Buzz Out Loud Podcast 1118: The mean streets of Dell

by Tom Merritt
Share

Turns out Dell says it never deleted complaints from its forums about throttled processors, and it is working hard to fix the issues with updated BIOS. Donald suggests that the folks who claimed they were deleted by Dell probably lost a lot of street cred. We also speculate on the meaning of the Comcast acquisition of NBC Universal. Will "Heroes" become more Comcastic?

According to this article , Verizon’s map of AT&T coverage is not actually correct; The real map is -smaller-! Seems verizon’s actually showing a bigger map than AT&T actually cover because it included their 3rd party towers, that AT&T don’t own, just pay to use as and when they need it.

So what, you might well ask; phone still works there – funny, but not that big a deal.

Well it appears (See same article) AT&T may decide to cut off your service if you use too much data in those areas, as these third party towers cost them more. So the map of coverage is realy a map of ‘mostly coverage, unless you’re in specific, unmentioned areas where the coverage is limited.

Makes me feel happy to be in the UK where the iPhone is available via O2, Orange and soon (6 months I think) Vodafone will also offer it.

Hey Buzz crew –
I was reading about Talkback – the open source text-to-speech screen reader designed for the droid. As I’m sure you’re aware the iPhone 3G S has voiceover capabilities hence making it mostly accessible to visually impaired/blind users but I can’t find a damn thing on Talkback! With all the talk of Droid becoming a stronghold (?) in the smart phone market and Jason’s undying love of his own bot I wondered if anyone had gotten better news than this link on its accessibility features.
Also as a side note I had to respond to the Kindle talk recently regarding it taking over the world and being accessible by design. Note that even though it may provide some text-to-speech capabilities most books (and publishers) have disabled this feature out of fear of audiobooks loosing sales *and* the menus and toolbars do not have speech output making them inaccessible to navigate for those with print/visual disabilities.
Love you though, love the show!

Hey Buzz crew, I was listening to episode #1117 and your discussion
about non-standard printer drivers and I think the reason why they are
universally terrible is that HP, Canon etc. want to be able to sell
you more ink cartridges. Normally when the proprietary software says
the ink has run out, there is still actually plenty of ink left. They
just want to be able to continue to sell as many ink cartridges as
possible. I think this is why Microsoft never was able to get them to
adopt a universal standard and Google is going to have a very
difficult time trying to do the same.

Love the show,

Turns out when we blew up the moon a few weeks ago, we found water! Yay! The bottled water companies are presumably planning their trips now. THIS is how we motivate us to get back to the moon! We also hear more from old man Murdoch on blocking Google from indexing his newspapers, and Dell launches a smartphone. Does anybody want it?

Hey guys,

I’m sobered up now, and the bet about Project Natal is most definitely
on. Um… the thing is, I only intended to make a bet against any
buzz host, not every host. It’s possible that I wasn’t exactly clear
about that (I can’t imagine why) but I’m not sure I can justify
shelling out for 3 or 4 of them, and if I win, then the hassle of ebay
or craigslisting the extras ones doesn’t exactly smell of victory.

So since Natali was the first one to accept, then this is my digital
handshake. If Project Natal is available at retail on or before
November 30th, 2010, I will buy one for her. If it’s not, then she
will have to buy one for me. I only ask that you all autograph the
box for me (I promise not to sell it!). If Natali decides to back
out, then the offer is still on the table for anyone else.

Hi Buzz crew, Matt from MN.
So whats the difference between what the MPAA is doing to a town and what Microsoft is doing to XBox Live users. There was no judicial oversight in either case.
Does this mean that Apple could claim an user violated the EULA on a jailbroken iPhone and then take away their right to use Apple's OS on their phone?

