Buzz Out Loud Podcast 1114: Dorks will break your heart

by Tom Merritt
  • Post a comment

A new survey shows the messaging behavior of men and women on dating sites. And it leads Natali to the inevitable conclusion that you shouldn't date dorks. We also talk over the WikiLeaks pager data from the 9/11 events. And BlackBerry gets an eBay app. Why is this such big news?

AT&T points out that with Verizon you can’t talk and use data while on
their 3G. But with the iPhone you can’t talk and use data while on
Edge or GPRS. So that map that Verizon showed is the only time you can
do this on AT&T.

As far as the iPhone and SSH. Just because an iPhone is jail broken,
doesn’t mean SSH is installed.

Hey Buzz Out-louders,

Was on my way to class this morning when I saw this article in the Chicago Sun-Times:

http://www.suntimes.com/news/transportation/1846104,CST-FIN-apple26.article

Apparently Apple may pay to upgrade a station at the North and Clybourn red line L stop. They are set to open a new retail location close to the stop. I live near it and I can say with full confidence that that stop is pretty nasty and run down (like most of the CTA's L stations.) I guess Apple thinks it's not very becoming to have your flashy products available via a not so flashy station stop and is willing to fork over the cash to fix that.

Thoughts?

I've been listening to your podcast for about three years now. Love the show!

Hey buzz crew, I don’t if you saw this BBC news item about twitter and other social networking sites costing UK companies 1.4 billion pounds a year. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8325865.stm. The assumption is that because their survey of 1460 office workers indicated that people spent an average of 40 minutes a week on these sites that “such online behaviour clearly had a “productivity strain” on firms.” I call shenanigans, and I wish I could get my hands on the actually study so that I could fully debunk the it, but no such luck. My worry is that I read this at 8 am ET and I am sure by this afternoon mainstream media is just going to run with it with no thought or insight.

Love the show.

“Net Neutrality,” not allowing ISP to charge extra for special serves,
will kill the internet. If we don’t allow ISP to make profit from
investing in infrastructure, they will not invest money in
infrastructure. Unlike broadcast television, the internet does not
travel through a common good. Every inch of the internet in America is
built, owned, and maintained by private actors. In order to continue to
have good internet service, we have to allow those actors to make profits.

If you want better service, kill the government interference that
currently exists. Primarily this interference is cable monopolies that
are granted by localities. Since most broadband access comes in via
cable connections this directly hurts the quality of internet access in
America.

After hearing Texas Instruments threatened individuals who hacked their TI calculators, I began to wonder why would Texas Instruments even care. In my mind, other than being completely ignorant to the potential of the benefits of hacking, there are only two reasons why Texas Instruments would care.

1. The software programs offered on the more recent versions of the TI family don’t require the CPU processors or Ram that they currently have. If you are able to hack the calculator and import the TI-89 version on the software on a TI-83 version, you have now better calculator without them getting the additional payments. (Which, if true, is sad because they would rather protect their old technology than innovate and develop a brand new standard for calculators)

2. They are protecting the ability for their calculators to be considered “approved” for standardized testing. If hacks are available, they may feel they could lose that “approved” branding, which would hurt their sales dramatically.

(One could make the argument of preventing students from flashing a library of game-boy games onto the calculator and making it the best hidden video game toy in the school system. But games have been available for at least 10 years now on the TI-brand of calculators.)

Either way, these actions are surprising for a company that was voted by Business Ethics as one of the top 100 corporate citizens in 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007

Hi Buzz Crew,

Just had to report a strange occurrence involving bluetooth, an iPhone
and a Toyota Prius:

My wife and I were both driving home from the gym. I was engaged in a
phone call (using my iPhone and a bluetooth earpiece). She was
following a few car lengths back in our new bluetooth-equipped Toyota
Prius. Suddenly my phone call ended. I chalked it up to typical
cellphone dropped calls. But in fact here’s what happened. Our Prius
was close enough behind my car that its built-in bluetooth paired with
my iPhone, effectively hijacking the call. My wife said she was
listening to the radio and was interrupted by my friends voice asking
“are you still there?”

Anyway… thought it was an interesting story.

What is interesting here is with the 3 major Cell phone providers in Canada, Rogers, Telus and Bell, only Rogers has been 3G and GSM based. The other two were previously CDMA and EVDO based. Looks like they are rolling over to 3G technology sooner than anticipated.

Hey all,

OK, what bothers me always about saying 4k is this. We have 1080p, which refers to horizontal lines. 4k refers to the vertical lines. Apples versus oranges.

1920×1080 (2,073,600) versus 4096◊2304 ((9,437,184) Shooting quality of the Red One camera)

It’s just said, maybe, to make it sound 4 times better than 1080p. Which, at least, is true, since it’s 4.55x the number of pixels. But, 720p set makers should start calling them 1280 sets, and they can start selling them for more than a 1080p set. Imagine the profit margins! Maybe 1080p set makers will update to start saying they are 2k sets and charge more, for no change.

OK, sorry for the sarcasm, but 4k always annoys me.

Hey Buzz Crew!

