First, apologies for the song that will be stuck in your head for at least a week. Blame the chat room. In the news today, the T-Mobile Sidekick outage, the ongoing Facebook outage, the IBM outage that briefly crippled Air New Zealand, and the unbelievable failure that is the PSP Go launch. It's a fun show.

Hi Guys and Girls
This new Lightpeek standard sounds awesome but when you’re heads down, bum up in a dark corner because one cable is too short and the network, monitor, mouse and keyboard cables all look the same I think I’ll want to strangle someone. There’s a certain elegance in having a network cable that looks completely different to a DVI cable because my monitor doesn’t understand TCP/IP and my switch won’t go 1080p.

Hello Buzzies!
First: Happy Canadian Thanksgiving, and Happy American Columbus Day!
On another note however I would like to say why the Amazon Kindle
sucks overseas. Don’t get me wrong I love the idea of the Kindle,
built in 3G, buy books as you go and it works everywhere! However if I
would like one in the Netherlands (and Europe for that matter) I have
to buy it from Amazon.com and I have to pay in American Dollars. Which
isn’t to bad, heck the Euro/Dollar exchange rate is awesome at the
moment. But here come the terrible parts:
Although Amazon says it works overseas you have to keep this in mind:
- Ships with American Plug/adapter
- 20$ Shipping
- 60$ import costs
- Works through ATT Roaming partners, but you don’t have any roaming
costs (that is what Amazon says, they say US customers overseas pay
1.99$, but say other countries are free). In reality though, the books
(which you also have to pay in American $) are more expensive in the
European Kindle store than in the US kindle store.
- Newspapers are full price, but don’t get delivered with Images and
charts (saving bandwidth)
- The blogs feature is disabled (couldn’t care less)
- The experimental browser is disabled (yes this does suck)
The part that hurts most is the ‘premium’ on books even though Amazon
says no roaming fees (and don’t give the ‘tax’ excuse, because if that
is the case, there would be a Kindle store for every country, instead
of just for Europe. And the part that if I want a newspaper I don’t
get the pretty images and graphs. What’s the point of a newspaper if
they can’t show me any Pie charts?
Amazon did a lousy job, and wants to be easy by making a deal with ATT
Worldwide instead of making deals with carriers in every country. What
they probably should have done was introduce a Wi-Fi Kindle. And
release Kindles with 3G when they had deals in those countries.
I also came across another artist that is spreading his music through the Radiohead model, 'pay what you want $0 is good too'. The artist name is 'Yellowgold' never heard anything about him, but his new album 'The Mellower' is awesome! You can find it here: http://www.yellowgoldmusic.com/ . Good stuff!
Just my 2 cents!

Barnes and Noble creating an android based e-book reader? More like Barnes and Noble creating the first Android based tablet. Google not only gets it’s hand into the e-book market after they have digitized books, but they also get the ability to test and review their android software on non-phone hardware. You can almost guarantee this device will not only read books but allow users to listen to mp3s, browse the Internet via wifi/chrome, and download all apps from the android marketplace. Knowing Google, they will also include you-tube functions as well as the ability to post on blogs and subscribe to rss feeds.

Heys guys,
In episode 1044, you guys talked about the new PS3 slim. But for owners of the 1st and 2nd gen PS3, there is more reason to hold on to their chunkier PS3s. Even those looking to buy a new PS3, if you can, get the 1st or 2nd gen models. Here’s why:
The older models have 4, instead of just 2 USB ports. They even have SACD and built-in flash card readers, something the slim lacks. But most importantly they have either the Emotion Engine or Software Emulation to play PS2 discs, something new PS3 models like the slim can’t do. Also, the option to install Linux has been removed. And there’s just something about having a large shiny imposing PS3 that you simply can’t get with the smaller PS3.
The slim is more energy efficient though and you do get HDMI-CEC Bravia sync.

I dont understand you making this big deal about the artificial DNA.
This is complete useless for crimescenes. Why would anyone create fake
DNA to frame someone, when every person loses endless DNA-samples
every minute. Just get in someones Car or House and you have His DNA.
Or simpler – just touch him on His shoulder or wait Till He is
Standing up from a chair and you have REAL DNA. Unlike tom said, found

Bottom line : in court, fake dna changes nothing.

