BOL 1086: Beating a dead parse

by Tom Merritt

Mozilla is upset about the browser ballot screen because it's alphabetical, left to right, by manufacturer. That means Apple gets the prime spot. We think that's parsing the screen too closely. So we decide to parse it even more! And we also reinvent battery technology and solve America's Internet problems. And can you believe it? We even do more. It's true.

Hey guys (and girls)!

I have an iPhone 3gs an an apple headset but when I’m on a call and
start my car it will ALWAYS disconnect any Bluetooth devices from my
phone and hijack the connection…

It’s kinda nice though Bering into the car and having everything
change over, the problem is when you get out you have to manually try
to reconnect a Bluetooth device before it will work – thus is not
always easy…

I was catching up on my podcasts and heard you discussing a penny-sized nuclear battery that had 6 times more charge than a conventional battery.
Turns out that story originates from the University of Missouri, my place of employment!

Un-cited quote:
"To provide enough power, we need certain methods with high energy density," said Jae Kwon, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at MU. "The radioisotope battery can provide power density that is six orders of magnitude higher than chemical batteries." And it’s perfectly safe.

Notice that’s not 6 times more charge, its 6 ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE more charge (sorry for yelling, I’m excited). Now my Furby can chatter on forever!

After hearing Texas Instruments threatened individuals who hacked their TI calculators, I began to wonder why would Texas Instruments even care. In my mind, other than being completely ignorant to the potential of the benefits of hacking, there are only two reasons why Texas Instruments would care.

1. The software programs offered on the more recent versions of the TI family don’t require the CPU processors or Ram that they currently have. If you are able to hack the calculator and import the TI-89 version on the software on a TI-83 version, you have now better calculator without them getting the additional payments. (Which, if true, is sad because they would rather protect their old technology than innovate and develop a brand new standard for calculators)

2. They are protecting the ability for their calculators to be considered “approved” for standardized testing. If hacks are available, they may feel they could lose that “approved” branding, which would hurt their sales dramatically.

(One could make the argument of preventing students from flashing a library of game-boy games onto the calculator and making it the best hidden video game toy in the school system. But games have been available for at least 10 years now on the TI-brand of calculators.)

Either way, these actions are surprising for a company that was voted by Business Ethics as one of the top 100 corporate citizens in 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007

Hi Buzz Crew,

Just had to report a strange occurrence involving bluetooth, an iPhone
and a Toyota Prius:

My wife and I were both driving home from the gym. I was engaged in a
phone call (using my iPhone and a bluetooth earpiece). She was
following a few car lengths back in our new bluetooth-equipped Toyota
Prius. Suddenly my phone call ended. I chalked it up to typical
cellphone dropped calls. But in fact here’s what happened. Our Prius
was close enough behind my car that its built-in bluetooth paired with
my iPhone, effectively hijacking the call. My wife said she was
listening to the radio and was interrupted by my friends voice asking
“are you still there?”

Anyway… thought it was an interesting story.

Hi Buzz crew,

Happy birthday cellphone! Apparently, it was 25 years ago today that
people made the first regular-service cellphone call. The differences
really put things in perspective: at the time, you were lucky to have
30 minutes of call time and had to carry around a phone so big you
could probably kill a bear with it. That puts things in perspective
when you realize that many phones now are more like little
supercomputers compared to what you had in 1983. More here:

Hello,

Wanted to alleviate some of the fear that may be surrounding the GeoEye satellite used by Google.

The .41m (or .50 for Google) resolution is only for black and white photos, and since Google probably isn’t going to use those on Google maps, then they are stuck with 1.65m resolution for the color.

Even if they were coloring the .50m resolution photos you still wouldn’t be able to really identify the small stuff, as each pixel represents .50m.

I guess what it boils down to, is you don’t need to use the “private” shopping feature on your browser if you are concerned the satellite is going to catch you.

Hope this helps.

Kyle from Bakersfield.

