Buzz Out Loud Podcast 1111: Facebook is depressing

by Tom Merritt

Why the long Face...book? A woman battling depression put some pictures of herself having fun privately on Facebook. Somehow the insurance company found them and cut off her benefits saying she looked happy enough and must be cured. Really? We also get further impressions on Google's Chrome OSD now that we've had more time with it, and YouTube pulls a Hulu, but not in the good way.

Give them a dedicated server on the PC or Crack down on moders, watch your

Hey Buzz Crew,

You’ve been getting me excited about the Nook, with its ability to loan a book out to a friend for up to two weeks. But I just heard that not only won’t you have this option for all publishers (which you may have mentioned), but even when a publisher supports it, you can only loan a book ONCE. So if I loan you a book and you’re too busy to even start it, I can’t loan it to you again, and nobody else can benefit from me loaning it out either. Thanks for wasting my ability to loan out that book! :)

So three guesses where I went today. I’ll give you a hint it rhymes with the Ficrosoft Smore. Yes, the wait is over and I’m happy to announce (although a I’m tiny bit bitter) that the Microsoft Store is in fact a success. First of all the place is HUGE and loaded with all
the best Microsoft using hardware (and no doubt the most expensive).
In the store there are plenty of Zunes and sleek laptops, but the things that seemed to really seemed to put the asses in the seats were the gigantic touched screened computers, Xbox 360 games as well as some surface like gaming tables. Now this store does look a lot like an Apple store and it would have been nice to see some originality but all in all I have to say that Microsoft did this right. Although I have yet to have seen the new Apple store that is under construction as of now. All I know it that It has swallowed the store next to it and is now twice as big as before. So needless to say I’m freaking out over what’s behind that big black box inclosing it and so are the people judging by how many of them were trying to sneak peaks through the crack in between the doors :) Apple better come back with something FREAKING AWESOME to top this new store.

Hey Buzz-Crew,

In ep 1077 you asked for a CIO/CTO to weigh in on the IBM Inotes vs Goolge Docs hypothetical prize fight for our hypothetical business. While I am not of that stature at my company I do sit right outside the out CIO’s office so I wrestled him down, duct taped him to his chair and made him answer this very question!

Okay, well not really that first part but he did answer and here is what he said:

“We actually looked at Google Docs for cost reduction and there is no way we could use it. With all the customer data that we have and the nature of our business (not to mention internal systems) having something in the cloud would be much to risky. Cloud stuff just isn’t reliable enough for us to even consider using it. Not only that but there was no way that Legal would let us (not to mention that it didn’t clear SOX compliance). And let us not forget about our ‘wonderful’ users. The learning curve that they would have to deal with might just break them.”

So there you have it. The argument against clouds at my company are (1) Reliability, (2) Legal / SOX issues and (3) Inept users.

Hey, Buzz crew,

With all the discussion about mobile OS platforms and developers in
yesterday’s show (episode 1078), I’m surprised you didn’t mention the
announcement Adobe made on Monday about how they’re going to enable
Flash developers to code apps in Flash that can then be converted into
native iPhone apps. Technical merits aside, it’s an interesting move by
Adobe to keep Flash application and game developers from abandoning
Flash to take a swing at developing apps solely for the iPhone, and you
have to wonder if Apple is somewhat annoyed that five iPhone apps
created with this technique made it into the app store.

Hey Buzz Crew,
I am listening to Episode 1076, (I’m a bit behind) and upon hearing Tom’s dreams of “Tenspeed and Brownshoe” being streamed online, I ran over to Google to find out what in the world he was talking about. So of course, I wound up at IMDB reading up on the subject, how mundane right? Why would I be emailing to tell you this? Well, I noticed at the top of their page, a popularity ranking, and had to laugh when I saw that the popularity of the series went up 34% this week. Glad I wasn’t the only one left wondering “wtf?” after that comment!

Buzz Crew,

Great show!

You read an email on your October 1 show from James the Field Engineer about Star Trek Props. I worked in pumps/irrigation sales for a couple of years, and found that Infiltrator (http://www.infiltratorsystems.com/productline/h20_chambers.asp) -brand effluent-irrigation chambers are used very, very heavily in TNG, DS9 and Voyager series. They are used as wall support structures and decorations on walls in many diverse sets. As a guy who worked with the stuff every day, it became very distracting to see it in reruns. But it was clever, I’ll give ‘em that.

Also, in about every third episode, an away team would land on a planet, and in the settlement on that planet would be the same, identical trussed lighting-support structure (like for stadium lights, just lighter duty) right in the middle of the village. It would always go up past the camera frame and, presumably, be holding the set lights. But they made it look like it was the aliens’ normal technology. For every alien culture ever.

You won’t possibly care about this enough to read it on air, but Tom might get a kick out of it if he recognizes the Infiltrator linked stuff in various sizes on old STTNG reruns.

