I’m one of those very few users that have a smart phone (AT&T Tilt) without a data plan. I want the phone for other purposes that do not require the plan. I bought it used and I am not under contract. Is it your understanding that they will force ME to add a data plan, even though I’m not under contract?

By the way, within a few minutes of moving your SIM card to another phone, the AT&T website will change to show that your phone is the one into which you have installed the SIM card. My family has been “swapping” phones around a little bit lately and I was amazed at how fast they detected the change.

I ran across this site http://www.listenerdrivenradio.com/ and
thought I'd pass it on to you guys. The concept is that listeners
interact directly with the radio stations automation system to play
the songs people want to hear. It brings crowdsourcing to radio. Being
a radio engineer this was of interest to me. The system covers the big
name social media outlets and adds a website widget that can be posted
on any website, even text messaging when your favorite songs come on
the air. They even boast an iphone app that lets people vote on the
next song to be played and listen to an audio stream on the iphone.
Anyway keep up the good work.

Hey buzz crew,

I have an opinion on why some companies might not want to show off their prototypes and early demo models. In projects that I have worked on in the past we have used additional debug tools and command line execution in test releases. It seems possible that marketing would get a hold of a product with similar implementations.

If this is the case they wouldn’t want the slower response time to be documented. It is also possible they wouldn’t want reviewers to accidentally tap a debug button, or a button they know darn well that either doesn’t work or will crash the device.

Hey buzz crew, now this may not seem relevant to the podcast but I’ve been noticing recently since I’ve started experimenting with garage band how common it is for podcasts to use garage band song samples (if that’s even what you call them). I started listening to a few of them and was like “oh that’s the buzz out loud theme” and then “oh that’s the hotspot theme”. So why is this; is it because these samples are cheaper or better?

Seems to me the interest is fading. Sony may have really screwed up on this format, just like every other format they've come up with.

Dear Buzz Crew,

I have to comment on the gaze-tracking privacy software discussed in
Wednesday's episode 1014. Tom was absolutely correct that it shows
normal text to the authorized user and gibberish to everyone else.
(At least for the high-end product Chameleon; the consumer product
PrivateEye just obscures the whole screen.) I guess not everyone has
taken a visual perception class, so I'll try to explain.

We have the intuitive impression that our eyes behave like cameras –
constantly reading in all the pixels, and smoothly panning around from
object to object. Not so at all! Half of your visual cortex is
devoted to the central two degrees of your visual field. That works
out to half an inch of good focus area at a standard reading distance
of 14 inches. Moreover, your eyes constantly jump around in
incredibly fast, involuntary movements called saccades, only pausing
for about 200 milliseconds at a time. During the saccades, visual
input is suppressed. With decent gaze-tracking equipment (such as
from you local college's cognitive psychology department), you can
flash up pictures of penguins during saccades, and the user won't
notice anything odd.

And yes, your eyes still jump around even when you're reading a
structured text document. Chameleon just fills everything except the
tiny, fluctuating area you're looking at with random text.

The discussion of metric is interesting to me as we changed over here in Canada when I was in grade 4 or so. Now, what happened to those of us in this generation is that we know an odd mish mash of units. Temperatures outside, well that is in Celsius, but when I cook I use Imperial measures, including temperature. The temperature of my parents' pool, I still do that in F. Distances and speeds while driving, km and km/h are fine, distances to object, metres are great, but when I measure to say repair something in the house, I use inches. Oh and I am 6 foot 1 inch tall, and weigh about 175 lb, I have no idea what my height or weight is in metric. (I could convert of course, but I don't).

I am just confused.... My 15 year old daughter on the other hand, does everything in metric, no problem.

This will be my first “well actually” but as a mechanical engineer I
thought it worth pointing out that converting between units on a
complicated platform like the space shuttle is probably a bit more
complex than entering a few searches in google. Unfortunately, you
can’t just replace every 1/4″-20 x 1″ socket head cap screw with a
M6.35-1.27 x 25.4 screw. For one, the hardware doesn’t exist, and two,
the nomenclatures are different. You would actually have to reengineer
quite a bit to make a functioning system using only metric units.

It may be the bane of every freshman engineering student in the US,
but mixed units are the current reality.

Bought the ‘77 new, my 1st new car ever. Loved the ‘69 and cussed the

As you can see on the article below Nokia has sold a monitoring application to Iran's Telecom, for monitoring calls, sms, mms, and internet usage.

I have read in some other articles that Nokia has said we sold that application on late 2008 and the agreement says it can be used for limited number of users, mostly for security reasons like tracking and finding spy or anything like that, but the Iranian government is using it to monitor everyone's phone, and this is against Nokia's agreement and term of use and Nokia is going to sue Iran's government.
But who knows?

This is a very interesting news story about the British top 40
singles, which has for many years only been based on record sales but
now they're thinking about including last.fm streams in their stats.
This is very good as it all those sites are really popular here.

What is more interesting is the stats halfway through the story about
single sales, that have gone up in the UK from 30 million in 2003 to
over 115 million in 2008. That is a fivefold increase. How dare the music
labels say they are losing money when this is the case. If anything
it shows that people are more interested than ever in music.

I was driving around town today, doing errands and listening to Buzz Out Loud. When I heard about Bozeman job services requesting applicants to provide username and passwords for social networking sites, I was totally in denial. Molly, Tom and Jason talking about Bozeman, MT? How could this be? Afterall, Bozeman is no Silicon Valley.

