Buzz Out Loud Podcast 1102: We're blocked in China! We made it!

by Lynn Fu

We get an email telling us our podcast RSS feed is now blocked in China after talking about the dispute over World of Warcraft between two Chinese government departments. Really? THAT is what got us blocked. We also get a kick out of good old Grandpa Murdoch's latest ramblings. And happy birthday Firefox. You're vulnerable.

Hey Buzz Crew,
I know from an earlier episode that many of you no longer use the
actual Google homepage, opting for search bars and other fancy means.
But, as someone who uses the homepage everyday, the things that Google
chooses to put on their home really makes an impact on me as a Google
user. Much to my surprise, this morning when I login, what do I see? A
shameless plug for the Verizon Droid phone. Now, I think this phone is
great and I would even purchase it myself if I was not broke. But, I
feel that this kind of promotional advertising on the Google homepage
crosses that line from normal to extremely sleazy. I tend to be ok with
Google and their enormous corporate clout because they typically are
innocuous in their products and launches. More like “Hey, here is a
really cool product, do what you want with it” instead of “Yo, yo, yo,
check out this sweet product that you need to have to change your
life”. But, this advert on the homepage seems more like the typical
marketing tricks by a very large company. What do you guys think?

So, I had been wondering why the last couple BOL’s weren’t coming down through iTunes, so I decided to check the blog and see what’s up, and I see the story about the infighting between the Chinese Ministry of Culture and the GAPP over WoW. Apparently somebody didn’t like the way you guys talked about it. I have seen other podcasts mysteriously stop downloading (happened to Radiolab after they did a piece on a Chinese zoo that does live feedings), but oddly I wouldn’t expect it to happen to Buzz, since you’ve covered China’s censorship before without getting blocked. Could just be coincidental, after all, I would really expect the Instance to get blocked because of Scott’s “Ding Pong” act, but it hasn’t.

Anyway, no reason to shut up about it, your pod is still accessible from the blog page, so China listeners aren’t totally out of luck.

Also, I posted a rough overview of WoW’s China troubles here: http://gacorley.wordpress.com/2009/11/08/chinese-government-departments-fighting-over-wow/ — doesn’t say much new, though one huge question I still have is why skeletons are such a big deal to China’s censorship regime. I was hoping someone would eventually give me a good cultural answer, but it may just be that moral authorities have strange fetishes.

Hey buzz crew in episode 1101 you were talking about whether or not
Netscape was free or not. As someone who is greatly interested in the
browser wars past and present I feel I can settle this argument.
Netscape was free for educational and personal use and they charged for
enterprise accounts. This may have changed at the end, but the primary
way that Internet Explorer won was by making it default on windows, and
they also made a deal with Apple to make internet explorer the default
browser on Mac OS (late 9 and early X). Love the show, hopes this helps!

Hey Buzz crew,

I am sure you will have this in today’s lineup..but just in case:

Comcast’s new throttling policies.

http://tech.slashdot.org/story/09/11/04/2026206/Comcasts-New-Throttling-Plan-Uses-Trigger-Conditions-Not-Silent-Blocking

“Its network throttling implements a two-tier packet queueing system at the routers, driven by two trigger conditions. Comcast’s first traffic throttling trigger is tripped by using more than 70 per cent of your maximum downstream or upstream bandwidth for more than 15 minutes. Its second traffic throttling trigger is tripped when the Cable Modem Termination System you’re hooked-up to - along with up to 15,000 other Comcast subscribers - gets congested, and your traffic is somehow identified as being responsible. Tripping either of Comcast’s high bandwidth usage rate triggers results in throttling for at least 15 minutes, or until your average bandwidth utilisation rate drops below 50 per cent for 15 minutes.”

So…by analogy, will cops start giving out speeding tickets if you travel >=70% of the posted speed limit for more than 15 minutes as well?

