So, Apple bought Lala, and Ars Technica thinks it has a source who knows what Apple's going to do with it-- it's going to make a Web site that sells music and stores it in the cloud. Kind of like what Lala already is, but it's going to be all iTunes-ified. And that has Rafe worrying about cloud failure again. We also kvetch about Facebook, a Mozilla employee complains about Google, and the "New Moon" videotaper is set free.

Hey Buzz Crew, this is Jeremy the theater manager. I’m writing in to tell you about my chain’s monthly newsletter. One of the constant topics in the letter is recording–how to spot it, what to do about it, so on. Almost every month it’s followed with a picture of a manager and a bow-tie clad teenager holding a five hundred dollar check. I’m not sure how I could sleep at night sending someone to prison and ruining their life for five bills over some crappy camera screener. I really don’t think the punishment fits the crime. Personally I tell all my employees that if they see someone taping, they should sit next to them and ask for the camera. That way, nobody goes to jail, there’s one less unwatchable screener on the torrent sites, and, hey, free camera. Everybody wins!
Love the show.
P.S. The MPAA site given in the newsletter is fightfilmtheft.org .

Hi Buzz crew,
Your discussion of real-time writing on Google Wave got me thinking about a great new revenue possibility for established authors.
Imagine if someone like Stephen King were to announce he’s writing his next novel on Google Wave. How many fans and writers would pay $30 for a 1-year membership to access that wave anytime? They could access the wave and watch King write his novel in real time. It’s not only great for King’s fans, but could also be a graduate-level course in writing for serious students.

Hey Buzz Crew,
It was funny how you guys talked about hackers blacking out Brazil in previous years and just yesterday (Tuesday) we have suffered another one. A report says that it affected 18 states (4 totally, 14 partially) and also Paraguay (about 90%). The blackout is believed to have been caused by weather conditions and it has shut down 3 power transmission lines, some hydroelectric power plants and two nuclear power plants. The power was totally restored by 3:15 AM (Brazilian DST). More information can be found in the following link (in Portuguese, sorry): http://www1.folha.uol.com.br/folha/cotidiano/ult95u650831.shtml
Please stop talking about blackouts here… It appears to have and immediate effect! LOL

Hey buzz crew love the show! Have heard you guy mention that “unlimited
data” on wireless isn’t really unlimited. I did some checking as I am a
heavy data user and can’t find anyplace on Verizon, ATT or Sprints
website that says theres actually a 5gb limit (and yes I read as much of
the fine print as I could find). I did see that there was a 5gb limit on
there data card plans and tethering but it says that right up front. So
my question is what are you talking about? Oh and when I said I was a
heavy data user I meant that I am a truck driver who uses my Sprint data
card which I luckily got when they had the unlimited plan which I get to
keep. My average usage is… 25gb a month with an all time high of 52gb.
I also have almost no trouble getting 3G service in all the places I go.
Again Love The Show!

This will be my first “well actually” but as a mechanical engineer I
thought it worth pointing out that converting between units on a
complicated platform like the space shuttle is probably a bit more
complex than entering a few searches in google. Unfortunately, you
can’t just replace every 1/4″-20 x 1″ socket head cap screw with a
M6.35-1.27 x 25.4 screw. For one, the hardware doesn’t exist, and two,
the nomenclatures are different. You would actually have to reengineer
quite a bit to make a functioning system using only metric units.
It may be the bane of every freshman engineering student in the US,
but mixed units are the current reality.

Just wanted to pass along a thank you. I got an A in the class and sumbitted it to a copyright writing competition. I won the competition at the local level and will move on to the national competition. I got $600 from ASCAP for winning at the local level, so it turns out the ASCAP is actually good for something.

Hey All,
So Tom, from episode 1003, you had a 1977 Maverick? Tell us about it.
I had a 1969 and a 1977 Maverick at the same time.
Bought the ‘77 new, my 1st new car ever. Loved the ‘69 and cussed the
‘77 most of the time.
The 1977 had a 302 engine and by the time all the pollution crap was
hung on it I think it had less
power than the 1969 did with it’s straight 6 (170 c.i.d. I think). ‘69
was fast and had great fuel mileage.

Dear BOL,
In show #977 Brain Cooley mentioned the work with Dove prisms that invert and reverse the world. His statement included a bit of hyperbole.
I’m a behavioral optometrist and we use prisms in our work.
The brain researcher Karl Pribram did a good bit of this work and I had the chance to chat with him about this work.
Prism after effects of simple prisms that shift images side to side or up and down last about the same amount of time the prisms are actually worn.
Put on the prisms, reach for an object and miss to the side. In a few minutes we recalibrate the movement.
After 5 minutes of wearing the prisms, when you take them off your hand moves in the opposite direction.
A fallacy that is often promulgated about the Dove (inverting and reversing) prisms is that after a period of time the world looked normal to the wearer.
This is not true.
What happened is that the conscious perception never flipped but the motor patterns were rewired so that all movements were made accurately.
Normalization, when the prisms come off, then does happen but takes a while.
Pribram did say however that they never should have done this work with humans.
The new software remains in the brain and later in life, during emergency types of situations, such as may happen when driving, the person might use the wrong motor software.
Perhaps an overzealous researcher or grad student wore the Dove prisms too long and then made an error in judgment in just such a situation.
To my knowledge there was no suicide as Cooley mentioned.