Hi JaMaTo plus one

I have just been driving on my way home from work listening to episode 827 when I felt compelled to stop and write this email, as I think I may at last have something worthy of being read oh on the show.

Whilst you were discussing Zune bashing on the show, Natalie said that she was very suprised that we had not yet seen a Zune phone. Well actually, I was at the Microsoft event in London last week where Steve Ballmer gave away his tidbits about the cloud OS and he specifically answered a question about Microsoft direction and consumer products. Here he confirmed their intentions to make the Zune software availble for other mobile Microsoft platforms, including phones.

I would try and look for the Cnet story that I saw mentioned this and include the link, but as I am on my iPhone and didn’t think of that at the start and have no copy and paste! I can’t..

Love the show and have been listening since the 1st century

Martin the VMware guy from the uk.

**********

After putting it off multipile times I could not procrastinate or take it
any longer…

After listening to ep 827’s content about how Microsoft should have
expected to be made fun of over calling the transferring of Data between
zunes “Squirting” I could stand it no more.

The term is the correct term and Microsoft had nothing to do with it. for
example I found this article about the 1.0 spec for Bluetooth and how it
compares to IrDA specs written in June of 1999: http://awurl.com/oxjZsoIfw

The official term for the IrDA spec is called “Point and Squirt” because
you have to point to the other device creating a PAN (Personal Area
Network). “Squirting” has become the term for point to point PANs
(narrowcasting not broadcasting). Bluetooth syncs with other devices and
narrowcasts between them so the term applies.

There is even a Linux app called e-Squirt that handles both IR and
Bluetooth.

Hey JaMoTo +…ooh let me guess here….um…Rafe! (If I go that wrong…sorry!)

Sorry I didn’t get back to you about your call for the Patent Office. Sitting over in the Trademark Office (Madison East building-Represent!) with a wicked Sinus Infection I could barely make sense of BOL this week. I figured one of the Patent guys would straighten you out though.

I did look at the DMCA suggestion box and have been sifting through some ideas about what would be the best language for an exception. I’m going to start a thread in the forums and would appreciate suggestions but as of right now I figure an exception to “circumvent copy protection to perform any act recognized as an exception to copyright protection or as an act of fair use” is a good place to start. Ultimately that’s what the problem is, isn’t it? That we as users can’t use the work in a way we normally could because of the violation of the DMCA. If we have permission to circumvent based on recognized exceptions already then copyright holders still have the extra cause of action in the case of pirates and other infringers while law abiding citizens can use the works for entirely legal purposes. Short of “get rid of the DMCA” all together, it seems the fairest compromise. Perhaps if we work on it in the forums and then have the Buzz Brigade send the suggestion en masse to the Office it would help?

Also-a quick shout out to my other DC area buzzers. Let’s do a Happy Hour, yes? I’ll make a forum thread for that too.

Wally: I had a thought about why Podcaster was not allowed on the app store. I think the reason Podcaster was denied is not for the reason we think it is. When Apple said it was because “it duplicates iTunes Functionality”, I think they meant in a literal sense. If you think about this, the majority of podcasts are delivered as MP3’s. What format have the majority of online music stores been offering their music.. MP3.. All these online music stores would need to do to bypass the mobile iTunes store is give you a free RSS feed and a Web interface (either within Podcaster or their own modified variant). That’s exactly how Podcaster would duplicate mobile iTunes functionality.

Hey guys, I head you talking about Podcaster on the last episode and realized this was an application that I had to have in my collection. I knew it was asking for donation and figured I'd give it a whirl, see how well it worked, and maybe throw them $5 or $10. I went through the process of getting in the “Ad Hoc” network of the application and after receiving confirmation I was told I had to “donate” $10 before I could even try the application. I refuse to support developers who force donations down your throat to access their apps. I have donated multiple times to developers who just ask for it, as well as tried to donate to the iPhone Dev Team. In my humblest of opinions, forcing a “donation” out of your users is just as bad if not as worse as Apples literally shady confirmation process. Anyway, keep up the show, and I love the more regular occurrence of guest hosts.

Hi JaMoTo (and appropriate suffix for whomever your additional co-host is),

In regards to Google’s plans to sail away from international law, I can understand how the idea that Google being above the law would be quite scary. They already have unprecedented control over our private data and although they currently do not have a remit to utilize it, this could change in the future.

However, for me there is one plus side to their potential untouchability. Being based in international waters would mean that the U.S. government would not be able to demand that Google hand over my (and your) private information under any counter-terrorist (or other) guise.

Is it wrong to trust Google more than the U.S. government? At least Google doesn’t care what I “shop privately” for.

Transatlantic love for the show,

Andrew the Medical Student from London

Hey Buzz people that are in studio today,

I’m writing in reference to episode 809 when you were talking about AT&T U-verse. U-Verse uses what is referred to as FTTN or “Fiber to the Node” in which, fiber is run to a node, and then from the node, users are connected by traditional copper cabling, thus limiting the potential throughput. Specifically, U-Verse isn’t really true fiber, its VDSL which stands for Very High Bitrate DSL.

This is completely different from Fios which offers FTTP, or “Fiber to the Premises”, which is a direct fiber line to your home. This is typically much faster and more reliable of a connection, and its what we think about when we think about fiber connections. The difference is, of course, that Fios or Fiber to the Premises, in general is extremely expensive in the “last mile”, and fiber to the node is relatively cheap in comparison, because the last mile is solved by traditional cabling that probably already exists or is much cheaper to roll out overall.

Also, the last statement Verizon made is that they do not plan on throttling or limiting Fios, so we’ll see how that works out, I hope they don’t. They really have no reason to, at least for a while. Their last mile problem is basically solved.

Hope that helps clear that up,

Love the show,

Max

Hey almost BOL crew (minus the ranty one) I just came accross this story:

Basically it says that Rogers is going to offer the 6GB(still not unlimited grr) plan for $30 instead of $100 from launch day until August 31. As of right now (12:30 ADT) there has been no update on the Rogers Web site or the infamous ruinediphone.com other that on the latter there is a link mentioning a video address later today. If this plan also includes the minutes included with the previously announced then this might be a pretty good deal. Still lame that it’s limited but a lot better….

Its going to be a war game between logging each other off. Yay Fun!

Hey BOLers.

This is Wayne the pixel fudger here in Quebec. I just thought I would share this with you. With this merger, there is going to be some serious realism infused into next-gen games. I worked at Hybride for 8 years on such projects as Sin City, 300, (and you favorite Tom & Molly….& Veronica) Snakes On A Plane. They do some very nice work there and with the emerging 3-D trend (insert groan here), Hybride is the logical choice for this kind of merger.

I know the owner of Hybride very well and I think with the extra cash from this deal, he’ll be able to afford Rogers’ iPhone price plan.

Heart the Show,

Long time listener (via podcast), first time “caller.” I started my computer this morning to find that the Internet connection was unresponsive. As a loyal follower of the show, my first response was to blame Comcast, curse a little, and start to reset my cable connection. Eventually I traced the problem back to the Zonealarm firewall I have installed. It turns out that one of Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday updates crippled third party firewalls.

http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/news/2221138/microsoft-fix-kills-web
http://www.channelregister.co.uk/2008/07/09/ms_dns_patch_zonealarm_woes/

It appears that MS was making a legit DNS protocol update, but that they failed to tell software vendors building to their old system that it was going down. I smell antitrust if this lasts longer than a day and the Europeans catch the scent… oh well, off to uninstall Zonealarm and enable Windows Firewall (hey, it’s bundled after all).

