So the European Union and Microsoft have finally settled their differences and will begin the browser ballot with no less than 12 browsers to choose from. Is this a good thing? Also, Intel is now under the gun from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. What did it do this time? Listen to find out. And Cherrypal is selling a $99 laptop it bills as slow and sufficient. Nice.

So a fun story is making waves in Britain:

Basically the internet masses are “Raging against the Machine” known as X-Factor and trying to get a 1992 single from Rage Agaunst the machine as #1 christmas song over the new release from the XFactor champion.
Here’s the kicker…it’s working!
Helping it, is that you can get the single for 29 pence! (~ 47¢).

Hello Buzz Crew,
I have just listened to a recent episode in which you talked about the
proposed Internet censorship in Australia and I have to say the proposal
is far worse than what is commonly reported in the media. Wikileaks
disclosed the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s blacklist
of prohibited websites a few months ago. It turns out that the list
contains perfectly legal websites including that of a political group
http://www.somebodythinkofthechildren.com/acma-blacklist-leaked-contains-legal-websites/
Despite this controversy I am shamed to say that my Government went
ahead with it’s planned trial of Internet filtering. However after the
trial ended Stephen Conroy refused to release the official report. We
can only speculate as to why, but he did however provide information and
consultation to just one political party, The Australian Christian Lobby
which has been lobbying very hard in support of the censorship proposal.
No doubt they have allot of agendas they would like to see filled by the
new regime. As a strong supporter of free-speech I find this deeply
worrying. Once a filter is in place every morally bankrupt organization
and individual will be able to apply pressure to have anything they
personally don’t like, blocked.

Thanks & keep up the good work.

In episode 1126 you talked about Chrome versus Firefox. I have to stay that I would completely switch over to Chrome, it loads faster, is a smoother GUI, and loads pages faster, except that Firefox dowloads things faster. Out here we have a bandwidth shortage, and I end up surfing with Chrome and then copying the URL to Firefox to download things. It’s frustrating. If Chrome/Google get better download performance then I’ll be won over.

Hey Buzz Crew,
I don't know if any of you have been paying attention, but with all of the discussion of Verizon and AT&T's 3G coverage, it seems that T-Mobile's progress has been overlooked. T-Mobile is currently adding 3G coverage at a rate of one new city every 1.5 days, with a goal of having 3G available to two-thirds of the US population by the end of 2009. They are also deploying everywhere at 7.2 Mbps, putting them at the top in terms of 3G speed. They also plan to have broad access to HSPA+ (21 Mbps) by mid-2010.
Right now they certainly don't have the largest 3G network, but they sure are bringing their own online very quickly.
List of Cities added recently:

Facebook's changing its privacy policy, and Molly and Rafe predict there will be groups. I don't think anyone cares about regional groups, but hey, I could be wrong. We also talk about why Steve Jobs personally approved an app that currently doesn't work. And Richard comes up with a brilliant idea for the future of news.

Google phone a certainty?I think they are right… But noting the way many people think. HTC
made the last google developer phone and in doing so got access to the
source code for 1.0 very early. This almost forced a partnership on
the G1. Simmilarly google is essentially forced to work with a
particular manufacture every launch in ever generation ( i.e. Droid
2.0). I would argue that in an attempt to not be “evil” that the phone
they launch is a developer version that will allow them to more
tightly control a symultainous launch. Thier current version is a bit
dated.
Making thier own consumer phone bypassing both hardware partners AND
wireless carriers is risky and potentially evil. Specifically given
that they have advertised this project as an open project.

On my way home I was thinking...what if Netflix came out with an app that allowed you to use your phone to scan the barcode of a movie while in a store to add it to your queue? Is there any reason why google hasn’t put http://www.google.com as a search hit on the list when looking for the term ’search’ anyway?

Hi Buzz Crew,
You are making so much fun of the idea of Windows 7 installation parties. Well actually... this kind of parties are VERY popular and called: install fest (just type into Google). What you will see is a LOT of Linux install fest parties
Microsoft communities also organize install fests. Usually they take place in some bar/pub where you sit with a bunch of geek friends and install a new release of some product. And after that you sum up the finished installations, unfinished once, also there are some disasters like a burned laptop etc. ![]()
So to finish this email - the idea is not new, not only MS does it but a lot of user communities

Buzz Crew,
I’m one of those very few users that have a smart phone (AT&T Tilt) without a data plan. I want the phone for other purposes that do not require the plan. I bought it used and I am not under contract. Is it your understanding that they will force ME to add a data plan, even though I’m not under contract?
By the way, within a few minutes of moving your SIM card to another phone, the AT&T website will change to show that your phone is the one into which you have installed the SIM card. My family has been “swapping” phones around a little bit lately and I was amazed at how fast they detected the change.

