A new survey shows the messaging behavior of men and women on dating sites. And it leads Natali to the inevitable conclusion that you shouldn't date dorks. We also talk over the WikiLeaks pager data from the 9/11 events. And BlackBerry gets an eBay app. Why is this such big news?

AT&T points out that with Verizon you can’t talk and use data while on

As far as the iPhone and SSH. Just because an iPhone is jail broken,
doesn’t mean SSH is installed.

Even though they said it was free for life. But they did acknowledge that "It's a change." You think? Also you can now deposit your checks via iPhone. Wow.

Buzz crew,
Amongst all the haters, I just wanted to let you know that I love the
story choices you guys make. I realize that you have been getting some
haters recently, so I just wanted to chime in with the other side of
the story.
The number, amount, and kinds of stories you choose are thoughtful and
interesting. There’s a great balance between the stories everyone else
covers and stories you don’t really see anywhere else.
My only request is that others who think that the story choices are
excellent chime in as well. I’m sure we’re not the minority, and I
hate to see you all discouraged.

Now your time spent talking about whether or not you should be talking about Twitter, Apple and Google is taking up more time than you spent on those companies before. Now I propose a meta-topic where you talk about whether or not you should be talking about whether or not you should be talking about Twitter, Apple and Google. If you recurse enough times you should be able to fill the entire time that was formerly indeterminate.

Here’s the thing, (as far as covering the iPhone too much) I own a Nokia N810, and love it, but you don’t cover the apps for it, but covering a story about an iPhone app is going beyond the coverage needed (for general tech podcasts, if BOL were an iPhone podcast, that’d be different). Then… you mention in the VERY next story about having a GSM eBook reader? I have one (and will have one very soon, even better)! The Nokia N900 has been sent to the FCC for review. It will be GSM/UTMS and running Maemo, which supports FBReader (a fine open source ebook reader ) which I’m using on my Nokia N810 right now to listen to the BOL podcast, along with sending this email. I have it currently tethered to my NON-smart phone from AT&T (Yes you can) and am using an Apple bluetooth keyboard (which The iPhone cannot use) to write this fracking email!
Yes I’m biased but as far as tech goes, the iPhone sucks and the Nokia maemo platform kicks it’s butt! You’ll never see Nokia kick out an app from their “store” (APT-GET sources list), where ALL the apps are free, take that Apple fanboys! HA!

And Molly has the logical arguments for discrete devices. We also find out a judge has ruled IP addresses can only prove a computer existed and not a person. Good on ya, Judge!

This is Chip the Mech. Engineer and on episode 1013 you were talking about Sprint offering a netbook with broadband. I am looking at getting one because not everyone can get wireless everywhere they go. I live in a small town in Virginia that has 2 maybe 3 places that offer wireless (coffee shop type places). I have it at my house but the wireless at work is locked down so not everyone can get on it. Also my family has a cabin on the Blueridge Parkway and there is cell service there, Sprint and Verizon are the only ones that can get service though (don’t even turn on your phone if it’s AT&T). No DSL offered there, only dial-up so this would be great for weekend trips to the cabin and moving about around the town I live in.

Something that might help the residents of buzztown … I purchased a
kindle on tuesday and of course the price drops the next day. I
didn’t hear about the price drop until I listened to your show in the
evening – but at that point I opened my kindle, loaded it with a bunch
of stuff and started reading.
Of course after hearing about the price drop the day after my purchase
I contact Amazon about getting some kind of a price adjustment. Their
first response from the initial support person was they don’t do that
and if I want I can either return the item and repurchase it or keep
it and take a $20 gift card to make up for the $60 price difference.
I calmly explained to the support person that this was idiotic – for
me to have to do repackage it, get a refund, repurchase and reload the
new kindle – and stupid for amazon to pay for shipping it back, and
basically replace a brand new (but now used) kindle for another one -
when the end result is the same. I had to demand to speak to a
supervisor, but he relented and gave me the refund.
Normally I have found Amazon’s service to be very good – I have only
had to call a handful of times (and this is the first time I have had
to ask for a supervisor) – but you think amazon would have had a
solution for this already in place – I am sure I am not the only one
that purchased a kindle recently who is still in the return window.
Anyway – just thought that there might be people in buzztown who are
in a similar situation.

