Vote for Buzz Out Loud at SXSW 2010

Buzz Out Loud is aiming to head back to Austin, Texas, in March 2010 for the SXSW Interactive conference, and we need your help.

SXSW just launched its "panel picker," where the public is invited to vote (yes or no) on different panel ideas, as well as weigh in with comments.

Our Buzz Out Loud podcast is one of the panels up for your consideration. So head to the panel picker at panelpicker.sxsw.com, and search for Buzz Out Loud, or go right to this link to vote.

Of course while you're there, you can vote and comment on tons of other cool ideas for SXSW panels. And you should. There are some great proposals.

Even if you don't think you can make it to Austin in March, we'd still very much appreciate you telling the SXSW organizers you support us. Unless you hate us. In which case there's totally not a panel picker or anything. This was all a ruse.

Buzz Out Loud 992: WWDC: What Will Data Cost

by Tom Merritt

We recap all the announcements from Apple's WWDC keynote, especially ruminating on what the tethering app will cost for AT&T customers. We also rant a bit about the new prices for current iPhone conferences. And don't forget Snow Leopard people. That looks like a good upgrade for a very affordable price.

Hey Buzz Crew

Apple selling the OS X upgrade at $29.00 is obviously a stab at Microsoft. According to Paul Thurotte on Windows weekly, Microsoft planned on selling the Windows 7 upgrade between $79, for the basic edition, to over $200, for the ultimate edition. Now Microsoft has 2 choices.

Choice 1: Sell Windows 7 at a similarly low price. This means that Microsoft would have to sell many more copies than they originally planned in order to get a good return on their investment.

Choice 2: Sell Windows 7 at their original target price. As soon as they would announce these prices, Apple would put new commercials of PC vs MAC where they would compare their prices and show that Windows is more expensive than Mac. This would be a stab directly at Microsoft’s current “I’m a PC” ads showing that Macs are too expensive.

Either way, Apple has put Microsoft in a position that they did not want to be in. After the Vista PR nightmare, the upgrade to Windows 7 is the most anticipated Windows upgrade since going from 3.1 to 95. Apple had to try to take that away from Microsoft.

Love the Show.

Guys,

I am sold on the 3GS. The feature set is a rock solid upgrade and kills
almost all the reasons a Palm Pre would be in the running. Still, the
weak link is AT & T, which I hate. But, I hate all carriers, so it is a
wash. Some of the limitations that ATT will put on the phone’s
usability, like tethering, will be negated by the jailbreaking
community, who will enable it. I doubt we will see a Pre jailbreaking
community. So, I still say that the only answer for Sprint (not Palm,
because they will be spreading the device over other carriers) is to
become the value brand. Offer better data packages and cheaper plans.
Otherwise, they are toast when the Pre hits Verizon.

Respectfully,

Clayton

Hey Buzz Crew,

I’m a relatively new listener, so I apologize if you’ve already covered this. I’ve recently learned of a machine called the EBM or “Espresso Machine” (http://www.ondemandbooks.com/hardware.htm). It’s a “book ATM” that is about the size of an office copy machine and can print and bind books to order. Their site claims that this machine will print a 300-page book in less than four minutes at a production cost of a penny per page. An NPR story reports that the machines retail cost about $175,000. (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=104644575).

I was wondering about the crew’s opinion on this as it relates to the kindle. This seemingly cheap and more environmentally friendly way to produce books would be enough to convince me to try this contraption. Do you think this technology could catch on? If so, how do you think it would affect the publishing industry and reading community?

Keep up the good work!

Hi guys,

I wanted to put my two cents in about the omelette in plastic. This
form of cooking if called sous-vide, under vacuum in french
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sous_vide).

Basically, you put whatever you want to eat in a vacuum sealed bag and
then cook it in hot water for some period of time. This is a very
popular way of cooking meat because you can cook the meat at 140
degrees Fahrenheit and you get the meat rare from edge to edge, it
might not look very good, pink throughout, but you could grill it for
a few seconds to get a charred exterior. The omelette in the zip lock
bag is pretty much the exact same thing just instead of meat you put
eggs and veggies and bacon. Sous-vide is a great way to make pulled
pork because by definition you cannot overheat the meat and thus you
can leave the meat in there for hours and even days.