Love the show, keep up the great work. All the best,

Hello there. I have been listening for about a month now and noticed that just about every (or perhaps every) listener message played ends with a “love the show” — many of which are fairly awkward/misplaced. For example, “I can’t believe you guys feel this way, what are you morons? My 6-year-old son has more common sense than you! Love the show.” I am thinking that your listeners think their message will not be played unless they say “love the show”. If that is the case, there are probably some really good messages that are not being aired. To solve this, I have created a “love the show”
MP3 for you that you can append to all messages that you wouldn’t normally play on air because of the sans “love the show”. Enjoy.

p.s. Love the show

Surfing the Internet on my Nokia N800 during a tornado--yes, seriously…

On Thursday morning there was some local, intense cyclonic activity that passed by my front door. I heard the siren went to my apartment’s “weather protection fortress” (aka my half-bathroom) with a comforter, pillow, and my Nokia N800 which I tuned to the local FM station to get the emergency notice. While the wind and hail was passing my front door, I was just listening to the radio and surfing the Web over Wi-Fi. I checked the Woot.com featured items and the BOL forum.

After the weather passed, I went back to bed and realized that I was freakin’ surfin’ the Interwebz while I was waiting out a tornado…WOW!

Have a good weekend,

Bandwidth “crisis”

BOLers,

Companies sell a service to customers then complain that there is a bandwidth usage problem. Nearly every network access method is sold based on oversubscription. Companies do this to maximize profits. When they are forced to spend more on infrastructure, it cuts into profits. They don’t raise costs (they cut them and still try to entice new customers on to their networks), they don’t light the No Vacancy sign, they don’t re-engineer--they call in the lawyers and lobbyists to get protection for their bad business model.

I think it is important that this particular tech issue be stripped down to it’s essence of “maximizing shareholder return” (read as: “corporate greed”) instead of a streaming, peer-to-peer, [insert technology or Web site here] story. Their failure to run the business properly and attempts to make others pay for it is the big story that is underreported in the tech sector.

Can we get a good Molly Rant on the subsidization of the network build out and the failure to deliver what was promised soon?

Digital switch-over

Hi BUZZ, you know how TV stations will scroll that white text along the top of your TV usually about impending bad weather without stopping the show you are currently watching? Well I was watching TV last night and the scroll-y text starts going by and explaining the digital switch over in 2009 and where to call to get addition information. Pretty smart, that channel is one of CT’s over the air analog stations. They ran the message once during Jeopardy & once during Wheel of Fortune. Targeted demographic? Absolutely.

Ten thousand cents

I happened across this site today and its really interesting. http://www.tenthousandcents.com/index.html It looks like these artists used Amazon’s mechanical turk program and had hundreds of people draw 10,000 frames of a $100 bill. When you load the page you see the entire image being simultaneously drawn. They have something in there about how the money they are earning from selling it is going to go toward the OLPC program, however, Google has apparently frozen their account. Not a whole lot of information, but the animation itself is worth checking out.

Dear Doug,

I understand you’re wanting some information about how to stop the prompts from asking if you’d like to install Safari for Windows. My name is Noël and I will be happy to assist you in this matter.

First off, I’d just like to say that Safari, in my opinion, is by far the best Web browser available today. It has everything you could want or need built in. I’d highly recommend you try it out to see for yourself.

To discontinue getting the message, you will need to either install the browser, or disable the Software updater from the scheduled tasks. The following article I found by googling this issue may help:

Disable Apple software update screen (Windows) http://www.technipages.com/disable-apple-software-update-screen-windows.html

I have issued 2 song credits to your “dep112362@aol.com” iTunes Store account for this frustrating matter. You can use these to buy the individual songs of your choice from the iTunes Store.

When you next sign in with this account, the song credits will appear by your account name (in the upper-right section of the iTunes Store). The next individual song you buy from the iTunes Store will use one of your song credits instead of your primary form of payment (until all credits have been used or have expired). Please note that song credits cannot be used for purchasing songs that are listed as “Album Only.”

