A new study shows that Internet Explorer 8 is the most secure browser in the world. Who paid for the study? Guess. We also uncover the Twitter mafia and a new alliance to fight malware. And Molly's dream of running her car on chickens comes closer to reality.

NOTE: There is no video for today's episode due to a technical error. That's right, you can go ahead and blame Jason for this one. Sorry. --Jason

Hey BuzzCrew-

Rare and elusive as it is for BOL to breach my field, I do love it. In Episode 1044 you discussed fake DNA for crime scenes etc. Now you were worried that this could be 1) Easily done 2) not discovered.

Well worry not, it was slightly explained in the NY Times article and a little was scene in the original paper’s abstract. The simplistic explanation is that natural DNA is methylated, a chemical process done by the cell to prevent certain genes from activated when not needed. But any DNA created by scientists isn’t methylated. There are quick and easy tests that can be done to prove whether DNA is methylated or not. As for how “simple” this process is to replicate DNA and fake it, well--in my world, relatively, I could probably do this in a few tries and be a pro by next month. As for your common murderer/thief– not likely to have the equipment or more importantly the MONEY to do so.

This would have to be a grand conspiracy and well thought-out.

Sadly we as tax payers will now have to fork over even more for our justice system/labs to add this extra experiment onto the forensics process.

And let me also say, most genetics folks always knew this was possible- just it has now been peer reviewed & published.

Cheers from Oxford

Hey BOL, it’s Oliver in Portland, Oregon.

In yesterday’s episode 1044 an emailer said he was surprised you hadn’t tested the voicemail-bypass tip. I’m writing to say I’m even more baffled that you never hit up Google for a solution. Here’s a link to a Lifehacker article from a few weeks ago. By pressing one-star-pound you guarantee instant access to the beep, regardless of the carrier. Points to you though for the conclusion that Verizon only sometimes works when pressing “one” – the article confirms this!

Sorry to drag this story into a third show, but I think your listeners would appreciate a more solid conclusion. Love listening to you guy!

Cheers.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to let you know that in Louisiana Tyson Foods is building a bio-diesel Plant that
turns chicken fat into high quality bio-diesel and jet fuel. So Molly is right when she said “we grow a lot of chickens, maybe we should start shoving them into gas tanks”.

Also, on the topic of the SECs ban on the use of Twitter and other social media during games. Les Miles, the head coach of LSU, which is an SEC school, said he will
be twittering before, during and after games. I guess the rule passed by the SEC was meant to discourage coaches and players as well as fans.

Thanks for the time.

Hate to be one of those “well actually” individuals but when Tom said that nobody used Pointcast I felt the need to geekily speak up as its only apologist (no doubt :-)

I was in tech college at the time Pointcast was around and didn’t have anything but really slow dialup at home. Getting a bunch of articles pushed to my laptop that I could then read at my own comfort when I got home was fantastic. I also really enjoyed the interface and the story ticker. Pointcast was Google reader before RSS and I still wish Google reader would get its own desktop news ticker of some sort.

Hello All,

When I heard of Radio Shack’s name change, I had to laugh, since there is a restaurant called the Shack here in Southeastern Connecticut. They serve great meals, and their motto is “Life is short, have pie.” Why would I go “The Shack” since I could go the other Shack to get pie?

Take care,

Seems to me the interest is fading. Sony may have really screwed up on this format, just like every other format they've come up with.

Dear Buzz Crew,

I have to comment on the gaze-tracking privacy software discussed in
Wednesday's episode 1014. Tom was absolutely correct that it shows
normal text to the authorized user and gibberish to everyone else.
(At least for the high-end product Chameleon; the consumer product
PrivateEye just obscures the whole screen.) I guess not everyone has
taken a visual perception class, so I'll try to explain.

We have the intuitive impression that our eyes behave like cameras –
constantly reading in all the pixels, and smoothly panning around from
object to object. Not so at all! Half of your visual cortex is
devoted to the central two degrees of your visual field. That works
out to half an inch of good focus area at a standard reading distance
of 14 inches. Moreover, your eyes constantly jump around in
incredibly fast, involuntary movements called saccades, only pausing
for about 200 milliseconds at a time. During the saccades, visual
input is suppressed. With decent gaze-tracking equipment (such as
from you local college's cognitive psychology department), you can
flash up pictures of penguins during saccades, and the user won't
notice anything odd.

Here's a video showing someone's eye movements while reading Google
search results:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w29DrEEsqT4
And yes, your eyes still jump around even when you're reading a
structured text document. Chameleon just fills everything except the
tiny, fluctuating area you're looking at with random text.

Thanks for this and all the other cool stories!

During your discussion of Google Chrome OS today, I am curious as to what impact, if any, GCOS might also have on older PCs. Since GCOS is already targeted at low-powered Netbooks, it stands to reason GCOS might also breathe some extra life into that 5-year-old laptop you were thinking of ditching. By moving a lot of the processing power from your lap to the cloud, could an unintended consequence be a reprieve on hardware's life cycle? Certainly Google wouldn't complain.