Dear Buzz Crew:
This is Siavash, alive and yet fighting.
You think airing trilogy of Lord of the Rings is a big thing? The channel 3 is going to AIR the whole Prison Break series, ha? What you have to say about that? I've heard it is 3 episode a day.
This is really stupid, let me tell you something, in Iran we have 7 channels over the air, analog and digital with standard definition, in Tehran less that 50% of people watch the Iranian TV and they mostly watch satellite TV. And most of the people have watched these movies and series on DVD, so who cares that they are aired on TV?
And there are some people like me that never watch Iranian TV. I don't have a antenna for Iran's TV , and I only watch satellite TV.( who chooses watching Mullahs instead of watching MTV?)
My source of movies and series are satellite TV and torrent download (sorry, but no copyright law here and I really love to watch the latest series and movies).
Series like Prison break, Lost, Heroes, Office, Friends, CSI , 90210 , 24 and etc are big hits and everyone watches them in DVD or downloaded Divx.
So, all I'm trying to say is that it does not matter if they air Lord of the Rings or Prison Break, because at least in Tehran no one cares and more than 60% percent or more don't watch any Iranian TV. We can buy a copied DVD for 2$ or an original one for 15$, now I buy BlueRay disks for 30$, why should we care what is one the TV when we can watch it with better quality and no censor?
They are doing anything they can to keep people off the streets but they can't, even one day marathon of Angelina Jolie movies can't do it.
Best Regards
Siavash

It’s not enough that humans gave robots a place to congregate to plan our demise, now we’ve adapted them with the ability to extract fuel from the very nectar of life. All that innocent experimentation with fuel cells that run on blood has led to this, a flesh-eating clock. This prototype time-piece from UK-based designers James Auger and Jimmy Loizeau traps insects on flypaper stretched across its roller system before depositing them into a vat of bacteria. The ensuing chemical reaction, or “digestion,” is transformed into power that keeps the rollers rollin’ and the LCD clock ablaze. The pair offers an alternative design fueled by mice, another contraption whose robotic arm plucks insect-fuel from spider webs with the help of a video camera, and a lamp powered by insects lured to their deaths with ultraviolet LEDs. Man, this is so wrong it has to be right.

You had a round of derision for english units on the replacement for the
space shuttle. I’m glad to hear that you will be reporting the weight
of netbooks in grams, not pounds. The screen sizes will no longer be in
inches. Your CD’s and DVD’s will no longer be 5 1/2 inches. You won’t
be reporting how many pounds you lost on your last diet, and you will
report that the iPhone masses 0.135 kg instead of weighing 4.8 ounces.
As a practicing engineer (29 years), I have an intuitive understanding
of my designs in inches. I can convert to metric easily when needed,
but I have a storehouse of experience in English units. Unfortunately,
I’m passing that on to newly minted engineers, as well.

First segment is from the morning till the noon around 12:00 to 13:00 that every one goes to work and do their usual stuff and from 14:00 to night we are on the streets fighting for a free and new Iran. So through this hard time (drink) one of the thing keeping me fresh , and eager to have some hours to myself is CNET podcasts, it makes me forget about everything and enters me in the world of tech and fun. Few days ago Natalie's theory for the Panasonic remote control on Gadgettes made me laugh so hard, I could not remember the last time I laughed like that.
Anyway, keep up the good work; I appreciate your care and attention, hoping for Freedom in Iran.
Best Regards
Siavash
In this case it refers to Jeff Bakalar's face, but it could also refer to Amazon, Steve Jobs, and Skype. Well at least in part. Find out all about all of these things in today's scary and caliente episode. --Tom

What is that face??
Hi guys!
Regarding your comments about the SF fiber cut on Friday’s show, I can perhaps add some information for you.
I was a cable splicer and a lineman for five years at a nameless communications company that starts with “Q.”
I can tell you that most all underground cables are indeed pressurized. In fact, when I started, there was an actual Air Pressure department (which was merged with the Cable Maintenance department after several rounds of layoffs). Their sole job was to maintain the fittings, air lines, and such. Even copper cables are pressurized. This is mainly to keep water out, but can also serve to alert technicians to accidental or deliberate damage. At each Central office, there is a room full of huge compressors and air dryers that feed into the cables down in the vault and can keep many miles of cable under pressure.
When we would go into a manhole to work on cables, we had to call our air pressure guy and let him know what cable we were working in so that he could ignore the alarms. We also had “dry air” connections in our trucks that we would hook up to fittings in the manhole we were in to lessen the load on the dryers at the CO. This was especially important when we were working a section of cable that was very far away. Believe it or not, these cables are under 10 to 12 PSI of pressure (your car tires are about 30 PSI).
Just though you’d be interested. Love the show.
Mike
P.S. None of this is confidential or “secret” information, just obscure.

