BOL 1038: Microsoft: It's a change

by Tom Merritt

So at one time before February 2008, you could get a domain name for life if you signed up for Microsoft's Office Live. Today Microsoft says it's no longer free. Even though they said it was free for life. But they did acknowledge that "It's a change." You think? Also you can now deposit your checks via iPhone. Wow.

Buzz crew,

Amongst all the haters, I just wanted to let you know that I love the
story choices you guys make. I realize that you have been getting some
haters recently, so I just wanted to chime in with the other side of
the story.
The number, amount, and kinds of stories you choose are thoughtful and
interesting. There’s a great balance between the stories everyone else
covers and stories you don’t really see anywhere else.
My only request is that others who think that the story choices are
excellent chime in as well. I’m sure we’re not the minority, and I
hate to see you all discouraged.

Now your time spent talking about whether or not you should be talking about Twitter, Apple and Google is taking up more time than you spent on those companies before. Now I propose a meta-topic where you talk about whether or not you should be talking about whether or not you should be talking about Twitter, Apple and Google. If you recurse enough times you should be able to fill the entire time that was formerly indeterminate.

Here’s the thing, (as far as covering the iPhone too much) I own a Nokia N810, and love it, but you don’t cover the apps for it, but covering a story about an iPhone app is going beyond the coverage needed (for general tech podcasts, if BOL were an iPhone podcast, that’d be different). Then… you mention in the VERY next story about having a GSM eBook reader? I have one (and will have one very soon, even better)! The Nokia N900 has been sent to the FCC for review. It will be GSM/UTMS and running Maemo, which supports FBReader (a fine open source ebook reader ) which I’m using on my Nokia N810 right now to listen to the BOL podcast, along with sending this email. I have it currently tethered to my NON-smart phone from AT&T (Yes you can) and am using an Apple bluetooth keyboard (which The iPhone cannot use) to write this fracking email!
Yes I’m biased but as far as tech goes, the iPhone sucks and the Nokia maemo platform kicks it’s butt! You’ll never see Nokia kick out an app from their “store” (APT-GET sources list), where ALL the apps are free, take that Apple fanboys! HA!

Today's show may be held together by Duct tape and super glue, but Jeff Bakalar was kind enough to help us cover the day's news. Time Warner cancels its bandwidth cap plan, the Pirate Bay founders are thrown in the slammer, and YouTube is said to launch a pay-per-view model.

Hey Buzz Crew,

Just writing in with a "well actually"... (my first actually) In #954 you were talking about the guy whose Amazon account was suspended, and how he couldn't get new books onto it, even the "free" ones. Well, actually, you CAN still load content onto a Kindle via USB. Plug it in and it will mount as a hard drive. You can copy text files (.TXT) directly to the "documents" folder without any conversion necessary, and you can use the free MobiPocket Converter (http://www.mobipocket.com/en/DownloadSoft/ProductDetailsCreator.asp , Windows only but it works on the Mac with virtualization software) to convert books from PDF, HTML, or MS Word to the MobiPocket format which the Kindle reads. Or - even better - the "Savory" kindle hack (http://blogs.zdnet.com/community/?p=246 ) will install a daemon that automatically converts PDFs or "ePub" format books dropped into the "documents" folder into Kindle format eBooks... on the actual Kindle itself (no PC/Mac conversion software required).
LOVE THE SHOW,
Donald the (no longer out of work, yay!) software engineer

Just a note, Time Warner announced that they will be canceling their planned "experiment" with caps in all markets. Yea! This has gotten a lot of local coverage in Rochester, and there is an excellent local website that has covered all developments in detail. They are having some server issues with all the traffic, but if you can get on, there is good information there.

Regarding MLB.com. I dare say, the video quality and user experience is worse than last year.

Nexdef is worse than last year's Silverlight. You CAN’T RESIZE THE VIDEO. You can’t watch full screen on one monitor and use your computer, it kicks the browser (all browsers) out of full screen.

And, I am appalled that they are calling this year's highest quality stream “HD”. The video resolution for HD starts at 720p (correct?). It’s nowhere near that. By my quick guess, I would say, it’s still in standard def and just a higher bitrate. When you put the video in full screen (when I say full screen, I mean a 19″ LCD, NOT big), it is still pixelated like CRAZY.

Do I have grounds for a class-action lawsuit claiming false advertising? For $109.99 a year, it’s kind of a rip-off….

And by the way, the Nexdef plugin is a CPU HOG. It consumes half the CPU power of my 2.4 GHZ 4GB RAM Macbook Pro. That’s faaaaaaar to much for a stupid web video.

****sigh****

My hopes were so high, and they let me down again.

Rafe,
You said something in effect of “you can watch all the games, not just the ones in your local area.” Correction…..you are blacked out of ALL games in your local area. The service is only available for out-of-market games.

Hi Buzz Crew,

Yesterday you talked about a story involving mlb.com and the streaming service that they offer. But you missed a huge nugget of information in the article. Third question from the bottom asks about streaming MLB games on the iPhone. The response given says that Apple is working on a technology that will allow for streaming the games. They go onto say that the service will come with the iPhone 3.0 software. Could this mean Flash may come to the iPhone in 3.0?