Hey ballers,
You want cheap windows 7? How about free? For all you students out there, many universities are signed up with MSDN Academic Alliance (http://www.msdnaa.net/search/schoolsearch.aspx) – this is a repository of microsoft software, including the windows 7 RTM, which you can get for nothing. I think whatever currency you convert that into, it’s going to stay pretty cheap. (You can also gain access to this by buying an IEEE membership, which is only $15.)
It’s a pretty sweet deal, and most people who have access to it have no idea it exists.

During your discussion of Google Chrome OS today, I am curious as to what impact, if any, GCOS might also have on older PCs. Since GCOS is already targeted at low-powered Netbooks, it stands to reason GCOS might also breathe some extra life into that 5-year-old laptop you were thinking of ditching. By moving a lot of the processing power from your lap to the cloud, could an unintended consequence be a reprieve on hardware's life cycle? Certainly Google wouldn't complain.

This is a very interesting news story about the British top 40
singles, which has for many years only been based on record sales but
now they're thinking about including last.fm streams in their stats.
This is very good as it all those sites are really popular here.
What is more interesting is the stats halfway through the story about
single sales, that have gone up in the UK from 30 million in 2003 to
over 115 million in 2008. That is a fivefold increase. How dare the music
labels say they are losing money when this is the case. If anything
it shows that people are more interested than ever in music.
Well done on 1,000 shows.

Hey Buzz Crew,
I was driving around town today, doing errands and listening to Buzz Out Loud. When I heard about Bozeman job services requesting applicants to provide username and passwords for social networking sites, I was totally in denial. Molly, Tom and Jason talking about Bozeman, MT? How could this be? Afterall, Bozeman is no Silicon Valley.
As a current resident of Bozeman, I am glad to hear about my town on BOL, but the story does not put Bozeman in the best possible light. Good thing that they rescinded this policy. Please make sure the Buzz town is aware of this and this can somehow clear Bozeman’s name a bit. Bozeman is a great little town (hmm, the smallest city I’ve ever lived in, but the fifth largest city in MT) with great nature resources all around it and hope you all have a chance to come and visit this area. It is beautiful out here!
Any other BOL listeners in Bozeman?

When is episode 2000? Approximately Thursday, June 13th, 2013. [It's the second Thursday of June - gonna have to bump it back a bit]
So how’d I get that? First, I wrote a little script that would go through the months and count the number of weekdays for me. This gave me a nice estimate of how many BOLs there’d be. But it didn’t take into consideration the holidays. So I Googled a holiday list and came up with http://www.opm.gov/Operating_Status_Schedules/fedhol/2009.asp and added those to the spreadsheet, too. I had the spreadsheet do the math for me to remove them and then run a count for me.
I did the last bit by hand, knowing that the last episode of May 2013 would be #1991, I counted into 2000 by hand.
A few other notable or neat episode numbers:
1194 – Tuesday, March 30th, 2010 – BOL’s 10th Anniversary.
1234 – Tuesday, May 25th, 2010
1250 – Thursday, June 17th, 2010 [A third Thursday!]
1337 – Thursday, October 21st, 2010 [A third Thursday!]
1500 – Thursday, June 16th, ts on 1[A third Thursday!]
1750 – Thursday, June 14th, 2012 [A second Thursday - booo]
All of these dates are obviously approximate – Days off for things like CES travel and such aren’t included, nor are double-episode days.
You can see the spreadsheet at http://bit.ly/bol2000math.
Love the show, and ‘grats on 1k!

Hi guys,
Not an hour after listening to episode 918 was I myself SMiShed. I
received a text message from auto-notice@ncsecu.org (North Carolina
State Employees Credit Union). The body of the text said “State
Employees CU urgent notification:unusual activity, please verify your
online information at 877-336-6029″ Even though I knew it was a scam
I gave them a call to see if I couldn’t waste some of there time ala
419 eaters. I went strait to voice mail; it seems, unfortunately,
that they had too many other SMishy fish in their net already.
This morning on NPR I heard that in fact it was a scam and that people
should be careful not to fall for the trick.

