After listening to your rant about aol. fail, I thought to myself that they just got it backwards. Maybe the ad agency just didn’t understand when they told them to put the . infront of the a and instead “edited/corrected” it to put it at the end.

The brilliant move would have been to make it .aol and then file for a new TLD (top level domain) which I believe will be coming online in 2010.

That would have been a home run, everything aol could have been .aol, so it could be engadget.aol, images.aol, email.aol etc.

So I’m just going to chock it up to advertising ignorance.

You mean to tell me getting hype on unreleased demos is hurting “aol.”? Not only are there people talking about it and trying to understand it; but aol is getting free beta testing for a new logo. Success! I look forward to typing in random crap after aol. to get a crazy page, like how users type in messages to google’s search to pull up funny search phrases or use mystery google for fun. I only hope for aol.dinosaur.com to pull up some sort of epic dinosaur themed aol page.

Plus, AOL is so easier to say than America Online. (think syllables out of your mouth then think of the major leaders for tech {Google, Apple, Sony, Microsoft}) – ccarline

They have a website at http://desertbus.org they’ve been going for 3 days as of my writing that gives them a total of 9 points in the game. (it takes at least 8 hours for 1 point.) This is so FAIL, I am having trouble wrapping my head around it.
1) America Online, AOL is an acronym, so why “Aol”?
2) Again, AOL is an acronym not a fraking sentence, WHY IS THERE PUNCTUATION??
3) Based on the write-up, there is a finite number of ‘clip art’-esque backdrops for the now Aol (pronounced “OWL” now in my book). So, I’m glad that the online company went with an image of Scratchy from the Simpsons with an exploding brain containing tinier Scratchy heads. Marketing GENIUS.

Clearly, the marketing team was part of, and stayed with, Time Warner. Not like I’d ever use Aol., but this is some serious marketing FAIL.

This has got to be the worst and/or scariest patents I’ve seen. Slashdot has a report that some company called Volomedia, got a patent that grants them exclusive rights to create, download, and sync podcasts. Them and no one else. The way it’s worded not only spells doom for nearly every online news/media site, but possibly TV shows to an extent.

Ok, so I want to patent the rights of creating a sequel work based on an original intellectual property. Oops, there goes the media/entertainment industry.

Please tell me I’m misunderstanding this patent, otherwise BOL and every other podcast that I love could be wind up on the streets.

Hey BOLers,

I love you guys, but every time you start to talk about Windows Mobile and the Zune and Microsoft’s strategy (or lack thereof), it makes me want to blow a gasket.

While WinMo is clearly behind compared to several other mobile OSes, everyone seems to forget that Windows Mobile has had apps available for a long, long time. I have a great Twitter app (Twikini), an official Facebook app, mobile maps with driving directions (Bing), and more.

Could it be better? Absolutely. There are still a lot of aspects of the OS that are behind the times. But if you look at the published required specs for WinMo 7 phones, it looks like it’s going to be really powerful and full of cutting edge features. Additionally, the Zune platform will reportedly be intergrated into Windows Mobile 7, so why would MS put out a Zune phone when ALL the WinMo 7 phones will be Zune phones?

Even though I disagree with your thoughts on Windows Mobile, I still … Love the show.

Hey Buzzers, I just read a rather startling article on Slashdot. The article says that amazon has patented a new ‘invention’ that will replace words in all kinds of text documents(book, reviews, etc) with synonyms in an effort to track pirating. As an author I find this very disturbing, I don’t want amazon to go changing my hard work just so they can track piracy.
So my question to you is, is this for real and am I understanding it right. Please advise.

Yesterday you asked if there is still a Universal Service Fund fee on phone bills, and the answer is YES! I currently work for a telco as customer service, and I get about 10 calls a week asking what that charge is on their bill. And of course no one ever likes the answer. In fact, I often have people tell me that our company should eat the cost of the taxes and fee’s. Yes, it would be nice if the telcos did that, but the taxes and fees are so high many companies would go out of business. If we had enough people complain about the USF fee or taxes to our elected officials we could probably reduce them. But don’t get angry with companies that are required by law to have them. I bet that most telcos would be fine will lower taxes or fees on their customers bills, because a happy customer is a customer who will generally stay. Love the show.

