There's a little panic over the fact that Bing's market share dropped last month, but you have to remember, folks, Bing is young. Rafe puts it in perspective for us. Also, Kindle gets a price cut and goes worldwide, yo. That's big. What is also big is the keylogger network that's hijacking everyone's Web mail accounts. We can help you out with that, a bit.

Hey Buzz-Crew,
In ep 1077 you asked for a CIO/CTO to weigh in on the IBM Inotes vs Goolge Docs hypothetical prize fight for our hypothetical business. While I am not of that stature at my company I do sit right outside the out CIO’s office so I wrestled him down, duct taped him to his chair and made him answer this very question!
Okay, well not really that first part but he did answer and here is what he said:
“We actually looked at Google Docs for cost reduction and there is no way we could use it. With all the customer data that we have and the nature of our business (not to mention internal systems) having something in the cloud would be much to risky. Cloud stuff just isn’t reliable enough for us to even consider using it. Not only that but there was no way that Legal would let us (not to mention that it didn’t clear SOX compliance). And let us not forget about our ‘wonderful’ users. The learning curve that they would have to deal with might just break them.”
So there you have it. The argument against clouds at my company are (1) Reliability, (2) Legal / SOX issues and (3) Inept users.
Love the show,

Hey, Buzz crew,
With all the discussion about mobile OS platforms and developers in
yesterday’s show (episode 1078), I’m surprised you didn’t mention the
announcement Adobe made on Monday about how they’re going to enable
Flash developers to code apps in Flash that can then be converted into
native iPhone apps. Technical merits aside, it’s an interesting move by
Adobe to keep Flash application and game developers from abandoning
Flash to take a swing at developing apps solely for the iPhone, and you
have to wonder if Apple is somewhat annoyed that five iPhone apps
created with this technique made it into the app store.

Hey Buzz Crew,
I am listening to Episode 1076, (I’m a bit behind) and upon hearing Tom’s dreams of “Tenspeed and Brownshoe” being streamed online, I ran over to Google to find out what in the world he was talking about. So of course, I wound up at IMDB reading up on the subject, how mundane right? Why would I be emailing to tell you this? Well, I noticed at the top of their page, a popularity ranking, and had to laugh when I saw that the popularity of the series went up 34% this week. Glad I wasn’t the only one left wondering “wtf?” after that comment!
Love the show!

Hey guys,
I’m a couple episodes behind, so you may have already talked about this but: things just got real with Palm http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/05/palm-throws-the-doors-open-review-free-app-distribution-over-th/
What better way to compete with the iTunes app store than to lower the barrier of entry for open source apps and decentralize the distribution of free apps.

Molly,
In previous shows you talked about how all of the wires from wall mounted TVs and home theater components would negate the benefit of wall-mounting them. Check out this Switched.com article about flat HDMI cables that you can put on the wall and paint over. I think flat paintable speaker cables have been around for a decade or so. Now all we need are flat power cables that can carry more than 1kW of power and we’ll be set.

Until it comes out, though, it's basking in the warm glow of the "meeting and maybe exceeding expectations" judgments coming from the media. In sum, it sounds cool. And Google decides it's high time they made some money on that whole YouTube thing.

I was listening to episode 825 driving into work at IBM’s advanced semiconductor design and manufacturing facility in East Fishkill, N.Y., [http://www-03.ibm.com/technology/] and reflecting on the cool stuff we’ve been working on in the last year or two. The PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii chips, High K metal gate [http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/04/15/2027239], airgap [http://www.eetimes.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=199203911], high end chips for IBM servers, etc.
Then at 1:30 into the episode I hear Tom tell me that Intel is the only chip design/manufacturer of note left now that AMD is out of the fab business. Ouch!

Thin-film solar cells + Origami = compact energy solution?
I’ve been hearing/reading more about thin-film solar cells and I think it’s great stuff--check out a couple articles:
http://blog.wired.com/wiredscience/2008/10/thin-film-solar.html
http://www.nytimes.com/external/gigaom/2008/10/07/07gigaom-konarka-turns-on-1gw-thin-film-solar-printing-pre-11260.html
But then, I thought about this really interesting video about using origami for engineering/packaging efforts:
http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/robert_lang_folds_way_new_origami.html
So…put them together and you’ve probably got a way to have a back packable solar cell that might cover a 10 person tent! Or a sail, umbrella, etc.
—–
Other misc questions I have on solar energy:
My big question about solar is the amount of energy used to create the cells, materials needed (and their cost to obtain), and how long these solar cells will last. Can solar cells be reused/recycled? Can they be biodegradable? Is Solar thermal (think Sterling engine) the better way to harness the solar energy? What about UV light energy--any way to convert that?

thoughts?

Shalin
JaMoTo,
For the sake of some privacy, please don’t use my name or e-mail address…just call me a “Comm-dude at Air Force Space Command.”
Want some cool news about Cyber…see 2/3 way down in msg below. While the AF is not standing up a separate Major Command, we are standing up an organization known as a Numbered Air Force for Cyber — wooohooo.
AF leaders met last week (for CORONA) and decided to establish a Numbered Air Force for cyber operations within Air Force Space Command and discussed how the Air Force will continue to develop capabilities in this new domain and train personnel to execute this new mission. This will be 24th AF.
“The conduct of cyber operations is a complex issue, as DoD and other interagency partners have substantial equity in the cyber arena,” said Mr. Donley. “We will continue to do our part to increase Air Force cyber capabilities and institutionalize our cyber mission.”
Locations for the new nuclear command and cyber NAF were not addressed and require further deliberation.
Other key AF issues discussed include an update on the status of joint basing initiatives, the development of a common Logistics Standardization Evaluation Program, and review of the concept of integrating the networks used to repair the Air Force’s weapon systems.

Howdy Y'all,
Just while you're all bust ranting about how great it is that all products going forward will need to have removable batteries, (while is great I know) but what about things like Bluetooth headsets, those disposable electric toothbrushes (http://www.oralb.com/us/products/manual/pulsar/)
I know this might seems like silliness, but I'm still holding out for the Bluetooth earbuds aren't the same size as a small dog.

This weekend, I received a promotional e-mail message from Starwood hotels, announcing free Sony BMG music downloads as part of a new partnership. After reading a long FAQs page about how I needed Windows Media Player and how they wouldn't play on my Mac, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the downloaded files were MP3s! [Using Molly's I- know-I-can't-believe-it voice:] From Sony! Presumably, DRM-free music from Sony wasn't happening until later this month, but it looks like they're already tearing down the walls. I can't believe I'm saying this, but "way to go, Sony!"

Let me be the first to encourage you and your CES-attending friends to bring your big ol' gadget fest here to Central Florida. We've got more than enough exhibit space (2.1 million square feet in the Orange County Convention Center alone) and plenty of hotel rooms to rest your weary little heads. It's certainly a different vibe here than in LV but I'm sure you can handle the culture-shock.
BTW, many of the attractions in the area parks already have sponsorships in place: Siemens has Spaceship Earth, HP has Mission Space, GM has Test Track and Volkswagen has Revenge of the Mummy at Universal Studios just to name a few, but I'm sure space could be carved out for a few more ("Men in Black" courtesy of Alienware? "The Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" brought to you by the Microsoft Vista?)
If any of y'all ever get down this way for CES or any other trade shows, drop me a line and I can get you the hookup on park tickets.