As for the plastic, most zip lock bags do have on the manufacturer’s
site or the box it came in a max temp for the bag to be used under so
you do not want to over heat it. When heating up plastic, though, only
some kinds, the plastic releases a form of estrogen that can affect
mammary glands and in general is not good for you
(http://www.bio-medicine.org/biology-news/Compounds-in-plastic-packaging-act-as-environmental-estrogens-altering-breast-genes-585-1/).
However, there are special food grade plastics that do not have the
same compounds and withstand heat to a better degree and these food
grade plastics are the ones that should be used for the sous-vide,
though, one of those extra-tough zip lock bags used in water under the
max temp should be ok for making the omelettes.

This is about yesterday's episode

Let me start by saying I do not deal with this hospital, but have been part of a very busy EMS system for eight years. I would assume that the hospital was not turning away the life threating emergencies ("blood coming out of every orifice"). They were turning away the 911 calls that were stable. People do call 911 for less than emergent reasons; swine flu symptoms, to bypass the line in the waiting room (people actually tell me this), follow up doctor appointments, rides across town (say their sick and leave the hospital once no one is looking), this list is endless. Locally the hospitals reroute medic/ambulance traffic when the rooms are full and the waiting room is a three hour wait (the exception is life threating emergencies). Hospitals want to give the best service possible and if people are waiting forever it is a PR nightmare for the hospital. With the computers down one can only assume that this situation happened.

Second rant, leave this out if you do not have time,

Firefighters are some of the most intelligent people I know, you would be surprised how many have Bachelor and Masters degrees. We are given training but not every answer for the real world can be taught. When we show up, we will always find an solution to the problem presented. So if we have to install converter boxes, I have already put one in my house. P.S. please do not tell people to call 911 to get help with their converter boxes, Someone will do it!!! That will be my next email.

---------------

Hi Buzz Crew,

Hubby makes me listen while on our trek to work everyday, I learn a lot. So I am happy to provide some wisdom concerning using Ziptop Plastic Bags

However! Ziptop Plastic Bag Omelets are awesome easy and great for feeding the hungry hoards. My family is part of the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) which means we camp in Elizabethan Style during our Summer "Wars". Can you scream Geek? LOL

So the Ziptop Plastic Bag Omelets have been part of our morning fare for awhile; they are seriously easy, you can make tons of Omelets at once, and you are only using up 1 pot, a huge plus when at a camping event. We shall have to take pictures during our next camping event in June 19-21, to show you!

You need:
Large pot of boiling water

#1. Mix up eggs and salt and pepper and place into a large ziplock bag. We do 2 dozen at a time because it will go for the entire weekend.

#2. Bring tons of extras, bacon, cheese, olives anything you would want in an omelet.

#3. Pore 2 eggs worth of your mixture into the lunch sized ziplock, no more than 3 eggs worth or it won't fit. Experience talking here!

#4. Add your extra ingredients.

#5. Take out as much air as you can and close the ziplock. This is crucial! Air will cause the pocket to swell in the boiling water and it will POP! Yep experience here as well!

#6. Allow to sit in the water for 6 to 8 minutes, best part of this is that it is hard to overcook the eggs as they are in boiling water.

Pull Bags out with tongs (Yep learned that lesson as well) and it is ready to be eaten!!

Also? Do you all have a plan for the evening meet up for the 1000th episode? Since we work in the City, we would love to join you at such an event.

Cilean

LTS, and congrats on your upcoming 1000th show.

Hi Buzz Crew,

While discussing new video features announced for the Xbox 360 during show #987, Tom made a side comment indicating that he removed the ability from his remote to turn off his Xbox because he didn’t want it to shut down while he was trying to download something big. I just wanted to mention to Tom that you can actually set up your Xbox to download while powered off, so you don’t have to worry about leaving it on and logged in if you have a bunch of things queued up.

Quoting Xbox.com: (https://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/nxe/xboxlive/xboxlivemarketplace/marketplace/managedownloads.aspx)
“If you don't have time to wait for a download to complete, you can let your console finish your downloads even after you’ve turned it off. The console enters a low-power state and the power light blinks every five seconds during background downloads. When your downloads are completed, it turns off automatically.

To enable background downloading, go to My Xbox, System Settings, Console Settings, Shutdown.”
A handy feature that’s been in place for quite awhile but unfortunately buried in the settings.

Happy downloading,
Love.The.Show.

