Hey Buzz crew,
As I was installing the new version of iTunes today (version 9.0), I saw something interesting. I had to accept a new EULA (which usually happens), but this time, they had a summary of the important changes over the actual legalese. This appears to be an easy way to get around the fight between a EULA that the lawyers want and one that we can understand. The only issue: you have to trust the company (in this case, Apple), that they are doing a fair job summarizing the changes.
Love the show!

hey buzzards!
you mentioned how 3D TV is being used to prevent piracy and how it
will eventually circumvented.
yes, that’s true… but it would still essentially eliminate the
distribution of cam and telesync copies of films still in theaters as
cammers wont be able to record films in this fashion. you wouldnt even
be able to film a 3D image with a 3D camera for obvious reasons
(unless it were some kind of crosseyed lens setup to somehow pinch the
alternating perspectives into a single image, a la “magic eye”
stereoscopic images. just kidding).
pirates wouldnt be able to release anything until a screener is able
to be ripped at the very least, therefore putting more reluctant
viewers into the theaters if they just cant wait for it.
just another point of view.
(obligatory) love the show!

Hey JaNaTo,
In regards to yesterday’s episode (918) about the flexible displays, I am excited about when this gets ruggedized and put on a quarterbacks arm. They could add plays on the fly wirelessly to his armband and also if they needed to draw up a play in the huddle, the quarterback could do so with the addition of touchscreen to it.

Anyhow just wanted to say ‘Thanks’ for bringing up “Spotify”. I went to check it out, great instant streaming music site. Funny thing though- I didn’t need an invite to join! I just looked up Spotify through Google and then clicked ‘join’ and signed up no problem.
Of course that could have been luck or maybe even that I’m on a mac, but I guess I should suggest trying it for yourself (or at least for those outside the US) and see how long this lasts!
Only downside to the service is that music is country specific. It varies what you can and cannot listen to depending where you live.
The “ads” are a joke, meaning they are just a small banner ad at the bottom of the player and randomly insert a 20 second spot to join their premium service. If this is their model and plan to keep sticking with it, I’m gonna use them from now on!
Cheers from Oxford, England!

Hey Buzzards,
I have nothing terribly relevant to say today, but I do have something
very important that I think we should remember. 18 years ago today,
Tim Berners-Lee released the first ever Web browser. We should all
remember this day as one of the most important days in the history of
computer science, and should all honour it as such.

I don't recommend running Xslimmer to cut down on the size of applications on OS X. While it does reduce the size of applications, it can potentially break the Automatic Update feature of OS X, as it is no longer able to properly identify the files that make up applications, and therefore doesn't know how to apply updates. If someone chooses to shrink their apps, they should download the full packaged versions of Apple's updates directly from their web site instead of using Automatic Update, something some users don't know how, or don't want to do.

Hey BOL,
I heard Tom mention the other day that he was going to talk about
Google Earth on CNET Live. I thought I would send along some Google
Earth goodness for JaMoTo the sea turtle. Hope it’s not too late! I’ve
posted some videos online here:
http://www.wildlifetracking.org/jamoto.shtml
This is an example of how marine biologists might use Googe Earth. The
time scrubbing features in particular are really nice for visualizing
how animals move relative to their environment and to each other.
I am also attaching a KML file of JaMoTo’s track for you guys to play
with in Google Earth. Feel free to use as you like and share with
Buzztown.
The last transmission we received from JaMoTo was on May 15th of 2008.
Her tag lasted about three months, which is a little below average for
our tracking program. This doesn’t mean that anything bad happened to
JaMoTo. More likely the tag fell off, was damaged, or there was a
technical problem. We have improved our attachment technique and are
tagging more turtles this year which you can see here:

Hey gaming research and brains, right up my alley!
There are a lot of data about sex differences in cognition, and empathy is among those differences. The brain areas mentioned are consistent with such results. Natali, sex hormones are one thing, brain chemistry is not just a function of those hormones. One should also keep in mind that a sex difference is not about individuals, but about groups. So you cannot say that Natali or Molly has more empathy than Tom or Jason, but you can (rather reliably) say that a random sample of women would have more empathy than a random sample of men. There is a big evolutionary explanation here, but that is another story.....
Don't get me started on confusing social constructionism and science....
Oh, BTW, I don't know if you can order mosquitoes online, but you can order fruit flies and rats. I have ordered rats on a number of occasions, and usually you buy 10 and get one free, seriously.
On and one more thinig, as a psychologist I can say clearly that Cooley has like no empathy...

To the Nearly Omniscient Leaders of the Buzz Army,
I heard your cries of suffering over the way Firefox skips over drop

bring you good news.
For some reason, Apple decided that the default behavior of OS X should
be to only set the focus on lists and text boxes when tabbing through a

behavior in the “Keyboard and Mouse” preference pane.

Anthony from Louisiana: Kindle in the Wild
I was listening to episode 846 where you mentioned about EA’s hilarious work around for the CD key and I am sad to say that I was one of the those who received only 19 of the 20 digits. I thought about calling EA to find out how to resolved this but I figured that it would take to long and opt to simply guess the last digit. They allowed 3 tries before requiring you to re-enter all the digits again. I believe you can eliminate zero and O just because they look too similar reducing the number of possibilites to 34. I finially found the last digit on my 33th tried when I skipped Y and typed in Z. Safe to say EA has been nothing but trouble. Just wanted to get my story out on EA’s key cracking idea.
Also on another topic, I have seen two Sony E-Readers in the wild within the period of two month on the NYC train system. I thought seeing one was rare but two is really something. Funny thing is that I bought my girlfriend a Kindle for Christmas a months ago so by the time Christmas comes along there will be another Kindle in the wild.