If you don’t see your credits, refresh your account information by signing out and back in to the iTunes Store. You can find both “Sign Out” and “Sign In” within the pull-down “Store” menu. If you don’t see this menu, you should need only download the latest version of iTunes from our Web site for free:

http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Let me know if you need any further assistance with anything and I will be happy to help you. Thank you for being a valued customer. We want your experience to be as enjoyable as possible. Have a wonderful day!

Sincerely,

Noël

Response to staples chair cost

Hi Buzz Crew,
This is Ken the Staples guy.
I am writing in response to Alex the law student and his comments on a recent visit to Staples of his mentioned in episode 698. I have wanted to call or write in many times, but I feel I need to defend my paycheck and explain the policy on this one.
The policy in general is we charge a $5 assembly fee if the customer would like a chair put together.
We waive the fee if we do not have any more of the same chair in stock, and the customer would still like the display model. So if that is all we have, then you do not pay extra for it. And we often give a discount.
However, if a customer is looking for a deal by asking for the display model then we do not waive the fee, because they are trying to get something for nothing. Of course exceptions can be made then as well. But someone spent valuable time assembling the chair for a reason other than that customer.
Although he would have been surprised by the price difference in trying to get a deal in asking for the display model, I think if you ask for the display model (for a reason other than it being the last one) then you should not complain about the other people who would have tried it out.

Thanks for being my daily tech roundup--Podcast Of Indeterminate Length!

Ken, the Staples guy from near Pittsburgh Pa.

Wii controller for the PC

Hi Buzz Crew,

Just responding to Tom’s comment about the Wii controller mouse for PC (I’m sure ton of other folks will be sending this to you as well), there’s a company called Gyration (www.gyration.com) that makes mice that have a gyroscopes to detect motions like the Wii controller, and they function like a regular mice when put on a flat surface.

Looking up on Wikipedia, Gyration actually made a concept controller for Nintendo back in 2001 (http://www.answers.com/wii+controller?cat=technology&gwp=13).

I actually wrote about it way back for a small tech site back in the day, it is now defunct, although the main page still works (http://www.edgereview.com).

I really like the mouse I had back then, but it wasn’t perfect. Left clicking isn’t accurate at times while using it in motion detect mode because the process of clicking the mouse button moves the mouse, so you might not click on the right link or missed the prompt boxes at times. It definitely has a learning curve to it.

iTunes tax

Heya Buzz peoples,

In episode 698 (yesterday) you talked about California charging a tax that would apply to music downloads, specifically iTunes.

Well I live in Arizona and I pay a tax on iTunes download. I pay 1.08 for a song and about 2.10 - 2.11 for a TV episode.

So I don’t know what ya’ll are complaining about. I have been paying taxes on iTunes downloads since day one.

Anyway just wanted to let you all know. Also I think I only pay sales taxes on Internet sales if that company I am buying from has stores-etc in my state. Apple has stores in Ariz., therefore I pay tax on Apple products. That’s my understanding anyway.

Keep up the buzzing.

Is there a term for BOL killing a site?

Hi JaMoTo,

If you haven’t already coined a name for it yet, you need to find a BOL equivalent to Slashdotting or the Digg Effect. Buzzed, maybe? In episode 698 you mentioned http://www.applejeans.com, and when I visited that the afternoon of the show, all it showed was a Microsoft ODBC Drivers error. I hope you’re happy — you’ve killed the dream of Apple Jeans!

Wimax in Iran--from 3 years ago!

Hey Jason - Tom - Molly:

As you have been talking about WiMax in U.S. and the stories about that all I was thinking about was, what the hell are they talking about? We have WiMax in Iran-Tehran about 3 years now.
A company called http://www22.laser.ir/ in Iran has been providing WiMax service, but because the service price is so high, not many people are using the service.
The price for the WiMax modem is $400, and the cheapest plan is 128Kbps bandwidth with $99 per month.
Of course other companies are trying to reach lower prices and provide better service, Anyway, we have WiMax in Iran. So we are not that much of third-world country, are we? ( Just kidding )

Love the show.

