While listening to episode 1078, where you were discussing the purchasing of specific genes, I was reminded of a story about some grad students reported by NPR’s RadioLab from more than a year and a half ago. The students were doing some experiments with E. Coli. Not liking the poop smell associated with the bacteria, they got a gene for mintyness from some other researchers and inserted it. I remembered that the students also inserted a gene to make it smell like banana once the E. Coli was ready for them to do their experiment. That was not included in this short article, but is in the audio show if I remembered correctly. Here is a link to an article about it, but the audio podcast is much better (RadioLab is awesome).

They should have either (1) an application/PDF document that you can
store on your mobile phone or (2) a URL printed inside the glove
compartment that you can enter on your phone to view the manual. The
latter would be better in general (because who remembers to download
the documentation *before* you have problems), but the former would be
better for areas with poor or no cell phone access, like the San
Francisco area.

Props to Nick the biochem grad student for the helpful link regarding Windows 7 for students. I checked it out and all you need is a valid .edu address and $29.99. It’s pre-order right now and they’re allowing downloads on October 22. Now that some of my textbooks cost upwards of $160 (I’m a nursing student) saving $90 on an OS that’ll hopefully save me from the hell I’ve been living in called Vista is quite the boon. Thanks Nick and thanks Microsoft, though I doubt I’ll be having any kind of cuddle party there might be some kind of ritual involving lighter fluid and my Vista disc…

A few episodes ago, you guys talked about wanted AM radio on the Zune HD, and I would agree. I was looking at the teardown of the Zune HD on iFixit, and noticed something interesting. In Step 8, they reveal that the Zune HD has a SiPORT HD Radio chip which just so happens to support AM radio. All Microsoft has to do is turn it on.

I mean the idea of a very slick touchscreen E series phone had me super excited, gone would be the dated OS that I tolerate, yes, yes, yes. Hey Buzzers,

I’ve got fios at my house here in Camarillo, Ca and one of the selling points for me, my girlfriend not as much, is the Fios. The only other option for internet here is Time Warner and given their track record I will do nearly anything to not give them a penny of my money. So yes, Fios can be a selling point, especially for a buzz listener.

Secondly I’ve got a pre and let me tell you, RocknRollHax is great. I get html formatted emails fairly regularly and some (looking at you newegg) benefit greatly from landscape mode (for readability). There is no need for landscape while composing (obviously) and I really wish they included an option foramdscape on email reading only.

Anywho, I’m also part of the engineer/architect/programmer cabal when it comes to caps lock…but it should be moved.

You have mentioned this story previously – thank you for that as I
have been the person publicizing it – but the telephone incumbent TDS
just lost its last opportunity to appeal at the Supreme Court. A full
2 days before the city would have lost the investor money (they had
one year from the lawsuit start), the Supreme Court declined to review
the Appeals Court judgment. The City is now moving forward with its
all fiber network.

Hey guys, just thought I’d make you aware of plans in the uk to pay
for faster broadband in the long run by charging 50p per month ontop
of our landline bills. Currently in Britain the majority of people
have a landline with a line rental payable to ‘British Telecoms’ even
if you have another provider, so a £10 per month phone package starts
to cost £20. And with the prices of mobile Internet, mobile calls and
voip services (especially being free on mobile carrier ‘Three’)
becoming more popular and cheaper it is conceivable that the only
people paying for this upgrade are going to be the ones that aren’t
actually going to require it, namely the older technophobics who will
never ditch their landline and never been online. Anyway just though
I’d let you know what was going on this side of the Atlantic. Have a

Hi Buzz Crew,

Let me cut to the chase. I heard on last Friday’s episode that this 1,000th Buzz Out Loud Podcast is going to be “longer.” How much longer will it be?

As much as I enjoy listening to the daily audio podcast, a longer one is not going to work for me. If the 1,000 episode was two months ago I would have jumped for joy (I “used to” listen at work). Recently, I’ve made a deal with myself (and my wife-to-be) that leading up to our wedding, I would go to the gym in an effort to be healthier (not as fat). I begin and end my routine with Buzz Out Loud. I press “play” on my 2nd gen ipod (I know I’m behind the times) to begin my work out, and I and end it the second the closing music finishes. If I’m in the middle of a set, it doesn’t matter, I stop and I leave. You see, I HATE the BORING gym. It’s the bane of my existence.

So that said, you will KILL ME if I have to work out for an hour and a half, or god forbid, two hours. I promise I will curse your names down to the last email, caller, or heaven help us, horrible Opera reference…

Speaking of Opera, Can someone please tell me why our country is so ridiculous that a company, such as Microsoft, can’t include or make their software the “default” browser within…well…. their software? What happened to a little elbow grease? If you have a browser “Opera” and you think you should have the right to be on someone’s machine, do what every company on the planet has done to gain market-share. “Do a little advertising. Make a better product. Creatively distribute it.” Perhaps that will help you get your product to the masses & gain some name recognition. I don’t recall firefox ever having a pity-party. I don’t hear them running to big brother, crying “It’s not fair! It’s too hard for me to get into the game.” Grow up, learn to hit, and then maybe you’ll get to play. Why does everyone think they deserve a trophy?

When I first heard about The Governornator saying that they will getting rid of school books and the kids will be getting that information online I thought “Is he going to buy all the kids Kindle DXs?” When I heard the later clarification that this will be starting with Math and Science books in the high schools I thought this is a great opportunity for Amazon. If colleges can start issuing laptops to every incoming freshman, why can’t the high schools issue Kindle DXs to every incoming freshman? Yes, a 13/14 year old can be tough on technology but if they can keep their DS’s, iPods and cell phones alive, I’m sure they can keep a Kindle alive too, think of the market for Kindle cases with school logos. Also unlike a laptop you don’t have to worry about the kids Googling or WolframAlphaing the answers to homework problems.

So where are you Amazon with your offer of selling enough Kindle DX’s to the California school system with bulk pricing?

Hi Guys
Love the show. I was listening to the WWDC keynote and saw that Snow Leopard was selling for $29. Everyone was amazed about this and you were saying that Microsoft will have to lower their price but that is an odd thing to say. Snow Leopard is NOT A NEW OPERATING SYSTEM. IT IS JUST A SERVICE PACK! Windows offers these for free so isn't it apple ripping us off(as always). Windows 7 being sold for $49(I think you said) is excellent seeing it's a whole new OS and a dam good one at that. Also in episode 991, you were saying you bought the MacBook Pro because of the express card slot. What do you use it for? I think what they have done to keep it only with the 17" one is an excellent idea. I'm just annoyed that I bought a MacBook Pro about a month ago and I WANT AN SD CARD SLOT!. ThanksJ
