In the U.K., you don't have to be in the presence of someone to serve them with legal papers. So now Twitter has become a way to get served. We also are happy that the U.S. government is taking cybersecurity seriously, but maybe they could lay off with the cyber prefix a little. And we try to care more about the Palm Pixi. We really do.

Tom,
In BOL 1075, you and Rafe were discussing props in sci-fi movies. This reminded me of my favorite recent example.
During a forced rewatching of Phantom Menace, I noticed something oddly familiar about Liam Neeson’s little communicator thingie. On closer look, it was clearly my wife’s Gillette Ladies Sensor Excell Razor Handle (which I see on the shower shelf every day) painted silver with a couple nub antennae stuck on the top.

I suspect Buzztown can come up with dozens of even better examples.

Hi! I’m Tushar, from Ludhiana, India and probably the only listener in the town!!!
A couple of days ago When I checked in my facebook page, I was redirected to their lite.facebook.com page
and the cool thing was that I couldn’t revert back to the normal page!!!
On doing some research I came to know that it was a problem with a couple other users back here in India where facebook randomly picked them as their beta testers for lite.facebook.com but we all CANNOT go back to the normal facebook!!!!
Please read this e-mail on the show so the facebook guys at least know that we wanna go back, cause we people tried ( http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=129521886143&topic=13597 ) but its been a week but no-one from facebook replied or gave us the option to revert back
P.S. – facebook lite is cool for some users who do not want any clutter but it should not be mandatory for all!!!

Hi Guys,
I just wanted to show you guys my Buzz Out Loud OS X Dashboard Widget. It’s simple, but it’s great for listening to BOL streaming without opening [another] tab or iTunes. It’s called BOL Dash (Buzz Out Loud For OS X Dashboard… obvious). It comes in two versions, BOL Dash and my personal favorite, BOL Dash Mini which is the same as BOL Dash but it takes up less space on your dashboard. You can find them here: http://dashbol.weebly.com/ I know it’s not a great site but I made it fast to host the widgets. They are completely free so I’d love it if you would mention them on your show or better yet, put it on the BOL blog page.
Thanks,

Dear Buzz crew:
This is Siavash from Iran, remember my updates from Iran? Here is a new one and a very hot one.
Yesterday, my cousins phone rang and there was a private number, she picked it up and a man said, you have been updating your Facebook and sending emails about what was going on inside Iran, mentioning her name, her husband and her children, he said if you don't stop sending emails and Facebook updates and pictures about Iran's political and election issues we will arrest you and your husband and your child.
So I searched so much to find out what is going one, and it seems they have been able to access passwords of those using Gmail, hotmail and Yahoo mail, so they could check their mails and ... , but they could not find any Facebook passwords and any other personal host and domain names like the mail address I use.
So, my question is, why? Why Yahoo, Hotmail and Gmail are giving out passwords to Iran's government and department of security? They are not supposed to, passwords are very confidential information and they should not betray people who trust these services. There is nothing mentioned in terms of agreement when you want to open an email account on any of these site and they promise you to keep it safe and protected? Ouh REALLY?
PS: I'm a security geek and I'm sure they can not track my emails , so be sure, I'm safe.
Best Regards
Siavash

Hey Buzz Crew,
Regarding your discussion of lithium polymer batteries (lipos for
short) in episode 1015, they are not immune to exploding.
Lipos are a common power source in electric powered radio controlled
models, particularly RC helicopters, due to their high energy-to-
weight ratio. If they are compromised, they can spontaneously combust.
Also, if the cells are overcharged, they can outgas, causing a
condition called puffing, and can explode if charging is taken to an
extreme. Special cell-balancing chargers are typically used to avoid
overcharging battery packs consisting of series-connected cells.
This doesn't instill my confidence in lipos as a power source in cars,
particularly if you're in a crash.
Love the show.

Dear Buzz people,
I’m sure you’ve heard about the Pirate Bay trial’s judge and his alleged ties to the recording industry, but I wonder if you’ve heard about this and what you think of it: http://www.thepirategoogle.com/
Not only is the idea very amusing, but its simplicity illustrates something that we tech fiends have known for a while: Google is sort of a Pirate Bay too.
Which makes it easier to ask the question: “Would the RIAA ever take on Google and ask them to filter the Internet?”
(It does seem like too big an idiocy to even formulate, but maybe we shouldn’t underestimate the ability of the copyright lobby to shoot themselves in the foot. Indeed, if too many torrent sites started closing, new tools far more sophisticated than this one would surface in a matter of weeks. What would the copyrights holders say then? It’s probably too big a deal for anyone to have a chance of wining, even the copyright lobbies. The Pirate Bay is a bunch of kids in Sweden, but Google is a whole different animal. Still, I’m not certain they would understand that.)
So let’s review: FTP turned into centralized p2p, which turned into decentralized p2p, which became individual file p2p. Each time, pressure from the RIAA pushed the system to bury itself deeper into the fabric of the Internet. Could it be that they have finally pushed it so far that they cannot do anything about it anymore?