In episode 1075, you talked more about OnLive's upcoming gaming service, which will let you play games "in the cloud" using your web browser as a thin client. According to their FAQ (http://www.onlive.com/service/faq.html), you'll need a 1.5Mbps connection for standard def (5Mbps for high def) and a "small browser plug-in." Not quite the magic technology that Tom had in mind, but still really cool.

We've got something similar--online right now, and needing a lot less bandwidth--for scientific computing. We've used the open source VNC (virtual network computing) software to create a web site where nanotechnology researchers can access more than 150 live simulation tools via their web browser. Instead of playing games, they're computing electronic properties of quantum dots and designing transistors made of carbon nanotubes. You can too! Just log on to http://nanoHUB.org . We're using the same software platform to create similar sites for many other areas of science and engineering, including cancer care, pharmaceutical engineering, and microelectromechanical systems. More details at http://hubzero.org .

Here's to a wired future spent worshiping our nano-botic overlords!

P.S. If you want to see nanoHUB in action without getting an account, watch this video on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mr0GA_TluGY You'll see the simulation tools about 1 min in.

Buzz Crew,

Great show!

You read an email on your October 1 show from James the Field Engineer about Star Trek Props. I worked in pumps/irrigation sales for a couple of years, and found that Infiltrator (http://www.infiltratorsystems.com/productline/h20_chambers.asp) -brand effluent-irrigation chambers are used very, very heavily in TNG, DS9 and Voyager series. They are used as wall support structures and decorations on walls in many diverse sets. As a guy who worked with the stuff every day, it became very distracting to see it in reruns. But it was clever, I’ll give ‘em that.

Also, in about every third episode, an away team would land on a planet, and in the settlement on that planet would be the same, identical trussed lighting-support structure (like for stadium lights, just lighter duty) right in the middle of the village. It would always go up past the camera frame and, presumably, be holding the set lights. But they made it look like it was the aliens’ normal technology. For every alien culture ever.

You won’t possibly care about this enough to read it on air, but Tom might get a kick out of it if he recognizes the Infiltrator linked stuff in various sizes on old STTNG reruns.

Hey Buzzies,

I always hear about how Natali is always breaking iPhones, and I just came accross this story on engadget with an impressive video of an iPhone protective sleeve that can protect the phone from a 2 story drop and a hard throw at a wall due to being made of a specially engineered, non-newtonian material, here is a link to the story, watch the video it’s quite impressive:

http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/31/video-tech21s-iband-protective-case-and-its-mystical-magical/#continued

Hope that is helpful to Natali

Dear Buzz crew,

I just saw on TV the new commercial for “The Shack” about how they sell more phones than the population of Scandinavia. Big deal really. However, as I’m watching the commercial there are these huge mountains in the background and dancing phones with yellow braids and people-phone-things yodelling. Umm … the Alps are in *Switzerland*, not Scandinavia. They don’t yodel in Scandinavia and there aren’t even any huge mountains (Norway has some, but not like the Alps). I’m so infuriated!

Okay, maybe I’m biased … I am a Scandinavian Studies student after all. But hey, how does that mistake pass so many people? Hopefully someone on the Buzz crew can sympathise with me.
Love the show!

BOL 1023: 802.11N(ever)

by Tom Merritt

Supposedly, we will get finalization on the 802.11N wireless standard in September. Of course, we've been waiting for that for years now, so we're not too confident. We also almost forget we're talking about the new Yahoo home page, and only I am impressed by Microsoft contributing to the Linux Kernel. But, I still think it's cool!

Hey Buzz Hosts,
All the talk yesterday about Netflix possibly being purchased by Amazon really made me think about how Netflix is predominately a tech company and how funny it is that my grandparents have a Netflix subscription.
You see, my grandparents have never had a computer, Internet, cable, or satellite. They don't see any need for modern technology and really couldn't care less about it. That was until my family introduced them to Netflix.
My grandparents still don't have a computer, but they are in love with Netflix. They have developed their own hack to manage their que without a computer. My grandma writes down the movies she wants and calls my mother about once a week to have her add them to the Que. My grandmother manages her Que, with shipping dates, by paper and pencil. This speaks very highly of Netflix's shipping reliability as my grandmother can tell you with accuracy when her next movie will arrive without having access to her account.
I also like the set up, since I get to use the streaming feature of their account on my XBOX 360.
I've include two photos of my grandparents' "Que."
Pic #1 and Pic #2.
I thoroughly enjoy the show. Thanks for keeping my up to date on the tech world!

Hey BOL-
In episode 1018, you mentioned what would child between Netflix and Amazon? Its already out there: RokuPlayer. After all, they both joined forces to get more content and even cross promote each other to sell more boxes. I even have an account with both and just got a RokuPlayer. Maybe they could iron out more included content if Amazon does buy them, but I enjoy what they both currently offer on the RokuPlayer.

The Risky Business podcast has the presentation of the security researchers (hilarious, actually), and an interview with them, both discussing the 2 keystroke capture techniques you talked about on the show. There are a few points that will get missed by mainstream reporting because these are corporate security researchers, not end-user security researchers.

