Hey Buzz crew,
As I was installing the new version of iTunes today (version 9.0), I saw something interesting. I had to accept a new EULA (which usually happens), but this time, they had a summary of the important changes over the actual legalese. This appears to be an easy way to get around the fight between a EULA that the lawyers want and one that we can understand. The only issue: you have to trust the company (in this case, Apple), that they are doing a fair job summarizing the changes.
Love the show!

hey buzzards!
you mentioned how 3D TV is being used to prevent piracy and how it
will eventually circumvented.
yes, that’s true… but it would still essentially eliminate the
distribution of cam and telesync copies of films still in theaters as
cammers wont be able to record films in this fashion. you wouldnt even
be able to film a 3D image with a 3D camera for obvious reasons
(unless it were some kind of crosseyed lens setup to somehow pinch the
alternating perspectives into a single image, a la “magic eye”
stereoscopic images. just kidding).
pirates wouldnt be able to release anything until a screener is able
to be ripped at the very least, therefore putting more reluctant
viewers into the theaters if they just cant wait for it.
just another point of view.
(obligatory) love the show!

I was thinking (dangerous, I know), the other day you guys were
talking about URL-Shortening on twitter and how you can’t just allow
links to go on forever because then people would go around that by
putting all the stuff they need in to an http://blahblahblah
So what if…
You had endless links but the actual link text you see is just
“link” ?! Crazy right? That way all links become 4 characters! Yes
yes, there’ll be security issues, but it won’t be worse than bit.ly
already is I suppose
For you html gurus out there, I guess it would look something like:
Here’s the tweet, and here’s the link and the rest of the tweet
TADA, problem solved. No more apocalypse from url shorteners dying XD.

Hey BuzzCrew-
Rare and elusive as it is for BOL to breach my field, I do love it. In Episode 1044 you discussed fake DNA for crime scenes etc. Now you were worried that this could be 1) Easily done 2) not discovered.
Well worry not, it was slightly explained in the NY Times article and a little was scene in the original paper’s abstract. The simplistic explanation is that natural DNA is methylated, a chemical process done by the cell to prevent certain genes from activated when not needed. But any DNA created by scientists isn’t methylated. There are quick and easy tests that can be done to prove whether DNA is methylated or not. As for how “simple” this process is to replicate DNA and fake it, well--in my world, relatively, I could probably do this in a few tries and be a pro by next month. As for your common murderer/thief– not likely to have the equipment or more importantly the MONEY to do so.
This would have to be a grand conspiracy and well thought-out.
Sadly we as tax payers will now have to fork over even more for our justice system/labs to add this extra experiment onto the forensics process.
And let me also say, most genetics folks always knew this was possible- just it has now been peer reviewed & published.
Cheers from Oxford

worse still the message even missed people that are in the fire effected areas, it looks like the system will need more work before it will be effective.

Is it really so surprising that a Sony exec said something stupid? He did almost get to a valid point, though. Sony made a choice. They chose a complex and novel architecture with very little developer support when it launched. The same was true of the PS2, though, and it’s STILL selling games. The PS3’s tools are vastly improved since launch though. If a developer can afford to put some long and expensive hours into redesigning code, or writing whole new engines, to take advantage of the novelties in the Cell, the results can be stunning. And Sony is gambling on a life-cycle like PS2 to win back their investment.
Now, I’ve written code for Cell, and it is definitely more challenging than most. And the tools have been very slow to roll out. But the problem isn’t that the Cell is hard, or that it might be a doomed architecture (it’s in the hands of Sony and IBM, after all), it’s that all multi-core is still very new. Turns out that all those tools developers take for granted didn’t just come out of thin air. They had to be built, and tuned to use the hardware. New design ideas like a 6-core x86 chip, a GPU, or the Cell are all way beyond what today’s tools can optimize for, without help. So someone has to do it. This is what makes programming fun.

