I'm very pleased that LegalTorrents.com has come along to prove that I'm not crazy when I say there are plenty of legal reasons to use torrents. And they even have a torrent of Bible 2.0. Probably with new commandments from the MPAA. We also chat about AMD and Intel making nice, and how long that might last. And Microsoft tries to patent sudo. Yes, they said, "Sudo grant me a patent," I'm sure.

Hi buzz-crew.
Regarding the EU cookie law. How do Local Shared Objects
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_Shared_Object) fit in to the
equation?
Will LSOs have to be approved by the user as well? If not, then all
sites will just store all data in LSOs instead and those are even
harder to get rid of.
To delete LSOs you have to go to the right folder on your computer and
delete the files manually or you have to go to Adobe’s control
panel-site and delete them there. On the control panel-site you can
also choose if sites should be able to store data on your computer or
not, BUT if you block storage some sites will not work (ustream is one
example).
If you’re using Firefox there is an extension called BetterPrivacy
which gives you better control over LSOs.
Lllloooooooooove the show.

Buzz Crew,
Isn't anyone a little worried about what Google is doing with all this information they are collecting? Maybe they are developing all these free products just to gather as much information as they can?
Example:
I am at work, get a Gmail from my boss saying I need to finish a report (and we use Google Docs of course because it's free). My wife calls my Google Voice number and says we need toothpaste. I leave work to go to the gym, and decide to watch a popular YouTube video while on the bike. A 15 second Crest commercial happens to pop up, but I skip it. I usually take the long way back to work (of course Latitude knows this).
Then my Droid tells me, "You better pick up some Crest on the way back to work and take the shorter route since you will pass a drugstore. And you better hurry since you are only half done with the report!"
And of course due to some error all this ends up searchable on Google.
Love the show,

Hi BOL folks,
The reference to the 5gb limit on data is in the fine print from the PDA/Smartphone email plan (which I have for my Droid).
It says:
The Data Plans and Features MAY NOT be used for any other purpose. Examples of prohibited uses include, without limitation, the following: (i) continuous uploading, downloading or streaming of audio or video programming or games; (ii) server devices or host computer applications, including, but not limited to, Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, automated machine-to-machine connections or peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing; or (iii) as a substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections. This means, by way of example only, that checking email, surfing the Internet, downloading legally acquired songs, and/or visiting corporate intranets is permitted, but downloading movies using P2P file sharing services and/or redirecting television signals for viewing on laptops is prohibited. A person engaged in prohibited uses, continuously for one hour, could typically use 100 to 200 MBs, or, if engaged in prohibited uses for 10 hours a day, 7 days a week, could use more than 5 GBs in a month.
For individual use only and not for resale. We reserve the right to protect our network from harm, which may impact legitimate data flows. We reserve the right to limit throughput or amount of data transferred, and to deny or terminate service, without notice, to anyone we believe is using an Data Plan or Feature in any manner prohibited above or whose usage adversely impacts our network or service levels. Anyone using more than 5 GB per line in a given month is presumed to be using the service in a manner prohibited above, and we reserve the right to immediately terminate the service of any such person without notice. We also reserve the right to terminate service upon expiration of Customer Agreement term.
Hope this helps.

The music publishers also seem like they're full of stupid too wanting to get a performance right for you watching a TV show alone in your room. Hey Buzzcrew,
Just listening to episode 1064 and had to comment on a quick way to handle turning off your check engine light, without having to even spend $20 on the device Rafe mentioned. Provided you've fixed the problem that caused the light to turn on, you can shut it off (in most cars I've worked on, can't speak for every model out there...) by simply unhooking the negative terminal of the car battery, letting it sit for about 20 minutes, then rehooking up the battery and starting the car. This basically resets the engine computer, and since the car will detect nothing wrong, as you've fixed the problem, the check engine light will stay off. The only downside is, you'll lose all your radio presets. Hope this helps someone out there.

