No, no, fellow residents of southern Illinois, not tractor pulling--tracker pulling! The Pirate Bay has pulled out the trackers, but that doesn't mean you can't download anything. The site's still up for now using a different technology. Also, Google's book deal seems to have been changed, but not enough to satisfy its opponents. And Natali and I get into a philosophical argument.

How Google Voice forwards to Skype using Gizmo and no Skypein number is pretty easy. Once you set up your Gizmo account to work with your Google Voice account, you can then go to Gizmo, and by using the forwarding tab, you can enter a Skype ID which is the first option. Since this is a VOIP solution, I don’t even think funds are required such as forwarding to phone number.
I don’t see Gizmo or Google Voice killing this feature, but Skype may have a problem with it. However, in reality – I noticed that when it’s not a Skype – Skype communication, or if you are forwarding your Skype to a phone number, it seems to degrade the quality. Personally, I only use Skype for calls in the event that the cell phone doesn’t work, and use a SIP client for Gizmo based calls.
However, nonetheless, at least until Skype doesn’t like the fair competition, and may try to alienate users, this works just fine. A note of advise. While Google Voice accepts SMS from phone numbers, it doesn’t take Short Code numbers (such as Twitter’s 40404), so you couldn’t set your GV number to show in Skype’s CID info, so calls from Skype would still not show a number where you could be reached.
Hope this provides some enlightenment,
Frank

Our cable went out the other day so we had been waiting for HULU to put the latest episode of “V” online.
One thing we noticed while watching it was that it had the “WSB-TV Atlanta” logo branding in the lower left corner. Does everyone see this, or just people in the Atlanta area? Does this mean they have a HULU server in every market? We went to the abc website, and that branding was not there, just the plain abc logo branding.
I just thought this was odd.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yes. Snow Leopard reviews are out, and I have my favorite. But the more interesting story is Mozilla finding out that people didn't want to upgrade because they're afraid of the awesome bar exposing their porn. So they introduced private browsing mode fast. We also welcome Jon Strickland from HowStuffWorks to the show and he helps us understand how we can turn any story into an Apple story.

Ashwin from Redondo Beach has theory on Google Voice app
E-mail
2^32 = 4,294,967,296 (4 GB)
That means, a 32 bit system (application or OS) can address a maximum of 4 GB. To alleviate this limitation, Intel designed PAE (Physical Address Extension). Thus, this change alters the hardware addressing from 32 bit to 36 bit.
2^36 = 68,719,476,736 (64 GB)
Linux was the first to adopt PAE, as far as I knew. Then Windows added support for PAE, but only in Server versions of Windows. Home system versions are not supposed to support it even within the Vista line. As of SP1, though, Microsoft may have inadvertantly rolled out PAE into Vista allowing for addressing of up to 64GB of RAM.
Note, however, that even though Windows may support 64GB of RAM, the 32 bit applications themselves are limited to 4GB of operating space. So, for bigger games and memory intensive applications, PAE doesn’t address this 4GB application limit. So, even though the hardware can use 64GB of RAM and the operating system sees it, applications (including operating system apps) are limited to a maximum of 4GB per application in 32 bit version of an operating system.
I do not know of MacOS X 32 bit supports PAE.
Thanks.

Hi Buzz Crew,
Just thought I would share… Admiral Mike Mullen, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff is using Facebook, Twitter and is planning to use YouTube to communicate with the troops and the public, with a virtual town hall. As a military member I think it is good that he is trying to communicate with the junior officers and enlisted. I just wonder if he knows that YouTube is blocked on all Department of Defense computer networks.

its only like 500KB and it runs on mobile phones supporting Java (J2ME).

Buzz Crew,
I’m one of those very few users that have a smart phone (AT&T Tilt) without a data plan. I want the phone for other purposes that do not require the plan. I bought it used and I am not under contract. Is it your understanding that they will force ME to add a data plan, even though I’m not under contract?
By the way, within a few minutes of moving your SIM card to another phone, the AT&T website will change to show that your phone is the one into which you have installed the SIM card. My family has been “swapping” phones around a little bit lately and I was amazed at how fast they detected the change.
Love the show.

AT&T=blows (~20% less reliable than the other 2)

“Somewhat surprisingly, our testers also found that the “bars of service” readings on their phones were rarely an accurate predictor of the quality of the ensuing connection. Hi Buzz crew,
Just a quick e-mail on the subject of the Amazon referral scheme and the
impact of local tax legislation here in Hawaii.
When the legislation went through state and house, very few locals
seemed aware of it, then all of a sudden one of the members of a major
local tech community site here, TechHui, caught wind of it and alerted
everyone:
http://www.techhui.com/profiles/blogs/urgent-help-stop-hb1405-the?id=1702911%3ABlogPost%3A44364
From there numerous letters and petitions to house representatives and
Governor Lingle went out explaining the significant financial impact it
was liable to have on local business and citizens, along with TV and
radio interviews; no doubt, though, a number of residents here not
members of techhui were surprised to receive e-mails telling them their
referal income was suddenly being stopped by numerous websites, not just
Amazon.
Today it was announced that Governor Lingle has decided to Veto the bill
(HB1405), amongst others:
http://www.hawaiisenatemajority.com/wp-content/upLoads/2009/06/govs-veto-list.pdf
That was one significant hurdle, now all that’s left is to persuade the
House not to override her veto. It’s an amazing tribute to what local
communities can do if they collaborate and put the pressure on.
Paul, the Brit in Hawaii.