Every story I’ve read says he stole the 30,000 dvds in a year.. Jan 2007-Feb 2008.

Doing the math…

Speculating the postal worker stole exactly 30,000 dvds and worked 13 months… which would be about 56 weeks… he would have stolen about 535 dvds per week. If he worked 5 days a week that is 107 dvds per day. That is a little more than 13 dvds per hour. (8 hour shift) If he worked 6 days a week, that would be 89 dvds per day with about 13 dvds per hour (6 2/3 hr shift).

Now if the postal worker actually stole the 30,000 dvds in 2 years, which would be about 25 months, which would be roughly 108 weeks, he would have had about 25 months to pull off his heist. He would have stolen about 277 dvds per week. If he worked 5 days a week, that would be 55 dvds per day. That would then be about 7 dvds per hour. If he worked 6 days a week, that would be 46 dvds per day with about 7 dvds per hour (40 hour work week considered).

Netflix shipped approxmiately 638,400,000 dvds in the 13 months.

Massive shake-up to net tax in UK

I actually defended this proposition to begin with (and I think even on BOL last time), but now it's closer to reality, and my over-taxed face feels slapped, pointed and laughed at. It's not good news for anyone in the UK, except for the people who can't afford computers, who can now be sold super-fast Internet.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/sep/23/broadband-tax-election

(he later emailed) Although this 'broadband tax' would bring broadband to poorer areas, the real goal is to offer 90% of the UK population broadband speeds of at least 2Mbps - that includes the poorer areas, but as well as the rural areas currently restricted to expensive satellite Internet packages which are priced out of their reach. To do this government plans to tax every single household which has a phone line.

Hey Folks,
Thought you might be interested to know that a mobile phone running a GPS app is now considered illegal in my home state of Victoria in Australia. So it seems that the government is either in bed with GPS manufacturers or they consider this as bad a texting while driving. Stand alone devices in cars which are only your GPS unit with no mobile phone attached are still fine. Whats next? Our mobile phones have to be left at home because we cannot have them in the car at all??? I believe this will also apply to the Tom Tom app even when it is in the cradle when they release it would still be illegal.

In regards to the Comcast 100MBs service

In Brooklyn, NY Cablevision is offering a similar service for $79.99 a month it's called Optimum ULTRA @ 101MBs

Its sweet except for the $300 installation charge but I'll eat a onetime charge rather than a progressive $300 bill.

Thank You

Hey Buzz crew,

As I was installing the new version of iTunes today (version 9.0), I saw something interesting. I had to accept a new EULA (which usually happens), but this time, they had a summary of the important changes over the actual legalese. This appears to be an easy way to get around the fight between a EULA that the lawyers want and one that we can understand. The only issue: you have to trust the company (in this case, Apple), that they are doing a fair job summarizing the changes. :-)

Love the show!

hey buzzards!

you mentioned how 3D TV is being used to prevent piracy and how it
will eventually circumvented.

yes, that’s true… but it would still essentially eliminate the
distribution of cam and telesync copies of films still in theaters as
cammers wont be able to record films in this fashion. you wouldnt even
be able to film a 3D image with a 3D camera for obvious reasons
(unless it were some kind of crosseyed lens setup to somehow pinch the
alternating perspectives into a single image, a la “magic eye”
stereoscopic images. just kidding).

pirates wouldnt be able to release anything until a screener is able
to be ripped at the very least, therefore putting more reluctant
viewers into the theaters if they just cant wait for it.

just another point of view.

(obligatory) love the show!

BOL 1059: Nano Goes retro with FM radio

by Tom Merritt

Apple announcements were a little mundane. The One More Thing was an iPod Nano with a camera. We were more impressed with the fact that they added an FM radio. But really that's the No. 2 story. The Palm Pixi caught our eye for top billing. Should it catch yours?

Hey Buzz Crew-

I was at Wal-Mart last night when I saw a couple of movies that I wanted to add to my Netflix queue, so I pulled out my HTC Touch Windows Mobile phone (which I haven't been real impressed with by the way) and added the movies to my queue using Netflix's mobile site. On my way home I was thinking...what if Netflix came out with an app that allowed you to use your phone to scan the barcode of a movie while in a store to add it to your queue? Love the show as always!

Hey guys,

I decided to test out querying for the term ’search’ to see altavista pop up in google as no.1 like brian mentioned in yesterdays podcast. (I used to like altavista also), but waddayaknow!!! Bing is actually the no. 1 result, followed by altavista!

Is there any reason why google hasn’t put http://www.google.com as a search hit on the list when looking for the term ’search’ anyway?