I thought you might want to know that Best Buy is getting into the highly profitable used games market here in Canada. I went yesterday (Oct 17) and they had a whole shelf including several major releases from the last 6 months or so. Discounts were not deep, somewhere in the neighborhood of $5-10 less compared to a brand new disc. Looks like Best Buy is trying to eat EB Games’ lunch.

I really don’t think the type of phone matters to people who use prepaid
plans. We all don’t live in a big city with the greatest 3G access and
wonderful plans. I love new technology but can’t afford it currently with
kids and other expenses. Also people have no idea what 3G access is
because we can’t get it. I currently have one ATT phone for my family that
is 46 dollars a month (that locks me into a two year contract) and use
magic jack for cheap landline. The ATT plan gives me no Text message, no
Data, and 450 minutes only. I think this Wal-Mart plan sounds great for us
“dumb people” that don’t have the luxury of the big fancy city. What
matters to us is how good the phone service is and I am not sure how good
Wal-Marts(I know Wal-Mart doesn’t do the service) phones service will be?

I have an iPhone 3gs an an apple headset but when I’m on a call and
start my car it will ALWAYS disconnect any Bluetooth devices from my
phone and hijack the connection…

It’s kinda nice though Bering into the car and having everything
change over, the problem is when you get out you have to manually try
to reconnect a Bluetooth device before it will work – thus is not
always easy…

I was catching up on my podcasts and heard you discussing a penny-sized nuclear battery that had 6 times more charge than a conventional battery.
Turns out that story originates from the University of Missouri, my place of employment!

Un-cited quote:
"To provide enough power, we need certain methods with high energy density," said Jae Kwon, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at MU. "The radioisotope battery can provide power density that is six orders of magnitude higher than chemical batteries." And it’s perfectly safe.

Notice that’s not 6 times more charge, its 6 ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE more charge (sorry for yelling, I’m excited). Now my Furby can chatter on forever!

Hi Buzzfolk,

I beg to differ with the slow Windows 7 boot times story you reported on in Episode 1080. I have run a script (on the RTM 32-bit version) that measures the time, from shutdown to usable desktop, multiple times and consistently get a time of 54 seconds, which does jive with the times your lab got in their testing, but not what Lolo Technologies achieved in theirs.

I think the bigger story here is why is Lolo getting slower times?

I’m not saying it’s because they sell PC tune-up software and may have a conflict of interest, I’m just sayin`…..

In episode 1072 you played RougeTess’s voicemail regarding PayPal security
using the keychain security key. I jumped on the bandwagon early, and have
had one since they were introduced.

I hate to say it, but this cool little gizmo does not provide as much
security as it seems at first glance. Sometime between when I got mine
almost two years ago and now, PayPal totally neutered the functionality by
providing a “I don’t have it with me” bypass link, where you can supply
your credit card number, checking account number, or *gasp*, answer a
traditional pre-defined security question.

Yes, it’s better than username/password alone, but it’s not as good as it
used to be or could be. And it’s definitely not true second-factor
authentication.

Hey BOLers, James the field engineer from Michigan. In episode 1074
you mentioned seeing modern day tech in the new Star Trek movie. Well
I embarrassed my wife and impressed my twelve year old when I saw two
of the above Symbol M2004 hand scanners on the bridge of the
Enterprise! My son was even more impressed when I showed him one I
keep as a spare in my service truck. Now we just use them to ring up
customers at our chain of gas stations but I guess in the “future”
you’ll be able to fly a starship with them, my son can’t wait. Love

Episode 1072 included some speculation as to why AM broadcast band
reception is seldom included with portable media devices. I think the
problem comes no so much from the receiver technology as from the
antenna requirements.

FM broadcast uses a wavelength on the order of three meters, so a
relatively short whip antenna can efficiently capture the signal. a
three or four foot long headphone cord typically doubles as the
antenna on these devices.

In contrast, the wavelength used by AM broadcast ranges up to 600
meters, so a very short antenna is quite ineffective. If you dig
around the bottom of your closet, find your old AM/FM transistor radio
and take it apart, you will notice something called a ferrite
loopstick antenna. This device makes use of a high permeability
ferrite core inside a relatively small coil of wire to provide
sufficient antenna capture area for these low frequency signals. As
far as I know, there is no way to provide for AM broadcast reception
that does not require a relatively bulky antenna such as the ferrite
loopstick, and this is probably why you seldom find this feature in
portable media players.