1) An attacher who wants to use either of these method is going to choose a valuable target that meets the functionality of the attack. E.g., many, many ATMs use the PS2 keyboard interfaces required by the electrical fluctuation attack, making this a perfect exploit to capture pin #s. Niether attack is presented as a possible for use against individuals at home or in coffee shops.

2) The point is that sensors, such as those used to detect small electrical fluctuations and physical vibrations, are becoming cheaper and more sensitive every day, and these and other methods will be more and more viable proportionally.

Hi Buzz Crew,

Long time, first time. I was just listening to your audio podcast today and you reported a story where 6 out of 10 corporations don't plan to migrate to Windows 7. Tom specifically mentioned Intel as still being on Windows XP. I am an Intel employee and I can confirm that we had a pilot program for Vista but our IT department decided not to go through with the migration for several reasons (security issues, hardware requirements etc.) We had a couple of members of our group participate in the pilot and they couldn't stand it. During meetings the Vista people were always a few minutes behind the rest of us because it took them that much longer to come out of sleep mode, collaboration was nightmare for them as well (Live Meeting and Sharepoint were hit or miss on Vista). Bottom line, I believe we still use XP because it just works. I haven't heard anything about migrating to 7 anytime soon, will keep you posted if I do.

Love. The. Show.

Anonymous Intel ASIC Designer

P.S. Tom, cheer up! You'll get sponsors any day now.

Dear Buzz Out Loud,

I just finished listening to epsiode 1017 and i am truly sickened by your continuous criticism, pot shots, and negative comments towards the blu-ray format, sony's playstation 3 game console, and apple's iphone as well as other products. I understand as well as anyone that companies often make stupid decisions, boneheaded moves, and other poor choices. Sony's game marketing in itself is a tragedy. They have at least ten (10) potential million+ selling games but only three to four will ever sell to that level due to poor marketing. if the Playstation 3 had Microsoft's marketing they would be on the heels of the Wii in sales by now.

The reason i write though is that the extent to which you all HARP on the negatives is just too much. Nearly every week (if not every other day) you heap more criticism on top of the mountain that you have already created. Natali and Molly are especially guilty. I doubt that they even reasearch into, inquire about, or ever use a PS3 to even be knowledgeable about it. I fear that they just repeat what they hear others say without ever verifying the information... much like a lazy and ignorant parrot would.

I admit that i love the Playstation 3 because of the incredible amount of features that it has. And it does irritate me, not that you criticize the console, but that you do it while omitting, skimming over, or rationalizing the faults of its competing products and even the console's strengths. For example Molly trashes the PS3 because it costs $100 more than the midrange xbox 360 pro but actually justified the additional xbox live yearly fee as a "cost as a online gaming." For her it may be something she pays for without a second thought, however after five years that very xbox live membership costs the same as a Wii and listeners should be made aware of that additional cost when they listen to a technology journalist (who we are told by CNET is both objective and knowledgable) compare the two consoles.

Also you fail to mention that the PS3's hard drive can be upgraded with any off the shelf laptop hard (2.5" SATA) which is an incredible strength in terms of storage costs of the limited Xbox 360 options. Playtv allows the PS3 to act as a digital video recording device even while you are playing a game (currently avilable in Europe and possibly Asia). Remote Play allows PSP owners to access data and even play select games on the PS3 from any wireless hotspot anywhere in the world. Each point is a significant strength kept from listeners by Buzz out Loud and also CNET. Please note that keeping information away from the public is the opposite of respected journalism.

Since you all are so well adept at creating criticism though i challenge you to curb (or even shut down) the criticism until you can create a better portable high definition storage (i.e. blu-ray) format, or game console with online network, or even the perfect smartphone. You do not even have to create a physical product... just make the design and technical specifications for one that could be built. I really would like to see and hear your ideas. Then you could post the designs on your Buzz out Loud web site and have audience members vote on the best and also comment on them. Then you could show those companies how you are so much smarter than they are. I am sure that they would appreciate the education.

I certainly hope that your audience is more merciful on your work than you have been to the companies whose actual products you criticize.

Best Wishes,
-Playstation fanboy Raf (not Rafe)

P.S. I will not be surprised if you choose no to create because it is always easier to criticize than to create. That is why despite all of Molly's rants she will never change the world for the better. that is because it takes more than just hot air to make things better!

Hey Tom,

About Episode 1017 and Blu Ray Players. I have actually read that Blu Ray is way up. EngadgetHD has several reports on this. Way back in January they reported that compared to the original rate of DVD adoption, Blu Ray is outpacing it 2 to 1 http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/01/06/blu-rays-first-two-years-outpaces-dvds/
They also reported that Blu Ray Player sales were up 72% in the 1st Quarter of 09
http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/05/06/blu-ray-making-greenbacks-sales-up-72-to-start-09/ The fact is the Blu ray player being sold for under a $100 dollars is slow and just isn't very good. Don't take the experience of one Walmart in Wisconsin as the way BluRay is doing everywhere. Blu Ray is doing fine in the US and is doing even better overseas. Love the Show
