Buzz Out Loud 901: Gigabyte in your nose

by Tom Merritt

Our resident nasal storage expert Rafe Needleman is on the show to explain some quantum physics to you. Rafe also schools me in why latency doesn't matter to bandwidth but he still won't admit that he need 60 Gbps. And we realize that the only way to save the world is by drinking more whiskey. Time to get to it.

Heya Buzz Crew,

In Episode 898 there was some quick talk about using portable keyboards to take notes on PDA’s. I have taken notes on PDA’s in some form since the days of the Tandy Zoom and Apple Newton, through Palm and Windows CE, and up to a few different smartphones yet I have never made the jump to using a keyboard accessory. Celios has an Android proof-of-concept that might change that. Their REDFLY device (currently available for Windows-based smartphones) is described as “a smartphone terminal with a large screen (7 or 8 inches) and full keyboard with no OS, no CPU, and no storage that lets you use your smartphone like a laptop.” Though not a fan of the Windows Mobile offerings, Engadget says the Android concept is “exactly the sort of magic that could make this hardware lovable.”

While I love having a laptop, there are times when I wish I could leave it behind if only to reduce my sync’ing devices by one. I know I can get it now for a Windows Mobile device, but they have always felt underpowered. There is, however, great promise from the various Android hardware manufacturers not to mention the Android platform itself. Toss in a REDFLY and the upcoming massive SD storage and I think our portable future looks pretty bright.

Love the show.

Hey JaNaToX,

In episode 900 you guys were discussing pet cloning, and Tom made a
comment about cloning his dog Jango. Well, I just thought I’d remind
Tom of how slippery a slope that could be. Remember the last time a
Jango was cloned? A galaxy wide civil war ensued, and in the end the
clones turned evil and wiped out the entire Jedi order. So just be
careful with that, Tom; the balance of the Force is at stake.

Hey Buzz Crew,
I just had a few comments about the “Google Drive”.
Microsoft actually does have a similar service called Skydrive.
Along with that, they have a desktop application called Live Mesh to automatically sync up folders to Skydrive, as well as allowing remote desktop from the web. However, from what I’ve seen it relies on ActiveX, meaning it only works on IE. Hopefully they’ll be able to fix that and expand to other browsers. Another drawback is that there’s only 5 GB of storage per user, but at least it’s free.
I look forward to seeing if Google can do any better in terms of storage space and interoperability.

Love the show,

Hello Buzz’ers, greetings from Denmark.

As one of the hapless barracuda victims, I finally made it through to
Seagate support Wednesday and was told, like Derek of episode 897, that
the request needed to be escalated to a Seagate supervisor who would
consider the issue, but I fear holding my breath for the decision will
be unhealthy.

However, others may be interested in knowing that there are some
homebrew recipes on fixing the problem out on the net.

Be WARNED though, the procedure is intricate, involves construction of
electronics, opening the harddisk, will void any hopes of warranty and
may fry your data BEYOND SALVATION if you are not careful, so if the
harddisk contains the only proof of you winning the state lottery or
something else you really care about, heed the advice of getting some
data recovery professional to do it. Also, I haven’t tried it myself so
I have no idea if its works or not. Even if it looks convincing, I will
try my luck with Seagate first.

But for the really brave, really desperate or really foolish, the link I
have saved for myself is this:

http://forum.hddguru.com/tutorial-resolve-lba-seagate-7200-bios-don-recognize-t11040.html?hilit=7200

(If you are really foolish, you shouldn’t do this yourself, but
obviously you will not be listening anyway :-)

Considering the cryptic commands I admire the perseverance of those who
figured out the solution.

Love the show; keep up the good work.

Christian

Hi JaNaTo,

I’m a little behind, so it was only recently that I became aware of
the kufuffle surrounding Molly’s leaving as a regular co-host. So,
though I’m not a member of the Buzztown administration, I humbly
submit this citizen’s resolution to the Buzztown Council, which I hope
expresses what most of us have been feeling.

