A new law in Europe protects all citizens from the evils of cookies. Instead of relying on people to operate their own browsers, Europe now requires all Web sites to notify users that they will set cookies. That certainly sounds annoying. Come on over to our freedom-loving U.S. sites, y'all! We also check in on Motorola Droid sales and find out that the Milestone kicks the Droid in the butt. And Google has a holiday present for you. Long time first time. I started listening when Molly was out having her baby, and I haven’t missed one episode since.
I moved back to China three months ago, and at least in Beijing, the podcast is not blocked right now. When I visited home in 2008, all cnet podcasts were blocked, but it’s no longer the case this year.
I try to get around the great firewall very sparingly, only when it’s absolutely necessary, so I know pretty well among the podcasts I subscribe to, which are blocked and which are not. As mentioned on the show, Radio Lab is blocked. So is This American Life. So is Savage Lovecast by Dan Savage. But sorry guys, BOL is not, not even after the WOW incidence.

Hey BOLers..
This is Vijay from India.. Long time BOL listener.. you guys rock..
We have been talking about Motorola DROID for long now.. but not much about its GSM/UMTS brother the MILESTONE. Now that MILESTONE has been announced in some European countries, I was waiting for it to launch in India too. I guess it will be coming soon. Initially, I was thinking that only the Radio is different from the DROID. But apparently not… Here are some of the differences
The following features are available in Milestone and not in Droid
MultiTouch in Gallery and Browser (Droid only has double tap)
Geotaging in the Gallery photos.
MotoNav (Offline turn by turn navigation maps) This does not require internet connection (say if you are in some rural areas or in San Fransisco if you are on AT&T 3G
) where as Google Navigation requires connection to internet. Google Nav is also available on the Milestone.. best of both worlds !!
Phone Portal – Very cool thing where a webserver runs on the phone !!! The phone can be accessed just like a website from any desktop browser for the gallery, bookmarks etc just like accessing any cloud service.. pretty cool
MTP Sync Media Transport Protocol sync for easy syncing of media along with meta data etc.
Mysign – Gesture based short cuts where certain functions (say calling a specific contact, or turning on wifi etc) can be made into shortcuts based on certain gestures..
I did not get a link with these differences but basically got this information from the motodev podcast.. at http://www.blogtalkradio.com/motodev/2009/11/04/Developing-Android-Applications-for-DROID-and-Mile
LOVE THE SHOW..

Hi Buzz Crew,
It’s not a given that Murdoch has to loose against Google, because it’s
not a given everybody would use Google to search for news. Imagine most of
the news coporations would opt out of Googles Index and would be searchable
on Bing, because Bing would share their revenue. People would move to Bing
- at least for search for news. Newspapers would get more revenues.
Everybody would be happy, except for Google, which would at some point be
forced to pay newspapers to add them to its index.
Otherwise, love the show!

Tom Richmond, the star caricaturist of MAD Magazine’s new generation had a project he worked on rejected by Apple. It was an app that had caricatures of all the members of Congress with their contact information. Roadable Airplanes. It makes me wonder why I listen when I hear things like that.
Of course Joe Idiot can’t fly a car, ever. That’s why they call it a “roadable airplane” instead of a flying car. It’s an airplane first, and requires a pilot’s license to fly. All of the FAA requirements for airplanes apply. And no, “black boxes” are not required.

Hey buzz crew.
On the ps3 you can download full version of some current gen games. Examples I can recall off the top of my head are grand turismo: prologue and burn out paradise. These still can be found on disc format. Xbox 360 currently has no current gen games available for full download.
I personally thought that they would expand the selection of available games if they ever did make a ps3 with no blue ray. especially since they (ps3) use standard hard drives that are easy to replace and upgrade vs the over priced xbox 360 120gig hd @ $134 dollars at amazon.
just some insight from a xbox 360 and ps3 owner.
Thanks and love the show.