Hey Buzz Crew -
I am an Apple stock holder (albeit a fairly small investor - but an investor nonetheless) and I am starting to give a second thought to the whole Psystar lawsuit with Apple. Since they are going about legally purchasing licenses and using them to install on other machines, does Apple really have a case against them or not? I'm concerned that if Apple does not win this suit, this will open the floodgates HUGE to making all types of Hackintosh-style computers, thus taking a potentially huge portion of the market away from them and would begin the decline of Apple stock. I know that Apple is more than just an operating system but still…Thoughts? Should I be afraid that Apple might not be able to defend against this?

Thanks guys!

Rafe wonders what could possibly go wrong with Comcast monitoring its users to protect them from malware. In the process, Rafe makes a few comments that have us wondering whether he'll return home to any Internet service at all. Barnes and Noble is rumored to be rolling out an Android e-book reader, while Steve Ballmer claims that the PC is the best e-book reader.

Hi Buzzfolk,

I beg to differ with the slow Windows 7 boot times story you reported on in Episode 1080. I have run a script (on the RTM 32-bit version) that measures the time, from shutdown to usable desktop, multiple times and consistently get a time of 54 seconds, which does jive with the times your lab got in their testing, but not what Lolo Technologies achieved in theirs.

I think the bigger story here is why is Lolo getting slower times?

I’m not saying it’s because they sell PC tune-up software and may have a conflict of interest, I’m just sayin`…..

Thanks! Love the show.

Tom,

In BOL 1075, you and Rafe were discussing props in sci-fi movies. This reminded me of my favorite recent example.

During a forced rewatching of Phantom Menace, I noticed something oddly familiar about Liam Neeson’s little communicator thingie. On closer look, it was clearly my wife’s Gillette Ladies Sensor Excell Razor Handle (which I see on the shower shelf every day) painted silver with a couple nub antennae stuck on the top.

http://www.partsofsw.com/Ep_1/quicom.htm

I suspect Buzztown can come up with dozens of even better examples.

Please read this e-mail on the show so the facebook guys at least know that we wanna go back, cause we people tried ( http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=129521886143&topic=13597 ) but its been a week but no-one from facebook replied or gave us the option to revert back

Hi Buzz Crew,

You are making so much fun of the idea of Windows 7 installation parties. Well actually... this kind of parties are VERY popular and called: install fest (just type into Google). What you will see is a LOT of Linux install fest parties :) Microsoft communities also organize install fests. Usually they take place in some bar/pub where you sit with a bunch of geek friends and install a new release of some product. And after that you sum up the finished installations, unfinished once, also there are some disasters like a burned laptop etc. ;)
So to finish this email - the idea is not new, not only MS does it but a lot of user communities :)

There is 1 major catch, it is only available to iWireless customers (the local T Mobile carrier), the 2 other major area cell carriers are still working on it. (USCellular & Sprint)

The dispatchers were given booklets with common text messaging accronyms, it makes for some interesting reading (They are not giving out the booklet to the public yet, because it contains some dirty words in it). Links below for more info.

Hi Buzz Crew,

My 2 cents on the ON2 Acquisition by Google -

ON2 is already a component in Adobe Flash (you mentioned in the show
flash video as an alternative but actually Flash video supports ON2)
so it might be that Google is closing on Microsoft that also own their
proprietary video codecs.

Another thing is that ON2 is also used with Skype & ooVoo for video
conferencing (I actually selected this codec for ooVoo over H.264 when
I worked there) both use ON2’s technology as their video Codec – as it
is superior for video conferencing over the internet where low
latency, low complexity and high quality are strong requirement (this
is very different than a codec for store media where compression
doesn’t have to happen in real-time.

BTW: I wonder if this has to do with Google wanting to acquire skype?
didn’t you guys talk about there rumors about that a while ago? it
might also replace the use of the current technology video Codec
Google uses for their chat which is currently “Vidyo”.

Buzz crew,
I wanted to comment on the story about The United States Marine Corps
banning social networks. The ban is on accessing social networking
sites on government computers connected to the Marine Corps
Enterprise Network. The use of facebook, myspace, and even web based
email has been blocked for many years on the network. Government
computers and internet access are used for research and other
resources, but were never intended to be personal communication and
entertainment devices for individuals.

