I'm very pleased that LegalTorrents.com has come along to prove that I'm not crazy when I say there are plenty of legal reasons to use torrents. And they even have a torrent of Bible 2.0. Probably with new commandments from the MPAA. We also chat about AMD and Intel making nice, and how long that might last. And Microsoft tries to patent sudo. Yes, they said, "Sudo grant me a patent," I'm sure.

Hi buzz-crew.
Regarding the EU cookie law. How do Local Shared Objects
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_Shared_Object) fit in to the
equation?
Will LSOs have to be approved by the user as well? If not, then all
sites will just store all data in LSOs instead and those are even
harder to get rid of.
To delete LSOs you have to go to the right folder on your computer and
delete the files manually or you have to go to Adobe’s control
panel-site and delete them there. On the control panel-site you can
also choose if sites should be able to store data on your computer or
not, BUT if you block storage some sites will not work (ustream is one
example).
If you’re using Firefox there is an extension called BetterPrivacy
which gives you better control over LSOs.

Buzz Crew,
Isn't anyone a little worried about what Google is doing with all this information they are collecting? Maybe they are developing all these free products just to gather as much information as they can?
Example:
I am at work, get a Gmail from my boss saying I need to finish a report (and we use Google Docs of course because it's free). My wife calls my Google Voice number and says we need toothpaste. I leave work to go to the gym, and decide to watch a popular YouTube video while on the bike. A 15 second Crest commercial happens to pop up, but I skip it. I usually take the long way back to work (of course Latitude knows this).
Then my Droid tells me, "You better pick up some Crest on the way back to work and take the shorter route since you will pass a drugstore. And you better hurry since you are only half done with the report!"
And of course due to some error all this ends up searchable on Google.

Hi BOL folks,
The reference to the 5gb limit on data is in the fine print from the PDA/Smartphone email plan (which I have for my Droid).
It says:
The Data Plans and Features MAY NOT be used for any other purpose. Examples of prohibited uses include, without limitation, the following: (i) continuous uploading, downloading or streaming of audio or video programming or games; (ii) server devices or host computer applications, including, but not limited to, Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, automated machine-to-machine connections or peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing; or (iii) as a substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections. This means, by way of example only, that checking email, surfing the Internet, downloading legally acquired songs, and/or visiting corporate intranets is permitted, but downloading movies using P2P file sharing services and/or redirecting television signals for viewing on laptops is prohibited. A person engaged in prohibited uses, continuously for one hour, could typically use 100 to 200 MBs, or, if engaged in prohibited uses for 10 hours a day, 7 days a week, could use more than 5 GBs in a month.
For individual use only and not for resale. We reserve the right to protect our network from harm, which may impact legitimate data flows. We reserve the right to limit throughput or amount of data transferred, and to deny or terminate service, without notice, to anyone we believe is using an Data Plan or Feature in any manner prohibited above or whose usage adversely impacts our network or service levels. Anyone using more than 5 GB per line in a given month is presumed to be using the service in a manner prohibited above, and we reserve the right to immediately terminate the service of any such person without notice. We also reserve the right to terminate service upon expiration of Customer Agreement term.
Hope this helps.

Hey Buzz Crew,
You’ve been getting me excited about the Nook, with its ability to loan a book out to a friend for up to two weeks. But I just heard that not only won’t you have this option for all publishers (which you may have mentioned), but even when a publisher supports it, you can only loan a book ONCE. So if I loan you a book and you’re too busy to even start it, I can’t loan it to you again, and nobody else can benefit from me loaning it out either. Thanks for wasting my ability to loan out that book!

So three guesses where I went today. I’ll give you a hint it rhymes with the Ficrosoft Smore. Yes, the wait is over and I’m happy to announce (although a I’m tiny bit bitter) that the Microsoft Store is in fact a success. First of all the place is HUGE and loaded with all
the best Microsoft using hardware (and no doubt the most expensive).
In the store there are plenty of Zunes and sleek laptops, but the things that seemed to really seemed to put the asses in the seats were the gigantic touched screened computers, Xbox 360 games as well as some surface like gaming tables. Now this store does look a lot like an Apple store and it would have been nice to see some originality but all in all I have to say that Microsoft did this right. Although I have yet to have seen the new Apple store that is under construction as of now. All I know it that It has swallowed the store next to it and is now twice as big as before. So needless to say I’m freaking out over what’s behind that big black box inclosing it and so are the people judging by how many of them were trying to sneak peaks through the crack in between the doors
Apple better come back with something FREAKING AWESOME to top this new store.