Hi buzzers,
This old BluRay is useless and dead as a video distribution argument because of streaming is so tired and so wrong. This sounds like the argument that on deamand from the cable company is supposed to kill of DVDs. Yea, that happend. So the idea of ownership of phisical media is going to die, right? Yea and we’re going to be flying in hibrid air cars and wearing auto sizing sneakers and jackets. I have a really nice plasma tv, and BD is so much better, and no dvd is not good enough. The entire sentiment of good enough is anti progress and your podcast should be above that. And Tom’s argument that he doesnt have a PS3 because it is too expensive, is so lame. He has every single player box, worth a lot more than a PS3. He buys more tech than me, and thats saying something, so dont give me the too expensive crap.

Hey Tom, Natali, Jason, random(GuestHost),
I am one of those individuals that does not yet have access to
Google ‘Me’. Based on your discussion of the offering yesterday, I have
a question: what is to stop a malicious person from potentially creating
false profiles for individuals, filled with less-than-genuine
information. It seems like I could create a false Google account under
the name ‘Tom Merritt’, then write all sorts of bad stuff about Tom,
which result in people thinking he’s a jerk or something (not that I’m
going to do that), and how then, would the real Tom Merritt combat this
doppelganger?
Sincerely,
Chris the Bioinformatician from Calgary
P.S. I realize that the above scenario can be played out on other social
networks as well, but somehow having this information popping up in
Google seems like the kind of place where authenticity would be more
important than say, Facebook.
Scientists have simulated a part of the brain, molecule by molecule, and may possibly be able to simulate an entire brain soon. This has Natali excited, because she anticipates being able to download martial arts into her brain. Jason just doesn't want to meet another one of himself. Did you get that Android chaser jingle done?
According to The Inquirer (which I hope is reliable as I’ve never heard of it) a Chinese company called SkyTone has released the first netbook powered by Android. It has a 7 inch swivelling touchscreen with gamepad controls on the sides, wifi, 3G(!), SD card reader, a webcam and 2 USB ports as well as 128mb of RAM and a 533MHZ ARM processor. And what’s especially good in these troubled times (drink) is it’s price: $100. To me that speaks volumes for the quality of the components but its low enough to be in the impulse-buy realm so I’d certainly fork out for one!

Hi Buzzers or buzzcrew or the slightly forgotten Jatona
Tomorrow it is the time for a new OS to hit the “shelves” - Ubuntu 9.04. Probably you got more than me reminding you of this - but since there is certainly strength in numbers, I will not hesitate to point you towards this, rather important, news.
A story from my world. I am CEO of a global company with offices in Denmark, Vietnam and Egypt. I have quite a number of staff doing production of elearning for us - and I am now moving them all to Ubuntu. No more licences, old copies and so on. Simply Open Source through and through (with the only possible exception being video-editing, since that is truly the world of proprietary formats). In my view we are ready now. With the combination of using Google Apps for Business for our email, systems like Dropbox and Google Docs for sharing and Ubuntu as OS we can actually run global corporations on open platforms and free services. Yes - we have to be aware of the dangers. Google could go chapter 11(!?!) - Google could turn evil(?) - Dropbox could close (ok that is possible). But as long as you are prepared for this - and take precautions for the risks, I do not really see why there is a need for corporate infrastructures when talking sub-100 people companies.
So - Go Ubuntu! I have been running 9.04 since beta - and has produces several projects for clients on the platform. It crashes a lot less than my Vista, which it dual-boots with. My main reasons for still having Windows is videoediting - and iTunes, so I can sync my iPhone and listen to Buzz Out Loud on my daily 1 hour commute.
Love the show