Wasn’t there a recent story about the FTC/FCC rules about “Truth in advertising” about ISP speeds? Now Comcast pretty much says, that whatever the ADVERTISED bandwidth, you will be punished for using more than 70% of your ACTUAL bandwidth.

My brother just alerted me to the Darpa Network Challenge, http://networkchallenge.darpa.mil/, which is to mark the 40th anniversary of the Internet.

The goal of the Challenge is to be the first to submit the locations of 10 large red weather balloons scattered throughout the continental united states. Greetings buzztown,

Tom, you were concerned about the lack of competition in the chip market.
Well actually there was more in the early days of Windows NT.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windo
NT was initially available on these platforms: Intel X86, MIPS R3000/R4000 DEC Alpha, IBM PowerPC, Itanium and AMD64.

I was in software development back then. With four Unix platforms, we had 10 platforms to develop and support. Expensive!
With the market consolidation, It is so much easier now. We support Windows X86, OS X, Solaris and HP-UX.
Any new chip maker is going to have to emulate the X86 instruction set.

AMD, in 1982 licensed the X86 architecture. That, I believe, is why they still exist today.
I can’t imagine Intel would do that again, Unless the Government ordered it.
It is nice to have a standard PC that can boot Windows, OS X and Linux as needed.

There is more competition in electrical outlets around the world.
There are 12 different connectors and about 6 different voltages.
It’s tough charging you laptop around the world.

Hey Buzz Crew

Apple selling the OS X upgrade at $29.00 is obviously a stab at Microsoft. According to Paul Thurotte on Windows weekly, Microsoft planned on selling the Windows 7 upgrade between $79, for the basic edition, to over $200, for the ultimate edition. Now Microsoft has 2 choices.

Choice 1: Sell Windows 7 at a similarly low price. This means that Microsoft would have to sell many more copies than they originally planned in order to get a good return on their investment.

Choice 2: Sell Windows 7 at their original target price. As soon as they would announce these prices, Apple would put new commercials of PC vs MAC where they would compare their prices and show that Windows is more expensive than Mac. This would be a stab directly at Microsoft’s current “I’m a PC” ads showing that Macs are too expensive.

Either way, Apple has put Microsoft in a position that they did not want to be in. After the Vista PR nightmare, the upgrade to Windows 7 is the most anticipated Windows upgrade since going from 3.1 to 95. Apple had to try to take that away from Microsoft.

Love the Show.

Guys,

I am sold on the 3GS. The feature set is a rock solid upgrade and kills
almost all the reasons a Palm Pre would be in the running. Still, the
weak link is AT & T, which I hate. But, I hate all carriers, so it is a
wash. Some of the limitations that ATT will put on the phone’s
usability, like tethering, will be negated by the jailbreaking
community, who will enable it. I doubt we will see a Pre jailbreaking
community. So, I still say that the only answer for Sprint (not Palm,
because they will be spreading the device over other carriers) is to
become the value brand. Offer better data packages and cheaper plans.
Otherwise, they are toast when the Pre hits Verizon.

Respectfully,

Clayton

Hey Buzz Crew,

I’m a relatively new listener, so I apologize if you’ve already covered this. I’ve recently learned of a machine called the EBM or “Espresso Machine” (http://www.ondemandbooks.com/hardware.htm). It’s a “book ATM” that is about the size of an office copy machine and can print and bind books to order. Their site claims that this machine will print a 300-page book in less than four minutes at a production cost of a penny per page. An NPR story reports that the machines retail cost about $175,000. (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=104644575).

I was wondering about the crew’s opinion on this as it relates to the kindle. This seemingly cheap and more environmentally friendly way to produce books would be enough to convince me to try this contraption. Do you think this technology could catch on? If so, how do you think it would affect the publishing industry and reading community?

Keep up the good work!

Christine, the music teacher

Hi guys,

I wanted to put my two cents in about the omelette in plastic. This
form of cooking if called sous-vide, under vacuum in french
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sous_vide).