The Ford Maverick was a fine car, Tom

Tom, in a world with Yugos, Gremlins, Pacers, Cimarrons, Vegas, Festivas, and other poorly made cars, you trash the Maverick. My family owned a 6-cylinder two-door Maverick in Grabber Blue, yes I know the color name was awful, but the car was solid. It was not going win a drag race or out-handle a Porsche, but our Maverick have over 120,000 miles on the original engine and transmission when we sold it. The ride was nice, and it had no major repairs done to it. For their time, the Maverick was a good car. The only issue was the marketing guy who came with the name Grabber Blue.

So once again, proof there is a defender for everything.

Well, I wonder if anyone would truly defend the epic Sci-fi blunder Battlefield Earth. Maybe you guys can put that one to the test.

Keep up the great work. Just quit picking on the Maverick.

MacBook Air and the buried lead

Seems to me the real story isn’t that the TSA staff were stumped by a MacBook Air, it’s that it took nearly two months for an Air to find it’s way through this particular security checkpoint. Student accused of cheating on Facebook faces expulsion

Hi JaMoTo

I have been listening for a couple of years now. Listening to you guys when I drive, commute, and run. For some reason I run faster when Molly gets her rant on.

I thought you might be interested in this. Frankly I am ready for a rant on this myself. Its disappointing and embarrassing. Now I have to start thinking that this is not the kind of university I want to send my kids if they have this backward attitude.

The opening paragraph said it all…….

“What is the difference between a group of students brainstorming chemistry problems around a table in a library or a coffee shop, and the same group brainstorming online via Facebook? The answer so far is if you do it on Facebook, you risk being accused of academic misconduct and being expelled from school, at least if you go to Ryerson University in Toronto.”

70/30 iTunes split from Ep. 676

Hi buzz crew,
Just a bit of pushback about your “Isn’t that HIGH?!” remark when commenting about the iTunes 70/30 revenue split with record labels…..

Typically, the model for old fashioned physical music distribution (starting at the retail level) for labels looks like this:

1. MSRP (That’s your retails store selling…)--$13 (a GREAT price for a new release)
2. Price the store paid the distributor--60-65 percent of MSRP (roughly $7.80-$8.45 per copy)
3. Price the distributor paid the label--roughly $2.00-$2.50 below the the price sold to retail stores (depending on the distributor/label relationship)
4. Price the label “pays” their artists (by the way…the label only has about $5.30-$7.45 at best to divvy up at this point)--30-50 percent or roughly $1.59-$3.73

Here is the end result of the physical distribution chain of power…

Retail Outlet: Roughly $5.00
Distributor: Roughly $2.25
Label: Roughly $3.83
Artist: Roughly $2.55

Obviously, the biggest winner there is the Retail Outlet! That’s outrageous right?

Here’s how it works with digital distribution:

1. MSRP (iTunes album price)--$10
2. NO DISTRIBUTOR (The label usually acts as it’s own distributor)
3. Price the Label pays to iTunes--30 percent
4. Price the label “pays” their artists--same as physical typically, but not always (deals vary for digital distribution.)

Now how does that math break down you ask? I’m glad you asked!

iTunes: $3.00
Distributor: N/A
Label: $4.20
Artist: $2.80 (Often higher, depending on the deal with the label)

My point is…iTunes is far more fair than the old fashioned physical distribution chain, and I think that when Steve Jobs said that the iPhone application price is the same as the label price, he must have assumed everybody already knew how all this worked. So the real question is…

WHY WOULD ANYONE KNOW THAT STUFF, STEVE?