hi buzz generals!
for a few weeks i had my exams at the end of high school here in
switzerland. The oral exam was about a newspaper article, and guess
what… it was about something you have brought up several times in
the show: the grand dam youth protection software!
i almost didn’t have to read the article at all, i already knew
everything thank’s to you. a just talked and talked and talked… even
gave updates about the story, the teachers were very impressed. now
i’ve recieved my results: i got the highest grade possible.
i really can’t thank you enough for the great show you do, i’ve been
listening to it since a couple of years now and it has really helped
me to improve my english. when i started i often had to rewind, listen
again, but now everything goes just fine.
right now i’m on holiday in sweden, i’m on a train between Stockholm
and Göteborg, traveling at 200km/h, i’ve got free wireless internet
with 3mb/s download 1mb/s upload! nice! all that thank’s to a
combination of satellite and 3G.
another funny thing is that on the train there is a Sony Ericsson
salesman that you can borrow a phone (W995) from, for free, and it’s
packed with movies! really nice!
have a great week

Regarding your story on how you can develop an inner compass – I went to college in Idaho and it was pretty much common knowledge that anyone who had grown up in Idaho had an internal compass. They always know where north is, even in a closed room. The reason for this is most of the towns in Idaho are set up in grid system so that to get around you constantly have to think about where north is. Having grown up in California, I still struggle with directions that reference north & etc. and find it frustrating how much people in Idaho (& other grid-based cities) assume that it is obvious.
Maybe since Jason is from Boise he also has experienced this?

Interesting one there. Mobilin is a linux distro created and until now
managed by Intel that is aimed at the Atom based MIDs and Netbooks.
It’s looked pretty interesting, taking lightweight and fast Xfce desktop
environment and a standardised API to make it easier for programmers,
whilst including GTK and QT as well.
It also manages something few other OSs have achieved, a true boot up in
just 5 seconds, from scratch not Suspend To Ram, not hibernation.
With that announcement Intel has passed over management of the
application to the Linux Foundation, whilst retaining a person on the
steering committee. What hasn’t changed is the core developers. Intel
is still employing them full time to work on it, so it appears to be an
almost political rather than practical change here to try and pull other
parties in and get them invested in the development.

The stations must also inform viewers if they might need new antennas to tune in digital stations, the commission said Friday.
The new rules were prompted by lessons learned after Feb. 17, when about a quarter of U.S. TV stations turned off their analog signals. The remaining stations are scheduled to cut their transmissions on June 12….”

BOL Crew;
On Saturday’s show, you wondered, “why use Twitter hashtags when you can just use search?” For a very specialized term like SXSW, there’s probably no difference. But searching for #Lost gets me tweets about the show, searching just the term “lost” also gets me tweets about all the people who lost their car keys, for example.
So the hashtags do help to separate the specific from the generic.

Hi Tom, Natali, Jason and guest,
When you mentioned that pinkeltje was dutch I was intrigued. I’m dutch speaking but I had never heard of it. However I’m from Belgium, not the Netherlands which explains why. I did a quick search and found an article that mentions it’s origin.
quote: The first CD player was to be named ‘Pinkeltje’, after a well-known friendly gnome from a Dutch children’s story. Small and compact, that was the development aim.
http://www.marantzphilips.nl/Philips_Pinkeltje_prototype_cdplayer_march_1979_joop_sinjou/
Now I understand the name. ‘pink’ referers to the little finger or pinky. So the name of the gnome is derived from this (pinkel) and as if he wasn’t small enough they added ‘tje’ to make him sound even smaller.
The story of ‘Pinkeltje’ is a variation on ‘Little Thumb’ or (as wikipedia seems to call it) ‘Hop o’ My Thumb’

Star Wars TV Series = pure awesomeness
Tom, your plan to keep Lucas involved in this is great. Look at what the team for The Force Unleashed Video Game did with a similar setup. And seeing that story play out as a side story for the rebel alliance developing and ending at the "Obi-Wan you are my only hope" This would be pure epicness. Lucas is a visionary and needs to give the direction just as you mention and any major decisions made by him but he has to stay away from the camera and let the fans that are now in the industry that he practically created play the story out. I would be so excited to see this series.
Love the show.

Hey JaToNa,
In episode 913, you talked about how Hulu content is no longer available on TV.com. Well, it apparently doesn’t end there because now Hulu is going to be removed from Boxee by the end of the week. Just when you thought that the media companies were FINALLY starting to embrace (using the term “embrace” loosely) the Internet as a new medium for content delivery, the content providers decide to pick up their ball and go home.
I bought an Apple TV in the first place with the specific intention of watching Hulu ON MY TV (thanks to a certain CNet video from Tom)! And while I know there are other ways I can get Hulu on my TV (a netbook comes in handy for this), there was no better or easier way to than using Boxee on an Apple TV. Heck, I even convinced a few of my friends to buy an Apple TV strictly on a demo of Hulu running on Boxee. I now feel bad for convincing them to get an Apple TV given that they won’t be able to get Hulu anymore.
As for the fate of my Apple TV, I’ll still use it to watch my handbraked movies (legally bought) and to watch my video podcasts (especially Loaded). However, it just doesn’t feel the same as before, similar to when that childhood friend moves to another state. Yeah, you say you’re going to write and keep it touch, but you never do…

Dear JaNoTo;
The problem with most of the medical wiki’s is that people don’t do the full
research to properly diagnose their conditions (IMHO over 90% of medical
problems can be diagosed by a good history & physical without all the fancy
tests) and they come to snap decisions. This is especially important when,
like everyone, someone want’s to find a simple, benign diagnosis for their
and can miss subtle finding pointing to a more serious condition and
lifesaving treatments are delayed. I LOVE it when patients come into my
office informed and are able to ask appropriate questions but have a hard
time when they come in and quote the “Insert name of popular pulp magazine
here (name withheld to prevent litigation)” saying “But they said that
pressure on the chest isn’t heart disease but acid reflux so just give me my
antiacids and I don’t need an EKG”.

Hey Buzz Crew,
I’ve been traveling so I missed a couple podcasts, but I don’t think there has been a mention of the re-start of the One Laptop Per Child Give One Get One program this past Monday (11/17). I’ve been wanting to get one of these laptops for a while mostly because I think they’re interesting and I want to help out the program. I know the OLPC folks got a lot of grief last time they offered this program because they didn’t really have the logistical infrastructure to handle the delivery of laptops to people who bought them quickly and some people had to wait months to get theirs. This time however, they’ve teamed up with Amazon.com and things look like they should work much more smoothly. I placed my order with Amazon and I should get mine by Friday.
I’m sure there are listeners that would like to get a new NetBook/E-reader. And I think the keyboard is waterproof so in can be a great conversation opener for chatting by the pool (Chris from Austin). So deploy the Buzz Brigades to help kids in developing countries get a great tool for education.

Hey JaMoTo
I was listening to episode 853 and 854 Re: The Wii speak application and then again on to the subject of the software companies not liking pre-loved games.
If the companies don’t like the idea of pre-loved games why don’t they have their own way of buying back sold games. This would allow people to get the same value from their games as trading their old games to EB etc… But allow credits to the new games. This would kill 2 birds with one stone so to speak.
Plus with the idea of saving the planet. Think about the latest game being made out of our old games.
Love the show.

Hey Buzz Gang,
Just wanted to tell how impressed I was with the new NetFlix add-on to the Xbox 360. The quality is very good, particularly on cartoons. I just hope they update it so you can add stuff to your queue without a computer. I would hate to think the Xbox is just as dumb as a TV tuner and can only passively show videos. That would be as stupid as having a super gaming computer that’s hooked to my TV and my network that can’t browse the web… oh wait… never mind.
Take Care,
Kelvington
I have to disagree that the ‘Remote Spy’ program is significantly different then EA’s DRM. Well, on a technical level at least.
Both should have EULA’s stating don’t use their program illegally.
Both are meant to be put onto a computer you have legitimate access to.
Both change how your computer works and that change can be percieved as negative.
An unauthorized user can install both of these programs without permission by owner of the computer.
Both have removal issues.
Both can have legitimate uses.
In the discussion the case was made for business sales of this product, but for private sales one completely legitimate reason for a spy program that quickly comes to mind is by parents monitoring their children’s computers. I’m sure there are other things people can think up, but that’s my strongest legitimate use point.
In the class action lawsuit (http://www.courthousenews.com/2008/09/23/Spore.pdf) it states that the irremovable DRM is not disclosed (properly/at all) in the EULA and even if you made a case that it didn’t inappropriately phone home, the fact that it can prevent legitimate hardware/software from working is malware like behavior that occurs after an uninstall of the game itself.
In both cases when looking from a certain perspective they are put in a good or bad light… but if the government goes after one they should be going after the other.

Hey buzzards!
First off love the show!
This email is in response to the voice mail about online video. I wanted to point out that you shouldn’t be mad at cbs as all the shows they produce are online. If you will notice all the shows that warner brothers produces, ie “the mentalist” “cold case” and “without a trace” are not online anywhere. Same goes for the shows produced by abc studios for cbs- “criminal minds” and “ghost whisperer”. Instead of cbs you should be mad at the company that produces the show .
Just my two cents.