Hey guys,
love the show, with Tom’s virtualization (show 1051) idea, there are a few fantastic products like Citrix XenApp and XenDesktop. With XenDesktop you get a whole virtual desktop deliver to your computer which can either run using the power of your computer or of the servers and means you can run pretty much any OS on your laptop but for company work use their virtual access, you can even access the desktop through the web so you could use a netbook
.
At my current company we heavily use virtualization like this because everyone uses different operating systems but all the companies core apps are windows based, as I am writing this to you I am in the Outback of Australia using my companies internal applications through my web browser running on my Mac.
Cheers,

Hello Buzz Crew,
I'm not sure if this is of interest to anyone, but did you know that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is allowed to seize your laptop or other electronic device without cause when you enter the US?
This applies to everyone, US Citizens and foreign nationals. The rules were recently updated, partially under pressure from a recent ALCU lawsuit, but the ALCU wants further changes. Under the revised rules, CBP and ICE are also allowed to keep your laptop for up to 30 days to perform the search. The ACLU asserts that the rules are still too broad and have the potential for abuse.
While the occurrence of this happening appears to be quite uncommon, is does happen. The CBP reported they only did about 1,000 laptop searches during a 10 month period, and only 46 were in-depth searches. The CDP processed 221 million passengers during that same time frame. Rare as it may be, I certainly would not want to be on of the travelers who were subjected to this search and seizure of their laptop. The thing that really bothers me is they are allowed to do this without cause.
Quoting the PC world article linked below:
"CBP has asserted that it can search all files, including financial documents and Web browsing history, on travelers’ laptops and electronic devices “absent individualized suspicion.” The agency does need probable cause that a crime has been committed to seize a device."
I guess all of this is something to think about when deciding if you should take your laptop, smart phone, or any other electronic device on your next overseas trip.

2^32 = 4,294,967,296 (4 GB)
That means, a 32 bit system (application or OS) can address a maximum of 4 GB. To alleviate this limitation, Intel designed PAE (Physical Address Extension). Thus, this change alters the hardware addressing from 32 bit to 36 bit.
2^36 = 68,719,476,736 (64 GB)
Linux was the first to adopt PAE, as far as I knew. Then Windows added support for PAE, but only in Server versions of Windows. Home system versions are not supposed to support it even within the Vista line. As of SP1, though, Microsoft may have inadvertantly rolled out PAE into Vista allowing for addressing of up to 64GB of RAM.
Note, however, that even though Windows may support 64GB of RAM, the 32 bit applications themselves are limited to 4GB of operating space. So, for bigger games and memory intensive applications, PAE doesn’t address this 4GB application limit. So, even though the hardware can use 64GB of RAM and the operating system sees it, applications (including operating system apps) are limited to a maximum of 4GB per application in 32 bit version of an operating system.
I do not know of MacOS X 32 bit supports PAE.
Thanks.

Hey Tom,
In episode 1049 you mentioned that Sony was pushing ePub as a standard
but no one else is using it.
That is true — kind of — but for once Sony is not pushing its own
standard. (Funny what being second place in the market will do!)
ePub is actually the industry standard backed by all the publishers
and readers’ advocacy groups.
It is free and open.
It was created to be the mp3 of ebooks but it was created by a
consortium of publishers so naturally they standardized two flavours:
one that allows DRM and one without.
Sony is using the DRM version. That sucks but at least they switched
to 3rd party (Adobe) authentication servers.
Theoretically at least that means Sony-device owners are not locked
into the Sony universe and can buy from other epub-compliant stores or
small publishers who sell direct.
Publishers and book people are quietly applauding Sony’s epUB move.
The DRM decision blows but publishers want to publish, track, and
manage only one file with one ISBN.
And it goes without saying that ending the eBabel for formats is great
for everybody.
As for the other players…
B&N bought Fictionwise so their catalog is in the Fictionwise
proprietary format that predates ePub.
Indigo’s book service — Shortcovers — is all cloud based. Look ma no
format.
And it is Amazon that is trying to be the Kingmaker with their
proprietary .mobi standard.
Publishers hate that Bezos is taking this approach. It is an inferior
format.
Dotmobi files won’t support things like monospace fonts (important in
publishing computer books).
And Bezos bought the company that makes Stanza — one of the first
and biggest all-ePub shops — and put their efforts on ice.
Love the show.

Hey Buzz Crew,
Of the airplanes that have their own Weather Radar; it is usually
located in the nose of the aircraft and only covers about 160 degrees of

behind them. So while you taxi to the runway and wait in line if you
are not pointed in your departure direction you are out of luck.

Hi,
I am a day behind so I just listened to the 1046 episode. You received an e-mail that says that the IEEE membership is $15 I guess USD. As a former IEEE member I know you may be charged from $138 USD to $175 USD as a full member depending on the region of the world you live. As a student you get charged from $27 to $32 for one year and half of that for half a year. Also I searched the IEEE site and the only information I could find was that you can get MS software if you are a student member of the IEEE Computer Society.
http://www.ieee.org/web/membership/Cost/dues.html
From the IEEE Site:
IEEE Student membership is open to undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled in at least 50% of a normal, full-time course of study in an IEEE designated field.
That is why I didn’t renew my membership, I could afford to spend the $138 USD for the 2009 year. Maybe in 2010.
Love the show.

Slmgr.vbs -rearm is typically used when building machines in a lab
environment. Typically you use it when you rebuild the machines in your
lab.
Also, if you use volume licensing (ie Microsoft KMS and your KMS server
isn’t updated to support Windows 7 yet) you might need to extend your
expiration date until your KMS admin updates the KMS server’s Volume

The reason the Russians, China and the EU developed or are developing their own Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) is because they don't want to rely only on the US military for positioning data. Should the US decide, they could scramble the signal tomorrow and then accuracies would go from 1 meter to 100 meters (Selective Availability). As to why would anyone need more than one: at any given time the most GPS only satellites you will see at any given time is 12 and that many is rare. Compare that to the 18 satellites that I was tracking yesterday morning when combining the GPS and Glonass constellations. And when Galileo comes online, that number will increase to an average of 24 satellites at a time for multi-constellation capable receivers. All these satellites won't be that beneficial to in-car nav units, but high precision centimeter grade accuracy units used in Land Surveying, Construction, Agriculture and Aeronautical applications will be greatly enhanced. More is better.
Take care,

Buzz!
You were half right Tom-
Ricky Gervais switched from Podcast to “Audiobooks” that are about an hour long (and Hi-Lar-i-ous) each. He’s actually tried a few different models including “free for a while” where if you downloaded the podcast with in the first week or two you’d have it for free, but if you wanted it from the back catalog it’s a couple of bucks. Seems pretty fair in the sense that you did have a chance at getting it for free at one point.
The current Audiobooks come out once a month and are $2 each and I buy everyone one based on how great the previous podcasts are. They seemed to be selling well because I tend to see it at the top of the Audiobooks list in Itunes.
And, again, I highly suggest them.
Sorry I haven’t had much to say lately, I’ll work on that. Also, won’t be in Cali for 1000-but I’ll be listening!
Later,
Frank L.

Hey Buzzcrew,
Not to drag this out longer than needed, but Tom should be able to name another successful (at least last I heard) paid podcast as he and his wife have been guests: Mac OS Ken Day 6. Additionally, this is an example of something going paid when it was free because it is only marginally more Apple-centric than Ken Ray’s previous radio show/free podcast Technocracy Radio. As you said, paid works alongside free as long as there is a value-add.
What I am more interested in is how successful the public-radio model works for podcasts and other new media. I know Leo Laporte gets a lot of funding from donations, but he also has more advertisers than anyone else in new media. People like Dan Carlin (Hardcore History, Common Sense) might offer a better gauge for the success of donations. I know BOL analysis specials/interviews are rare, but someone needs to do an in-depth on the state of new media.
-Brian in Fort Worth
P.S. Decided to reread Tom’s book Boiling Point — Not a good idea in a recession, especially while living in Texas when the governor talks about seceding in public remarks (see Tax-Day Tea Parties). For those unfamiliar, he just said that current spending policies will cause high taxes and could make some people want to secede.
According to the Office 10 Twitter account, Zune lovers will be happy in June. If that wasn't weird enough, they also warn you not to buy an iPhone or Palm Pre, which is probably standing orders at Microsoft. Also Natali carries knives in her sports bra quite often. Or so we have come to understand.

Hey guys,
about the assasin phone plan.. this plan would work great with Google
Voice. So, using Molly’s example, you would pick up the calls using
your work phone during the week, but you would use your personal
phones during the weekends and all people have to is to call you on
your google voice number. This way you don’t have to worry about
people not being able to reach you because you didn’t pay for that
particular day.

Hey Sheba
I’m just naming your group something random since I don’t want to think too hard about the the current group nickname. (Lay off, I’m working.) Just wanted to bring up a little point regarding the retention rates of Twitter. According to other reports on this study, the study only covered the use of Twitter on the main twitter web page. Do not forget that Twitter is used via MANY third party applications such TweetDeck, Twhirl, Tweetie, TwitterFon, Twitterrific, Twinkle, and Twapple.
Okay, I made that last one up, but still, I would argue that the large majority of people using Twitter do not access it through the main webpage. Discuss.
Love the show.

Molly,
In previous shows you talked about how all of the wires from wall mounted TVs and home theater components would negate the benefit of wall-mounting them. Check out this Switched.com article about flat HDMI cables that you can put on the wall and paint over. I think flat paintable speaker cables have been around for a decade or so. Now all we need are flat power cables that can carry more than 1kW of power and we’ll be set.

Hey guys. I just had a quick one. I am creating some policy rules in a device and have to use a web form to do it, and I am wondering something. Why the hell does Firefox on the Mac skip over drop down list boxes? I figured since Molly ranted so much about the Flash bug in FF, she’s want this one. As far as I know it has been this way for ever, and Safari doesn’t do it.

My argument still stands: that would still be a hilarious lawsuit. For
