Yahoo has a new program to spread kindness. But Cooley hates it. Why? There's no app for that. We also discover the true meaning of holiday hate when Tom and Brian fight over the rights of the customer when shopping. And we review the JooJoo and Boxee. And Natali lets on that she hates Brooklyn. At least when Brooklyn has no food.

Hola Buzzito’s
In episode 1120 you guys discussed the use of a physical Amazon store as a pick up facility. I would definitely use this service as I am a college student and my textbooks are often cheaper on Amazon.com however book lists often come out too late for me to wait for shipping. The presence of a pick up facility would save me some money and I’m sure drive down the cost of books at my school’s bookstore (run by the big bad Barnes and Noble, seriously where’s my Nook).
Love the show keep up the good work ![]()

Hate to be one of those “well actually” individuals but when Tom said that nobody used Pointcast I felt the need to geekily speak up as its only apologist (no doubt
I was in tech college at the time Pointcast was around and didn’t have anything but really slow dialup at home. Getting a bunch of articles pushed to my laptop that I could then read at my own comfort when I got home was fantastic. I also really enjoyed the interface and the story ticker. Pointcast was Google reader before RSS and I still wish Google reader would get its own desktop news ticker of some sort.

Hello All,
When I heard of Radio Shack’s name change, I had to laugh, since there is a restaurant called the Shack here in Southeastern Connecticut. They serve great meals, and their motto is “Life is short, have pie.” Why would I go “The Shack” since I could go the other Shack to get pie?
Take care,
Keith
The Microsoft Yahoo hookup finally happened and now all their friends are glad the drama's over. But they're not getting hitched. Microsoft's shelling out some dough for Yahoo to use Bing and Yahoo's going to sell the crap out of it. During your discussion of Google Chrome OS today, I am curious as to what impact, if any, GCOS might also have on older PCs. Since GCOS is already targeted at low-powered Netbooks, it stands to reason GCOS might also breathe some extra life into that 5-year-old laptop you were thinking of ditching. By moving a lot of the processing power from your lap to the cloud, could an unintended consequence be a reprieve on hardware's life cycle? Certainly Google wouldn't complain.

I imagine you will discuss Microsoft’s new Vine application today. It find it an interesting concept in that it attempts to add structure to things we do already: Twitter and the emergency broadcast system for instance. Will their idea of creating a new infrastructure to “mashup” our current communication practices work? If I am going to text someone that I made it home safe, why would I want to go through Microsoft when I can directly communicate with the recipient? Are they trying to monopolize common sense? I guess buy-in by users will guide the success of the project. I am a little negative on this though. Also, when I watched the demo videos I was someone befuddled as I do not automatically equate an “emergency” with having someone walk my dog and hoping someone else is going to make me a pie? What’s with that?
Finally, I don’t like the name. Personally, when I think vine I think of hard to kill-never-stops-growing-snuffs-out-other-living-things-in-my-backyard-plant. Oh, now I know why they used it.

You discussed in EP 961 that AT&T service in NY and SF was terrible.
Just wanted to pass along that AT&T is currently overlaying 850 MHz
spectrum in ATL, NY, and SF. This is high-quality spectrum that can
penetrate impedences, even provide signals in Subways.
I believe the current spectrum used in those areas is 1950 MHz.

Hey Buzzies,
I was going to go download Opera just now from Opera.com, hoping it will launch faster then FireFox when I have Lineage 2 running (I use Chrome but L2’s anti-cheat system, GameGuard, prevents it from working). Anyways, I was greeted with a VERY retro web splash page, celebrating Opera’s 15th anniversary. You should check it out it’s pretty funny, it’s got the random ugly gif animations, even some flames at the bottom. Hmm.. Reminds me of some Geocities pages I’ve seen….
Anyways Love the show

Hey Buzz Crew:
This is Siavash, I'm a Cisco trained IT Engineer in Iran and I've been sending many mails to you that some got to the show so you may remember me.
About the Helicopter Story, generally Iranian people don't approve what the government does; please don't think of me as a terrorist listenerJ.
Kidding aside I did a little of digging in Iranian ISPs and the whole Iranian IP range and the IP that had hacked into the computer, as long as I can say, the IP belongs to a ISP, they say the IP has been dedicated to VPN connection and as their Log shows the VPN has been established somewhere in Middle East, (they don't say exactly where). So as I get it, either some one from Middle East has hacked into their servers, and used their IP address to hack the computer in USA , or there has been someone ( maybe Iranian) in middle east with access to this ISP and their servers and used their network to hack the computer.
So now all I can say is that the attack has not been inside Iran, but the identity of the hacker and it's location is still a mystery, I will do more digging on this and I will get back to you with any new and fresh info.
Love The SHOW!
Best Regards