Now, just as a demonstration as to how good distribution to iTunes can be for indie label artists (like myself), here’s how my deal is broken down…

1. My album is $7.99 on iTunes (a price set by…you guessed it…ME, the ARTIST) 2. iTunes pays my (indie) label 4.79 per album.
3. My label keeps only 9 percent, so in the end, I receive $4.33 per album sold at $7.99. If I sold my album at $9.99, I would receive $6.37.

Never in history has the indie artist been able to put out a product to the masses that is so readily available, and receive so much return from it.

Now let me get this straight….iTunes is actually good for the indie artist? Wow, who woulda thunk it?

NOW GO BUY MY ALBUM ON ITUNES. :-)

Love the show!

Hello Buzzards,

I have a podcast at podwatch.org where I review other podcasts, and I was unable to find anything wrong with Buzz Out Loud, forcing me to give it my first 10/10 ever. I don’t like giving 10/10s, so if you could kindly give me a list of things wrong with Buzz, I’ll be happy to reduce the score ;)

cheers,

(Seriously, though, thank you for a great show, )

Buzz Out Loud 669: Wikileaks got a gun

by Molly Wood

Wikileaks gets some serious legal firepower to help in its domain-name-takedown case. Comcast is in trouble for hiring seat fillers, not at the Oscars, but at an FCC hearing. Adding insult to injury: the seat fillers totally fell asleep! Oh, and Microsoft has to pay more money to the EU--as usual.

E-MAIL

Sorry…

Hi again, Dion the Buzz stalker. I just realized after sending my last e-mail complimenting to Jason about the show notes / iPod thing, I can sync my podcasts to the Touch before work. Idiot. ROFLOI, which looks ridiculous BTW. This whole freakin' issue of not being able to listen to Buzz at work has stressed me out more than my actual job and it was a total nonissue.

Yahoo Live

OMG you guys…SHUT UP! This is so cool! I just got the link to your Yahoo Live feed from the forums and I am looking at you guys right now! Of course, the show is delayed today so I will need to check back in a few hours but--oh man--this is kind of exciting! And it also reminds me of a question that I have wanted to ask you which is--what is the “E! Behind the Scenes” BOL story? Meaning, what does your day look like at CNET and how does the BOL podcast fit in? You guys usually record at 10 a.m. PST, right? So, are you in the office by 8, you all check the Web for the latest tech stories, then do you meet up and discuss them for a half hour or so before the show--while also viewing e-mails and listing to vm’s together as well to determine what would be most interesting and relevant to listeners? Do you have a bulleted list of things that you want to mention? Do you decide--oh Tom can lead with this, Molly can talk about that etc? Is it this formal and organized or is it more casual than that? How does it all work?

Thanks!

Map of social popularity around the world

Hi Buzz Out Loud crew,
I found this interesting image comparing the distribution of popularity of social networks around the world:

Leveraging the intelligence of the community

I thought Zack’s e-mail about gathering information from the community for the digital TV migration was great. It was an inspiration to me to leverage the intelligence of Buzz Town for such a project. As it turns out, I am also working on a new project. My project is seeking total world domination and have had a difficult time choosing among the very many options available. For instance, zombies or no zombies?

I have also setup an e-mail address too collect people’s ideas on what has and has not worked for them. Could you ask the community to send their ideas to EvilGeniusPlans@gmail.com.

Thanks for your help. It would probably be better if you did not share my name.

JaMoTo tweets!

Hey Buzz Crew,

I’ve been thinking about doing something like this for a while, but I’d like to thank Buzz listener 2klbofun for a small kick in the pants. They commented (http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-11455_7-9875295-10.html#comments) that JaMoTo needed a Twitter feed, so I have set it up.
http://twitter.com/JaMoTo

JaMoTo will send you an update once a day and let you know where she is. Should be considered a beta service for now. I’ll tweak it as needed.

Anyone interested in higher bandwidth updates can subscribe to receive daily project e-mail updates:

Love the JaMoTo wikia entry!

And will indignities never end!? Jamoto.com is a freakin’ link farm!

cheers,

Michael