Hi Buzz Crew,

You are making so much fun of the idea of Windows 7 installation parties. Well actually... this kind of parties are VERY popular and called: install fest (just type into Google). What you will see is a LOT of Linux install fest parties :) Microsoft communities also organize install fests. Usually they take place in some bar/pub where you sit with a bunch of geek friends and install a new release of some product. And after that you sum up the finished installations, unfinished once, also there are some disasters like a burned laptop etc. ;)
So to finish this email - the idea is not new, not only MS does it but a lot of user communities :)

Palm's adding more apps to a commercialized app store. It's calling it the app catalog, which got us thinking about all the different names we could have for app stores. We also get a little excited about the new Sony PS3 slim. Does it herald in the resurgence of the PS3? Probably not. Will it help Blu-ray? Maybe a little.

When discussing the TomTom app on the iPhone, Molly said. “Four words. ‘Open Source Mapping Project.’” I’m not sure if this is a well-actually. I’ll leave it up to you.

Floss Weekly Ep. 81 covered a project called OpenStreetmap. I could not believe it when Leo Laporte said he’d never heard of this project, but, apparently, it is still a little known wonder. I first heard about it a few years back when the project was hadn’t really taken hold in the States. It’s quite mature now, and worth covering. This is even more true because the more people who become involved, the more useful this project becomes. Please, take a look (or another look, Tom) and tell the bol audience about it.

#2: In Floss 82 [2], Randal Schwartz spoke about his new found favorite iPhone app, Roadee . Apparently Roadee uses OpenSteetMap data to do spoken turn by turn directions on the iPhone…. and it costs $2.

In closing, suck it, TomTom.

Tom Merritt,

I called the Best Buy here in West Jordan and spoke to the person in
the video games department. After they spoke with their manager, they
said that they stopped the Gamestop used game price promotion last
Saturday, at the end of that week. The sales person said that they
received so much publicity from the Internet that their corporate
office contacted them and told them to discontinue the sale. The clerk
also said that the corporate office would evaluate the results of the
promotion and determine if this sale is something the company wants to
do in all of its stores, instead of just at the one in West Jordan, UT.

gas stabilizer… from personal experience (2 decades plus!) sta-bil gas stabilizer works. call any of your local motorcycle shops, they’ll verify that. you put it in the gas when you store your bike, mower, generator, boat, etc. and you won’t get “bad” gas when you try to restart it. no reason the same thing wouldn’t apply to an auto, just a bigger internal combustion engine. yes, gas evaporates and gets gummy, plus water also contaminates it over time… but I’ve seen it breakdown/separate. i bet that engineer has never rebuilt a carb that had gas left in it for several years. –alan

So at one time before February 2008, you could get a domain name for life if you signed up for Microsoft's Office Live. Today Microsoft says it's no longer free. Even though they said it was free for life. But they did acknowledge that "It's a change." You think? Also you can now deposit your checks via iPhone. Wow.

Buzz crew,

Amongst all the haters, I just wanted to let you know that I love the
story choices you guys make. I realize that you have been getting some
haters recently, so I just wanted to chime in with the other side of
the story.
The number, amount, and kinds of stories you choose are thoughtful and
interesting. There’s a great balance between the stories everyone else
covers and stories you don’t really see anywhere else.
My only request is that others who think that the story choices are
excellent chime in as well. I’m sure we’re not the minority, and I
hate to see you all discouraged.

Now your time spent talking about whether or not you should be talking about Twitter, Apple and Google is taking up more time than you spent on those companies before. Now I propose a meta-topic where you talk about whether or not you should be talking about whether or not you should be talking about Twitter, Apple and Google. If you recurse enough times you should be able to fill the entire time that was formerly indeterminate.

Here’s the thing, (as far as covering the iPhone too much) I own a Nokia N810, and love it, but you don’t cover the apps for it, but covering a story about an iPhone app is going beyond the coverage needed (for general tech podcasts, if BOL were an iPhone podcast, that’d be different). Then… you mention in the VERY next story about having a GSM eBook reader? I have one (and will have one very soon, even better)! The Nokia N900 has been sent to the FCC for review. It will be GSM/UTMS and running Maemo, which supports FBReader (a fine open source ebook reader ) which I’m using on my Nokia N810 right now to listen to the BOL podcast, along with sending this email. I have it currently tethered to my NON-smart phone from AT&T (Yes you can) and am using an Apple bluetooth keyboard (which The iPhone cannot use) to write this fracking email!
Yes I’m biased but as far as tech goes, the iPhone sucks and the Nokia maemo platform kicks it’s butt! You’ll never see Nokia kick out an app from their “store” (APT-GET sources list), where ALL the apps are free, take that Apple fanboys! HA!

On today's episode, we invent a new word that we hope will show up on a show like "The Hills" sometime soon. Plus, we get fired up, make terrible jokes about monkeys controlling computers with their brains, and actually work in a tiny bit of news. For example, Apple's doing a tablet and music labels are trying to sell some new weird digital album thing. You might like the "fired up" part better.