Hi Buzzers,
You discussed in Episode 922 that the new Mac Mini has DVI instead of HDMI, and that very few HDTVs have DVI any more. That’s true, but DVI and HDMI are pretty much the same standard - it’s just that DVI only carries the video signal, and HDMI carries both video and audio together. So if you get a DVI to HDMI cable and connect it from a Mac Mini to an HDTV, it should send an HD signal just fine. You’ll just have to find some other way to handle the audio (like hooking up the audio out jack to the optical audio input on your receiver).
I agree, though - Apple should just get on the stick and add HDMI (and what’s with this “Mini DVI” port, anyway?)…
Love the show,

Great idea for a CNet Channel broadcast through CBS affiliates. I would have to say from a technology standpoint that couldn't be difficult and really shouldn't require the person to manage it. I personally have an auto updating video playlist in iTunes that nearly does this already. Just subscribe to all of your RSS feeds and then play through the list starting at a certain time every day. Once that's done playing go to an "off air" static screen until the next day, that's if you run out of video in the 24 hour period. It could probably be done with Automator and some apple scripts come to think of it. Interesting…might have to play with this for fun. jason

Sorry for any typing mistakes but I am writing this on a blackjack 2. I just wanted to let you know that I saw my first Netbook today at a coffee shop. I really wanted to get a dell mini9 but chickened out because I didn’t know how I would deal with a ridiculously small keyboard.
(Ironic I know.)
So apparently this guy with the Netbook had the same problem as me because he had a full size usb keyboard connected to it! What is the point of a tiny little glove compartment computer if you need to lug that beast around with it?

Dear BOL Crew,
First of all, thanks for a great daily podcast to keep me up to date on tech.
I will be going on a 7 month navy cruise soon and I don't want to miss my daily BOL fix. Available bandwidth during the cruise does not allow me to download podcasts or anything else. There just is not enough bandwidth. I have also tried getting BOL via your RSS feed, but it does not work again due to bandwidth limitations.
I can received email attachments, but I don't know if there is a way for me to setup before my cruise an automatic daily email attachment with the BOL audio file.
Can you recommend a solution?
Thank you! I love listening to BOL daily when I am on tierra firma.

On today's show, Brian Cooley announces that he's made the switch...I mean, the big switch. He bought an iPhone. The world briefly stopped rotating, and when it resumed, we laid down the smack on poor Jerry Yang, the Justice Department, the XM-Sirius merger, and subsequent channel flipping, and some poor guy who thought it was a good idea to call our show. Good times!

I’m surprised that Domino’s Pizza in the U.S. is only now catching up with Domino’s Pizza in the U.K. when it comes to couch potato ordering - Domino’s Pizza has been on Sky’s digital TV platform for the last several years (IIRC, since the beginning 7 years ago). And if you’d rather order your Domino’s Pizza from your laptop instead of your TV then just go to the Dominos Pizza website (http://www.dominos.co.uk/) which has also been running for years.

On the topic of pollies and tech, and Web 2.0.
The Australian Prime Minister had joined Twitter. http://twitter.com/KevinRuddPM
It would even appear that Kevin himself is putting up some post (I am
skeptical as ever), but some posts are signed off by what would appear
to be his media department.
What is even crazier, they have been replying to questions and
comments. I would NEVER have expected to see this used as a two way

I talk to one of the Phoenix mission managers today. I asked, “If by some mirical Phoenix powers back up after the winter would the mission continue?”
Apparently Phoenix cannot analyze any more soil. The equipment they use to test soil samples has exhausted. The camera and weather station may still work, but they would have to request more money from NASA to continue the mission. Then he told me they really don’t think phoenix will come back.
Why name it Phoenix if you’re going to let it die. Here’s keeping hope alive.

This is Daniel, tech support from Memphis. Just writing in reference to episode 852 where another Daniel asked "WHY THE HELL WOULD SOMEONE REGISTER HOBOBOOK.COM?" ..sigh. Thank you Tom and Molly for sharing my vision for the online hobo community! You have inspiring me to do something with one of the domains I've been sitting on for a while: Hoboforums.com. Why hoboforums? I honestly can't remember, BUT now I am glad I actually have something to do with this domain! If you are wondering, yes, the site is exactly what you think it is.

Google has joined the OpenID crowd, but just like Microsoft and Yahoo, you can't use the OpenID on Google, but you can use Google credentials other places. Unlike Microsoft and Yahoo though, Google has decided to tweak the OpenID implementation a little to make it better. That means that it's nonstandard and won't work for all standards-compliant OpenID servers. Bullies. We also admire the new DRM-free music store from clothing retailer, Hot Topic. Really.

Hi Buzz Crew,
I know you guys don’t like it and maybe you think its stupid but I will admit it: Google Goggles is a good thing. When I heard about it on your podcast I immediate activated it for my main Gmail account. I keep it on level one but I know sometimes when I am really drunk I can’t even do those simple calculations on my calculator that is right next to my computer.
So maybe people won’t admit it but I will. Sometimes I send out stupid (drunk) emails. (To bad this isn’t used on my phone too ![]()
You guys have always said that Google doesn’t do anything stupid (non-productive). Believe me people will use it, even if they don’t admit it.

In response to the caller's question on Episode 841 "What use is Google Earth"? - I work at an architecture firm in Dallas, TX, and we use Google Earth to place 3D models of client projects (created in Google SketchUp) into their actual location during the design process. This allows us to present our designs to our clients in a 3D format that they can manipulate from their own computers. This also has the added benefit of populating Google Earth with a few more 3D buildings for the people who just use it to look at stuff. There's my two cents - Love the show!

Hey, this sounds like a good idea! Create an artificial intelligence that's the incarnation of pure evil and immorality. You know, just to "study" it. It'll never get out. (Ugh.) So, that's happening today, along with Microsoft's announcement of its cloud OS, Azure; Chevy determines that hybrid SUVs won't make money no matter how you build them, and Wired tries to say the DMCA has been a good thing. Oh, and in addition to Oprah, Molly likes Martha.

Lee from Boston: Netbooks!
E-MAIL
A Netbook has to be priced below the excepted price of a “Cheap”
standard laptop (e.g., runs Vista and has a CD-ROM). Right now, that would be $800. (??)
It also needs to be small. Size should be comparable to the “ultra-mobile”. I.e., less than “12.
So, the market dictates the price, but the size it a fixed factor.
I made this up myself, so I’m pretty sure it’s right.

JaMoTo,,
I was appalled to come across this article today--just when I thought we were safe (for a while anyway) because the LHC had broken down,
it seems a bunch of “genius” scientists (naturally) decided it would be a good idea to develop an AI program that brings “personified evil to virtual life”--on purpose no less!! They’ve given it a name and a face, talk to it daily, and it’s programmed to answer questions based on the principle of carrying out premeditated acts that are immoral and harmful to others. By some twisted logic, this is supposed to help them research human morality.
http://io9.com/5069465/a-computer-program-that-is-pure-evil
WHAT ARE THESE PEOPLE THINKING!!! Could they have, at least, left out the premeditated part?? And what lunatic agreed to fund this project !!

I like the show Chuck on NBC. I hate the band Rush. I own a original Zune. I hate all things Apple. Last night, Morgan, Chuck’s buddy on the show, was asked by Chuck if the Buymart (Best Buy) had any Rush music for sale. Morgan exclaimed that he had rush on his Zune. Chuck acted perplexed by Morgan’s statement. Morgan quickly rehashed his statement, claiming that he really owned an iPod, not a Zune. At first I was giddy on the Zune statement, but I did laugh at Morgan’s rehash. P.S. the old Grand Dad (Bad Santa’s favorite) justifies my grammar. Been listening since about 720 .

As an FIOS customer, you can absolutely just get a splitter and run it to a TV. However, the TV must be able to receive QAM channels (which every new TV I’ve seen does). For those with older TVs, Verizon offers free Digital Converter boxes to be able to receive the Clear QAM channels on an analog television. With both ways, only basic channels are viewable. These are mostly the same channels available over the air and the channels I most watch anyway. If you want all the premium encrypted channels, your only options are to shell out the cash for a set top box or cable card.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find anything on the Netflix site that allowed anything but a PC.