Basically, you put whatever you want to eat in a vacuum sealed bag and
then cook it in hot water for some period of time. This is a very
popular way of cooking meat because you can cook the meat at 140
degrees Fahrenheit and you get the meat rare from edge to edge, it
might not look very good, pink throughout, but you could grill it for
a few seconds to get a charred exterior. The omelette in the zip lock
bag is pretty much the exact same thing just instead of meat you put
eggs and veggies and bacon. Sous-vide is a great way to make pulled
pork because by definition you cannot overheat the meat and thus you
can leave the meat in there for hours and even days.

As for the plastic, most zip lock bags do have on the manufacturer’s
site or the box it came in a max temp for the bag to be used under so
you do not want to over heat it. When heating up plastic, though, only
some kinds, the plastic releases a form of estrogen that can affect
mammary glands and in general is not good for you
(http://www.bio-medicine.org/biology-news/Compounds-in-plastic-packaging-act-as-environmental-estrogens-altering-breast-genes-585-1/).
However, there are special food grade plastics that do not have the
same compounds and withstand heat to a better degree and these food
grade plastics are the ones that should be used for the sous-vide,
though, one of those extra-tough zip lock bags used in water under the
max temp should be ok for making the omelettes.

Sure we talked about how Brian Tong rents his shoes, and got some insight into Rafe's love of Mila Jovanovic, but the big news is the first look at the Palm Pre. Rafe has it in his hands during the show. We also Dig Diggs new takeson ads. But will the Diggers?

Hi Buzz Crew,

While discussing new video features announced for the Xbox 360 during show #987, Tom made a side comment indicating that he removed the ability from his remote to turn off his Xbox because he didn’t want it to shut down while he was trying to download something big. I just wanted to mention to Tom that you can actually set up your Xbox to download while powered off, so you don’t have to worry about leaving it on and logged in if you have a bunch of things queued up.

Quoting Xbox.com: (https://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/nxe/xboxlive/xboxlivemarketplace/marketplace/managedownloads.aspx)
“If you don't have time to wait for a download to complete, you can let your console finish your downloads even after you’ve turned it off. The console enters a low-power state and the power light blinks every five seconds during background downloads. When your downloads are completed, it turns off automatically.

To enable background downloading, go to My Xbox, System Settings, Console Settings, Shutdown.”
A handy feature that’s been in place for quite awhile but unfortunately buried in the settings.

Happy downloading,
Love.The.Show.

Hi Buzz crew

Hearing Tom talk about Opera Mini passing Safari as the most popular mobile browser (explained below) annoyed me; as the big Opera news yesterday was the release of the Opera 10 Beta 1!!

==Opera 10 Beta 1==
http://www.opera.com/next
* New looks by John Hicks, the FF logo designer
* 40% faster rendering and JavaScript engine (!!!)
* Opera Turbo: Centralised compression proxy (for netbooks on public- and airport wifi)
* Thumbnail previews in the tab bar
* From only nine to up to 26 speed dials
* Integration with popular webmail providers (for mailto: links)
* Inline spell-checking (yeha, that one took years)

== Opera Mini ==
AND regarding Opera Mini, the reason Opera Mini is so popular is that it is just a regular Java application. That means that it runs on almost any modern phone, not only smart phones.

Opera Mini now comes pre-installed on most (!) phones from Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, Nokia, and HTC. This is being pushed on the manufactures because Opera Mini pushed more than 122 million MB of data (January 2009) though their networks. That is a lot of monetizable mobile data.

Daniel, the opera singer from Oslo (really an Opera employee, but singer sounds cooler)

=====
Team Buzz –

It turns out that that Fire Fighters, not Boy Scouts, will help consumers with the DTV transition. I stumbled across this webpage: http://www.iafc.org/dtv which outlines a program which started in May between the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and the FCC. The FCC is in essence recruiting volunteers from the fire service to go into people’s homes that are having trouble setting up their converter boxes. A good move on the FCCs part to get a group of volunteers with instant credibility who don’t have some kind of ulterior motive like let’s say, stealing from some unsuspecting person who simply wanted a different kind of “hook up”. The Fire Service, and all of public safety for that matter, is motivated by having the spectrum television stations are currently sitting on freed up. Once those frequencies become available, a large chunk will be used for increasing public safety bandwidth.

