Since net neutrality and throttling are popping back into the news recently I figured I’d share a recent experience I’ve had: My cable provider in Florida (Brighthouse) offers two different options for cable internet: Earthlink and Time Warner Road Runner. I was previously on Earthlink but switched to Time Warner due to a huge speed jump from Earthlink, and my download tests have jumped from about 8 mbps to roughly 20 mbps. Actual usage experience seems about the same as Earthlink, except for YouTube performance! Most movies pause every few seconds, and HQ/HD mode is almost impossible to use. Hulu and Netflix streaming work fine (most of the time). At first I thought maybe there was something up with the YouTube servers, but days had gone by and there was no improvement. I searched for the words “youtube time warner slow” and found countless discussions about this problem. After analyzing trace routes and comparing performance between users and different providers, the general consensus on the message boards is that Time Warner is throttling YouTube and has been for some time now. Then I stumbled across the most startling advice: Instead of going to http://www.youtube.com, one user suggested going to the *Australian* YouTube at http://au.youtube.com to avoid the Time Warner throttle. After I made that simple change, YouTube was blazing fast. Every video I loaded up started immediately and completed without any pausing, and HD mode worked fine as well! Put a tin foil hat on me- I don’t care: this experience made me a believer. We need net neutrality, NOW. Have you guys heard any other stories from Time Warner users?

Hey buzz crew,

I was listening to your podcast on my ipod touch and heard you mention that Apple has made Safari the only browser on the iphone and blocked off any others. That seems to be wrong as I went to the app store and searched “browser” and saw multiple web browsers to download (some free and some up to $3.99). So there you go, you don’t have to use safari.
This may be 100% wrong because maybe the browsers on the app store use the safari engine to generate web pages, in that case I admit my mistake… but not really.

Why don’t the movie studios just use public key cryptography methods to encrypt the movies? Each theater could have it’s own public and private key pair, and the studio could encrypt the movie using the theater’s public key and only the theater’s private key would be able to decrypt it. That way if they have the movie they can play it. No need to wait for the key from the studio. Plus, this is much more secure than sending the key via email…

the bars are the signal strength from the mast. the circle is cell data, and E is Edge, 3G is 3G.

Over here in the UK on O2 we have pretty good 3G coverage and every time iv used my iPhone
to load a page – it loads, what ever i’m on (cell,edge,3g), yes on cell it takes a bit longer – but it loads,
sounds like AT&T should give up and go do something else

I just wanted to point out that the new international Kindle 2 would be launched in over 100 countries. So pretty much everywhere except Canada. Honestly, are we really that hard to deal with? Or is it just that Amazon Canada seems to be permanently caged into it’s infant stage? Either way, if you live in Burundi in Africa, you can have a kindle. If you live in Cambodia, have a Kindle. Canada? No Kindle for you. If Sony wasn’t the evil empire, I would have a Sony Reader by now.

I was very interested in your discussion about libraries on Friday’s podcast. As a current library employee and student of Library Science, I feel that public libraries need to change their image in order to remain open or get increased funding. There are some great examples of this around the world such as in Singapore wherein the entire physical library structure and image were given a completely modern overhaul. They have gone from a simple book repository to a learning center in order to attract more patronage. Similarly in Fresno County, California the public library has merged with the public schools in order to pool resources and coordinate learning initiatives. Mind you I could talk about this topic forever, but I thought it important to share these examples with you!

First of all, if you can afford it, it looks like a beautiful little vacation spot, but I have one big concern. Hey Buzzcrew,

Just listening to episode 1064 and had to comment on a quick way to handle turning off your check engine light, without having to even spend $20 on the device Rafe mentioned. Provided you've fixed the problem that caused the light to turn on, you can shut it off (in most cars I've worked on, can't speak for every model out there...) by simply unhooking the negative terminal of the car battery, letting it sit for about 20 minutes, then rehooking up the battery and starting the car. This basically resets the engine computer, and since the car will detect nothing wrong, as you've fixed the problem, the check engine light will stay off. The only downside is, you'll lose all your radio presets. Hope this helps someone out there.

Regarding the XP issue from episode 1064, here are some additional details from Microsoft available in entirety at http://www.microsoft.com/oem/english/content/software/XPEOL.mspx. I'm looking forward to Windows 7 also.

On June 30, 2008, Microsoft will stop distributing Windows XP as a standalone product that can be bought shrink-wrapped in retail stores. We'll also stop sending it to Dell, HP, Lenovo, and all the other major PC manufacturers to sell on their PCs. This is called ―End of Sale‖.

That said, Windows XP isn't going to disappear overnight.

You may still see copies of the software--or computers preloaded with it--for months as stores and PC makers work through their inventory. Also, system builders can continue to sell PCs with Windows XP until January 2009.