Hi there
Cooley’s discussion about Nissan bringing EVs to the US in the next few years reminded me of this - basically Mitsubishi has been testing their new EV here in New Zealand for the last few months with the vehicle intended to be sold for between $30k and $40k (that’s about $15k to $20k in US currency - wasn’t $15k Tom’s limit?). You can already register your interest in the vehicle . Wikipedia notes that the vehicle should be on the market in the ‘09 to ‘10 time frame.
Cheers

Reference your discussion about Warner’s burn-to-order DVDs in episode 937:
It would be nice if you folks would keep in mind all the poor souls who still don’t have high-speed internet access. I live a mere 40 miles away from downtown San Jose, CA and dial-up is the best I can do.
There is no FiOS where I live.
There is no cable here.
I live too far from the closest phone company central office for DSL.
And satellite is a non-starter for me — price and latency issues.
So, while I might enjoy the ability to download a movie for $14.95 in a matter of seconds or minutes, I can’t, Mr. Cooley.
For someone in my situation the $19.95, burn-to-order DVD might make a great deal of sense. In fact, I wonder if a dual-layer DVD sent via the postal service might give me higher through-put than my crappy dial-up connection.

Robert M.

Hello Buzz people,
My Kindle topic is in response to the free ebooks on the Sony Reader.
For some time, there has been a pretty awesome way to download public
domain ebooks straight to the kindle over the evdo from feedbooks.com.
The way it works is you open http://www.feedbooks.com/kindleguide in
your kindle browser, which downloads the book guide that shows up in
your home menu. From the guide, you can browse the available books by
title, author, genre and popularity, and download them straight to the
kindle in mobi-pocket format. I don’t know how the selection compares
to the sony/google offering, but there are supposedly thousands of
books on feedbooks. They are of course available to other devices, but
you can’t beat the seamless evdo delivery.
The other thing I wanted to bring up, that I haven’t really heard much
about since Google started migrating GrandCentral over to Google Voice
is that they are providing a simple way to make free long-distance
calls from any of your phones (including a landline) to any phone in
the US (and reasonable rates overseas as well). You just type in the
number or your contact’s name in the little “call” box, and Google
calls your selected phone, then connects you to the person you are
calling. Take that AT&T!

Dear BOLers,
I missed you guys. I missed so much that I went to the BuzzOutLoud wikia and downloaded (randomly) some episodes from the past three years of BOLing. I got to hear the first voicemail from Shalin, the time when dr. Karl was just a med student and a lot of great stuff: Tom saying that would license for free his voice for TomTom’s GPS, Molly confusing hermetically for hydrogenation sealed and Veronica talking “Brazil for the win” were the best ones I’ve hear
And when I downloaded the best of 2006 episode, I noticed it was too short. And the same happened with the best of 2007 and 2008 episodes. So I figure a way to not let this happen again this year: a page on the wikia! http://buzzoutloud.wikia.com/wiki/Best_of_2009
Now the listeners will have a chance to put in their favorite buzzing moments of 2009 and help Jason to edit a longer (or even two!) Best of 2009 episode.
Hope you like it and, as always, love the show and keep up the good work!

Anyway hope you guys had a nice vacation.

Ever since I switched to over the air digital television, my life has been a TV horror film.
90 percent of the time the signal is so poor it cuts in and out every minute or two. If I am lucky enough to get a good signal I can’t move. Every time I or my roommate walks through the house, the signal cuts out. The resolution may be better, but of course it is, that's what happens when you shrink the picture. My screen now has a three-inch black border for most programs. It sucks! I was much happier with a little fuzzy picture and good audio, than a screen refresh rate of 1/minute and no audio, or almost worse when every actor suddenly becomes a gou’uld (not sure why that happens).
I’ve also noticed that the signal is the worst during peak viewing hours. You guys know if DTV has some type of shared bandwidth?

Jamoto,
On Buzz-Out-Loud #859 Daniel in Hell e-mailed about the EULA for the iPhone which restricted the use of the phone for, “the development design manufacture or production of various kinds of weapons”. I believe that this is due to the fact that it contains a GPS unit, which could at least theoretically be used for a targeting or timing system. I would guess that this would be a standard EULA feature of other GPS devices, but maybe just the iPhone since it can run apps and would be easier to configure for the task. I guess the option of using the phone to record and replay a Molly rant is still an unrestricted pleasure. Love the show, keep up the good work.