BUZZTOWN RESOLUTION OF 29 JANUARY 2009

WHEREAS Tom and Molly have been, without a doubt, the heart and soul
of Buzz Out Loud (but don’t ask me to say who’s which), and as such,
Molly will be sorely missed as a regular co-host;

CONSIDERING that we had our doubts when Veronica left the show but
Jason has proved his worthiness, and (gasp) the show got even better
post-Veronica;

RECOGNIZING that Natali has huge shoes to fill but also possesses
talent and savvy commensurate with said shoe size (along with amazing
hair, despite her frequent lamentations on the subject);

ACKNOWLEDGING that Buzz Out Loud has undergone many changes over the
years and managed to remain consistently more entertaining than TWiT
(sorry Leo, but it’s true);

WHEREAS we citizens of Buzztown, as purported early adopters, should
welcome change (just as we welcomed the new Facebook layout, right?);

BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED BY THE CITIZENS OF BUZZTOWN that we be open to
the very likely possibility, nay near certainty, that Buzz Out Loud
will get even better with Natali as regular co-host if we just give
it half a chance.

BE IT FURTHERMORE RESOLVED that when she appears on Buzz Out Loud,
Molly do her utmost to rant as much as possible (recognizing, of
course, that a Mollyrant cannot be forced).

SO SAY WE ALL (right?)

Hey JaMoTo + 1:

On the dial tone issue from Monday’s show: when someone moves out of a
house or and apartment, the phone company *should* leave dial tone on
the line, but with no account information. This gives access to 911 and
611 (to be able to call the company to fully activate the line). When I
worked for BellSouth, that service was called a QuickServe.

However, QuickServes can be disabled if the line is needed at another
residence or business and no other cable pairs are immediately
available, hence the reason that Tom’s line didn’t have dial tone.
FWIW, no dial tone, no 911.

Dear BOLers,
I missed you guys. I missed so much that I went to the BuzzOutLoud wikia and downloaded (randomly) some episodes from the past three years of BOLing. I got to hear the first voicemail from Shalin, the time when dr. Karl was just a med student and a lot of great stuff: Tom saying that would license for free his voice for TomTom’s GPS, Molly confusing hermetically for hydrogenation sealed and Veronica talking “Brazil for the win” were the best ones I’ve hear

And when I downloaded the best of 2006 episode, I noticed it was too short. And the same happened with the best of 2007 and 2008 episodes. So I figure a way to not let this happen again this year: a page on the wikia! http://buzzoutloud.wikia.com/wiki/Best_of_2009

Now the listeners will have a chance to put in their favorite buzzing moments of 2009 and help Jason to edit a longer (or even two!) Best of 2009 episode.

Ever since I switched to over the air digital television, my life has been a TV horror film.
90 percent of the time the signal is so poor it cuts in and out every minute or two. If I am lucky enough to get a good signal I can’t move. Every time I or my roommate walks through the house, the signal cuts out. The resolution may be better, but of course it is, that's what happens when you shrink the picture. My screen now has a three-inch black border for most programs. It sucks! I was much happier with a little fuzzy picture and good audio, than a screen refresh rate of 1/minute and no audio, or almost worse when every actor suddenly becomes a gou’uld (not sure why that happens).

I’ve also noticed that the signal is the worst during peak viewing hours. You guys know if DTV has some type of shared bandwidth?

To the Nearly Omniscient Leaders of the Buzz Army,

I heard your cries of suffering over the way Firefox skips over drop
down lists on the Mac. I too felt this pain in the past, but today I
bring you good news.

For some reason, Apple decided that the default behavior of OS X should
be to only set the focus on lists and text boxes when tabbing through a
screen. They did have the foresight, however, to let users change that
behavior in the “Keyboard and Mouse” preference pane.