Ref episode 844 and previous discussions about Google Chrome
advertising.
I just returned from a trip to Taipei; and Google is most definitely
promoting Chrome over there.
Walking along one of the main streets, I happened upon a wall-sized
billboard looking like a giant browser window, complete with embedded
“flash video” player. see picture here -> http://flickr.com/photos/monody/3008198330/
I guess Google is not a dominant player in Taiwan, or indeed much of
Asia. So it only makes sense to employ different advertising tactics.

Don Reisinger joins the cast today for a rousing discussion that goes something like this: "Best Buy bought Napster." "Really?" "Yeah, I know, right? Weird." "Huh. Yeah. Wonder why they did that." "Dunno." It's a great show. You'll love it. (No, seriously! Don rants more than I do!)

New Buzz forces name is …
Greetings, JaMoTo + 1 guest
It’s worth mentioning that games without DRM can be successful, an example is “Sins of a Solar Empire”, a real time strategy game .. in SPAAACE…
The game sold over 500,000 copies, 100,000 via digital downloads. The game disc came with no DRM or copy protection.

Let’s hope EA learns Stardock (the publisher of Sins of a Solar Empire).
Best regards…

Hey JaMoTo! I just was wondering if Adam was willing to release Podcaster as a jailbroken application. I know that I personally have been dying for An application like this ever since I had to stop using mobilecast with the 2.0 update. I don’t really mind jailbreaking my phone, if it means incredibly useful applications like Podcaster or Intelliscreen, which Apple has apparently decided are not okay.

Buzzcrew + guest,
My prayers have been answered.
I am a field computer tech so I spend a lot of time traveling from customer to customer. There has been an occasion on two that I forget to sync up my iPhone before I leave for work. So I am left in my car without my newest BOL.
I though how great would it be to have an application that could download some of my favorite podcasts. I was excited when Alex S. had sent in an email about his podcaster, not so excited when I heard Apple rejected it. So I was searching through the free apps on the iTunes store and I noticed this application called FlyCast. I read the description and thought it sounded interesting. I downloaded it and installed it. When you launch the program it gives you several option: city guide, radio with 3G/Wi-Fi, radio on Edge, AccuRadio, and something called On-Demand Audio. I clicked the on demand and then clicked on Technology. Lo and behold, whats on TOP! Buzz Out Loud! It buffered for a while and then played. It was awesome. One cool feature is that it buffered a couple of minutes of audio in case of network problems. I wanted to pass this along to other listeners. Thanks for a great show!
Love the show,
Phillippe (computer tech from Iowa)
Hi Tom, Molly and Jason,
You have been talking a lot about Spore and how the DRM is terrible, so I thought I would bring this to your attention. According to TorrentFreak, Spore is the most pirated game ever, thanks to DRM! Here is a link to the full story, http://torrentfreak.com/spore-most-pirated-game-ever-thanks-to-drm-080913/
Love the show!

In today's show, Rafe joins us for a discussion of useless video blobs, the implications of, uh, Internet "shopping," the NPD numbers that read Tom's mind, and the U.S. Senate's "enormous gift" to Big Content (per Ars Technica). Also, we rouse the Buzz Militia from their stupor to launch an attack on Apple's arbitrary and annoying App Store approval process. Save Podcaster!

I had to install Real Player.
On yesterday’s show (807), you mentioned that TiVo should buy Sling. However, Sling is owned by Echostar (Dish Network), who has a dispute with TiVo over their DVR technology. A great idea would be for Dish to license TiVo’s DVR technology and TiVo to license Dish’s Sling technology.

Hey Buzz people,
That’s right, Apple has rejected my application because it duplicates the functionality of the desktop iTunes application. What!
Here is the e-mail they sent
“Since Podcaster assists in the distribution of podcasts, it duplicates the functionality of the Podcast section of iTunes.”
That just sucks. It really sucks. Maybe they should reject all calculator applications because they already have a calculator.
Anyway, just thought you would want to know as this is juicy news.
Keep up the good work.

Hey there all powerful buzz crew.
Just wanted to let ya’ll know that the analog signal is being used to display a message with the hot line.
I know this because I took a day trip to the beach and in the morning my portable TV worked but after lunch every station had that notice.
By the way I thought it was cool that the FCC paid fire departments $15 per converter they helped install, I think I read it in the WSJ, but do a live.com search to be certain .
Love the show.

typing from my phone so forgive the lack of proper CAPS. Episode 807 10 mins 16 seconds in, Tracfone will not deduct credits for text messages received if they are not opened. However, you can look in the in-box and read the first 50 characters as they scroll by in the preview. Love the show.

On 806 you were talking text msg fees and on 807, no calls or e-mails about US Cellular having free incoming text messages and calls. They did follow the crowd up to the $0.20 for outgoing messages, so they are not all goody goody. I didn’t e-mail or call because you I was sure someone would. Oh, and I love my BlackBerry and haven’t thought once about switching to that other phone, what was it called…