You CNET folks being in-laws with the CBS peoples, I would like to personally thank Buzz Out Loud for bringing back my reason for going to Las Vegas!

Hi y’all!
I was thrilled to hear your second episode in a row mentioning tech
and education. As a high school teacher, I agree that providing
PowerPoint slides on handouts CAN make students lazy. However, at my
school we have a gadget called the Qwizdom student response system
(NAYY - not affiliated yada yada) that enhances PowerPoints by
allowing teachers to embed multiple-choice or true/false questions
that students answer with cool little remote devices. Teachers can
choose any type of feedback, such as instant right/wrong, ability to
change answers, or no feedback if they want answers recorded as quiz
scores. Some universities even require students to buy their own
remotes to use in certain classes.
Our informal surveys suggest students remember more when they must
interact with the presentation. Plus it’s just more fun!
Love the show,
RogueTess

“The European Space Agency (ESA) on Friday named a Frenchman and a German who will join four Russians in an innovative 105-day isolation experiment to test whether humans can one day fly to Mars.
From March 31, the six “crew” will be locked inside a special facility in Moscow that replicates conditions of a space trip to Mars.
The simulation will be followed by a 520-day experiment, starting later this year, that would last as long as a real mission to Mars…. ”

Hey Tom, Molly, and Justin,
I was listening to show 886, and something caught my attention when
Natali was talking about the Giffen good. She said that when demand
increases, price increases when talking about high-priced technology
products. What she was actually referring to is called a Veblen good;
a Giffen good is when the price of an inferior good, a good that low-
income people generally prefer (ramen, bread, etc), rises and those
low-income people end up buying more of that good. A Veblen good is
like a Giffen good, but Veblen goods are generally luxury goods, such
as that new 17-inch MacBook Pro or a Lamborghini, etc. People buy
these Veblen goods at higher prices because it is considered to be a
mark of your financial status.
Sorry for such a long email, feel free to truncate it however you
wish, just wanted to clear that up.
Love the show, keep it up!

Hey jamoto,
In Replyness to Daniels Email from Wednesday, I am also a UK listener and would like to say that the BBC does indeed broadcast their tv shows live on the internet. To clarify, the BBC iplayer is where viewers can watch shows from up to 7 days in the past and they also have a bbc watch live service which at this very moment I am watching live tv on the internet and on my terrestrial tv. This was also in place last year so Tom, you do get another correct prediction from 2008.

Hi Buzz crew,
Tom, did I heard correctly in episode 884 that you'd love to get your voice on a TomTom? That's great news!
An even better news is that you don't even have to license your voice to us. You just have to record a few voice commands, convert them in a TomTom format and publish yourself on our TomTom HOME platform where Buzz-fans from all over the world can download it for free and put it on their TomTom. I'd sure be one of them!
It's a rather easy process for geeks like us and I'd be very happy to assist.
All the best,
Jeff from TomTom and long time listener

I’m not sure why AT&T doesn’t block this then?!?

We're coming to you from CES 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada and it's all about Netbooks today. I'm sure we'll get more buzz about 3D TVs and more later this week. Hey JaMoTo + 1:
On the dial tone issue from Monday’s show: when someone moves out of a
house or and apartment, the phone company *should* leave dial tone on
the line, but with no account information. This gives access to 911 and
611 (to be able to call the company to fully activate the line). When I
worked for BellSouth, that service was called a QuickServe.
However, QuickServes can be disabled if the line is needed at another
residence or business and no other cable pairs are immediately
available, hence the reason that Tom’s line didn’t have dial tone.
FWIW, no dial tone, no 911.

After the release of the new Apple notebooks this week and no announcement to support Blu-Ray. It got me thinking….
What would really prevent them from wanting to add support? I reference the “Security Now” podcasts with our friends Leo Laporte and Steve Gibson, specifically episodes 73, 74. They discuss the addition of AACS DRM in in Vista.
In those episodes they go into the hoops and difficulty engineering the high system overhead DRM that Microsoft had to write into Vista to placate the MPAA. Basically, a LOT of code had to be written so that users could not easily copy HDVD (dead), or Blu-Ray content. Not much is said about the amount of processor and system overhead AACS creates but I bet it is a good reason why Vista was slow to market.
My guess is that Steve and the gang at Cupertino really don’t want to completely engineer and insert more buggy, imposed DRM functionality into OS X. It would mean more than just a 10.5.6 update. And a lot of their existing hardware out there would be incompatible.
Love the show!