In order to qualify for the government’s Converter Coupon Program, manufacturers have to meet the specifications listed in this Technical Appendix 1 of the “Final Rule, §301.5″:
http://www.ntia.doc.gov/dtvcoupon/DTVmanufacturers.pdf
Specifically, section 20, “Energy Standards”:
“…Eligible equipment shall provide the capability to automatically switch from the On state to the Sleep state after a period of time without user input. This capability shall be enabled at the factory as the default setting for the device. The default period of inactivity before the equipment automatically switches to the Sleep state shall be four hours…”

Hey Buzz Crew,
I often hear you (especially Tom and Molly) discussing, as a group, households that have a second TV that is antenna-only. I’ve always wondered, but never bothered to ask--why? No, not why wouldn’t they subscribe to cable--I didn’t for the first 22 years of my life--but why, if you subscribe to cable, would you hook it up to one TV and not the other? I mean seriously, who doesn’t know how to use a splitter in 2008? I’m somewhat confused by the idea of a “back-room” TV in the first place, but if you have one, why not just use a splitter and run cable to both? I have a 13-inch TV purchased in 1992 in my bedroom, and without cable hooked up to it, the picture is completely unclear and not worth watching. I guess that’s my version of a “back-room” TV, but with cable I can clearly pick up about 90 percent of the cable channels to which I subscribe. Realizing that perhaps some people are afraid to deal with wires, I should note that my cable provider, which is absolutely awful, was willing to perform this service for me if I did not know how to do it myself! Therefore, I am confused. Why have cable on one TV and not on the other? Do any of you actually do this, or are you just assuming that people do this? Please let me know. Great show. Thanks.

Hey buzz brigade,
It's Scott, a listener from way back in the 790s. Just thought I would let you know about an experience I had today with Wal-Mart and the copyright laws we all know and love so very much.
I bought Rock Band 2 for the Playstation 3 from Wal-Mart on Tuesday. I then saw it for a lower price online, so, being the cheapskate I am, I ordered it online then tried to return the copy I got at Wal-Mart. I proceeded to find, when I went to return it, that because of “Federal Copyright law” they could not allow me to return it and get my money back. I could, however, exchange it for another copy or so that’s what the lady in “Customer Service” said. So, I just took the game back home with me and I’m thinking of an Ebay auction or stopping by Ebgames to see if I can get anything for it. I know Molly will say “Just cancel the online order!” Well, it's already shipped and unless I want to pay 15 percent restocking fee and return shipping cost I end up with two copies.
Now for a small rant. I can see this law affecting returns on PC games, but consoles? I mean, come on! Sure, you could rip a PC game with ease or at least install it, find a no CD crack. But a console?! Especially the PS3! I mean, there is no way I’m spending 300-plus dollars for a Blu-Ray drive, and even then there is no way (that I know of) for running it the copy or even an ISO off the hard drive!! GAH!! OK, that should be enough
Love the show. Keep it up.
By the way, Rock Band 2 is awesome.
Nothing found in the wild……….yet!

Hey Sports Fans!
I don’t really like sports...but that is beyond the point!
I just watched a “sneak peak” of the entire first episode of season 3 of 30 Rock!
It doesn’t air on TV until the 30th. Does this happen often!?
Love you guys

Hey Buzz Town,
I saw a story on news.com that was interesting to me. Mozilla has a new browser, called Minefield, which is really fast. It is not a final release product, but it is still pretty and seems to work well. Most of the add-ons that I have installed work well, but I have run into a few bugs. Still it is well worth the speed.
The Mozilla page is here: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/minefield

It looks like Wii Fit will outsell Grand Theft Auto IV this year, Apple's already sold 10 million iPhones, people are lining up for the T-Mobile G1 Android phone (much to our surprise), and just when we started to think the economy might be turning around after all, we got the news about Yahoo laying off some 1,400-plus people. Ouch.

Congratulations on the nomination. If the Buzz Brigade (still not sure I like the moniker) is discouraged, then maybe we should find a show done by one of the community in some obscure category and vote for that show. If only we could think of one.

Tom mentioned that if you lose purchased content on a PS3 you were pretty much zitty out of luck, and there was no easy way to back it up. If you format an external drive, ( I used a $40 Seagate 120gig FreeAgent Go) FAT32, you can add the needed PS3 directories and copy your content. Of course, you have to use something such as Acronis to do this, as XP and Vista won't do it .
Thanks for the heads up on LaLa, and I really hope you guys are right about the amnesty part of it...Not that I am admitting anything. This e-mail will self destruct in 5...4...3...2.

I love that you complain about the cost of a MacBook Air, but don’t
know how much it costs.
Most computer users do not edit images or video. The MacBook Air is
perfect for any lawyer, banker, stock broker… paper pushers. You
always filter every product through your own usage, which is extreme
and NOT the norm.