Finally, Microsoft recently announced that computers with limited hardware capabilities--devices sometimes called Netbooks or ultralow-cost PC s (ULCPC)--can carry Windows XP Home until June 2010. (Read about the ULCPC program on Microsoft PressPass.)

This is Dr George, the kidney doc and I was listening to podcast 1064
and thinking “finally, the topic of urine is a subject that I can sink
my teeth into”. Urine that is dumped in the sky can shine because of
crystals in the urine, such as calcium or urate crystals.
Maybe the astronauts had some kidney stones? Ouch!
Luckily urine is usually sterile, so no worries about it showering on
you, unless the urine housed a urinary tract infection. In any case
urine sometimes smells foul, especially if, as Molly suggested, it was
old stagnant urine left standing for months.

Enough about my life, and yes, this falls under the category of “Too
much info”!

As you can see on the article below Nokia has sold a monitoring application to Iran's Telecom, for monitoring calls, sms, mms, and internet usage.

I have read in some other articles that Nokia has said we sold that application on late 2008 and the agreement says it can be used for limited number of users, mostly for security reasons like tracking and finding spy or anything like that, but the Iranian government is using it to monitor everyone's phone, and this is against Nokia's agreement and term of use and Nokia is going to sue Iran's government.
But who knows?

Hey Buzz Crew,

I was driving around town today, doing errands and listening to Buzz Out Loud. When I heard about Bozeman job services requesting applicants to provide username and passwords for social networking sites, I was totally in denial. Molly, Tom and Jason talking about Bozeman, MT? How could this be? Afterall, Bozeman is no Silicon Valley.

As a current resident of Bozeman, I am glad to hear about my town on BOL, but the story does not put Bozeman in the best possible light. Good thing that they rescinded this policy. Please make sure the Buzz town is aware of this and this can somehow clear Bozeman’s name a bit. Bozeman is a great little town (hmm, the smallest city I’ve ever lived in, but the fifth largest city in MT) with great nature resources all around it and hope you all have a chance to come and visit this area. It is beautiful out here!

When is episode 2000? Approximately Thursday, June 13th, 2013. [It's the second Thursday of June - gonna have to bump it back a bit]

So how’d I get that? First, I wrote a little script that would go through the months and count the number of weekdays for me. This gave me a nice estimate of how many BOLs there’d be. But it didn’t take into consideration the holidays. So I Googled a holiday list and came up with http://www.opm.gov/Operating_Status_Schedules/fedhol/2009.asp and added those to the spreadsheet, too. I had the spreadsheet do the math for me to remove them and then run a count for me.

I did the last bit by hand, knowing that the last episode of May 2013 would be #1991, I counted into 2000 by hand.

A few other notable or neat episode numbers:
1194 – Tuesday, March 30th, 2010 – BOL’s 10th Anniversary.
1234 – Tuesday, May 25th, 2010
1250 – Thursday, June 17th, 2010 [A third Thursday!]

Hey Buzz Crew,
I’ve got a little bit of a rant to get off my chest. In episode #923 one of you implied that dsl is slower than cable, thus streaming would be worse. This drives me nuts!! It may be true that in larger cities, cable options are much faster than dsl options, but I live in a small city in a more rual area, and the dsl speeds avalible are faster than cable speeds! Not only that, but they are quite a bit cheaper too! I have a 7.1 mb dsl connection, and the default cable connection is 6 mb. Just something to think on.

This is Siavash, I'm a Cisco trained IT Engineer in Iran and I've been sending many mails to you that some got to the show so you may remember me.
About the Helicopter Story, generally Iranian people don't approve what the government does; please don't think of me as a terrorist listenerJ.
Kidding aside I did a little of digging in Iranian ISPs and the whole Iranian IP range and the IP that had hacked into the computer, as long as I can say, the IP belongs to a ISP, they say the IP has been dedicated to VPN connection and as their Log shows the VPN has been established somewhere in Middle East, (they don't say exactly where). So as I get it, either some one from Middle East has hacked into their servers, and used their IP address to hack the computer in USA , or there has been someone ( maybe Iranian) in middle east with access to this ISP and their servers and used their network to hack the computer.
So now all I can say is that the attack has not been inside Iran, but the identity of the hacker and it's location is still a mystery, I will do more digging on this and I will get back to you with any new and fresh info.

Hi Buzzers,

You discussed in Episode 922 that the new Mac Mini has DVI instead of HDMI, and that very few HDTVs have DVI any more. That’s true, but DVI and HDMI are pretty much the same standard - it’s just that DVI only carries the video signal, and HDMI carries both video and audio together. So if you get a DVI to HDMI cable and connect it from a Mac Mini to an HDTV, it should send an HD signal just fine. You’ll just have to find some other way to handle the audio (like hooking up the audio out jack to the optical audio input on your receiver).

I agree, though - Apple should just get on the stick and add HDMI (and what’s with this “Mini DVI” port, anyway?)…