Check out this handy blog entry for the full details, and fear no longer

Long story short: prices vary considerably, this seems to depend on drives which are enterprise vs consumer focused, SLC vs MLC. budget speeds vs higher speed. etc.

Best deal though: OCZ “core V2″ 30gig drive is $70 or 2.33/GB

Worst Deal: Super Talent MasterDrive PX 64 GB goes for $807 or $12.61/GB (though i would assume its Crazy fast though)

On a very special Buzz Out Loud, we discover that we, much to our surprise and chagrin, are the cause for the ongoing economic crisis in this country. Who knew? Hey guys,

I thought this article about the emotional reaction to the end of the Phoenix Mars Lander was rather interesting. This article talks about how Twitter was used to anthropomorphize the Phoenix Lander, and, thus, cause the mission to gain alot more interest.

Perhaps this technique can be used to humanize other things, like Brian Cooley.

And a local news segment on the machine at the Albuquerque airport

2 interesting bits:
1) There’s a Homeland Security Advanced Research Projects Agency now? And you thought DARPA was weird.
B) If you can quickly identify liquid chemistry in a shampoo bottle, what other things can you identify? Could be lots of medical or industrial uses beyond saving you $4 for a bottle of water at the airport.

Hello Buzz Crew!

I thought this would be a good time to drop you a mail, as it is clear to me that you do not realize your contribution to the economic crisis.

Every time you give credit to a stupid rumor about a nonexisting product (Apple tablet, some cool new iPhone killer smartphone) you are directly influencing the economic slowdown of your country. Consumers are already reluctant when it comes to buying useless/redundant gadgets, but when they hear that maybe, someday, somehow a better/cooler/sexier product will come out they will hold out and save their money for that nonexisting product, which may never even make it to the drawing board. You should urge buyers to just go out and buy the best of what is out there.

by the way, do you actually realize how stupid is to give credit and report unfunded rumors? A 12 year old “analyst” can come up with random ideas for products, put it on a blog and a large media outlet will bring it as “industry inside information”.

example:

HTC is going to launch a touch phone based on x86 microprocessor architecture that runs a componentized version of Windows XP with multi touch interface. It will come out in Q3/09.

Dell will sell a netbook based on the dual core Intel Atom processor starting february 2009.

Apple is going to make toasters and coffee makers with bluetooth connectivity. The devices will connect to the iPhone and make you breakfast in the morning.

Guess which one is fake?

PS: when you say the word ANALyst in the context of an unfunded/undocumented report, imagine the place the “information” was pulled out of. But of course you can always mask false reporting by making up reverse report, like “Intel decided to put on hold plans for launching 24 core desktop processors in 2009 as market research shows low demand for the segment”.

Hey Molly Tom and Jason and Cooley or whatever other people join in,

I saw this story on Massively and found it interesting, apparently employers are saying thanks but no thanks to anyone they find that plays World of Warcraft, The story mentions a recruiter was told by companies to out right avoid anyone that is found to be a player of WoW. I guess this is because most anyone who plays WoW gets no sleep, gets angry easily when someone messes up something important (raids), and is likely to shout the name of Leeroy Jenkins before single handedly screwing up whatever project is underway.

http://www.massively.com/2008/12/16/employers-screening-wow-players-during-recruitment/

For the record I play Lineage 2 and many other games, and steer clear of WoW because I can’t stand Blizzard’s art style and the endless quests and raids which I so often hear about from friends who play it for months only to finally quit saying it was a mistake and cursing it endlessly.

Love the show :) Oh and a suggestion for the live stream, maybe Jason could find an image relating to each story, and put it in the empty corner where the BOL logo usually is, and change it as you go along. Not sure what use that would have but I like images, not that Molly isn’t pretty enough :)

Buzz Out Loud 641: Save Aaron's grandpa's house

So the state of South Carolina wants to put a freeway through Aaron's grandpa's house. Sound like Hitchhiker's Guide to anyone? Well, you can help by raising a public outcry. We also determined that it's probably best if you not drive into swamps, even if your GPS tells you to. And of course, don't miss the story on exploding batteries.