I’ve even written the intro in advance:
(Camera 1) Merritt: “Coming up on CNET Live: it’s that time of year again, time for 10 STRAIGHT hours of CNET Live’s Holiday Help Desk, when we ease the pains of your holiday tech shopping. Lots of reviews, lots of questions, lots of answers!”
(Camera 2) Cooley: “Plus, I’ll teach you how to roast a turkey with the Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries from a new Ford Escape hybrid! And Cars! Cars! CARS!”
(Camera 3) Me: “And I made a cape from my CNET sweatshirt! CNET Live starts now! EXCELSIOR!”
(I unfurl my cape and fly stage-left Al Gore-style. Animated exclamation points dancing on screen. Play intro sequence.)
Perfect opportunity for my Al Gore impression. You can have that for free. Unfortunately I’m not very patient with verbose callers, comfortable in front of cameras, or altogether functional before noon, but that also means I’m totally nerdcore, so feel free to give me a call. Like Cooley said, nobody’s gonna be watching this anyway, right? (Just let me know before Wednesday, because the price doubles on Thursday.)

Why I don't like indexable Flash.
Hi Guys.
Just a quick reminder--what you guys call a degradable HTML version, I, as a nonphoton--dependent person (a blind person, for those not up on the latest PC lingo I'm trying to spread) call an accessible version. Molly's sigh of relief at the prospect of not having to put up this second page was a gasp of horror for me and those of my ilk.
Screen readers do a miserable job reading Flash based pages for the very reason it's hard to index them, and without an alternate degradable version I wouldn't be able to access an increasing amount of the Interweb.
Thanks.

I still use Limewire for the quick one song downloads, and torrent my albums. Because of both the cost (free) and the higher bitrate/quality than iTunes.
Well that’s all changed now. Last night I used Amazon’s MP3 service because of its 256kb/s bitrate mp3’s mainly.
> I have a Mac so I downloaded and installed the Mac version of Amazon’s MP3 Downloader very easily. After that, and signing into my Amazon account, It’s literally a 1-click process.
You click Buy Album… less than a minute later the entire album is in my iTunes. Full of all the valid metadata and album artwork.
I will never obtain music via P2P again. Amazon’s MP3 service is cheap, reliable, high quality, and supereasy to use! Also, it comes with all the correct metadata and album art, which is important to me when I’m using my iPhone and Apple TV.

Buzz Crew!
I hate to be “that” guy, but since I have my degree in history, I though I’d let you know that Max from Fresno needs a friendly historical reminder. Lenin followed the Romanovs, not Stalin. So, the time line was as follows: Romanovs–>Lenin–>Stalin–>etc. What is really scary is the correlation to the tech world. Under this corrected time line, XP=Romanovs, Vista=Lenin, and Windows 7=Stalin? Lenin was terrible and offered no downgrade option, but Stalin exterminated over 50 million people…so Windows 7 is really the Apocalypse (or at least one of the horsemen).

Yesterday you were talking about WiMAX being deployed for the first time in the U.S. in some small town, but I received an interesting piece of junk snail mail on Saturday from AT&T proclaiming “There’s a new internet in town!” They advertise up to 2 megabits per second (not that fast, but a start) and charge $20 a month for 384kbps speed when bundled with phone service. The interesting thing is they are selling this service in Anchorage, Alaska, not exactly tech capital of the world (we don’t have AT&T 3G coverage anywhere in the state). Here is the link to their AT&T Alascom WiMAX service page. http://www.attalascom.com/home/anchorage.html