According to Google, there's no such thing as complete privacy. And while we tend to agree, we don't necessarily think that should mean Google can drive up into the driveway, take pictures of the inside of our houses, and put them on the Internet. Maybe we're just not all on the same page. Also, new Mac notebooks and iPods are likely coming soon, along with, but not related to, a new Internet.

In episode 777, Molly stated that Silverlight only works with Vista. In fact versions (http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/resources/install.aspx?v=2.0#sysreq) are available for Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and even the Mac, so unless you happen to be working somewhere that's still using NT4 it's simply a question of whether you can install it.
There is also a compatible plug-in available from the Mono Project called Moonlight (http://www.mono-project.com/Moonlight) for Linux, though you currently need to build from source for media playback support and 2.0 support is only at the prealpha stage.

Hey guys,
In episode 776, there was a voice mail about driving slower to save gas. There are a couple of points I would like to make. First, yes it does save gas. I don’t think there is any debate about that, but to have fun I created a special calculator. If you drive slower, you save gas but it also takes longer to get to work. Time that you could have spent working. So, you can’t drive 35 mph and get the best fuel efficiency. My calculator - http://www.dotphys.net/page1/page10/efficiency/calculator.html determines the optimal speed that would cost the least amount of money in gas and time lost at work. All the details of the calculation can be found somewhere on that page also. If you are driving a prius and you make $1,000 an hour, it might give you an optimal speed of 90 mph--DON’T really go that fast, it’s illegal.
Second point. I started driving slower than the speed limit, and I really like it. I never feel like I am competing with traffic and I never have to pass anyone. Rarely do I have someone zoom up behind me. Maybe this is completely different in LA (not Louisiana, which is where I am).
The show is great.
Rhett
JaMoTo,
My 4GB (yeah, I know - SUCKER!) iPhone just filled up its entire memory--which, apparently, causes problems such as when people call me the damn thing doesn’t ring anymore.
So, I decided that I would go ahead and upgrade to the 3G phone. I went to the Apple Web site and used their nifty “find a store” utility. Turns out that there isn’t an Apple Web store real close to me--but there is an AT&T store within a couple of miles.
So I called them (the local store--during operating hours) to see if they actually have the new iPhone in stock. The automated operator gave me three options--none of which really matched “Do you have the new iPhone in stock?”--so I tried them all.
EVERY single one of them told me to hang up and call a different number! I mean, seriously, really? Really? You’re AT&FreakingT! You can’t manage your network to the point where I could press 1 or maybe 3 or, better yet, 8 (but, clearly you don’t want to give me 8 options--slackers!) to talk to someone in the GD store that could answer my fairly simple question?
So now I am trying to decide if I should remove my "Dr. Horrible" videos so that my phone will actually ring--not cool.
Still anonymous,

Hey Tom Molly Jason,
I just wanted to stick up for my industry a bit and give a friendly “well actually”. In episode 773 or 774 (can’t quite remember) Molly mentioned California’s “Bluetooth headset law.” While I’m not a complainer/nitpicker by nature I felt I had to write in to clarify. The fact is that California has a hands-free law, not a Bluetooth headset law. While the difference may seem trivial, I work for a company that lives on, and is helping to define this distinction. Many people perceive Bluetooth headsets to be the only option for talking hands-free. However, the fact is that there are many options which are easier to use, more comfortable, and by-far more stylish than an uncomfortable little thing clamped onto your ear. Installed Bluetooth car kits and portable Bluetooth speakerphones are just two of the several options for people who want a premium option to Bluetooth headsets. Without asking for free-advertising by saying my company’s name, I would appreciate it if you could mention this difference. It is difficult enough for companies like mine to combat the perception that “Bluetooth means headset” and in the interest of marketplace competition please just realize that laws like California’s do not leave consumers with a single option.
Thanks and love the show.