Macworld predictions spot on!
OK, so I know you don't like self-promotion, but I can't help but feel just a little bit smug that my earlier Macworld predictions aligned exactly with today's announcements. Seriously, check it out.

I'm not really expecting you to read this on the show...I was just, frankly, a bit surprised!

iPod Touch
After hearing that Steve Jobs was going to give the iPod Touch something closer to full functionality, I decided to bite the bullet and treat myself. So this morning I traveled to my local Apple store with my pores practically oozing with Apple fanboyism. As the Apple guy started typing the serial number of my new toy into his PDA thing, he told me it would be $300 plus tax and I responded by saying OK. Then I remembered to ask if my iPod touch would come with the new version of firmware that included Mail and Google Maps. He first responded by saying no. After some negotiating, he decided that he would give me a $20 dollar instant rebate so that my iPod Touch would cost $280 and I could buy the upgrade when I got home. I don't know if the Apple employee was not good at his job, misinformed, or was trying to cheat me, but I felt duty-bound to warn the other citizens of Buzztown.

Way to nail the Macworld predictions,
Josh from Philly

Before the hype machine starts...
Just wanted to drop a line and mention that Apple did not just invent HD movie rentals with the Apple TV update. Has been available for quite some time now on the Xbox 360 (in the U.S.). You get quite a lot more for your money if you buy an Xbox 360 instead of an Apple TV.

Oh, who am I kidding. In a few weeks people will say Microsoft has copied Apple TV by putting HD rentals on the 360. Apple PR always manages to rewrite history like that in some strange way.

Anyways, thanks for a good show. I listen to every episode.

TiVo with Unbox blows Take2 away
Tom, Molly, and sick Jason:

I am really confused over the hype that the new Apple TV and Take 2 is getting--haven't we already had the near perfect solution already connected to our wide-screens?

My TiVo Series 3 (and I assume most of the TiVo line) already has a huge hard drive (especially as compared to the puny afterthought put in Apple's), has an incredible built-in HD DVR, can stream videos in many formats from anywhere on my network, can subscribe to audio and video podcasts, can (for a one-time $29.95 fee for TiVo Desktop Plus) download recorded shows to my computer for viewing or syncing to my Zune or other media players, and makes it all seamless--"wow" is the right word, folks!

Oh, and with other seamless Amazon Unbox integration, I can download TV shows and movies (without a computer required if desired) and start watching them immediately while the rest downloads in the background-- sound familiar?

As a long-time ReplayTV user it might be hard to say, but let's embrace the TiVo Revolution my people!!!!

Thank you for the hard work and great podcasts and TiVocasts (I can't get away from you if I tried, you are everywhere)! You make my commutes and long training runs bearable and even enjoyable!! Keep up the great work!

Craig (the ironman triathlete of Buzztown)

Movie rental period
The 24-hour watch time is ridiculous. (I use Amazon Unbox.) I sit down to watch a movie after the kids have been put to bed. Most times I cannot get through a movie that night, so by the time I get to sit down again the next night, my time is up! We need at least 30-hour rental watch period so that I can be sure of being able to get through it. The result at the moment is I don't rent because I know I will not get through it.

If they want to sell lots of rentals, they need to open up this watch time.

Love the show.

Macworld keynote streamed live?!
Hey gang,

During the keynote, Engadget was slow and I refuse to go to Gizmodo. I went to News.com and they had a live blog going with no slowdown. Thanks to CNET. Anyway, I went to CNN and look what they're showing on the live video: the keynote. How can CNN do this and other news outlets like CNET can't? Enclosed is a screenshot.

The United States isn't the only country in the world, Apple!
Hey TMJ,

During the 2008 Macworld keynote, Steve Jobs announced that movie rentals were coming to the U.S. iTunes store, and it got me thinking.