Regarding the XP issue from episode 1064, here are some additional details from Microsoft available in entirety at http://www.microsoft.com/oem/english/content/software/XPEOL.mspx. I'm looking forward to Windows 7 also.
On June 30, 2008, Microsoft will stop distributing Windows XP as a standalone product that can be bought shrink-wrapped in retail stores. We'll also stop sending it to Dell, HP, Lenovo, and all the other major PC manufacturers to sell on their PCs. This is called ―End of Sale‖.
That said, Windows XP isn't going to disappear overnight.
You may still see copies of the software--or computers preloaded with it--for months as stores and PC makers work through their inventory. Also, system builders can continue to sell PCs with Windows XP until January 2009.
Finally, Microsoft recently announced that computers with limited hardware capabilities--devices sometimes called Netbooks or ultralow-cost PC s (ULCPC)--can carry Windows XP Home until June 2010. (Read about the ULCPC program on Microsoft PressPass.)
Have fun,

This is Dr George, the kidney doc and I was listening to podcast 1064
and thinking “finally, the topic of urine is a subject that I can sink
my teeth into”. Urine that is dumped in the sky can shine because of
crystals in the urine, such as calcium or urate crystals.
Maybe the astronauts had some kidney stones? Ouch!
Luckily urine is usually sterile, so no worries about it showering on
you, unless the urine housed a urinary tract infection. In any case
urine sometimes smells foul, especially if, as Molly suggested, it was
old stagnant urine left standing for months.
Enough about my life, and yes, this falls under the category of “Too

Hello Buzz crew. Like many others, I downloaded the Xbox New
Experience update last night, wasted about 20 minutes tweaking my
avatar so I don’t look like a punk kid, upgraded to LIVE Gold, and
made a beeline for the Netflix player. Microsoft and Neflix have
provided an amazing service to Netflix subscribers. It’s a little
disappointing that you can only browse titles in your Instant Queue,
but the interface is slick and easy to use. I selected an episode from
the (otherwise disappointing) current season of Heroes. Within
seconds, I was watching the smooth playback in high definition. You
can scan forward and backward through the video using a coverflow-like
view that shows thumbnails from the show.
The only downside was that I had to switch to my TiVo to order pizza.
If the Xbox Netflix viewer is anything like what we can expect to see
from TiVo, then bring it on. Can you imagine Pizza AND Netflix in one
UI? Now THAT’s a great user experience.

Hey JaMoTo and the extra crew member!
Looks like we’re not immune from the big media companies as much as you are in the States. According to The Age…
The Australian film and television industry has launched a major legal action against one of Australia’s largest Internet service providers for allegedly allowing its users to download pirated movies and TV shows.
The action against iiNet was filed in the Federal Court today by Village Roadshow, Universal Pictures, Warner Bros, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, 20th Century Fox, Disney and the Seven Network.
The interesting thing is, the Seven Network is in this suite. For those who don’t know, we have 3 major commercial television networks, namely the Seven Network, Nine Network and Network Ten. The last 2, offer Australians on-demand downloading of their shows on their website, and the Nine Network themselves have locally produced shows on the iTunes store. So why is the Seven Network resorting to suing when they could just easily join the other two networks by providing Australians more legal alternatives to the torrents? This goes for the other companies in the suit. If they really want to kerb illegal downloading, why don’t they open some US-exclusive options like Hulu to the Australian audience? You guys (maybe it was The 404, I can’t remember, haha!) said yourself that Hulu’s catching up to YouTube in terms of revenue.
It’s great to be an iiNet customer at this stage too. First the trial of the internet filter, now this from the entertainment industry. I’m with iiNet myself, so it’ll be interesting what’s to come.
Love the show guys!
Cheers!

Hobos are also governed by a code of ethics, have a duly appointed hobo

pictographic symbols and codes which they used to communicate things
such as marking a good place to sleep, where you can find someone
willing to give you food, and what towns have cops that will beat the

So I think Tom will be doing a decent service by launching a hobo social

I’m surprised that Domino’s Pizza in the U.S. is only now catching up with Domino’s Pizza in the U.K. when it comes to couch potato ordering - Domino’s Pizza has been on Sky’s digital TV platform for the last several years (IIRC, since the beginning 7 years ago). And if you’d rather order your Domino’s Pizza from your laptop instead of your TV then just go to the Dominos Pizza website (http://www.dominos.co.uk/) which has also been running for years.

On the topic of pollies and tech, and Web 2.0.
The Australian Prime Minister had joined Twitter. http://twitter.com/KevinRuddPM
It would even appear that Kevin himself is putting up some post (I am
skeptical as ever), but some posts are signed off by what would appear
to be his media department.
What is even crazier, they have been replying to questions and
comments. I would NEVER have expected to see this used as a two way
communications method.