While I´m browsing open-source news, I thought I’d send in something else that I saw on that blog. Qimo is a Linux distribution for kids ages 3 and up. Excellent if you want to get a really low-powered cheap machine for the kids to play with. I have a nephew that’s about 3 years old and I might suggest Qimo to his parents so he can learn how to do things on his own.

Kinda wish this was around when I was a kid. When I was an itty-bitty, our family had good old Windows 3.1, and my dad eventually got a coloring game especially for me, since I wanted a program to use myself (before that I had made lots and lots of kiddie art on MS Paint, stored on 3×5 floppy disks). Anyway, it looks interesting.

Molly mentioned the E74 error last week. It turns out that I got that error. I called M$ and after troubleshooting I was told it was a hardware failure. I was informed that the console was out of warranty. I found that strange since I had heard that they had a 3 year warranty and my box was manufactured less than two years ago. I was informed that the three years are only for the RROD problem. The console repair would cost $120 but I could save $20 if I did it online. Unfortunately every time I tried to do it online I kept getting and internal server error(500). I informed the CSR about my online problem and I got the discount after being escalated (probably to the guy in the next cubicle).

Nice way to stop bleeding money M$. Change the way the error shows up and now they can make money on the deal. If it wasn’t for my zombie shooting 10 year old this would make a nice addition to my trash day collection.

In the mid 70’s the CB Radio became an everyman’s way to connect to other people. With the CB you could find and talk to people you didn’t know, get help, avoid speed traps, and find information of all sorts. You did all this while using a “handle” as a substitute for your actual name. The CB exploded in popularity. Hollywood jumped on board and the CB was featured in a long list of now forgettable movies ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizens‘_band_radio#CB_in_movies ). Then as quickly as it appeared, the CB faded away.

Will Twitter see the same rapid adoption and slow fade?

Hey guys,

I love when you talk about stuff I know about…

There are about 1 000 000 000 000 neurons in your brain, and some may have
upwards of 10 000 synapses. The human nervous system is massively parallel
and hierarchical. (This is called the Hughlings Jackson principle).

Compare this to the lovely flatworm, the nematode. It has 302 neurons, and
we know what every circuit does, and, we know the whole frakking genome. So
the nematode is used a lot as a model for learning at the synaptic level,
whereas more complex processes are usually looked at with neural network
models. These models are just computer programs. Indeed, I learned how to
write such code in grad school, where my foreign language was Turbo Pascal
(no kidding). It seems that the research project you are talking about
combines the best of both worlds.

BTW, the synaptic process involved in learning is likely a phenomenon called
long term potentiation. This was first postulated by Canadian
neuropsychologist, Donald Hebb.

I wonder if I should count these emails to BOL as publications on my CV, my
annual report to the Dean is due soon…..

Molly,

In previous shows you talked about how all of the wires from wall mounted TVs and home theater components would negate the benefit of wall-mounting them. Check out this Switched.com article about flat HDMI cables that you can put on the wall and paint over. I think flat paintable speaker cables have been around for a decade or so. Now all we need are flat power cables that can carry more than 1kW of power and we’ll be set.

It's episode 724, wherein we argue, but in a happy way. MySpace wins a $234 million antispam judgment they'll probably never collect, and Google blurs faces in Street view, maybe just to be nice. Also, it turns out seniors are more acutely aware of the passing of time (or they hate commercials more than the youngsters do) and Qtrax makes four improbable deals.

Note: We are making a change to our podcast feed system on Monday, May 19. However, you do not need to subscribe to a new feed. One important thing to know: If you have your podcast catcher set to download "all unheard episodes" in a feed, you will probably find a bunch of already heard episodes in your feed on Friday as a result of the changes. To lighten the hit, set your podcast catcher to only download "the latest episode" for the week of May 19-to-23.

Antitrust law applicability to Net Neutrality

Antitrust law applicability to net neutrality--Price Discrimination laws (Robinson-Patman Act--which added provisions to Clayton Act) prohibits charging competing customers different prices for like products does not apply in the consumer context. If it did think of the chaos it would cause say for example automobile dealers...nor does it apply to services; and it is not immediately clear whether net bandwidth would be a commodity or a service--electricity has gone gone both ways (AC/DC sort of thing).

--Michael Scott

USAF Botnet

Guys and Gal,

Decades ago I worked in a state security hospital. We never carried weapons for the simple fact that any weapon could be taken away and used against us. This memory leaped to mind when you relayed the news of the Air Force plan to build their own botnet out of unused and obsolete computers.

Think about it. Those who are finally tasked with setting these computers will be told: "Set these up with this software, but somewhere out of our way." So these boxes will be running in an unused cubicle in an open office or in that overflow junk room in the long hallway not many people frequent. It will only take one or two of these boxes to be hacked by someone passing through a no doubt less than high security area and bingo: this supposed US defensive weapon is set to be an offensive weapon--against it’s own supposed masters. Brilliant.