Hy Buzz Crew,
I’m actually kind of excited to do my first well actually but in episode 950, you talked about how Amazon has started to sell xbox live codes to redeem xbox games that are served over xbox Live. Tom had mentioned that this method seemed clunky since it would require you to enter the code into your xbox for every purchase, well actually you can redeem your market place code online via the xbox.com website and I think pushes the content to your xbox once it logs on to live. Granted I don’t think this is really that smooth of an implementation but at least you’ll have copy and paste at your finger tips (well maybe not on an iPhone :/ ). However, I still think this is a great way to promote xbox live game content since it basically gives this basically acts like an additional store front outside to the traditional marketplace interface. On that note I wonder if the code system will eventually break down, especially with all the news about the iTunes gift card codes being compromised. Just a thought, thanks for the great podcast. love the show.

$150 for TWC’s “unlimited” plan is NOT the answer.
You can upgrade to a business class connection (no caps) and pay a lot less. Only problem is then there is a contact (the benefit of that being that there is an SLA):
* Teleworker Plan
* 10mbps down, 1.5mbps up, $79.95/mo for 24-36mo, No installation fee, NO CAPS.
Thanks Buzz Crew,

On BOL 916 you talked about the “Stolen Microsoft device remotely wiped the Windows Mobile 6.5 device”.
While Molly was quiet right that this remote wipe feature is a popular option for enterprise grade cell phones solutions such as Blackberries.
This feature only wipes data from the device not the operating system from the device. If Microsoft can remotely wipe the operating system from a device this is something new and quite different from other phone wipes.
Tom hope you get over your bad cheese incident…
All the best,

Hey bol,
Regarding getting banned on xbox live.
Lifetime bans are done via your hardware address too, not just your account.
So even if you sell the xbox it still won’t be able to log onto live.
I think temporary bans are done via accounts.

Making cables vanish isn’t that difficult for the typical DIY’er. Take
a pizza cutting wheel and cut a channel in the wallboard wide enough to
accommodate your bundle of cables. Dress the cables into the channel.
Cover the channel with wallboard tape, cover with ‘mud’, let dry, sand,
and repaint. Simple eh?

I think we should figure out how to make this Steve Jobs’ leave of
Absence into a gambling pool. We buy squares for $100 and pick the
dates for his return. We just need somebody to figure the payouts
and the time period for his return plus/minus a few days will create
the squares. What if he never returns or if he returns many years
later?

Hello all,
I teach a course on neuropharmacology and we talk a lot about caffeine.
Some interesting stats:
About 190 000 000 North Americans show withdrawal symptoms from caffeine,
showing they are caffeine dependent.
Adult humans are caffeine metabolizing machines, we are very efficient at
it, the half life of caffeine in an adult is oh maybe between 30 and 120 min
whereas in nonhuman animals and kids (toddlers) it is about 3.5 DAYS
A majority of workplace spats that end in firings happen between 9 and 9:30
am. There is speculation that much of this is driven by caffeine
withdrawal.
In most research a cup of coffee is defined as a teacup sized serving. Most
of us drink more than that per serving, and the coffee that is brewed for
such studies tends to be weaker than that which most people drink.
I have no idea if this is germane to yesterday’s discussion, as I have had
only 1 cup of coffee today….

Dear BOLers,
I missed you guys. I missed so much that I went to the BuzzOutLoud wikia and downloaded (randomly) some episodes from the past three years of BOLing. I got to hear the first voicemail from Shalin, the time when dr. Karl was just a med student and a lot of great stuff: Tom saying that would license for free his voice for TomTom’s GPS, Molly confusing hermetically for hydrogenation sealed and Veronica talking “Brazil for the win” were the best ones I’ve hear
And when I downloaded the best of 2006 episode, I noticed it was too short. And the same happened with the best of 2007 and 2008 episodes. So I figure a way to not let this happen again this year: a page on the wikia! http://buzzoutloud.wikia.com/wiki/Best_of_2009
Now the listeners will have a chance to put in their favorite buzzing moments of 2009 and help Jason to edit a longer (or even two!) Best of 2009 episode.
Hope you like it and, as always, love the show and keep up the good work!

Hey Buzz crew,
I just wanted to make Tom feel just a little bit better about his predictions for last year. Specifically, the whole simultaneous broadcast on TV and the Internet thing. In the U.K. at least the BBC started doing just that in the last month (so still 2008) or so on BBC iPlayer. I think it started in early December or something.
Anyway hope you guys had a nice vacation.

Ever since I switched to over the air digital television, my life has been a TV horror film.
90 percent of the time the signal is so poor it cuts in and out every minute or two. If I am lucky enough to get a good signal I can’t move. Every time I or my roommate walks through the house, the signal cuts out. The resolution may be better, but of course it is, that's what happens when you shrink the picture. My screen now has a three-inch black border for most programs. It sucks! I was much happier with a little fuzzy picture and good audio, than a screen refresh rate of 1/minute and no audio, or almost worse when every actor suddenly becomes a gou’uld (not sure why that happens).
I’ve also noticed that the signal is the worst during peak viewing hours. You guys know if DTV has some type of shared bandwidth?