Hey Buzz Crew,

I came across this article while doing some research at my job on social networking and Web 2.0 (Yes I’m getting paid for it!!). It is about the process of using the missed call log of cell phones to convey messages in a cheaper form then making calls or text messaging. Its a great summary of BOL goodness in preparation for the 1000th Episode, cheeting the phone company, full of acronyms to keep the squares confused, lack of voice mail in India, and some great retro HTML Coding. Hope you like it, see you in the live show today, @z1g1

Palm Pre working with iTunes. Palm is promoting this precarious pairing, but perhaps people purchasing the Pre should prepare to be pissed-off presently; the iPod program probably won’t permit the provided product to perform properly post-patch, as previously pondered on the podcast: http://daringfireball.net/2009/06/webos_itunes_integration

Hey guy,

You knew I would write in on this one….

Indeed xbxo live achievements were developed by a psychologist (among
others). John Hopson, a Duke PhD in animal cognition (obviously a wise
young man) helped come up with achievements. We met at FuturePlay 2007
where he was giving a keynote, and I was speaking, blogging and podcasting.
We got to talking, and I mentioned how achievements were clearly “…simply
a Variable Interval…” and he interrupted me and said “reinforcement
schedule”. To learn more about reinforcement schedules just pick up a copy
of “Schedules of Reinforcement” by Ferrster and Skinner (1957). It is even
better than reading Conditioned Reflexes (Pavlov, 1927) for putting one to
sleep…

Oddly enough, we talked some more, and had I taken the job at Duke I was
offered in 1998 I would have been John’s PhD supervisor.

We're all predictably aghast at Belkin's fake user reviews, but at least they apologised. Cooley and Tom think netbooks are done, but Veronica disagrees. And finally Cooley accidentally invents self-eating soup.

Hey BOL, I’ve got the perfect use for these metamaterials that redirect microwaves. HOT FREAKING FUDGE ICE CREAM! So imagine microwavable ice cream. You have ice cream on the bottom which has a layer of the metamaterial over it, which separates it from yummy hot chocolate fudge and nuts. So you can pop it into the microwave and hit the Hot Fudge button (its the one right next to Popcorn). The metamaterial keeps the ice cream from melting while the chocolate melts. You take it out, slip out the metamaterial, and you have a ready-made hot fudge sunday. Now if they can make a chocolate metamateril that somehow melts itself while protecting the ice cream, there’d beno extra waste.

Love the show,

In episode 892, Molly & Rafe mentioned that they are awash in promotional thumb-drives. If you or anyone in the audience is looking to offload those drives and do some good at the same time, you might consider giving them away. Visit http://www.inveneo.org/?q=Thumbdrive, which appears to be collecting them for teachers, students and relief camp workers in Uganda. I don't have any personal knowledge about this organization, but it seems like a good cause.

Keep up the good work,

Christopher the Administrative Law Judge in New York.

Hey Buzz crew,

Just listened to Wednesday's show, and I have a correction to make to Cooley: Wikipedia says that the Tesla Roadster gets around 244 miles on a single charge, not 120. Jason Calacanis also says that it gets around 220 miles on a charge.(Can be confirmed in any of the October to November podcasts of Twit where he is on) Nevertheless, it would be interesting to see how much the Chinese car would go on sale for, since Teslas aren't cheap.

Also, a link to an article about the superbar in Windows 7 that might help Jose out: http://www.neowin.net/news/main/09/01/15/windows-7-superbar-overview It makes it a bit easier to get used to the superbar's new way of doing things.

Love the show,
Victor the PC games advocate (previously known as victor from bc)