I talk to one of the Phoenix mission managers today. I asked, “If by some mirical Phoenix powers back up after the winter would the mission continue?”
Apparently Phoenix cannot analyze any more soil. The equipment they use to test soil samples has exhausted. The camera and weather station may still work, but they would have to request more money from NASA to continue the mission. Then he told me they really don’t think phoenix will come back.
Why name it Phoenix if you’re going to let it die. Here’s keeping hope alive.

This is Daniel, tech support from Memphis. Just writing in reference to episode 852 where another Daniel asked "WHY THE HELL WOULD SOMEONE REGISTER HOBOBOOK.COM?" ..sigh. Thank you Tom and Molly for sharing my vision for the online hobo community! You have inspiring me to do something with one of the domains I've been sitting on for a while: Hoboforums.com. Why hoboforums? I honestly can't remember, BUT now I am glad I actually have something to do with this domain! If you are wondering, yes, the site is exactly what you think it is.

Greetings, JaMoTo + 1 guest
It’s worth mentioning that games without DRM can be successful, an example is “Sins of a Solar Empire”, a real time strategy game .. in SPAAACE…
The game sold over 500,000 copies, 100,000 via digital downloads. The game disc came with no DRM or copy protection.
http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2008/09/05/solar-empire-moves-500-000-units
Let’s hope EA learns Stardock (the publisher of Sins of a Solar Empire).

Hey JaMoTo! I just was wondering if Adam was willing to release Podcaster as a jailbroken application. I know that I personally have been dying for An application like this ever since I had to stop using mobilecast with the 2.0 update. I don’t really mind jailbreaking my phone, if it means incredibly useful applications like Podcaster or Intelliscreen, which Apple has apparently decided are not okay.
Taylor (from Canada)
Buzzcrew + guest,
My prayers have been answered.
I am a field computer tech so I spend a lot of time traveling from customer to customer. There has been an occasion on two that I forget to sync up my iPhone before I leave for work. So I am left in my car without my newest BOL.
I though how great would it be to have an application that could download some of my favorite podcasts. I was excited when Alex S. had sent in an email about his podcaster, not so excited when I heard Apple rejected it. So I was searching through the free apps on the iTunes store and I noticed this application called FlyCast. I read the description and thought it sounded interesting. I downloaded it and installed it. When you launch the program it gives you several option: city guide, radio with 3G/Wi-Fi, radio on Edge, AccuRadio, and something called On-Demand Audio. I clicked the on demand and then clicked on Technology. Lo and behold, whats on TOP! Buzz Out Loud! It buffered for a while and then played. It was awesome. One cool feature is that it buffered a couple of minutes of audio in case of network problems. I wanted to pass this along to other listeners. Thanks for a great show!
Love the show,
Phillippe (computer tech from Iowa)
Hi Tom, Molly and Jason,
You have been talking a lot about Spore and how the DRM is terrible, so I thought I would bring this to your attention. According to TorrentFreak, Spore is the most pirated game ever, thanks to DRM! The Large Hadron Collider comes online tomorrow (Wednesday, September 10), so we're just kind of assuming we'll be here for tomorrow's show. Of course, if it uses .NET, we're definitely doomed, if Computerworld's speculations about the daylong outage of the London Stock Exchange are to be believed. In any case, if today is our last show, at least we brought balance to the force. We discuss new Zunes and new iPods in (mostly) equal doses.