Marines can still use their personal computers and commercial
internet access in their residence. Services, such as the USO, offer
WiFi access and computers for service members to use in many areas
overseas. I can’t speak in any official capacity, but this
administrative message appears to be simply taking an action that we
already practice and making it policy.

I’ve been in the Marine Corps for 18 years, listened to Buzz Out Loud
since THE BEGINNING, and watched Natali’s shows since Textra. You are

Hey folks,

I imagine Dr. Karl is also weighing in, but here are my 2 cents (CAD which is almost 2 cents USD....) Growing new neurons to fix this pathway would be exceedingly difficult in the brain, as the brain is part of the central nervous system, and new neuronal growth is inhibited in the CNS by a chemical called NOGO (and about a zillion other processes).

If we could do this (and new CNS growth is not that far away to help spinal injury patients etc) we would have no guarantee that the new pathway would work like it would in a normal population (I am using the word 'normal' in a statistical sense here). You see, you need the nature and the nurture to interact. Indeed, the nature nurture argument is a very simplistic way to look at things. As Donald Hebb (one of the founders of cognitive neuroscience) said "trying to determine how much of a characteristic is due to genes and how much is due to the environment is like trying to determine how much of a field's area is due to its width and how much is due to its length".

Hey Buzz Hosts,
All the talk yesterday about Netflix possibly being purchased by Amazon really made me think about how Netflix is predominately a tech company and how funny it is that my grandparents have a Netflix subscription.
You see, my grandparents have never had a computer, Internet, cable, or satellite. They don't see any need for modern technology and really couldn't care less about it. That was until my family introduced them to Netflix.
My grandparents still don't have a computer, but they are in love with Netflix. They have developed their own hack to manage their que without a computer. My grandma writes down the movies she wants and calls my mother about once a week to have her add them to the Que. My grandmother manages her Que, with shipping dates, by paper and pencil. This speaks very highly of Netflix's shipping reliability as my grandmother can tell you with accuracy when her next movie will arrive without having access to her account.
I also like the set up, since I get to use the streaming feature of their account on my XBOX 360.
I've include two photos of my grandparents' "Que."
Pic #1 and Pic #2.
I thoroughly enjoy the show. Thanks for keeping my up to date on the tech world!

-Clayton from Oklahoma.

Hey BOL-
In episode 1018, you mentioned what would child between Netflix and Amazon? Its already out there: RokuPlayer. After all, they both joined forces to get more content and even cross promote each other to sell more boxes. I even have an account with both and just got a RokuPlayer. Maybe they could iron out more included content if Amazon does buy them, but I enjoy what they both currently offer on the RokuPlayer.

The Risky Business podcast has the presentation of the security researchers (hilarious, actually), and an interview with them, both discussing the 2 keystroke capture techniques you talked about on the show. There are a few points that will get missed by mainstream reporting because these are corporate security researchers, not end-user security researchers.

1) An attacher who wants to use either of these method is going to choose a valuable target that meets the functionality of the attack. E.g., many, many ATMs use the PS2 keyboard interfaces required by the electrical fluctuation attack, making this a perfect exploit to capture pin #s. Niether attack is presented as a possible for use against individuals at home or in coffee shops.

2) The point is that sensors, such as those used to detect small electrical fluctuations and physical vibrations, are becoming cheaper and more sensitive every day, and these and other methods will be more and more viable proportionally.

On today's Buzz Out Loud, Natali and Molly form a new Amazonian society in advance of the development of artificial sperm. But in much more important news, Google is finally building the thin-client, Netbook-friendly operating system that Molly predicted back in 2005. And poor Yahoo is stuck in 2005: it just announced Search Pad. Aw. Poor Yahoo.

During your discussion of Google Chrome OS today, I am curious as to what impact, if any, GCOS might also have on older PCs. Since GCOS is already targeted at low-powered Netbooks, it stands to reason GCOS might also breathe some extra life into that 5-year-old laptop you were thinking of ditching. By moving a lot of the processing power from your lap to the cloud, could an unintended consequence be a reprieve on hardware's life cycle? Certainly Google wouldn't complain.