As a current resident of Bozeman, I am glad to hear about my town on BOL, but the story does not put Bozeman in the best possible light. Good thing that they rescinded this policy. Please make sure the Buzz town is aware of this and this can somehow clear Bozeman’s name a bit. Bozeman is a great little town (hmm, the smallest city I’ve ever lived in, but the fifth largest city in MT) with great nature resources all around it and hope you all have a chance to come and visit this area. It is beautiful out here!

When is episode 2000? Approximately Thursday, June 13th, 2013. [It's the second Thursday of June - gonna have to bump it back a bit]

So how’d I get that? First, I wrote a little script that would go through the months and count the number of weekdays for me. This gave me a nice estimate of how many BOLs there’d be. But it didn’t take into consideration the holidays. So I Googled a holiday list and came up with http://www.opm.gov/Operating_Status_Schedules/fedhol/2009.asp and added those to the spreadsheet, too. I had the spreadsheet do the math for me to remove them and then run a count for me.

I did the last bit by hand, knowing that the last episode of May 2013 would be #1991, I counted into 2000 by hand.

You have mentioned this story previously – thank you for that as I
have been the person publicizing it – but the telephone incumbent TDS
just lost its last opportunity to appeal at the Supreme Court. A full
2 days before the city would have lost the investor money (they had
one year from the lawsuit start), the Supreme Court declined to review
the Appeals Court judgment. The City is now moving forward with its
all fiber network.

Hey guys, just thought I’d make you aware of plans in the uk to pay
for faster broadband in the long run by charging 50p per month ontop
of our landline bills. Currently in Britain the majority of people
have a landline with a line rental payable to ‘British Telecoms’ even
if you have another provider, so a £10 per month phone package starts
to cost £20. And with the prices of mobile Internet, mobile calls and
voip services (especially being free on mobile carrier ‘Three’)
becoming more popular and cheaper it is conceivable that the only
people paying for this upgrade are going to be the ones that aren’t
actually going to require it, namely the older technophobics who will
never ditch their landline and never been online. Anyway just though
I’d let you know what was going on this side of the Atlantic. Have a

Hi Buzz Crew,

Let me cut to the chase. I heard on last Friday’s episode that this 1,000th Buzz Out Loud Podcast is going to be “longer.” How much longer will it be?

As much as I enjoy listening to the daily audio podcast, a longer one is not going to work for me. If the 1,000 episode was two months ago I would have jumped for joy (I “used to” listen at work). Recently, I’ve made a deal with myself (and my wife-to-be) that leading up to our wedding, I would go to the gym in an effort to be healthier (not as fat). I begin and end my routine with Buzz Out Loud. I press “play” on my 2nd gen ipod (I know I’m behind the times) to begin my work out, and I and end it the second the closing music finishes. If I’m in the middle of a set, it doesn’t matter, I stop and I leave. You see, I HATE the BORING gym. It’s the bane of my existence.

So that said, you will KILL ME if I have to work out for an hour and a half, or god forbid, two hours. I promise I will curse your names down to the last email, caller, or heaven help us, horrible Opera reference…

Speaking of Opera, Can someone please tell me why our country is so ridiculous that a company, such as Microsoft, can’t include or make their software the “default” browser within…well…. their software? What happened to a little elbow grease? If you have a browser “Opera” and you think you should have the right to be on someone’s machine, do what every company on the planet has done to gain market-share. “Do a little advertising. Make a better product. Creatively distribute it.” Perhaps that will help you get your product to the masses & gain some name recognition. I don’t recall firefox ever having a pity-party. I don’t hear them running to big brother, crying “It’s not fair! It’s too hard for me to get into the game.” Grow up, learn to hit, and then maybe you’ll get to play. Why does everyone think they deserve a trophy?

One again this is Siavash, from Tehran/Iran. As you may know from the news there a revolution going on in Iran, after the changes in votes by Iran's government, people are on the street every day and night.
We have no access to technology at all, all the mobile services and SMS,MMS and EDGE services are down, Facebook, YouTube and many other sites have been filtered, most of the time there is no internet connection with ADSL lines and a very powerful noise in satellite services, because of these problems I was not able to send you the videos I made for 1000 episode of BOL, know I'm using a 2way satellite service which has a very low bandwidth because of the noise, and I'm not able to download or stream BOL anymore.

Just wanted to say congratulations to all you guys for making this 1000 episode happen, I've enjoyed every minute of the show since the episode 50 or 60 that I started listening, and I have to say you guys are the best in tech field.

I hope there will be a day that we could have proper internet access and I could join you guys again.

Just wanted to pass on an idea on getting subsidized iphone upgrades annually, instead of every 2 years. My friend does this and it’s so simple. I can’t believe no one else has sent this in. All he did was add a second line to his account for 9.99 per month. The second line shares minutes, has no extras, no texting, nothing. Just the cheapest 2nd line plan you can get. Now he can upgrade either line and have the AT&T store switch phone numbers on each line everytime he upgrades. If you want to get the new iphone each year, it might be work 120 bucks per year to have the luxury of upgrading yearly at the subsidized price.

In epised 994 you discussed maps for the iPhone and the possibility of TomTom using Open Street Maps. TomTom bought TeleAtlas a year or two ago, so it’s doughtful they can lower their cost with open source maps.