Hi Buzz crew

Hearing Tom talk about Opera Mini passing Safari as the most popular mobile browser (explained below) annoyed me; as the big Opera news yesterday was the release of the Opera 10 Beta 1!!

==Opera 10 Beta 1==
http://www.opera.com/next
* New looks by John Hicks, the FF logo designer
* 40% faster rendering and JavaScript engine (!!!)
* Opera Turbo: Centralised compression proxy (for netbooks on public- and airport wifi)
* Thumbnail previews in the tab bar
* From only nine to up to 26 speed dials
* Integration with popular webmail providers (for mailto: links)
* Inline spell-checking (yeha, that one took years)

== Opera Mini ==
AND regarding Opera Mini, the reason Opera Mini is so popular is that it is just a regular Java application. That means that it runs on almost any modern phone, not only smart phones.

Opera Mini now comes pre-installed on most (!) phones from Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Samsung, Nokia, and HTC. This is being pushed on the manufactures because Opera Mini pushed more than 122 million MB of data (January 2009) though their networks. That is a lot of monetizable mobile data.

Daniel, the opera singer from Oslo (really an Opera employee, but singer sounds cooler)

=====
Team Buzz –

It turns out that that Fire Fighters, not Boy Scouts, will help consumers with the DTV transition. I stumbled across this webpage: http://www.iafc.org/dtv which outlines a program which started in May between the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) and the FCC. The FCC is in essence recruiting volunteers from the fire service to go into people’s homes that are having trouble setting up their converter boxes. A good move on the FCCs part to get a group of volunteers with instant credibility who don’t have some kind of ulterior motive like let’s say, stealing from some unsuspecting person who simply wanted a different kind of “hook up”. The Fire Service, and all of public safety for that matter, is motivated by having the spectrum television stations are currently sitting on freed up. Once those frequencies become available, a large chunk will be used for increasing public safety bandwidth.

Hey Buzz Crew,

Just wanted to let Tom know that you actually CAN integrate the new Hulu Desktop application into Windows Media Center and Front Row. Not the cleanest integration, but it does work.

http://www.hack7mc.com/2009/05/adding-hulu-desktop-to-media-center.html

Also, as a side note, the desktop application does allow for much higher quality than the web version and allows for more resources to be used in achieving this.

Anyways the lady who owned the house had a giant collection of CD’s and the clean house team told her that they’d let her rip the CD’s to her computer and than sell them at the garage sale which, after dragging her feet about it, she finally agreed to do. Isn’t that Illegal? And while I have no problem with that really you’d think they wouldn’t say that on a TV show for all to hear.

Love the show!

Hi Buzz Out Loud,

Natalie was talking about getting a Pre and moving from Sprint over to Verizon and dealing with the fees and hassle of having to get a new Pre on Verizon.
Sprint will allow you to unlock your phone once you’ve terminated your service with Sprint. So you could use your Sprint Pre (or phone in general) on another CDMA carrier like Verizon. After you cancel your service with Sprint, contact customer support and they will supply you with a code that unlocks the phone. You can now reactivate the phone on another CDMA carrier. Check out the URLs below.

Buzz Out Loud 895: Is Brian Tong ageist?

by Tom Merritt
We continue to debate the idea of moving the Digital TV transition in the US and Brian Tong comes close to ripping on old people. Which I take exception to of course as I am ancient. In the meantime thousands of people in the tech community are losing their jobs which is no joke and there's more hype aroudn the Palm Pre. Should you believe it? We'll tell you.

I am sorry Natali, I did not mention you in my e-mail because you weren't on episode 893. I've been a loyal buzztonian for almost three years now. I’ve seen every episode of Loaded and Textra, and enjoyed them. I can't think of anyone nicer to fill Molly's shoes than you.
BTW: Great Nat Rant on extending the DTV deadline. I couldn't forget you. My Wife's name is Natalie.
Still love the show

Hey guys,

So I was at my local Fry’s Electronics the other day and saw a big bin of HD-DVDs on sale. At first I thought to myself… who would buy these?! Isn’t HD-DVD a dead format? Then I remembered a show where you talked about a DMCA exception that was passed which basically said that you are allowed to circumvent copy protection if the format is obsolete or no longer supported. Now I’m not obsessive enough to search though all the shows and show notes to find that particular episode but since you guys have railed about the DMCA more often than I can remember I figured you guys might know the answer.

Since HD-DVD is now obsolete can I legally rip HD-DVDs to my hard drive?