Luv the show and keep up the work. I'm a Systems Engineer and I work at Lockheed Martin. I worked on the JSF program many years ago when the program was in its infancy.
As you all may know... there are different tiers of security classification with respective networks. My speculation is that data siphoned off were DRs (Design Reviews) Presentations, SRR (System Requirement Reviews) and other set of data used to present & discuss planning and design with the stakeholders (i.e. Pentagon). These presentations talk about design, but at a high level, which in my opinion, any smart person can figure out just by using the internet. For example, you can find a high level design of the aircraft on wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F35#Design )
I'm guessing that NIPRNet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NIPRNet) was compromised over the durations of the attacks, while the more sensitive network, SIPRNet (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIPRNET ) remained secure.
It's not impossible, but I can't even imagine detailed drawings and assembly instructions to reside on any Pentagon server or pc. That design detailed is so low level, that it would probably annoy anyone who doesn't directly work on the aircraft. Usually that stuff is stored on the contractors (The Lockheeds & Boeings) secured network on some obscure and super secured server.
I would like to also add the F35 will be sold to other nations, which tells me that there are design specs that are traded with minimal sensitivity, i.e. if the data is compromised, there would be little or no repercussions. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F35#International_participation )
In summary, I'm not too concerned with data that was compromised at the Pentagon, because a lot of design is already available on the internet

Molly,
In previous shows you talked about how all of the wires from wall mounted TVs and home theater components would negate the benefit of wall-mounting them. Check out this Switched.com article about flat HDMI cables that you can put on the wall and paint over. I think flat paintable speaker cables have been around for a decade or so. Now all we need are flat power cables that can carry more than 1kW of power and we’ll be set.

Hey Guys-
My friend, who livecasts his life, but does NOT torrent/etc is
getting shut off by Comcast, and has no other way to get Internet
other than 1.5/256 att DSL. Comcast is effectively disconnecting him
from the net…
So it WILL hurt people who don’t just torrent…

to my dearest buzz crew,
HOLLARRRRRRR!
As i was strolling the interwebz i came across this little article via ap. It basically states you live on an island and blog each week about your experiences. i thought to myself as i sip my coffee & baileys out of my cnet mug “hot damn this is the job for me”, but i quickly realized who really wants to sit back on the white sands in the warm sun sipping your fruity cocktail right outside of your own private villia blogging away? yep i do too!

Note: We are making a change to our podcast feed system on Friday, May 16. However, you do not need to subscribe to a new feed. One important thing to know: If you have your podcast catcher set to download "all unheard episodes" in a feed, you will probably find a bunch of already heard episodes in your feed on Friday as a result of the changes. To lighten the hit, set your podcast catcher to only download "the latest episode" for the week of May 19-to-23.

Genesis of the drug printer
In episode 722 you discussed the idea of printing drugs. I suggest chemical stability as a reason that such an idea could prove useful. The next wonder drug could, for example, lose its wonderful properties when exposed to oxygen (as oxygen is highly reactive). Perhaps this drug could be synthesized through the simple mixture of several, independently stable and innocuous chemicals. The mixture, however, could require a proficiency of titration not realized by the average afflicted individual. What is an inkjet printer other a highly accurate fluid dispersal and mixing device? (flash to lightbulb and corresponding Bing!).
I really do adore your shows. Keep up the terrificness.

Google does semantic search?
While listening to the show, you guys made mention of the natural language search tool, I think it was called Power Set Symantec Web. I went to Google.com and put in some natural language searches and got the same answers that you guys got when searching. The search queries were:
What is Buzz Out Loud?
Who was King Henry VIII first wife.
Both of those questions were answered correctly. Maybe I missed something, but I hope you guys can address it and clear it up for me. Love the show.

Spreading the fud
When I went to work yesterday in a call center for a telecom/Internet provider that rhymes with “horizon”, I found that copies of an article about Comcast’s proposed caps had been put on everyone’s desks, even though the middle paragraph did explain just how much content one truly gets for 250GB. I really don’t think that the majority of my co-workers really understand what they are selling on a technical level, since the training we got was really just aimed at how to sell it. All they’re going to take away from that article is “Well, ours is unlimited and theirs isn’t, so we’re better!” (Even if we can only give most of you 3Mb/768k service.)
Way to spread the FUD, “Horizon!”

Obsolete words (or soon to be)
At the end of BOL 722, when Jason was talking about changing the subscription to make sure we download latest, Tom said if you don’t understand that, rewind.
Hmm, since the podcast is digital, how does one “rewind”? Wouldn’t that term have died with the cassette/VCR tapes? Open letter to mfg: please stop putting RWD on DVD remotes. My I propose fast backward, a technology neutral term (why is there only fast forward?)
Other somewhat obsolete terms I noticed lately: clockwise/counterclockwise (who owns an analog clocks when we have computers and cell phones), light bulbs (compact fluorescent lights are not really bulbs, just twisted tubes).
Sorry for random crap like this. The cough syrup is making me loopy.

Macbook Pro trackpad bubbles?
Hey Buzz out Crew,
Maybe that’s just me, but if you think that’s a lead worth investigating:
