store on your mobile phone or (2) a URL printed inside the glove
compartment that you can enter on your phone to view the manual. The
latter would be better in general (because who remembers to download
the documentation *before* you have problems), but the former would be
better for areas with poor or no cell phone access, like the San
Francisco area.

A few episodes ago, you guys talked about wanted AM radio on the Zune HD, and I would agree. I was looking at the teardown of the Zune HD on iFixit, and noticed something interesting. In Step 8, they reveal that the Zune HD has a SiPORT HD Radio chip which just so happens to support AM radio. All Microsoft has to do is turn it on.

That means, a 32 bit system (application or OS) can address a maximum of 4 GB. To alleviate this limitation, Intel designed PAE (Physical Address Extension). Thus, this change alters the hardware addressing from 32 bit to 36 bit.

2^36 = 68,719,476,736 (64 GB)

Linux was the first to adopt PAE, as far as I knew. Then Windows added support for PAE, but only in Server versions of Windows. Home system versions are not supposed to support it even within the Vista line. As of SP1, though, Microsoft may have inadvertantly rolled out PAE into Vista allowing for addressing of up to 64GB of RAM.

Note, however, that even though Windows may support 64GB of RAM, the 32 bit applications themselves are limited to 4GB of operating space. So, for bigger games and memory intensive applications, PAE doesn’t address this 4GB application limit. So, even though the hardware can use 64GB of RAM and the operating system sees it, applications (including operating system apps) are limited to a maximum of 4GB per application in 32 bit version of an operating system.

I do not know of MacOS X 32 bit supports PAE.

Just thought I would share… Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is using Facebook, Twitter and is planning to use YouTube to communicate with the troops and the public, with a virtual town hall. As a military member I think it is good that he is trying to communicate with the junior officers and enlisted. I just wonder if he knows that YouTube is blocked on all Department of Defense computer networks.

In episode 1049 you talked about Microsoft Oneapp for dumb phones which will be available worldwide in 2010 (when these phones may not exist any more).

There is an application named SNAPTU that provide access to Facebook, twitter, flickr, picasa albums, RSS feeds, Weather, live scores, Google calender and some other stuff too and its cool.

its only like 500KB and it runs on mobile phones supporting Java (J2ME).

This will be my first “well actually” but as a mechanical engineer I
thought it worth pointing out that converting between units on a
complicated platform like the space shuttle is probably a bit more
complex than entering a few searches in google. Unfortunately, you
can’t just replace every 1/4″-20 x 1″ socket head cap screw with a
M6.35-1.27 x 25.4 screw. For one, the hardware doesn’t exist, and two,
the nomenclatures are different. You would actually have to reengineer
quite a bit to make a functioning system using only metric units.

It may be the bane of every freshman engineering student in the US,
but mixed units are the current reality.

This is a very interesting news story about the British top 40
singles, which has for many years only been based on record sales but
now they're thinking about including last.fm streams in their stats.
This is very good as it all those sites are really popular here.

What is more interesting is the stats halfway through the story about
single sales, that have gone up in the UK from 30 million in 2003 to
over 115 million in 2008. That is a fivefold increase. How dare the music
labels say they are losing money when this is the case. If anything
it shows that people are more interested than ever in music.

I was driving around town today, doing errands and listening to Buzz Out Loud. When I heard about Bozeman job services requesting applicants to provide username and passwords for social networking sites, I was totally in denial. Molly, Tom and Jason talking about Bozeman, MT? How could this be? Afterall, Bozeman is no Silicon Valley.

As a current resident of Bozeman, I am glad to hear about my town on BOL, but the story does not put Bozeman in the best possible light. Good thing that they rescinded this policy. Please make sure the Buzz town is aware of this and this can somehow clear Bozeman’s name a bit. Bozeman is a great little town (hmm, the smallest city I’ve ever lived in, but the fifth largest city in MT) with great nature resources all around it and hope you all have a chance to come and visit this area. It is beautiful out here!

When is episode 2000? Approximately Thursday, June 13th, 2013. [It's the second Thursday of June - gonna have to bump it back a bit]

So how’d I get that? First, I wrote a little script that would go through the months and count the number of weekdays for me. This gave me a nice estimate of how many BOLs there’d be. But it didn’t take into consideration the holidays. So I Googled a holiday list and came up with http://www.opm.gov/Operating_Status_Schedules/fedhol/2009.asp and added those to the spreadsheet, too. I had the spreadsheet do the math for me to remove them and then run a count for me.

I did the last bit by hand, knowing that the last episode of May 2013 would be #1991, I counted into 2000 by hand.

A few other notable or neat episode numbers:

hi there,

i’ve been a long time user of the cnet website and i practically live
off cnet tv. anyway so i decided to build myself a cnet toolbar
because i use cnet so much. basically its a series of shortcuts to the
different parts of the cnet website such as the different topics
(apple news, business news etc) and of course cnet tv. it also has a
google search added in. basically i used the google toolbar ever since
it was launched but this now allows me to remove that toolbar and
incorporate my searches and cnet together into a more… personal
toolbar.

anyway i thought why be greedy! haha… so if you guys are interested
you should check it out. its completely spyware free etc (there are
some other major networks that use the same company (espn toolbars etc)

I still have my Calculus textbook, filled with notes, formulas,
graphs, and corrections. And while having an electronic version of
the text would be nice for reference, I think an electronic version
inhibits the learning process. In my calc book, I have tons of little
notes filling in the gaps in examples the authors left out (”It is

favorite textbook phrases). I can’t imagine taking an organic
chemistry course without the ability to sketch compounds in the
margin. Technology is just not available to do these sort of things
easily and in a country that is behind in math and science education,
cheaper is not always better.

Besides, the cost savings are minimal. “Applied Chemistry – A
Textbook for Engineers and Technologists” costs 107.51 in hardcover on
amazon.com (random example). The kindle version costs 96.76. And I
can’t sell it at the end of the semester for pizza money. I can’t let
a friend borrow it. Or own it after amazon stops producing the kindle
and my kindle dies. Or I could get a version for my laptop,
encumbered with DRM that doesn’t work on my linux/mac or after the DRM
server is shutdown. Yup, that 10.75 I saved was well worth it. Open
textbooks are a possible solution (thinking about writing a statistics
for biologists one myself, after I get tenure) but “usable in the
classroom” quality and open is not always possible.

In episode 913, you talked about how Hulu content is no longer available on TV.com. Well, it apparently doesn’t end there because now Hulu is going to be removed from Boxee by the end of the week. Just when you thought that the media companies were FINALLY starting to embrace (using the term “embrace” loosely) the Internet as a new medium for content delivery, the content providers decide to pick up their ball and go home.

I bought an Apple TV in the first place with the specific intention of watching Hulu ON MY TV (thanks to a certain CNet video from Tom)! And while I know there are other ways I can get Hulu on my TV (a netbook comes in handy for this), there was no better or easier way to than using Boxee on an Apple TV. Heck, I even convinced a few of my friends to buy an Apple TV strictly on a demo of Hulu running on Boxee. I now feel bad for convincing them to get an Apple TV given that they won’t be able to get Hulu anymore.

As for the fate of my Apple TV, I’ll still use it to watch my handbraked movies (legally bought) and to watch my video podcasts (especially Loaded). However, it just doesn’t feel the same as before, similar to when that childhood friend moves to another state. Yeah, you say you’re going to write and keep it touch, but you never do…

The problem with most of the medical wiki’s is that people don’t do the full
research to properly diagnose their conditions (IMHO over 90% of medical
problems can be diagosed by a good history & physical without all the fancy
tests) and they come to snap decisions. This is especially important when,
like everyone, someone want’s to find a simple, benign diagnosis for their
and can miss subtle finding pointing to a more serious condition and
lifesaving treatments are delayed. I LOVE it when patients come into my
office informed and are able to ask appropriate questions but have a hard
time when they come in and quote the “Insert name of popular pulp magazine
here (name withheld to prevent litigation)” saying “But they said that
pressure on the chest isn’t heart disease but acid reflux so just give me my
antiacids and I don’t need an EKG”.

On Buzz-Out-Loud #859 Daniel in Hell e-mailed about the EULA for the iPhone which restricted the use of the phone for, “the development design manufacture or production of various kinds of weapons”. I believe that this is due to the fact that it contains a GPS unit, which could at least theoretically be used for a targeting or timing system. I would guess that this would be a standard EULA feature of other GPS devices, but maybe just the iPhone since it can run apps and would be easier to configure for the task. I guess the option of using the phone to record and replay a Molly rant is still an unrestricted pleasure. Love the show, keep up the good work.

Yesterday, I visited the Apple store and, to my dismay, saw the fourth generation Nano--back to the old shape, or a close approximation thereof. Now I’ll never get all my totally-don’t-need-them-but-so-much-guilty-fun gizmos and blinged-out cases! Am I the only one who feels this this way? Appreciators of the fat nano must unite!

So i have noticed over the past few weeks how often Molly talks about her love for Hulu. So I decided to give it a try. I was watching one of my favorite childhood shows Married with Children when I came upon a shocking realization. The original theme song for the show had been replaced with this crappy knock off tune. At first i thought it was something just for that season or episode, but when I watched other episodes they all had the altered theme song. So I was wondering if you guys knew if TV theme songs had copyrights that could expire? Or any other alternate explanation for the altered song. Thanks

I've been, err...conversing...with Comcast about the 250GB cap and after a few emails telling them how wrong they are to have a cap and not have any way to measure it, I got this interesting revelation from one of their customer support techs:

It's important to note our new threshold will not change our practice around excessive use. We will continue to call only the top users who consume the most data each month, which is usually well over 250GB, which is the same practice we've had in place for several years.

So, given that, it seems like they're not going to pull the plug on everyone who goes over 250GB, but only those they find to be the top (ab)users. I guess it's also important to keep in mind that this was just one support tech, probably just trying to get me off their back, but hey, it's an interesting development anyway.

After trying to use the Amazon music store and other DRM free stores without any luck since I reside on the other side of the pond I started thinking:

“What’s up with this ? They can’t get us DRM free music stores and decent none platform dependent streaming video services so they give us the bandwidth to pirate the whole shebang instead ?”

No seriously, I found a local alternative here in Sweden (and baltic countries) cdon.com, which since I last wisted them acutely have started with regular DRM free MP3:s instead of only the nasty WMA:s. Not everything but still, they have started!

But you can never guess what I found there, sure in WMA format but still, Kid Rocks "conceptual album" Rock N Roll Jesus, available for purchase, in single track format !! Not that I would even pirate his music but still, so much for "conceptual album".
