Hey gang,
On episode 1130, the gang discussed justin.tv adding a pay-per-view model on livestreams and receive a negative response. I used to follow justin.tv ’s Twitter stream and they were constantly promoting live artists that were streaming concerts. Examples include: John Mayer, Lady Gaga, Snoop Dogg, and many more. I remove the list after constantly getting ping to see Cincinnati receiver Chad Johnson’s livestream. I can see this as a great way for artists to receive compensation to show live concerts online but the real question is will people pay for this? We shall see.

Hey BOL,
Public key cryptography is a good idea but I have a feeling that the
movie studios don’t trust the theaters and thus wouldn’t want them to
be able to play the movie until it is supposed to be released. With
regular encryption the movie studios can send along the movie before
it is released and don’t have to worry about the theaters being able
to play the movie until the key is sent to them at the time the movie
is released.

On today's Buzz Out Loud, Natali and Molly form a new Amazonian society in advance of the development of artificial sperm. But in much more important news, Google is finally building the thin-client, Netbook-friendly operating system that Molly predicted back in 2005. And poor Yahoo is stuck in 2005: it just announced Search Pad. Aw. Poor Yahoo.

During your discussion of Google Chrome OS today, I am curious as to what impact, if any, GCOS might also have on older PCs. Since GCOS is already targeted at low-powered Netbooks, it stands to reason GCOS might also breathe some extra life into that 5-year-old laptop you were thinking of ditching. By moving a lot of the processing power from your lap to the cloud, could an unintended consequence be a reprieve on hardware's life cycle? Certainly Google wouldn't complain.

Ok, this makes the second time Natali has mentioned dropping Fios. However, what she has not mentioned is why she dropped it. As someone who is waiting for Fios to make it to my area (Internet only), I’m curious if Natali could provide me with a reason I should stick with Comcast.
Currently, I’m using Comcast for internet and uber basic cable. I would have gotten just internet, but the package with basic cable was cheaper. Go figure. Also, I’m using vonage for my phone service. And while I’m at it, after looking at Google Voice, I must say most, if not all those features are available through Vonage, and with that I get a quasi landline.

"Russian scientists discovered that simple Scotch tape emits x-rays when peeled off glass. New research conducted by colleagues at UCLA has determined that the power that the tape generates is much higher than anyone could have imagined. In fact, they have constructed a machine that generates x-rays by peeling up Scotch tape in a vacuum at the rate of 3 centimeters per second. As you can see in the recent demo they did for the journal Nature, their device was able to successfully generate an x-ray of a finger."
When asked to comment on the safety aspect of scotch tape, the scientist responded with, "I will continue to use Scotch tape during my daily life, and I think it’s safe to do it in your office. No guarantees.”
Haha. Awesome. Youtube video proof at gizmodo too...

I thought I would never get a topic on BOL that I could actually write into the show with some intelligence about. Regarding Episode 830 and 835 and the “dirty” environment that the MacBook is made in.
Several issues here from Brian Cooley’s rant, first, about the paint on the machines chipped off? Big chunks of metal moving around and you expect paint to stick to the equipment? Paint is not a maintenance issue, paint is cosmetic. Even if the paint would hold up to the constant hammering of thousands of pounds of aluminum banging against it daily, it also would have to hold up to the constant coolant spray. I am surprised there was ANY paint left.
Second, to his claim of seeing cleaner plants, especially Japanese automotive plants. I have been to American automotive plants, and I have been to Japanese plants in Japan. In any country, in any industry, what they show you on a ‘tour’ is what they want you to see. A clean pretty shop assembling pristine parts on a white floor. They will never show you the compressor room, the stamping plant, or anything dirty, loud, and greasy. They know what perception means. Even silicone wafer plants have a big tank of oil somewhere with a whole bunch of greasy equipment, even if you never see it.
Thanks,
Mike the Lubricant Guy

So the other day I was walking through my local Target, and there sitting at the end of the aisle was a display of the Sony E-readers. OK so it wasn’t one owned by somebody but they had a freaking E-Reader on display at Target. So I stood there and played with it. My mom was just staring at me from across the aisle, thinking how strange I was for thinking this device was so rare and cool. I tried to explain to her what it was but she didn’t get the point. Oh well I guess only true geeks can understand the awesomeness of an E-Reader.

Hi guys,
I’m catching up on last week’s episodes, and have been thinking about
this first sale doctrine mentioned re: Spore last week. Just to be
clear, I think the Spore DRM is lame… but in this day of digital
media, isn’t first sale outdated?
You can sell a CD you buy at the record store, but can't you sell music
bought online? Do you think someone would buy am unDRMed MP3 from the
Amazon store from you? In fact, are you even allowed to resell unDRMed
MP3 files?
How about iTunes purchased content--for example, movies or TV show
seasons? These actually are valuable.

This topic may have been shared already, and it may not really be like Google’s carrier-less concept, but here in Southeast Asia, especially here in mobile savvy Philippines, a lot of local hackers offer dual-sim capabilities. In the days of Nokia 3310 (remember Space Impact or Picture Editor?!), buyers can opt for a modified back-plate cover that encases two sim slots that connect to the main sim slot, so your phone uses two carriers. Switching between carriers is seamless, but I’m not sure the extent of it’s capability, as I have not tried it.
We also have this phone called My Phone (check it at http://www.myphone.com.ph) that houses built in dual-sim slots and has advanced smartphone features to boot (albeit no Space Impact OR Picture Editor). Well, that’s it, what do you think?
Long time listener, great show!

Remember the Netflix (NFLX) outage last week? Oddly enough it correlated with VMWare (VMW)'s issues with VMWare server ( http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=324544&intsrc=news_ts_head ). VMWare ESX Server, a utility used for server redundancy, and consolidation had issues Monday booting up due to anti-piracy, DRM technology. It affected all customers who had their clocks set correctly. Oddly enough, NFLX's problems started up on Monday too. I know in a large corporation it is difficult to roll out new versions of software, and in someone the size of NFLX's case it could take several days. Just Correlation? Causation? Maybe. Sargun

Hi, I just discovered We7, a site that offers free ad-supported music downloads without any form of DRM. But that's not even the awesome part. Usually, people from small countries such as Belgium can't use these services because the record companies don't bother striking deals with them for such a tiny audience. It's not like that with We7. On August 14th, a staff member posted a message about the fact that Warner Music will join the download service "before the end of October". I'm definitely looking forward to that. - http://blogs.we7.com/weblog/2008/08/warner-music-uk-partners-with-we7.html Love the show! Pieter De Decker
Greetings Buzz Crew, I had the chance to actually see what Jason and Tom looked like in-person while I was roaming the floor at NME. In the open to episode 789, Tom said Las Vegas was in California. Now, I know there were a lot of California license plates in the area which might have been confusing. The parking garage at the Las Vegas Hilton was a prime example of that although I do wonder who has the California plate "PODKAST" that we saw. As a local, though, I can say that Las Vegas is not in California but is the population center of the state of Nevada. Clark County (where Henderson, Las Vegas, Boulder City, Laughlin, and more are found) is the most populous in the state. Was Tom looking at that cranky GPS Leo Laporte's tech crew were using when hauling the tricaster that sent them in a circle at one point? Thank you for the great work you do. My father had a great time finally putting faces to the voices he hears when I am listening to various podcasts. Didn't quite expect Tom and Jason to be so frakking tall, though. See ya next confab! Love the show. Stephen