Do Not Track registry
Tom, Molly,
Regarding your discussion in episode 704 about the do not track registry, I have a well actually for you. It looks like the deletion of cookies is not sufficient to avoid tracking these days. The Financial Post here in Canada published an article about ISPs using a service to perform deep packet inspection of your Web traffic to create targeted advertising.
According to the company providing the hardware and services, it is all anonymous, secure, etc., but we all know how well companies secure data. Plus, that one (or more) times you Google you name means that someone will be able to figure out who is the person being tracked in the data.
Here is the link to the article:

Psystar/Apple monopoly?
Hello TMJ,
This is Diane the architect, long time listener first time writer.
Writing in regards to episode 703, the Psystar/Apple monopoly (?). I believe the accurate term to describe Apple is proprietary. Their product is neither hardware nor software but rather the Apple experience. Users buy in knowingly to an integrated system, quality and design, but most importantly they’re buying the brand and the status that comes with that brand.
Take for example elevators (excuse the industry reference). Most elevator manufacturers in the industry are proprietary and have specific requirements that distinguish them from other manufacturers.
The operation software, machines, and parts are all proprietary components of their overall product. On top of which the maintenance servicing is restricted to their respective manufacturers, otherwise the warranty would be voided. There are some nonproprietary manufacturers that provide a product built of parts from other manufacturers, their system is open and can be serviced by anyone.
The proprietary manufacturer offers an integrated system that has a certain proven level of performance, where the nonproprietary product offers flexibility, not unlike Apple and Microsoft. Apple prices itself into a niche market and basically provides a proprietary version of a common product. Just because Apple doesn’t prefer to share like Microsoft or Linux doesn’t mean it’s a monopoly.
Anyway, love the show and keep up the good work!

How to vote on legislation
Hi Buzz Crew,
Long time listener and total BOL’r. In fact it was listening to your rants on technology legislation that inspired me to build Govit.com.
You can vote on all active legislation and have your vote sent instantly to your congressional representatives. It’s a super easy way to take meaningful political action.
Please vote on Net Neutrality
http://www.govit.com/H_R_5353/To_establish_broadband_policy_and_direct_the_Federal_Communi/
Lot’s of other cool things on the site too, such as tracking your votes compared with your representatives, seeing the bills sponsored by the presidential candidates, and quick easy access to your representatives 24-7.
I hope you like it. :)

Silent and possibly deadly
Hello BOL!
I thought I would send in a quick story regarding the Hybrid car silence issue. On June 30, 2007, I was walking home from work and was hit by a hybrid car. I did not have an iPod with me, and was not speaking on the phone. The driver made no attempt to make his presence known, and afterward, told the police that his excuse was that “you just can’t hear these hybrid cars.”
As a victim of the Silent and Possibly Deadly cars, my vote would definitely be to increase the noise these cars create. It could prevent anyone else from having to deal with the aftermath. Luckily, I had only a fractured bone in my heel and couldn’t walk for three months, but these accidents could be a lot worse.
Thanks for bringing such an awesome show to us every day!

Bosses to snoop on e-mails
Bosses could be given the power to snoop on employees’ e-mails and monitor their Internet messaging under a new plan to avert a terrorist attack in Australia.
Federal Attorney General Robert McClelland has said the new measures, which could be in place as early as next year, would allow companies to intercept staff e-mails without the consent of workers.

Trucking companies
Something to chew on….
Trucking companies can pay more than average for the roads, at least on a state by state basis...the Cliff Notes version:
Truckers must log their mileage traveled within a state. That mileage data is then combined with data about where a truck filled up with fuel. States monitor such data for a trucking company to ensure that a company’s trucks don’t fill up right across their border and then drive through their state without refilling. If a state determines your trucks are not buying enough fuel in their state for the number of miles your fleet runs in said state, you will get a bill for the difference.
Could this same model be applied to the Internet if the Internet was a public utility? Say YouTube has no physical presence in the state of Iowa. Then couldn’t the state of Iowa charge YouTube for the data they serve to Iowans on the premise that YouTube is using an Iowa utility without paying Iowa taxes?
Just a thought…
As always love the show!

Hey JaMoTo,
My name is Andrew from London, and I’m a reasonably long-time listener but first time e-mailer. I was listening to episode 701 today and got quite confused when you were discussing the Google Drive application, especially when Tom said he was on Waterloo Road… I didn’t see him, I was on Waterloo Road. Then he said meet by the roundabout by Stamford Street (the roundabout is actually an IMAX cinema hidden inside a roundabout and therefore almost complete inaccessible to pedestrians who don’t know about a series of tunnels interconnecting all the side of the roundabout)… but again, he wasn’t there. I live by that roundabout. I waited there all day and you guys never showed. If only I could Molly Rant here about your misleading comments (love the Molly Rants, by the way).

“Ship impounded, crew arrested for net blackout”
Dubai police have arrested two sailors found onboard the vessel, owned by an Iraqi company, and will refer them to Dubai Public Prosecution next week, UAE daily Khaleej Times reported on Saturday, citing a police source.
A second ship, thought to have been responsible for the cable damage as well, was also impounded, but has since been released after paying “huge” compensation to India’s Flag Telecom, owner of two of the four affected cables.
Best regards…

We have stupid legislators, too
Hey T.M.J.,
If there is someone in the world that can’t envy you North Americans on the stupid legislators field, I can assure you that’s the Brazilian people.
And to prove that for the entire planet again (after blocking YouTube because of that Cicarelli’s video), they have decided to block the access to Wordpress.com because of one specific blog (priscilafonseca.wordpress.com) that posted an explicit video from YouTube that’s not even there anymore!
Again it evolves a sex video, a careless girl, and service from the Internet used by more then 1 million Brazilians. I mean, how deja vu is that?
So, suck it up! Our legislators are worse than yours!

My wife insisted that I e-mail
Yesterday I listened to episode 689 where the caller ranted about the phrase “can’t have your cake and eat it too” (I know… I’m always behind… but I’ve listened to every podcast since around episode 100. Every episode… I OCD like that).
My wife and I have had multiple conversations about this phrase. She was really bothered by it… I didn’t really care. However, when I heard the explanation, I laughed and I laughed and played it for her later when I got home. She’s so grateful and insisted I e-mail to let you know how grateful she is… and I’m grateful we’ll no longer have this discussion!
Keep up the great work!

ISPs in U.K. against BBC
You may have already talked about this, but I am still a day behind.
I read in the news yesterday that ISP’s in the U.K. are up in arms because the BBC iPlayer service (a service that allows U.K. residents who pay a BBC TV licence to watch a variety of BBC TV shows anytime up to 7 days after they air) is so popular it is using too much bandwidth. Isn’t this where TV is probably going? This is only one service.
As Hulu, YouTube, and others like them become increasingly popular can you guess what will happen here in the US ?
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Possible cable cutters caught
Saw this in my morning feeds and wanted to pass it along. The little animation of how the repairs were done is a nice touch:
Dubai Port Trust authorities have held two ships suspected for cutting the undersea fibre optic cables that disrupted Internet services across Middle East, Asia and North Africa.
The ships, MT Ann and MV Hounslow, were caught after Reliance Flag, which owns the cables, passed along satellite images of the two ships in the vicinity of the cables when the damage took place.
This may not be part of any “conspiracy” as the authorities believe that undersea cable were damaged because of jerks and force of the ship. Details on Hindu and ET.
If you are curious to know how ships detect and repair the damaged undersea cables, watch this video animation from Alcatel-Lucent via Bonnie.net.

Digital switch-over --obvious fix
Sooo, why don't they just broadcast a message on the analog wavelengths for one month post the transition to Digital? The message can have both the phone number and Web site as to how to proceed from there. This would ensure that everyone gets the message–even the people who have been living under a rock for the past year.
It really isn't that difficult to figure out.

Another thought on floor models
How about this for an alternate look at the “floor model” controversy.
At my local Staples, all the chairs have a big sticker on the price tag that says “FREE ASSEMBLY”. So why on earth would they charge $5 for a floor model, when they’d assemble one out of a box for free?
Sounds like a manager with a Napoleon complex to me.
Keep up the good work!