Hey Jamoto +1,
Here is a pic of a Segway-bound Brazilian I saw in the wild at Burning
Man this year. The woman, with her fabulous pink tutu and umbrella, rented
it for $350 for the week. Due to a lack of rain, the playa dust was
uncharacteristically deep and terrible to bike in, making a Segway an
ideal vehicle this time round. As long as you didn’t run out of juice on
the way out, of course.

Hi guys,
I’m catching up on last week’s episodes, and have been thinking about
this first sale doctrine mentioned re: Spore last week. Just to be
clear, I think the Spore DRM is lame… but in this day of digital
media, isn’t first sale outdated?
You can sell a CD you buy at the record store, but can't you sell music
bought online? Do you think someone would buy am unDRMed MP3 from the
Amazon store from you? In fact, are you even allowed to resell unDRMed
MP3 files?
How about iTunes purchased content--for example, movies or TV show
seasons? These actually are valuable.

This topic may have been shared already, and it may not really be like Google’s carrier-less concept, but here in Southeast Asia, especially here in mobile savvy Philippines, a lot of local hackers offer dual-sim capabilities. In the days of Nokia 3310 (remember Space Impact or Picture Editor?!), buyers can opt for a modified back-plate cover that encases two sim slots that connect to the main sim slot, so your phone uses two carriers. Switching between carriers is seamless, but I’m not sure the extent of it’s capability, as I have not tried it.
We also have this phone called My Phone (check it at http://www.myphone.com.ph) that houses built in dual-sim slots and has advanced smartphone features to boot (albeit no Space Impact OR Picture Editor). Well, that’s it, what do you think?
Long time listener, great show!

Hey Jamoto!
In response to episode 820, I think people should create their own clouds, everyone having their own miniserver. Companies could make money by releasing software to run your cloud. And then you’d only have to upgrade the hardware of the server, not your little eee PC accessing the server.

The real scoop on Steve Jobs health.

iTunes hurt me.
Downloaded iTunes 8 this afternoon to check it out, and it turns out Apple had a little treat in store for me. Every time I tried to sync my iPod after that I would receive the lovely and ever popular blue screen of death, (by the way, I'm running Vista Ultimate on a Dell XPS M1330). Every time I'd plug in my iPod touch, crash. So then I got to spend an hour and a half trying to get rid of iTunes 8 and getting back to 7.7.whatever, (which--knock on wood--seems to have solved the problem). Apparently I'm not the only one: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8046500 . Just wondering if anyone else in Buzztown got this little bundle of joy as well.
Cheers,

C’mon! Can we stop complaining about the iPod’s lack of FM. Seriously!
I bought an iPod to get away from crap radio played over and over and
annoying, screaming ads from car dealers. If you need to listen to the
radio go out and buy one!!!!!!!!! Just leave me my iPod with the music
selection I like and the Best Buy Ads that are mildly amusing.

Molly was just mentioning on yesterday’s show (805) that she has been
tempted to call radio stations to figure out what songs they’re
playing. Molly, let me save you some time and introduce you to a
magical Web site called yes.com. I stumbled upon yes.com a few years
ago when I was typing in random URLs to see if they existed, and found
a diamond in the rough. Yes.com somehow tracks every song (and
commercial) played by *almost* every station across the country in
real time. I really don’t know what they are doing, but it works. You
can just type in the call letters or name of your station, and look at
their top 100 played songs, or better yet, if you remember about when
you heard your mystery tune, you can look up their logs. Just go to
Monday at 11 p.m., and you see all the songs played in that hour. They
even have links to buy said songs in iTunes and Amazon, and chat rooms
for each station. It’s amazing. I work in radio and I am baffled by
their magic because they even track stations that, as far as I know,
don’t encode the track info into their signal. Check it out.
Love the show,

Kind of breaking news here. When you install Google Chrome, it also
installs a plug-in into all other Web browsers on that machine.
The file npGoogleOneClick5.dll does what the file name suggests: It sends
all URLs you click (not visit) back to the Google mothership. So you can
type URLs and be fine. But if you click on any link on any Web page, it
sends the information to Google.
Kind of creepy.
The plug-in cannot be disabled nor removed without breaking the Google
Chrome installation; which on my computer went into the trash along with
all the other Google-spy services.