Hi buzz crew. after watching episode 1005 i was wondering since i am looking to buy a new laptop in the summer. if i get the eligibility to get the free upgrade to windows 7, is it possible to not install the upgrade on my new laptop instead install windows 7 to my desktop which is around a year old and is running windows vista ultimate? – Jonathan

**********

Hey buzz crew, Jim Gooch, buzz town Computer Forensics guy here…
Just a quick note concerning the free windows 7 upgrade program.
I’ve put off purchasing 6 computers so that I could get the upgrade today. Much to my
dismay, I was told that I was not eligible for the upgrade program because I was Downgrading
to XP and this was a Microsoft decision. so, defeated, I purchased the computers with
Vista Business and promptly called Microsoft. I was a bit miffed that Microsoft had the
gall to use all the purchases that I have made over the two last years to pad their Vista
“Sales” numbers, then turn around and tell me I had no right to the benefits of purchasing
vista if I didn’t RUN it!?! so, once I was speaking to Microsoft I was informed that Dell was
in fact wrong and that I was entitled to the free upgrade!

Armed with the website:

https://windows7upgradeoption.com/ProgramInformation.aspx

which states:

PCs that are licensed for a Program-eligible Windows Vista edition which have been down-
graded to Windows XP are also eligible for this Program. However, a clean installation of
the upgrade media will be required unless you used recovery media to install the original
Windows Vista edition pre-installed on the PC, in which case you can directly upgrade to
Windows 7.

I was able to reorder the machines with XP and got the free windows 7 upgrade.
props go to “Paul” at Microsoft Pre-Sales support for his help in this.
I thought your listeners might benefit from my plight.

Hey Buzz Crew,

In episode 1004 you reported how NASA will not convert to metric units because of “the cost”. I actually worked on the Constellation program for a few months shortly after graduating college. Almost immediately, I was horrified at what I saw from within NASA’s walls. Logisitically, engineers at NASA and most of their contractors live in the 50’s. There *are* computers present, but they’re in terrible shape and locked down to a point of being almost unusable. To install Linux on a project box I had to wait 3 months for approval from Washington (I worked at the cape), and I quit before I heard anything. In order to pull up engineering specs, you can’t simply view them as a PDF from a database. You need to look up the part number, which is truncated because the system was built the year I was born (literally), make a PHONE CALL down to the document center, put in an order for a printout, and a couple hours later pick up your printout or request them to physically scan it and then send you a PDF. Not only that, but there are major buildings in horrific disrepair, such as the Vehicle Assembly Building.

Sorry for this depressing e-mail, but people need to know about the state of what was once our nation’s crown jewel. NASA needs a major reset. It has a culture that oppressively resists change and technological investment at every opportunity to a point where I believe it actually costs them more money and potentially more lives. If Obama shut NASA’s doors (I hear Brian Cooley cheering) in favor of privatized space flight, such as Space-X, I wouldn’t be surprised nor disappointed.

Love the show!

Buzz Out Loud 999: Gosh darnit to heck, AT&T!

by Tom Merritt
  • Post a comment

Natali got a little flustered when we learned that AT&T is changing the subsidy so that folks who thought they would have to pay more might not have to. But it's OK: if you preordered, the company will refund the difference. So she calmed down eventually. We also discuss China backpedaling on the filter software, and the need to encrypt.

Buzz crew,

You have mentioned this story previously – thank you for that as I
have been the person publicizing it – but the telephone incumbent TDS
just lost its last opportunity to appeal at the Supreme Court. A full
2 days before the city would have lost the investor money (they had
one year from the lawsuit start), the Supreme Court declined to review
the Appeals Court judgment. The City is now moving forward with its
all fiber network.

I have put the details up at muninetworks.org

Thank you for mentioning this story, over the past year, folks in
Monticello took great heart that people were watching from across the
country, indeed planet when one counts your listeners.

Hey guys, just thought I’d make you aware of plans in the uk to pay
for faster broadband in the long run by charging 50p per month ontop
of our landline bills. Currently in Britain the majority of people
have a landline with a line rental payable to ‘British Telecoms’ even
if you have another provider, so a £10 per month phone package starts
to cost £20. And with the prices of mobile Internet, mobile calls and
voip services (especially being free on mobile carrier ‘Three’)
becoming more popular and cheaper it is conceivable that the only
people paying for this upgrade are going to be the ones that aren’t
actually going to require it, namely the older technophobics who will
never ditch their landline and never been online. Anyway just though
I’d let you know what was going on this side of the Atlantic. Have a
great 1000th.

Hi Buzz Crew,

Let me cut to the chase. I heard on last Friday’s episode that this 1,000th Buzz Out Loud Podcast is going to be “longer.” How much longer will it be?