Two things..
I don't see any risk of microbes from earth infecting another local planet, since any microbes already on the planet are well adapted to local conditions and our microbes would be wimps in comparison.
Likewise microbes from space is not a real concern...do you have ANY idea about how many different microbes/viruses are already on this planet (check out Bergey's manual for a list of sorts..it is the bible of microbiology). The competition on this planet is extreme..
Have you not heard of Darwin?
From: Bob..Your tame microbiologist.
Your discussion about NASA was very interesting....it seems to support the concepts I've outlined at http://www.h2liftship.com , which has had no response to speak of since I put it up...such is the risk of being way forward thinking..
Thanks,
Bob Freeman

Hey there buzz crew

It is my first time writing to you guys.
Regarding the whole debate over the caps lock key, how about adapting
the “double tap” of the shift key like the iphone/ipod touch to
regular keyboards. I too accidentally hit the damned caps lock key on
my macbook and just wish that they would get rid of it.
On other topics (just to fuel your anger towards your telecom
companies), we Indians only have to pay 1 paisa (the “cent” of Rupees)
for sending an SMS, and nothing for receiving. If you take the current
exchange rates, that would be just 0.00021 U.S. cents. Enjoy!
Oh by the way, we converted to the Metric system in 1954 and just last
year have also planted our Flag on the moon. You can ask ISRO (Indian
Space Research Organization) to help you convert NASA’s Imperial
measurements.

The discussion of metric is interesting to me as we changed over here in Canada when I was in grade 4 or so. Now, what happened to those of us in this generation is that we know an odd mish mash of units. Temperatures outside, well that is in Celsius, but when I cook I use Imperial measures, including temperature. The temperature of my parents' pool, I still do that in F. Distances and speeds while driving, km and km/h are fine, distances to object, metres are great, but when I measure to say repair something in the house, I use inches. Oh and I am 6 foot 1 inch tall, and weigh about 175 lb, I have no idea what my height or weight is in metric. (I could convert of course, but I don't).
I am just confused.... My 15 year old daughter on the other hand, does everything in metric, no problem.

Hello Gang
If you ever get to Japan there is absolutely no way to avoid seeing clothes drying outside.
I travel by train, car, bike and on foot.
If Google lowers the camera, I believe I saw a Google van near my work place, it really won’t matter.
If you walk down the street near any apartment complex, they call them mansions here, or house YOU WILL SEE UNDIES!!!!. 20+ storied dwellings and they have clothes flying to the four corners.
You may also see the great sport of government officials stealing them for their fetishes.
Yes my UA Boxers are flapping out there among the throng.

Regarding your story on how you can develop an inner compass – I went to college in Idaho and it was pretty much common knowledge that anyone who had grown up in Idaho had an internal compass. They always know where north is, even in a closed room. The reason for this is most of the towns in Idaho are set up in grid system so that to get around you constantly have to think about where north is. Having grown up in California, I still struggle with directions that reference north & etc. and find it frustrating how much people in Idaho (& other grid-based cities) assume that it is obvious.
Maybe since Jason is from Boise he also has experienced this?
Love the show!

Short and sweet, our latest OC ReMix is really, really cool if you like games OR beer!
Swedish ReMixer & game composer Mattias Holmgren remixed the classic Legend of Zelda Nintendo theme using nothing but a Heineken beer bottle! If that wasn't weird enough, they also warn you not to buy an iPhone or Palm Pre, which is probably standing orders at Microsoft. Also Natali carries knives in her sports bra quite often. I commute to and from work daily, but, thanks to a World of Warcraft
addiction, a Netflix account, Hulu and my PS3, I never ever leave the
house. I have a phone at home, and a phone at work.
BUT, I live out in the country, and I occasionally worry about getting
stranded in the desert. So I have, for the last few years, used
Alltel’s per-day pay as you go cell plan.

Hey guys,
about the assasin phone plan.. this plan would work great with Google
Voice. So, using Molly’s example, you would pick up the calls using
your work phone during the week, but you would use your personal
phones during the weekends and all people have to is to call you on
your google voice number. This way you don’t have to worry about
people not being able to reach you because you didn’t pay for that
particular day.

I’m just naming your group something random since I don’t want to think too hard about the the current group nickname. (Lay off, I’m working.) Just wanted to bring up a little point regarding the retention rates of Twitter. According to other reports on this study, the study only covered the use of Twitter on the main twitter web page. Do not forget that Twitter is used via MANY third party applications such TweetDeck, Twhirl, Tweetie, TwitterFon, Twitterrific, Twinkle, and Twapple.
Okay, I made that last one up, but still, I would argue that the large majority of people using Twitter do not access it through the main webpage. Discuss.
Love the show.

Dear Buzz people,
I’m sure you’ve heard about the Pirate Bay trial’s judge and his alleged ties to the recording industry, but I wonder if you’ve heard about this and what you think of it: http://www.thepirategoogle.com/
Not only is the idea very amusing, but its simplicity illustrates something that we tech fiends have known for a while: Google is sort of a Pirate Bay too.
Which makes it easier to ask the question: “Would the RIAA ever take on Google and ask them to filter the Internet?”
(It does seem like too big an idiocy to even formulate, but maybe we shouldn’t underestimate the ability of the copyright lobby to shoot themselves in the foot. Indeed, if too many torrent sites started closing, new tools far more sophisticated than this one would surface in a matter of weeks. What would the copyrights holders say then? It’s probably too big a deal for anyone to have a chance of wining, even the copyright lobbies. The Pirate Bay is a bunch of kids in Sweden, but Google is a whole different animal. Still, I’m not certain they would understand that.)
So let’s review: FTP turned into centralized p2p, which turned into decentralized p2p, which became individual file p2p. Each time, pressure from the RIAA pushed the system to bury itself deeper into the fabric of the Internet. Could it be that they have finally pushed it so far that they cannot do anything about it anymore?

Hi buzzers,
This old BluRay is useless and dead as a video distribution argument because of streaming is so tired and so wrong. This sounds like the argument that on deamand from the cable company is supposed to kill of DVDs. Yea, that happend. So the idea of ownership of phisical media is going to die, right? Yea and we’re going to be flying in hibrid air cars and wearing auto sizing sneakers and jackets. I have a really nice plasma tv, and BD is so much better, and no dvd is not good enough. The entire sentiment of good enough is anti progress and your podcast should be above that. And Tom’s argument that he doesnt have a PS3 because it is too expensive, is so lame. He has every single player box, worth a lot more than a PS3. He buys more tech than me, and thats saying something, so dont give me the too expensive crap.
Love the show

Hey Tom, Natali, Jason, random(GuestHost),
I am one of those individuals that does not yet have access to
Google ‘Me’. Based on your discussion of the offering yesterday, I have
a question: what is to stop a malicious person from potentially creating
false profiles for individuals, filled with less-than-genuine
information. It seems like I could create a false Google account under
the name ‘Tom Merritt’, then write all sorts of bad stuff about Tom,
which result in people thinking he’s a jerk or something (not that I’m
going to do that), and how then, would the real Tom Merritt combat this
doppelganger?
Sincerely,
Chris the Bioinformatician from Calgary
P.S. I realize that the above scenario can be played out on other social
networks as well, but somehow having this information popping up in
Google seems like the kind of place where authenticity would be more
important than say, Facebook.
One of our listeners is upset that Pizza Hut is hiring interns to Twitter for them. We try to show the difference between astroturfing on blogs and hiring someone to Twitter legitimately. We also decide that when GREP is outlawed, only criminals will GREP. And Blu-ray's getting cheap. But do we care?

I saw MED-V demoed at VMWorld last year. If it was the only software visualization I had seen there, I would definitely have been impressed. The problem is that MED-V relyes on an entire virtualized windows OS, so it adds overhead to the system. It also adds complexity, if something goes wrong you now have to troubleshoot both layers.
Another piece of software being shown off was from VMWare. VMWare purchased a little company that made the software Thinstall, and renamed their product ThinApp. The software (and whole concept) is mind blowing! Thinstall allows you to encapsulate an entire software pacakge into a single .exe file that can be run from any computer without any install. It also encapsulates all windows components that are needed. This means that you can run Windows 95 software on XP, Vista, or any other windows operating system. The application becomes portable and flexible. It is licenced toward corporations and isn’t cheap. Hopfully one day there will be an open source project for the same thing. When this tech becomes wide spread, it really will change EVERYTHING.
Also check out InstallFree. It uses the same tech as ThinApp, but adds a layer of IT managment and is even more game changing for IT administration.

Study Finds Pirates Buy 10x More Music Online than Non-Pirates
http://i.gizmodo.com/5219587/study-finds-pirates-buy-10x-more-music-online-than-non+pirates
If you can preview/borrow/steal, I bet you’ll be more likely to buy in
both the short run (aka the song or that album) and the long run
(aka look out for the band’s next album or spend crazy loot to go to a
show and buy their crappy merch)…
I think this totally makes sense, and I think this study hints that the
new business model has already been developed (without the stinky music
industry and its army of litigious minions) and is working: “sometimes
when you give a little, you get a lot” (and when I say “a little”, I
don’t mean a 14kbps, 15-second clip); aka the spoiled brat that doesn’t
share his toys has no friends growing up- Waaa!
Also, pretty please don’t debate validity of study! –> W-A side note:
Last week, there was an arguement about study size. There isn’t a finite
number. Dont forget, there’s POWER in numbers:
