BOL 1073: Open Android Alliance to fight Google's evil empire

by Tom Merritt

A Google Android mod received a cease and desist for including Google apps in the mod. Seriously? Google may not be a walled garden with a high wall but it's a walled garden nonetheless. And it's pretty sad when your open-source project gets protested for not being open. We also discuss whether the Dell Latitude Z series is for posers. Or us. Or both. Which makes us posers. Own it, people.

Hi Buzz Folk –

Episode 1072 included some speculation as to why AM broadcast band
reception is seldom included with portable media devices. I think the
problem comes no so much from the receiver technology as from the
antenna requirements.

FM broadcast uses a wavelength on the order of three meters, so a
relatively short whip antenna can efficiently capture the signal. a
three or four foot long headphone cord typically doubles as the
antenna on these devices.

In contrast, the wavelength used by AM broadcast ranges up to 600
meters, so a very short antenna is quite ineffective. If you dig
around the bottom of your closet, find your old AM/FM transistor radio
and take it apart, you will notice something called a ferrite
loopstick antenna. This device makes use of a high permeability
ferrite core inside a relatively small coil of wire to provide
sufficient antenna capture area for these low frequency signals. As
far as I know, there is no way to provide for AM broadcast reception
that does not require a relatively bulky antenna such as the ferrite
loopstick, and this is probably why you seldom find this feature in
portable media players.

You will find a very brief discussion of this type of antenna at:

http://www.electronics-tutorials.com/antennas/antenna-basics.htm

Great show, looking forward to many more episodes.

Thinking about it, it is obvious that Microsoft wasn’t thinking. All of us who might get excited about this program would ALL want to be hosts! Those not interested in hosting would probably not be excited about Windows 7 let alone an installation party.

Google front page patent – Please do not call this a patent, I know you all love to poke fun at us but be a bit fair. Design patents are more like a trademark then a standard patent. Design patents only protect the appearance and not any of the tech behind it, they are used for anything from packaging to buildings. The design patent only provide very limited coverage as they only protect against near exact copies. Still love the show.

But it's OK: if you preordered, the company will refund the difference. So she calmed down eventually. We also discuss China backpedaling on the filter software, and the need to encrypt.

Buzz crew,

You have mentioned this story previously – thank you for that as I
have been the person publicizing it – but the telephone incumbent TDS
just lost its last opportunity to appeal at the Supreme Court. A full
2 days before the city would have lost the investor money (they had
one year from the lawsuit start), the Supreme Court declined to review
the Appeals Court judgment. The City is now moving forward with its
all fiber network.

I have put the details up at muninetworks.org

Thank you for mentioning this story, over the past year, folks in

Hey guys, just thought I’d make you aware of plans in the uk to pay
for faster broadband in the long run by charging 50p per month ontop
of our landline bills. Currently in Britain the majority of people
have a landline with a line rental payable to ‘British Telecoms’ even
if you have another provider, so a £10 per month phone package starts
to cost £20. And with the prices of mobile Internet, mobile calls and
voip services (especially being free on mobile carrier ‘Three’)
becoming more popular and cheaper it is conceivable that the only
people paying for this upgrade are going to be the ones that aren’t
actually going to require it, namely the older technophobics who will
never ditch their landline and never been online. Anyway just though
I’d let you know what was going on this side of the Atlantic. Have a
great 1000th.

Hi Buzz Crew,

Let me cut to the chase. I heard on last Friday’s episode that this 1,000th Buzz Out Loud Podcast is going to be “longer.” How much longer will it be?

As much as I enjoy listening to the daily audio podcast, a longer one is not going to work for me. If the 1,000 episode was two months ago I would have jumped for joy (I “used to” listen at work). Recently, I’ve made a deal with myself (and my wife-to-be) that leading up to our wedding, I would go to the gym in an effort to be healthier (not as fat). I begin and end my routine with Buzz Out Loud. I press “play” on my 2nd gen ipod (I know I’m behind the times) to begin my work out, and I and end it the second the closing music finishes. If I’m in the middle of a set, it doesn’t matter, I stop and I leave. You see, I HATE the BORING gym. It’s the bane of my existence.

So that said, you will KILL ME if I have to work out for an hour and a half, or god forbid, two hours. I promise I will curse your names down to the last email, caller, or heaven help us, horrible Opera reference…

Speaking of Opera, Can someone please tell me why our country is so ridiculous that a company, such as Microsoft, can’t include or make their software the “default” browser within…well…. their software? What happened to a little elbow grease? If you have a browser “Opera” and you think you should have the right to be on someone’s machine, do what every company on the planet has done to gain market-share. “Do a little advertising. Make a better product. Creatively distribute it.” Perhaps that will help you get your product to the masses & gain some name recognition. I don’t recall firefox ever having a pity-party. I don’t hear them running to big brother, crying “It’s not fair! It’s too hard for me to get into the game.” Grow up, learn to hit, and then maybe you’ll get to play. Why does everyone think they deserve a trophy?

Thanks for listening. Thanks for sometimes having unusually short podcasts. Finally, Thanks for being my daily hub into the tech world. Congratulations on 1,000!

Sincerely,
Joe Pifher (Pie-fur).

Hey everyone,
I’ve been reading more about the new Amazon Kindle widescreen and it’s starting to sound like this is being aimed at college students more than the savior of newspapers. Even though this device hasn’t been released yet, and as a college student myself, here a couple of items I have before I drop down money for this device.

1. Many textbooks manufactures are making personalize editions for the university and are not available to buy online. This semester I had three of my four classes that had a personalize edition for the university so students had to buy the textbook at the bookstore and not at amazon.com.

2. Rumor has it that the new widescreen kindle will support PDFs. What would be great is if the new kindle will support powerpoint since many classes are taught on powerpoint and the professors put the ppts available for download.

3. Many college students will not get the kindle as the university bookstore will probably not buyback the downloaded textbooks at the end of the semester. Although, if all of my textbooks that were available for the kindle were $80 - $100 instead of $500 for textbooks, the difference in savings will pay for itself.

For years, I have been a Sprint…er…Nextel…whatever. Anyway, I see two things that Sprint can offer that will save them, if they so choose. First, you have the iDen PTT service. It is vastly superior to anyone else. Let’s face it, if you want PTT, Nextel is it! Yet Sprint has let this feature sit stagnant for years. Why else would they buy Nextel? Start throwing that feature in as many phones as you can, it has a loyal following!

Second, and probably more importantly to the masses, they have really great speeds (in some places, or so I hear). When they launch the Pre, they should allow 10 gigs of data and tethering. Offering a better deal, rather than a much /cooler/ product (iPhone) could save them.
Sadly, with the eminent release of a GSM Pre, it looks like Palm is doing the wise thing and NOT doubling down on Sprint.

By the way, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse is pretty much an idiot.

Respectfully submitted,

Clayton

Hey Buzz Crew,

Ann Arbor Michigan is losing its only daily paper. While not a city the size of Seattle (or Detroit for that matter), Ann Arbor is the home to the University of Michigan, and a decent sized city itself.

An article from the Ann Arbor Chronicle (online only news source)

The tech angle here is that the Ann Arbor News is going to a primarily on-line business model via a site launching in July called AnnArbor.com . There will still be two "print editions" on Thursday and Sunday. Should be an interesting venture to watch. I'll keep you posted.

I always cringe whenever you (and other podcasters) talk about “Sarbanes Oxley”, so I figured I’d try to summarize the basics for you on the mechanics of GAAP and SOX.

GAAP, generally accepted accounting principles, are the set of rules that must be used to account for financial transactions in the US.

Generally, when non-financial people talk about Sarbanes Oxley, they are only referring to a single section, Section 404. The essence of this section is that a public company must have documented and tested procedures (called internal controls) over the it’s financial reporting. One aspect of this is that you must have controls that ensure that you adhere to GAAP.

In a nutshell: GAAP is the rules. SOX makes you have procedures to follow the rules.

The discussion on why accounting rules would affect the ability to charge or not charge for software upgrades is a topic for another time. Why it can’t be one cent versus $10, is probably a judgement call to make the amount “significant” enough in the accounting sense. IMHO it could be less, but c’mon, they are in the business of making money.

Hope this helps.

Hey Jatona, Patrick the problem solver here.

Regarding the netbook naming issue, here is a word you could use to refer to the devices *and* the feelings you seem to have towards them: “mehbook”.
Ok this won’t stick, but it’s sort of fun to say once or twice right?

Hey Buzz People,

Jonathan from the UK here. I found a story on the BBC’s website (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7885569.stm) talking about how the European Parliament(different from the EU? Not sure :) wants to have a red button on the front of a games console to turn off the game or ban a particular game from running. What the EP doesn’t seem to realise is that the console ALREADY HAS AN OFF BUTTON!. Games are rated for a reason, parents should choose which games their child can play. Also, all of the current gen consoles(360, Wii and PS3) have age settings so you can ban games over a particular age built into the console. The European Parliament do indeed need to educate parents to the avaliability of the functions, but if the parents don’t already exercise authority over their children when it comes to video games, how is a big red button going to change anything?

Educate the parents to this function of the console, and leave us gamers alone. That was my Jonny rant :)

Love the show, Jonathan.

I’m not sure why the authors guild are upset about the text to speech
thing on the new Kindle.

Heya Buzz Crew,

In episode 909 (and others), there was a general sense of irrelevance regarding satellite radio. *gasp!*

I have been a satellite radio subscriber for years now and while I was quite skeptical of the merger, I still love my Sirius-now-SiriusXM radio - in both cars. I often equate the experience to moving from dial-up to high-speed Internet: don’t try it unless you’re ready to commit because you won’t want to go back. I don’t even listen to the sports or celebrity stuff; the music is enough for me. The channels are far more genre-specialized than any terrestrial market and, of course, the music is commercial free! When I’m at home I even tune into their TV feed (via DISH Network / DIRECTV) and online stream since I already know the lineup.

They have made listening while driving a great experience and it’s available right now, not in a few years. I’ll warrant that there are good ‘net-based audio options, but wireless data coverage is not ubiquitous, streaming is unreliable while driving (tower hops), and, most serious of all, we are always under constant threat of usage caps.

They had better be careful with the price, though - there is a fiscal limit to my love. :-)

You mentioned the iPod Breathalyzer on the show this last Monday (Ep. 902) and I thought you might like the link. Behold, the iBreath! It looks like this is not only an iPod Breathalyzer, but also a FM transmitter. Not only will this work off of your ipod’s batteries, but you can also use it with (I believe) is just a standard iPod sync cable hooked to any power source (Computer or USB power adapter for car or wall).

Hey buzz team,

This is Alex from RssPlayer and I just wanted to add to Joshes email from episode 903 when he created the tiny urls for all your podcasts.

There is something called Custom Url Schemas on the iPhone. They are designed so that one app can open another app and share data. Some commonly know schemas are http:// (opens safari) tel:// (calls someone) and mailto: (opens email). In the next RssPlayer update, I will incorporate a custom url schema that will allow you to import a feed simply by clicking a link in safari or mail.

Here is an example
rssplayer://foo.com?feedurl=http://tinyurl.com/ourfav

When clicked, RssPlayer opens and import the feed. No more typing.

Maybe someone will build a iPhone friendly netcast directory with a button that imports directly to RssPlayer. :-)

So that’s it.

Keep up the good work.

Hey Tom, Natali, Jason, Rafe, and Molly Monday

This is in reference to picking up geeky/nerdy chicks at coffee shops.
Ever since last month (or two months ago) when you discussed
initiating conversation with girls who use netbooks (or anything tech
related for that matter) at coffee shops, I have been trying to get my
game on and work up the courage to talk to some of them. Today, I had
the perfect opportunity when a very attractive woman sat down next to
my table and opened a book on how to use Adobe Dreamweaver CS4. She
started reading on page one, so I assumed that she was just beginning
to learn how to use it. This was perfect, because not only do I use
CS4, but I just finished reading a book on it myself! So, with my
heart pounding, palms sweaty, and mind racing, I opened my mouth and
said: “excuse me, hi, you are going to really love using that
software.” She then turned to me, smiled and said: “really, that’s
great because I’ve been looking for a good alternative to Front Page.”
We then nerd-chatted it up for 20 minutes, and then she ended up
giving me her number! Score!

So, thanks for the help and encouragement guys, it worked!

I just have to give a “well actually” to the Crazy Canuck.

I checked up on CrazyCanuck’s numbers. I didn’t quite follow. They seemed pretty off to me.

The first place I assumed he strayed was his calorie conversion. Food Calories are based upon heating one KiloGram of water 1 Celsius Degree. (not 1 gram) As such
they are equal to 1000 calories.

But that wasn’t enough of a discrepancy. “2,569 Calories is equal to .002988 Watts”???

The watt is a unit of measurement equal to 1 Joule/ 1 second. (1 Kilowatt equals 1000 joules/ second.)
1 calorie is equal to 4.187 Joules. (1 Kilocalorie= 4187 Joules)

So a 1 oz. shot of whiskey containing 64(,000) Calories equates to 267,953.88 Joules. In terms of watts (267,953.8 8) watts. or (267.95 KiloWatts.)

This means it would take just .56179 oz. of whiskey to produce 150 Kilowatts. (per second remember)

There are 3600 seconds in an Hour. 2022 oz/hr of whiskey could maintain 150 Kilowatt/ Hr. (50.56 bottles @ 40 oz./ hr.)

But we’re talking 100% efficiency here.

The worlds top of the line coal fired power plants are just 32% efficient. That is 3.125 times less.

2022 * 3.125 = 6318.75 oz/ hr. or 158 bottles/ hr.!!

