Geolocation technology; the only question is how finely
one can tune the “attack” so as to reduce collateral damage and
the resulting bad publicity.

Just my thoughts on the matter.

On episode 896, you mentioned that Seagate is claiming that they’ve
fixed the firmware issue for the 7200.11 drives.

You asked for reports from listeners of any continuing troubles, which
I’m more (less) than happy to provide:

While Seagate has issued a firmware fix to upgrade existing functional
drives, or drives that were bricked by the faulty update, there’s no
way to fix drives that failed prior to the firmware release, such as
my 1TB drive. The issue with drives that bricked prior to the
announcement is that they don’t appear in your BIOS, and are therefore
inaccessible by the firmware update utility.

Of course, Seagate has been quoted several times in the media as
saying they’ll provide free data recovery for bricked drives. The
unfortunate truth is that when I called about this, their support team
didn’t know about this offer, but told me that I would hear from
supervisor “soon”. That was last week. I called back and was simply
told that my request was “escalated”, however the person I spoke with
couldn’t provide any more information, including who was handling
escalations, how to get ahold of them or when I might hear from them.
All emails to the support line just result in automated responses
about the firmware update that won’t resolve my issue.

Frustrated in Cleveland,
Derek

I figured by Monday you'll be talking about the Consumer survey that claims that Google uses 21 times more bandwidth then it pays for, and I wanted to chime in.

First of all, the numbers are right. The costs are drastically different between what I pay and what Google pays for bandwidth, but Its comparing apples to oranges, consumers to business... of course the numbers are going to be dramatically different.

The company doesn't even get "Costco level" economics. You buy a jar of peanut butter at the grocery store you pay one price, but if you buy a two gallon jar at Costco, you get a much better cost per weight and comparatively Google buys jars as big as your house.

Their conclusion shows just how little this company understands their own numbers. Using the peanut butter example, they look at Google's massive jar and then their own and are shocked by the fact Google's rates are a lot better then theirs. Rather then put their blame on the ISP's for their apparent shafting, they point the finger at Google cause they buy in bulk and say they're not paying their fair share.

The fact is everyone is paying their fair share, its just that anyone who wants Google's rates will have to pay mortgage on their peanut jar. Ok... so the analogy is getting a little wonky here, but you get the point.

These 'facts' are being used in a net neutrality argument regarding infrastructure costs... but the problem is what it always has been... ISP's are bottle necked at the 'last mile' and Google's express lane to the still free flowing internet backbone has absolutely no effect on the problem the ISP's got themselves into by overselling and saturating their connections at the local level and now want someone else to foot the bill.

This is Jerry, the US Navy Seabee serving in Italy. Please inform
CMDR Mark that if e-mailing him the show doesn't work out, I would be

As a "Dirt Sailor," I would be more than happy to help a shipmate

deployed to Iraq my wife would shoot video of her and our baby boy
each month and mail a DVD to me. The significance of those DVDs &
what the did to keep me going can not be overstated. Perhaps Buzz Out
Loud will not hold such a high significance for CMDR Mark but it would
be one more thing to look forward to and help to time fly by.

Keep up the great work,

Hey Buzz Crew,
I often hear you (especially Tom and Molly) discussing, as a group, households that have a second TV that is antenna-only. I’ve always wondered, but never bothered to ask--why? No, not why wouldn’t they subscribe to cable--I didn’t for the first 22 years of my life--but why, if you subscribe to cable, would you hook it up to one TV and not the other? I mean seriously, who doesn’t know how to use a splitter in 2008? I’m somewhat confused by the idea of a “back-room” TV in the first place, but if you have one, why not just use a splitter and run cable to both? I have a 13-inch TV purchased in 1992 in my bedroom, and without cable hooked up to it, the picture is completely unclear and not worth watching. I guess that’s my version of a “back-room” TV, but with cable I can clearly pick up about 90 percent of the cable channels to which I subscribe. Realizing that perhaps some people are afraid to deal with wires, I should note that my cable provider, which is absolutely awful, was willing to perform this service for me if I did not know how to do it myself! Therefore, I am confused. Why have cable on one TV and not on the other? Do any of you actually do this, or are you just assuming that people do this? Please let me know. Great show. Thanks.

Hey buzz brigade,

It's Scott, a listener from way back in the 790s. Just thought I would let you know about an experience I had today with Wal-Mart and the copyright laws we all know and love so very much.

I bought Rock Band 2 for the Playstation 3 from Wal-Mart on Tuesday. I then saw it for a lower price online, so, being the cheapskate I am, I ordered it online then tried to return the copy I got at Wal-Mart. I proceeded to find, when I went to return it, that because of “Federal Copyright law” they could not allow me to return it and get my money back. I could, however, exchange it for another copy or so that’s what the lady in “Customer Service” said. So, I just took the game back home with me and I’m thinking of an Ebay auction or stopping by Ebgames to see if I can get anything for it. I know Molly will say “Just cancel the online order!” Well, it's already shipped and unless I want to pay 15 percent restocking fee and return shipping cost I end up with two copies.

Now for a small rant. I can see this law affecting returns on PC games, but consoles? I mean, come on! Sure, you could rip a PC game with ease or at least install it, find a no CD crack. But a console?! Especially the PS3! I mean, there is no way I’m spending 300-plus dollars for a Blu-Ray drive, and even then there is no way (that I know of) for running it the copy or even an ISO off the hard drive!! GAH!! OK, that should be enough

Love the show. Keep it up.

By the way, Rock Band 2 is awesome.

Nothing found in the wild……….yet!

(SPAM)

Research has established that on-line pornography plays an accessory role in negative social issues, such as child abuse, violence against women, rape, inequality, relationship and family breakdown, youth crime, promiscuity and sexually transmitted diseases. Parents today have a legitimate concern about what their children will be exposed to and the damage online pornography can do.

Statistics reveal that Pedophiles (adults engaged in sexual crimes against children) have easy access to children through the Internet.

Child molesters are using the electronic superhighway to look for victims.
The Internet is the pedophiles’ playground, because it affords them
anonymity, and they can use newsgroups, chat rooms, and e-mail to
exchange information about child pornography and interact with children.
There are computer bulletin boards set up specifically for the seduction of children. They lure kids in with games and establish relationships with them on-line.
Then they arrange to meet face-to-face. Chat rooms and instant/private
messages are two main tools pedophiles use to contact children on-line.
Pedophiles use the Internet to share “trade secrets,”
i.e. how to change identities, forge passports, and smuggle children.

Pedophiles use the Internet for “virtual validation”
of their activities within their circles of fellow pedophiles, so they feel accepted
and consider their sexual interest in children normal.

In episode #772, you mention the additional problems with not having
other people with access to the admin password for a network. To be
the devil’s advocate, I have been in many situations where there
really was nobody competent enough to trust with the password
(especially in small organizations). However, that brings up problems
[such as], should I get hit by the proverbial bus (or get thrown into jail)?

My solution was to (surprise, surprise) use software to avoid the
problem. I set up a script which e-mails me every week, with a link
embedded in the message. If I click the link and enter the password,
everything stays normal. However, if I haven’t clicked the link and
confirmed my existence after 2 days, it will e-mail the password out to
high-level individuals (like a mayor) who could turn it over to the
new hire replacing me. Now all I need to make it do is send e-mails
from the grave!

Love the show,
Morgante