Did you get that Android chaser jingle done?
According to The Inquirer (which I hope is reliable as I’ve never heard of it) a Chinese company called SkyTone has released the first netbook powered by Android. It has a 7 inch swivelling touchscreen with gamepad controls on the sides, wifi, 3G(!), SD card reader, a webcam and 2 USB ports as well as 128mb of RAM and a 533MHZ ARM processor. And what’s especially good in these troubled times (drink) is it’s price: $100. To me that speaks volumes for the quality of the components but its low enough to be in the impulse-buy realm so I’d certainly fork out for one!

Hi Buzzers or buzzcrew or the slightly forgotten Jatona
Tomorrow it is the time for a new OS to hit the “shelves” - Ubuntu 9.04. Probably you got more than me reminding you of this - but since there is certainly strength in numbers, I will not hesitate to point you towards this, rather important, news.
A story from my world. I am CEO of a global company with offices in Denmark, Vietnam and Egypt. I have quite a number of staff doing production of elearning for us - and I am now moving them all to Ubuntu. No more licences, old copies and so on. Simply Open Source through and through (with the only possible exception being video-editing, since that is truly the world of proprietary formats). In my view we are ready now. With the combination of using Google Apps for Business for our email, systems like Dropbox and Google Docs for sharing and Ubuntu as OS we can actually run global corporations on open platforms and free services. Yes - we have to be aware of the dangers. Google could go chapter 11(!?!) - Google could turn evil(?) - Dropbox could close (ok that is possible). But as long as you are prepared for this - and take precautions for the risks, I do not really see why there is a need for corporate infrastructures when talking sub-100 people companies.
So - Go Ubuntu! I have been running 9.04 since beta - and has produces several projects for clients on the platform. It crashes a lot less than my Vista, which it dual-boots with. My main reasons for still having Windows is videoediting - and iTunes, so I can sync my iPhone and listen to Buzz Out Loud on my daily 1 hour commute.
Love the show

Luv the show and keep up the work. I'm a Systems Engineer and I work at Lockheed Martin. I worked on the JSF program many years ago when the program was in its infancy.
As you all may know... there are different tiers of security classification with respective networks. My speculation is that data siphoned off were DRs (Design Reviews) Presentations, SRR (System Requirement Reviews) and other set of data used to present & discuss planning and design with the stakeholders (i.e. Pentagon). These presentations talk about design, but at a high level, which in my opinion, any smart person can figure out just by using the internet. For example, you can find a high level design of the aircraft on wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F35#Design )
I'm guessing that NIPRNet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NIPRNet) was compromised over the durations of the attacks, while the more sensitive network, SIPRNet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIPRNET ) remained secure.
It's not impossible, but I can't even imagine detailed drawings and assembly instructions to reside on any Pentagon server or pc. That design detailed is so low level, that it would probably annoy anyone who doesn't directly work on the aircraft. Usually that stuff is stored on the contractors (The Lockheeds & Boeings) secured network on some obscure and super secured server.
I would like to also add the F35 will be sold to other nations, which tells me that there are design specs that are traded with minimal sensitivity, i.e. if the data is compromised, there would be little or no repercussions. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F35#International_participation )
In summary, I'm not too concerned with data that was compromised at the Pentagon, because a lot of design is already available on the internet

Hey Buzz Crew,
Last week ya’ll had a short piece about Twitter Jurors and their potential effect on our legal system. Two issues that have come up include a system that doesn’t fully understand how people utilize the new technology and people that might be using the technology during inappropriate times (such as during trial deliberations.)
Thought you would enjoy seeing this story about our very own Arkansas Twitter Juror, Johnathan Powell. Lawyers in his case were seeking a mistrial over the $12.5 million judgment based on a handful of tweets made by Powell. The lawyers contended he tweeted during the trial; Powell said it was after. Turns out the time stamps on his tweets were made them look like Powell sent them two hours earlier than he actually did. The judge consequently ruled there were no grounds for a mistrial.
http://www.nwaonline.net/articles/2009/04/03/news/040409fzjurortweet.txt
I have no doubt that at some point inappropriate tweeting could lead to major legal snafus in the future. Since this was clearly not the case, Johnathan merely helped to introduce a few of our local legal experts to the world of modern, Internet-based communication.
Love the show!

Hey Buzz Crew,
You guys talked about OnLive, the streaming game company, sometime in the last couple weeks. Randy, Scott, and Patrick (the same Patrick Beja whose emails you guys have been reading on the show lately) also discussed it on The Instance last week, and they really got me thinking. From what I’ve seen, game prices on the service haven’t been announced, but I would hope they would be cheaper than store bought games as it sounds like you will have to pay for the subscription. I wonder if this model could be applied to other processor/graphics intensive programs such as Photoshop. It seems that it would almost be more suited to this application as latency would not be such an issue.
What do you think? Would a streaming, hosted subscription model work for these high-end programs?