But that’s really good!!, The worlds most efficient otto cycle (4 stroke internal combustion) engine is approx 20 % efficient.

2022 x 5 (100/20=5) = 10,110 oz/ hr. or 252.75 bottles/ hr.

I figure if we had 405 people from buzztown, each taking 1 shot every 12 minutes (5/ hr.) we could
easily power a 100% efficient 150 kWH Data center between us.

Love the Show.

Josh in Salt Lake City.

Hey JaMoTo + 1:

On the dial tone issue from Monday’s show: when someone moves out of a
house or and apartment, the phone company *should* leave dial tone on
the line, but with no account information. This gives access to 911 and
611 (to be able to call the company to fully activate the line). When I
worked for BellSouth, that service was called a QuickServe.

However, QuickServes can be disabled if the line is needed at another
residence or business and no other cable pairs are immediately
available, hence the reason that Tom’s line didn’t have dial tone.
FWIW, no dial tone, no 911.

Great idea for a CNet Channel broadcast through CBS affiliates. I would have to say from a technology standpoint that couldn't be difficult and really shouldn't require the person to manage it. I personally have an auto updating video playlist in iTunes that nearly does this already. Just subscribe to all of your RSS feeds and then play through the list starting at a certain time every day. Once that's done playing go to an "off air" static screen until the next day, that's if you run out of video in the 24 hour period. It could probably be done with Automator and some apple scripts come to think of it. Interesting…might have to play with this for fun. jason

I work for one of the Microsoft managed partner ISV's. MS was just on our weekly internal sales call and our MS partner manager was on talking about how we can offer up Microsoft financing through the end of the MS fiscal year (June).

This financing is not just for MS products but anything that is involved in the entire enterprise solution including hardware and other software.

The internal MS guys are touting that 2-5 business days turn around and touting that it will be easier and cheaper than going with traditional financing . They are willing to finance anything from small 10k deals and up, and depending on customers credit rating with D&B will determine the % rate. He was saying that it was going to be in the range of 5-8%.

In trying to catch up with BOL, I was listening to #845 and I want to
pose a question related to the AT&T experiment with bandwidth caps. Has
anyone thought about the licensing contracts that AT&T might be looking
to sign with media companies? Think about it, AT&T or Comcast could sign
usage contracts with sites like Netflix, YouTube or Hulu so that their
site usage does not apply to their customers’ bandwidth caps. This would
allow ISP’s to make more $$$ and control traffic.

Coming soon to a legal agreement near you… AT&T merges with YouTube.

So far I have not heard anyone bring up this point via CNET or that TWiT
guy. If ISP’s can stop Bit Torrent, then they can probably allow
certain, preferred content to flow freely.

No charge for this two cents opinion. LTS.

Thanks,

Rodney

In show 853, you had two stories which prompted me to type in... First, you made a big deal out of Google search on the iPhone supporting speech. Windows Live Search Mobile has had this feature for quite some time - and I find it quite useful. Like the Google offering, you speak to it, it sends the speech to the servers, and the servers do the speech-to-text. The use of the accelerometer in the iPhone is new - and a cool idea - but the speech part is not new. I use Google Search on my Windows Mobile phone if I am in a place where I can type easily, but use Windows Live Search Mobile specifically for the speech-to-text if I am driving or walking.

You also made a big deal out of President-elect Obama making use of technology by planning to put his weekly address on YouTube. President Bush podcasts his weekly address - see http://www.whitehouse.gov/podcasts/, or http://www.whitehouse.gov/rss/radioaddress.xml. Not sure YouTube video is an earth-shattering improvement for a weekly address that most people won't pay any attention to after the first month. I also happened to listen to an NPR Podcast just after BOL, and they made it sound like Obama invented the Internet because he plans on putting government information on the web. While I'm all for using technology, and more is certainly better, can we have a reality check? Some of the advances in technology use are simply because time is elapsing. When the government launched THOMAS back in 1995, that was newsworthy from a tech perspective. Saying you will put more stuff on the web is, well, simply expected.

LTS,

/John in Fairfax

You guys were teasing about using old software on Friday’s show. Well I am

I am still using Quicken Version 3, 1993 that dates back to the Windows 95

There is more than one reason for sticking with it. Don’t have to learn new
version and best of all hackers are not
going to be looking for a realistic user of a 15 year old version of
financial software. Also still use Eudora for email.
Have been using it since 1995 and it also still works fine on XP. I have
years worth of elaborate filters which I have
moved every time I get or build a new machine. I figure all the hackers and
attackers out there are trying to
break into Outlook and MS stuff in general. At work I use Outlook on our
office exchange server just fine but
at home I am still with Eudora V5.1.
