On the 40th anniversary of the moon landing, we sadly report on the state of the broken toilet in the International Space Station. It means astronauts have to split up which toilets they use in order to load balance. No. Seriously. Plus we touch on the Amazon 1984 ironic mistake of the year.

Hey Buzz Crew,
Interesting article on today's New York Times talking about why Japanese smartphones haven't gone global:
Despite their great technological advance (the article cites e-mail capabilities in 1999, camera phones in 2000, third-generation networks in 2001, full music downloads in 2002, electronic payments in 2004 and digital TV in 2005), Japanese phones suffer from "Galapagos syndrome", meaning that they "are like the endemic species that Darwin encountered on the Galápagos Islands -- fantastically evolved and divergent from their mainland cousins" (citing a professor from Tokyo's Keio University).
The article also makes an interesting point about how much Japanese manufacturers are focused on developing hardware and gave little or no attention to software, unlike western manufacturers (like Apple, with iTunes and the App Store)...which could be one of the reasons why Japanese manufacturers aren't successful internationally.
Thought you would like to read it.
Love the show.

Hey Guys,
I just wanted to let you hear from someone who appreciates
ComcastBonnie. When I had my Comcast service installed, the tech
didn't bring cablecards like requested. I twittered my frustration and
within five minutes Bonnie replied asking if she could help. By the
time we finished, she had the tech's supervisor call about the problem
and offered to have someone drive the 20 miles to my house with
cablecards on a Friday evening. She even called a few hours later to
check up on the situation.
So unless you are a total d-bag, she seems to do everything that she
can to help.

I just received a phone call from Comcast's Executive PR Department this morning regarding my blog and Twitter posts. After a year of calling and begging for a technician I will now have a special "PR Repair Technician" come out first thing tomorrow morning and fix the lines. I now also have my own personal PR Liaison to call if I ever have any trouble again.
Yes milking the situation was totally a douchey thing to do, but sometimes its the only way to get a giant company to actually listen to you. Cindy Wood, my liaison, did not even ask me to take my blog post down. Instead she wanted my input on to how they can make their Twitter support my effective since social media is a brave new world for them and they're learning as they go along. Even though I still hate Comcast, I like to give credit where its due and give them a shoutout for handling the situation in a classy manner.
I'm writing this from my phone since they managed to accidentally cut off my Internet access completely until tomorrow, so please excuse any typos :)
Best,
The Rocco
Well, according to one listener, you can't get away from underwear in Japan so the Google StreetView cameras shouldn't try. Also if you deleted those pictures of you in your underwear from Facebook, I can still see them. In fact, deleting photos from social media doesn't make it as deleted as you might like. We also talk Pirate Bay, RealDVD, and other court cases.

Regarding your story on how you can develop an inner compass – I went to college in Idaho and it was pretty much common knowledge that anyone who had grown up in Idaho had an internal compass. They always know where north is, even in a closed room. The reason for this is most of the towns in Idaho are set up in grid system so that to get around you constantly have to think about where north is. Having grown up in California, I still struggle with directions that reference north & etc. and find it frustrating how much people in Idaho (& other grid-based cities) assume that it is obvious.
Maybe since Jason is from Boise he also has experienced this?

Hi Buzz Crew, this is Josh from American Fork, Utah.
I was pleased to hear that the developer of Podcaster, which failed Apple’s approval process, was able to get Rss Player into the App Store. But as he mentioned, the app dosen’t currently have a podcast directory. The only way to subscribe is to input the URL of the RSS feed, but since the iPhone dosen’t have copy/paste, this can get quite difficult, since most podcasts (including CNET’s) don’t have an easy to remember URL. I got an idea, however, from the app itself on how to simplify this process.
On Rss Player, there is a screen where you enter the address of the feed. Under the location box, the developer explains how to enter the URL of a feed. And just in case you don’t know where to start, the developer suggestts you try his favorite podcast by entering http://tinyurl.com/ourfav. This address redirects to the Buzz Out Loud .xml file, and is a lot simpler to type than the direct URL (which is http://feeds2.feedburner.com/cnet/buzzoutloud?format=xml)
So I took his idea, and simplified the URL’s of some other CNET podcasts using TinyURL.com. Here’s what I have:

Not this is going to make a difference against the far too expensive blu-ray, but if the Chinese could get it together (not gonna happen though) and get some support for English language studios, this could actually be a threat to blu-ray, why? Price for the units and the disc’s.
Even if they could not get that, they ought to promote this format heavily to places like India, Middle East, Africa etc.

Hi, Buzz Crew.
Tom — I’m ready to do my part to fund alternative energy. You
mentioned that a few distillers are going to start generating energy
from whisky by-products. Of those, only the Macallan made the cut
onto your list of “Tom-approved” whiskies. So now I’m curious: which
other distillers do you wish were moving to this green energy source?
Of course, this is simply a roundabout way of asking for a whisky

Hello.
Hi Buzz crew,
First, I want to say Molly is right, regulations for Formula One is extremely precise for engines. It must be an atmospheric 2.4 liters V8 fuel powered engine. The fuel needs to follow the Euro95 norm for pump fuel and must contain 5 percent of bio-fuel .
But mainly I want to point out that next year, F1 will be hybrids, the regulation is changing to allow for hybrid design (similar to what exists in regular cars). And also, even though there is a lot of fuel used for all the races during the year, this is completely offset by new technology developed for those cars. I cannot remember the exact details, but I believe Renault F1 sold some aerodynamics design to plane manufacturers that help them reduce plane fuel consumption by a significant percentage.

Hello Tom, Molly, and Jason
This is Daniel from The Bronx. I wanted to ask you guys (mostly Tom) a question about your iPhone. I have a 16GB original and wanted to know if your phone gets or got hot while in use. Here’s what made me want to ask. I got my iPhone a week before the update to 1.1.4 and I noticed that it would run hot when talking on it. Also, up around the SIM card would get warm when using Wi-Fi.
It happened from the beginning and I haven’t read anything about ‘hot iPhones’ in forums or on CNET anywhere, so I thought it was normal. I stopped putting my warm phone to my head and started using the headphones to make and receive calls as a solution. Then came the miracle we all know as the 2.0 Firmware Update and my mysterious ‘hot iPhone’ had been cured! That was all fine and dandy until 2.0.2. Now my iPhone has a fever again. I just wanted to know if I was alone in the world and if so, should I look into getting my phone repaired/replaced.
Love the show and thanks.

About those 'self-destructing' DVDs
WWDC announcements
Even as an Apple fanboy, I am exhausted by the constant speculation over
the upcoming WWDC. There are so many rumors flying around, that I
decided to take a quick look at the last “SDK Roadmap” video from
Cupertino. There it was, loud and clear: Stevie J. said (and listed it
on the screen) “The iPhone SDK and Enterprise software will be released
in Late June”, that was months ago and there’s no reason to think they
would deviate from that path, which is why they called it the “SDK
Roadmap”.
That leaves one to question what will be discussed at WWDC: My Guess: 1.
Demo of latest apps for the SDK and current progress with a late June
release. 2. New 3G iPhone, with beefed up storage and battery life to
take full advantage of the upcoming SDK and Enterprise software. 3.
“Mobile Me” will replace .Mac and all of the features will be listed
(with Demo) and available that day (this could be the “one more thing”
thing) 4. My wish: A new revamped laptop of some sort, maybe a new MBP,
but more likely the latest version of OS X
No, the irony is not lost on me that I just threw my hat into the ring
for continuing rumors and speculation of WWDC. Oh well…such is the
fate of an Apple Fanboy.

Sensible units
Hey BOL,
I found this via the Woot! WWWoundup. It’s called Sensible Units
(http://www.sensibleunits.com/) It takes boring standard units like
meters, kilograms, feet, pounds, or acres and converts them into
measurements using real objects.
For instance, I’m 6′4″ and 180lbs, and I live on a quarter acre of land.
According to Sensible Units, I’m as tall as 16 CD’s side-by-side, as
heavy as 16 average cats, and live on a tract of land that is as big as
2.9 IMAX screens (which all of a sudden seems so sad).
The cool thing is that doesn’t always use the same standards every time
you enter the same amount. So my being 6′4″ also equates to 1.4 Alaskan
moose antler spans, 38 AA batteries, or 9.7 five month old human fetuses
end to end (gross).
Unfortunately, there are no time conversions.
Anyhow, I thought Buzztown might enjoy this.

Say no to Indy? Not likely
As a manager at a small, independent movie theatre (with a 20 screen AMC
theatre literally across the highway), I asked our owner what it would
take for him to refuse a movie such as Indiana Jones, and his answer
was, “There is NO situation where we could say no.” Small theatres that
refused a major movie like that, even with deliberately tampered-with
audio, would simply be dropped from distribution. It would take AMC,
Regal or some other major chain to say THEY won’t accept this before
things would change.

Scientific imagers
Why are scientific images not color? It has nothing to do with bandwidth. Think about images from earthbound telescopes. They are also often black and white. The reason is that the imager is designed to provide informative images, not purdy pictures. For standard imaging, we sample red, green, and blue, but a scientist might not be interested in those specific colors. So a scientific imager is often a very high-quality black-and-white CCD in front of which a variety of filters can be placed, allowing for an image to be taken in a number of useful colors that might, for instance, sample emission-lines for a specific element. These images are much more informative than sampling just red, green, and blue. Plus, all of that weird pixel shifting and interpolation is avoided quite nicely. For a really good description, I recommend you check out episode 85 of Astronomycast about detectors (www.astronomycast.com). On that note, I should point out that I am not an imaging specialist, but that’s my understanding of the problem, so enjoy!

So, how good is the Kindle now? And how will they implement it in the rest of the world (the world that does not use EVDO).
Best regards…
Khaled A.