How come the U.S. is getting movie rentals when Australia, New Zealand, and other countries don't even have TV shows or movie purchases yet!? Our iPod games are always late, and we have to wait an extra year for the iPhone. The prices on our iPods and Macs are all higher than in the U.S. and we don't have any Apple stores!

Is there a reason for this, or does Apple not care about countries in the Asia Pacific?

Maybe if they started making their presence known, they would have more sales here.

Just making a point. Love the podcast.

Jacob the student from Australia

Black Mustang Club calander
Buzz Crew:

Al from Michigan, writing about the Black Mustang Club calendar discussion from BOL number 639.

Disclaimer: Yeah, I work at the Ford Motor Company, but I am not writing in any official capacity.

Hopefully, after your anti-Ford rant on the calendar copyright issue-- which, by the way, was initiated by Cafe Press, not Ford--you've checked out the latest on the BoingBoing and Black Mustang Club forums and noted the letter from Ford Communications allowing--nay, encouraging--the calendar to go forward.

Additionally, note that as a 105-year-old consumer product company with one of the most recognized brand names in the world, Ford holds hundreds of copyrights and trademarks globally, which provide a significant revenue stream. Ignoring that revenue would be a disservice to our shareholders. This is not merely sustaining a major corporation, to quote Molly: "on a trickle of consumer abuse."

An example: 2007 was the 75th anniversary of the 1932 Ford V-8 coupe, better known as the Deuce Coupe. Licensing from this milestone for a product that was actually not much of a sales success when new but has since become an icon, netted Ford millions of dollars last year.

Now, I realize you venture-capital-funded left-coast intelligentsia might turn up your noses at mere millions, but at most organizations, that is real money that can not be ignored, regardless of current financial condition.

And, finally, I am wondering how many additional calendars that the Black Mustang Club will sell as a result of this little brouhaha? My guess: it'll be a banner year. Heck, I had not heard of them before, but I might even buy a calendar.

Thanks, and with the exception of your habitual Big Three cynicism, keep up the good work.

Allen

Yay! Linux chaser!
Dear BOLers,

I'm writing you this as the first e-mail I've sent on my new mail app on my iPod Touch. Yes, I was a sucker and ponied up the $20 dollars for the "update," forever branding myself as an Apple fangirl. And for me, the self-professed converted Apple fangirl, it was totally worth it.

But onto the true subject of my e-mail. I love the Linux chaser! Honestly, I could care less about the Linux stories, but I love the song and think the concept is hilarious!! (Note: I sang that in my head, just as Molly is occasionally known to do.)

I meant to e-mail bemoaning the loss of the Linux chaser before, but I never got around to it. But, for me at least, the Linux chaser was sorely missed. And I was really excited when it made a return.

Love the show. Love the Linux chaser!!

Steve weirded us out a little when his Jobs-note ended without "one more thing," but dudes, we totally called the MacBook Air! Well, OK--everyone called the MacBook Air. Also, Tom's Apple TV becomes slightly more useful, iPod Touch owners get a rude little jolt, and Google shows up on the iPhone *and* in a new partnership with WiMax operator Clearwire. It's that last part we find interesting.

24-hour rentals--Arrrgh!
Tom and Molly:

Can someone please explain to me why they are putting a 24-hour window on iTunes Movie Rentals! Why!?!? Why can't this work just like a standard Netflix queue, but without the actual discs? Here's an example:

  1. Open ITunes movie rentals and what do you see? A queue of the movies you want to watch (just like Netflix).
  2. You pay a monthly fee, not per movie, which gives you access to a predetermined number of titles at the top of your queue. If you pay $15 a month, you get access to the top 3 titles on your queue, for example.
  3. After watching the movie, you can either purchase the film (save it permanently to your computer, Apple TV, whatever) or you delete it, which then bumps up the next title up on you queue.
I believe the counterargument to this model is that it will make it easier for hackers to permanently save the movie if they follow this model. But you know what, hackers will figure out a way to permanently save the movies regardless of the accessibility window. If someone wants to figure out a way to hack it, they will, no matter if they have it available for 24 hours, 30 days, or for an unlimited amount of time.