Interesting one there. Mobilin is a linux distro created and until now
managed by Intel that is aimed at the Atom based MIDs and Netbooks.
It’s looked pretty interesting, taking lightweight and fast Xfce desktop
environment and a standardised API to make it easier for programmers,
whilst including GTK and QT as well.
It also manages something few other OSs have achieved, a true boot up in
just 5 seconds, from scratch not Suspend To Ram, not hibernation.
With that announcement Intel has passed over management of the
application to the Linux Foundation, whilst retaining a person on the
steering committee. What hasn’t changed is the core developers. Intel
is still employing them full time to work on it, so it appears to be an
almost political rather than practical change here to try and pull other
parties in and get them invested in the development.

I have voted twice from my phone and my sister, my mother, and myself send 8000, 5000, & 4000 texts a month respectivly. I’m a little hurt i didn’t get a message. :’( Love the show.

It looks like “Transit Mode” may be closer than we think. I don’t think that anyone has mentioned it yet (since you guys discussed it a week before the G1 was publicly available), so I give to you: Locale .
Locale is an app for Android which — well, the site is much more informative than I could be about it.
Suffice it to say that there are GPS-enabled, location-aware phone profile changes going on here. I’m thinking v2.0 could add hooks into changing voicemail settings; id est:
If curVelocity > 25mph Then
numRings = 1
vmGreeting = greet2
Else If curVelocity > 50mph Then
numRings = 0
vmGreeting = greet3
End If
Yeah, it’d *probably* wind up being slightly more complicated than the preceding block of code, but it’s a start. Heck, they can even use that as a springboard, no charge!

P.S. After sending the following email, I took another look at the screenshots on the Android page. It looks like you can already set up specific call forwarding features based on current location! (see last pic) Now all we need is that voicemail greeting change thingy, and T.M. is here. For realz!
I listen to the buzz out loud podcast a lot and I really enjoy the banter. Sometimes I learn more about the tech world from listening to you guys than I do from reading most of the articles on technology and I recommend the podcast to my friends.
Now, here’s something I’d like to hear about. Today, on the front page of c|net, I was treated to a large, annoying, autorunning video ad of the iPhone. This is the second time it’s appeared this month that I know of. There is a close button at the top of the ad, but the button does not work and the ad plays ad whether I want it to or not. This has to be my number one pet peave on the internet these days since these ads only serve to clog up my tubes locally with content I don’t want to see. Ad blocking does not appear to work, so I notified CBS through the “ad feedback” link that for this weekend I will be blacklisting c|net on this network.
What do you guys think? Am I over reacting in a world where my ISP is planning to start limiting my monthly bandwidth and where annoying ads such as these are using up my bandwidth sans my permission? Or am I justified in wishing to control what goes across my network and what uses up my bandwidth and what doesn’t? I do not have anything against ads because I know everyone needs to get paid for the work they do, but come on, do they think we’ll keep coming back to a site that continually uses up more bandwidth than it’s worth? Afterall, CnetTV stops streaming after 3 videos for precisely the reason of not wanting to use up bandwidth, why limit the bandwidth there but not in this case?
Just my pet peave and rant of the weekend.
Matt in Palm Bay
With as nice as the Holiday Help Desk is to watch on cnettv.com, why
isn’t cnet cranking out content on a DTV subcarrier for any CBS owned
and operated station? Here in Las Vegas our local CBS affiliate (not an
O&O) carries programming from LATV on its .2 signal. My local NBC
affiliate carries not only Universal Sports but also NBC WeatherPlus.
For all the great stuff CNET does in audio as well as video online,
couldn’t it reach even more people via DTV?
An OTA version of cnet couldn’t be too difficult via DTV and would
likely have less download limit worries than pulling podcasts on an
iPhone. The morning wake-up show already exists with the404. B-O-L
could be the mid-morning show. After that other things that are on
watchbol.com now could be aired.
I am merely curious. I enjoy both the404 and B-O-L as morning shows.
Both are better than some of the things local radio provides.

Hello Molly, Tom, Jason +1,
I am a long time listener from India.
Please make mention about the role of social media (Twitter, Flickr) in the aftermath of the Mumbai attacks if you can.

I must confess that I have some concerns about it in this context, the biggest being the safety of the hostages, e.g. there were requests from the authorities to stop the twitter feed #mumbai, since the holed-up attackers might be following them, thus giving away details of the operations of the security forces.
However 36 hours on, #mumbai still lives.
In any case, it sign of the times and definitely of relevance beyond India.
Love the show.

I’m surprised you guys didn’t talk about this today. Gosh, you guys are getting more and more influential. Someone should make a list of all the things you guys changed in order to make these troubled times less… troubled. In fact, I bet Molly could run for president and win at this point. Or better yet, you could make a podcast oriented government. Every week a new episode would come out with new laws for people. And it would be fair, because you would let other people come on to the show and submit their own laws.