As much as I enjoy listening to the daily audio podcast, a longer one is not going to work for me. If the 1,000 episode was two months ago I would have jumped for joy (I “used to” listen at work). Recently, I’ve made a deal with myself (and my wife-to-be) that leading up to our wedding, I would go to the gym in an effort to be healthier (not as fat). I begin and end my routine with Buzz Out Loud. I press “play” on my 2nd gen ipod (I know I’m behind the times) to begin my work out, and I and end it the second the closing music finishes. If I’m in the middle of a set, it doesn’t matter, I stop and I leave. You see, I HATE the BORING gym. It’s the bane of my existence.

So that said, you will KILL ME if I have to work out for an hour and a half, or god forbid, two hours. I promise I will curse your names down to the last email, caller, or heaven help us, horrible Opera reference…

Speaking of Opera, Can someone please tell me why our country is so ridiculous that a company, such as Microsoft, can’t include or make their software the “default” browser within…well…. their software? What happened to a little elbow grease? If you have a browser “Opera” and you think you should have the right to be on someone’s machine, do what every company on the planet has done to gain market-share. “Do a little advertising. Make a better product. Creatively distribute it.” Perhaps that will help you get your product to the masses & gain some name recognition. I don’t recall firefox ever having a pity-party. I don’t hear them running to big brother, crying “It’s not fair! It’s too hard for me to get into the game.” Grow up, learn to hit, and then maybe you’ll get to play. Why does everyone think they deserve a trophy?

Thanks for listening. Thanks for sometimes having unusually short podcasts. Finally, Thanks for being my daily hub into the tech world. Congratulations on 1,000!

Sincerely,
Joe Pifher (Pie-fur).

Hey guys,

I just finished listening to 984 and heard Chris asking about most
surprising stories (stories about significant tech you missed at the
time) and I have to give an “I told you so” on Facebook.

In March of 2007 I sent in a voicemail saying that the kids I work
with (I work with teenagers at a church) were shifting from Myspace
to Facebook, and that I thought it was going to blow up with
mainstream audiences. You guys weren’t buying it.

Granted, at the time it just moved away from being for-college-
students-only and they hadn’t released application support yet…but
still, there was I remember a time when you guys were Facebook doubters.

Hey Buzz Crew,

So here I am, forward deployed to Kuwait with barely enough internet access to send you this email, thinking about how I wish there was a way for me to get BOL sent to me by some other means, when the thought occurred to me to have my family back home download all the BOL episodes I am missing and mail them to me via CD on a regular basis… Well, that led to my next thought (and the reason for this email): 1000th Episode Collector’s Edition of Buzz Out Loud. It would be a DVD (or perhaps multiple DVDs) of every episode of BOL, 1 – 1000. And, of course, you could use the winning entry of the 1000th Episode art work on the label(s). You could have audio and audio/video versions (though I don’t know if I’d pay the extra cash to see Tom and Jason on a regular basis, though Natali and Molly would make up for it!) and maybe pack in one of Molly’s favorite stickers and even a t-shirt.

I know, it’s just my dream to have easy access to the episodes I missed (I only started listening around episode 730, for shame), but if something like that ever comes to fruition, I’ll be first in line to buy it!

As a side note, I have seen a Kindle in the wild here…though it had broken in transport and was being used to prop up a netbook. So maybe they are useful…hehe.

Hey BOL,

I heard Tom mention the other day that he was going to talk about
Google Earth on CNET Live. I thought I would send along some Google
Earth goodness for JaMoTo the sea turtle. Hope it’s not too late! I’ve
posted some videos online here:
http://www.wildlifetracking.org/jamoto.shtml

This is an example of how marine biologists might use Googe Earth. The
time scrubbing features in particular are really nice for visualizing
how animals move relative to their environment and to each other.

I am also attaching a KML file of JaMoTo’s track for you guys to play
with in Google Earth. Feel free to use as you like and share with
Buzztown.

The last transmission we received from JaMoTo was on May 15th of 2008.
Her tag lasted about three months, which is a little below average for
our tracking program. This doesn’t mean that anything bad happened to
JaMoTo. More likely the tag fell off, was damaged, or there was a
technical problem. We have improved our attachment technique and are
tagging more turtles this year which you can see here:
http://www.seaturtle.org/tracking/?project_id=340

Hey gaming research and brains, right up my alley!

There are a lot of data about sex differences in cognition, and empathy is among those differences. The brain areas mentioned are consistent with such results. Natali, sex hormones are one thing, brain chemistry is not just a function of those hormones. One should also keep in mind that a sex difference is not about individuals, but about groups. So you cannot say that Natali or Molly has more empathy than Tom or Jason, but you can (rather reliably) say that a random sample of women would have more empathy than a random sample of men. There is a big evolutionary explanation here, but that is another story.....

Don't get me started on confusing social constructionism and science....

Oh, BTW, I don't know if you can order mosquitoes online, but you can order fruit flies and rats. I have ordered rats on a number of occasions, and usually you buy 10 and get one free, seriously.

On and one more thinig, as a psychologist I can say clearly that Cooley has like no empathy...