I hope Netflix's move to go unlimited pushes Apple to do the same.

Thanks for the great show!
Roberto

Real reason Warner went Blu-ray

Looks like Warner was all set to go HD DVD exclusive, but then both they and Fox got paid off. Fox got $120 million to say Blu-ray only, and Warner got between $400 million and $500 million to switch to Blu-ray, instead of going HD DVD only. No wonder Toshiba acted like they were totally blindsided by Warner's move. Had Warner gone to HD DVD as originally planned, and Fox moved to HD DVD as well, the war would have been over, and HD DVD would have won.

http://gizmodo.com/344680/the-real-reason-warner-went-blu+ray

Very interesting. Sony probably caught wind of Warner's wish to move over, and opened up the purse as wide as they could to get them to go Blu-ray.

Stop the insanity
Heya Tom and Molly,

Maybe I heard you wrong, but I cannot believe that you guys are in support of ISPs blocking media files based on watermarking. Wouldn't this mean that I could not e-mail myself an MP3 that I purchased? Or, what about streaming music from my home computer while on the road? Now, I realize I can get around this by using a VPN (and that is currently how I remote into my home system), but that still shouldn't be a necessity. Aren't we just getting back to the same kinds of "restrictions" we have with DRM now? It's my content, don't stop me from using it as I wish.

I love the show, you make my daily commute so much better. Just stop the crazy talk. ;-)

Sunspot follow-up
Hi all,

I had horrible GPS reception driving to work this morning. This is obviously a direct assault against our newly formed tech-lovin'society, all masterminded by the sun. Specifically, against me (and my Garmin.) Just cause a guy doesn't get outside as much as perhaps he should.

Keep up the great work,

What is this 404 junk?

I don't mind you guys pimping other Podcasts on the show or even missing a few shows during the week, but it is messed up with you putting someone else's show in the feed when we are expecting the Buzz crew.

My first Sony BMG MP3s
This weekend, I received a promotional e-mail message from Starwood hotels, announcing free Sony BMG music downloads as part of a new partnership. After reading a long FAQs page about how I needed Windows Media Player and how they wouldn't play on my Mac, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the downloaded files were MP3s! [Using Molly's I- know-I-can't-believe-it voice:] From Sony! Presumably, DRM-free music from Sony wasn't happening until later this month, but it looks like they're already tearing down the walls. I can't believe I'm saying this, but "way to go, Sony!"

Howdy, all. Just wanted to make sure you saw this post on Download Squad about a new social network desktop tool called 8hands. I think Molly has mentioned something about wanting an "everything-in-one" social tool, and while I only use Facebook, this might be right up your alley.

'BrainAge' on the Wii
Molly, Brain Age is already on the Wii. The second game in the Brain Age series Big Brain Academy came out last year on the Wii. So stop saying you want Brain Age on the Wii, it's already there in the form of Big Brain Academy.

CES leaving Las Vegas
Let me be the first to encourage you and your CES-attending friends to bring your big ol' gadget fest here to Central Florida. We've got more than enough exhibit space (2.1 million square feet in the Orange County Convention Center alone) and plenty of hotel rooms to rest your weary little heads. It's certainly a different vibe here than in LV but I'm sure you can handle the culture-shock.

BTW, many of the attractions in the area parks already have sponsorships in place: Siemens has Spaceship Earth, HP has Mission Space, GM has Test Track and Volkswagen has Revenge of the Mummy at Universal Studios just to name a few, but I'm sure space could be carved out for a few more ("Men in Black" courtesy of Alienware? "The Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" brought to you by the Microsoft Vista?)

If any of y'all ever get down this way for CES or any other trade shows, drop me a line and I can get you the hookup on park tickets.