Dear Buzz Crew:
I'm OK guys, and today angry, no not they way you might think, I'm angry on the company I love the most and I have spent thousand of dollars buying their products, and loving them, yes, I'm talking to you Nokia.
As you can see on the article below Nokia has sold a monitoring application to Iran's Telecom, for monitoring calls, sms, mms, and internet usage.

http://www.mobile-review.com/fullnews/main/index_eng.shtml#24832

I have read in some other articles that Nokia has said we sold that application on late 2008 and the agreement says it can be used for limited number of users, mostly for security reasons like tracking and finding spy or anything like that, but the Iranian government is using it to monitor everyone's phone, and this is against Nokia's agreement and term of use and Nokia is going to sue Iran's government.
But who knows?
Have a great day

Best Regards

It seems to me and to many others who listen to the show that Natali Del Conte is quick to stereotype and judge all those who live between the two coasts of the United States. She has made disparaging remarks about the southern states, rural areas and, most recently, even the viewers of ‘The Family Guy’. I don’t watch the show and I have no idea what the target demographic is, but she implied that they would be the most likely to still have analog TVs, a condition that seems to be a mark of shame in her world. Not only is this assumption probably wrong, it is what Christopher Hitchens calls poor comedy: “jokes that
only stupid people laugh at”.

Furthermore, I can’t help but think that Natali’s cute face and ability to turn her head to the right angle for a photograph is the only reason she has a job in tech journalism. I’m sure her looks have granted her many a door opening that would otherwise have been closed. Who’s judging now? You know what it’s like, Natali. I don’t expect this to be read on the air, but that is your decision.
I continue to listen to the show and except for the occasional inane
comment, I enjoy it immensely. Thank you.

Hey Buzz Crew,

Regarding Vicente’s email in episode 941 and previous emails about the E74 error. I can, in fact, confirm that there is not conspiracy that the E74 error and RRoD are the same error that was just changed in the NXE update. You see, I have had BOTH errors in my short 2 years of owning an XBox 360. I got the E74 error last year and then, about 2 days after updating to NXE, I got the RRoD. Thankfully, I got then in that order so that it was covered by my regular warrantee for E74 and the extended RRoD warrantee later.

Love the show,

…love the show!

Hey Buzz crew,

I was watching the (unintentionally) funny 60minutes “The INterwbehszor iz ze inFECTED”
episode and like many other finns (tho I live in Sweden) noticed the “hacker hunters” lack
of knowledge about his “enemy”.

At about 10:46 of this video: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=4901282n
They show a picture of what they claim is a russian hacker group and even point to one
saying this guy is called Tempest etc.

Little does he know he has just been pwned by a Finnish internet joke and that the picture
is about 5 years old.

This picture was originally used as part of an internet joke called Isän Maan Puollustajat:
http://www.pelulamu.net/viznut/web/isanmaa/
Basicly the picture was taken from IRC-Galleria (http://irc-galleria.net/index.php) and then
added to a page with a lot of badly writen neo-nazi huff and buff and has been online for
at least 5 years. The guys in the picture were neo-nazis, but have apparently given that
up once they grew up.

As a funny coincidence the name Tempest is the name of a finnish demoscener whose
work was stolen by Timbaland (judge yourself based on the evidence, I believe it tho,
Timbaland is a waste of air if you ask me), the same guy who came up with the joke was
also collecting material for Tempest vs. Timbaland: http://www.pelulamu.net/timbaland/

So, maybe CBS should do a bit more fact checking on who they have on as their “experts”.
There is a lot of Finns laughing at 60minutes right now and this “news” is actually been
picked up by a lot of the mainstream media as well.

Just thought I let you know, maybe you at least get a good laugh out of it, I know finland has :)

Love the show as they all seem to say.