Mike:
Many of the posts railing against the DRM used on Spore are highly inaccurate. its true you need an Internet connection to activate initially…bad. You also only get three installs…also bad but uninstalling will credit you with an install. The error is the claim that it phones home every time you play. It only connects if you stay logged in to share content. If you don't log in you don't need a network connection. I like a good anti DRM rant as much as the next guy but at least get the facts right. P.S. I'm writing this on a Kindle in the wild
http://www.dailypress.com/news/chi-harry-potter-suitsep09,0,5060236.story
“Rapoport’s attorney, Lizbeth Hasse, said, “We are very much encouraged that judge recognized as a general matter, and an important one, that copyright holders do not have the right to stop the publication of reference guides and companion books about literary works.”
The ruling detailed instances in which the lexicon went too far in quoting from Rowling’s novels and in referring to two guides that the author had published. The judge also awarded Rowling and Warner Bros. $6,750 in statutory damages.”
I haven’t been able to find the decision myself, but if this is the case (that the fair use line was explained), I have to think that this a good thing for copyright overall. According to the NPR story I heard this morning, it sounds like a lot was made about the difference between simply cataloging the HP world in an encyclopedia and the countless other books that are written about HP that offer their own specific and new content. It’s a hard line to tow between writing about the experience of Harry Potter and writting Harry Potter. All accounts I’ve heard so far indicate that the Judge got this one right (IMHO). This makes way for the idea that so long as something is mostly your work, and not a rehash of someone else’s, there is a fair use defense available.
I know this is more in the geek than tech realm, but imagine a world where a YouTube video maker could use this decision to justify some of the creative and great things they make…

Good Evening JaBriMoTo!
Long time listener, and occasional contributor Elam here.
Interesting you four should talk about the new Microsoft Guru positions opening up around the country because I JUST got back from my final interview with Microsoft this afternoon where I was told that I was their top candidate for the first and so far only Guru position in Minnesota!
I was also concerned about the fact that it might be a commission sales position; however, I was pleased to find out that not only was strictly salary, but there would be no “sales performance” related tracking or requirements.
As far as your little Guru-Genius Prizefight, I don’t know how I would feel about that…Although I have an A+ Certification, I have a feeling Apple Geniuses would wipe the floor with me. Which is sad, considering my starting salary as a Guru would be $3-7 per hour more than the GlassDoor.com Average for Apple Geniuses! Sad…
PS: Is “Geniuses” right? Or is it “Geniui”? Help Me Out.

Note: We are making a change to our podcast feed system on Friday, May 16. However, you do not need to subscribe to a new feed. One important thing to know: If you have your podcast catcher set to download "all unheard episodes" in a feed, you will probably find a bunch of already heard episodes in your feed on Friday as a result of the changes. To lighten the hit, set your podcast catcher to only download "the latest episode" for the week of May 19-to-23.

Genesis of the drug printer
In episode 722 you discussed the idea of printing drugs. I suggest chemical stability as a reason that such an idea could prove useful. The next wonder drug could, for example, lose its wonderful properties when exposed to oxygen (as oxygen is highly reactive). Perhaps this drug could be synthesized through the simple mixture of several, independently stable and innocuous chemicals. The mixture, however, could require a proficiency of titration not realized by the average afflicted individual. What is an inkjet printer other a highly accurate fluid dispersal and mixing device? (flash to lightbulb and corresponding Bing!).
I really do adore your shows. Keep up the terrificness.

Google does semantic search?
While listening to the show, you guys made mention of the natural language search tool, I think it was called Power Set Symantec Web. I went to Google.com and put in some natural language searches and got the same answers that you guys got when searching. The search queries were:
What is Buzz Out Loud?
Who was King Henry VIII first wife.
Both of those questions were answered correctly. Maybe I missed something, but I hope you guys can address it and clear it up for me. Love the show.

Spreading the fud
When I went to work yesterday in a call center for a telecom/Internet provider that rhymes with “horizon”, I found that copies of an article about Comcast’s proposed caps had been put on everyone’s desks, even though the middle paragraph did explain just how much content one truly gets for 250GB. I really don’t think that the majority of my co-workers really understand what they are selling on a technical level, since the training we got was really just aimed at how to sell it. All they’re going to take away from that article is “Well, ours is unlimited and theirs isn’t, so we’re better!” (Even if we can only give most of you 3Mb/768k service.)
Way to spread the FUD, “Horizon!”

Obsolete words (or soon to be)
At the end of BOL 722, when Jason was talking about changing the subscription to make sure we download latest, Tom said if you don’t understand that, rewind.
Hmm, since the podcast is digital, how does one “rewind”? Wouldn’t that term have died with the cassette/VCR tapes? Open letter to mfg: please stop putting RWD on DVD remotes. My I propose fast backward, a technology neutral term (why is there only fast forward?)
Other somewhat obsolete terms I noticed lately: clockwise/counterclockwise (who owns an analog clocks when we have computers and cell phones), light bulbs (compact fluorescent lights are not really bulbs, just twisted tubes).
Sorry for random crap like this. The cough syrup is making me loopy.
