I love the show but it can be hard to sit and listen to somebody for 5 minutes going on about a software licensing system that should be put into place, when it’s been around for 15 years or so.
It’s called Microsoft Open Licensing with Software Assurance. http://www.microsoft.com/licensing/software-assurance/default.aspx
Small and large corporations can purchase from this programme to license their applications and OS from Microsoft. They can opt in for Software Assurance which means they get any and all paid upgrades at no extra charge during the license period (Usually 3 years)
They also get support and other benefits. Media is sent out when required.
Some versions of the MS OLP allow companies to pay annually over the 3 years rather than up front if that helps their books. It does give you predictable IT expenditures.

When it comes to home users, most IT experts will agree that it’s usually best to use the OS that came with your computer and ignore major OS updates. Wait until you buy a new computer that comes with the new OS. Small updates like Snow Leopard on new computers like my March 2009 iMac make sense, especially at $30!
However, I like Tom, do not want to pay monthly or annually for my software. If it was an option it might be ok, but not the only one I hope.

Re: Nook v. Alex. I am not sure what trade secrets were taken from
Spring Design. Judging from the documents filed, Spring Design didn’t
even have a working prototype in the Feb 09 meeting, so the only thing
they exchanged were probably concepts. If B&N did not have a dual
screen e-book reader in the final development phase already, i.e., they
came up with it only after seeing the drawings in Feb 2009, B&N must
have one crack hardware engineering team (or ODM)/Android programmers to
get to a final product in 9 months.

Also, what’s the big deal about dual screens–Nintendo DS (hence the
name) has been around for a long time with split screen functionality.
Expanding it to a tablet size seems like an obvious expansion. Nintendo
lawyers: start your engines.

Hey Buzz crew! Bryan the Insurance IT guy here in Springfield, Missouri. I've been listening to the show for several years without writing or calling in, but I was listening to the Verizon/Exchange discussion in episode 1098 on the way to work this morning and thought I'd finally chime in with a couple of tidbits!

First, I administer Exchange and mobile devices for my office, and I can tell you there's no simple way for Verizon or any other carrier to detect and block Exchange ActiveSync traffic. ActiveSync encapsulates all device-server communications in HTTPS packets for security, so the only port that needs to be allowed for ActiveSync to work is port 443 - and you can bet all hell would break loose if any carrier tried to block port 443, as that's the port used for ALL SECURE WEBSITES! One thing they might try is to profile traffic patterns for ActiveSync and block based on that, but I'm guessing that's harder than it sounds and would get very messy, very quickly. Good luck to any carrier trying to pull THAT one off.

Second, I've now been involved in setting up half a dozen users with iPhones in my office, some on personal plans, and some on our recently-established corporate account. NONE OF US is paying the 45 bucks for "Enterprise" data service on the iPhone. For the users who set it up on their personal accounts, that didn't surprise me. I DID expect to get some pushback on the iPhone data plans for the corporate accounts, but in every case, we looked the AT&T rep in the eye and said, "Yes, it's a corporate account, but I'm only going to check personal email", and in every case, they didn't even blink. Maybe this attitude varies by region, but here in Southwest Missouri, at least, I've never heard of a case of AT&T forcing the $15 premium on iPhone users, even on business accounts. Incidentally, there's only one time we've been required to pony up the $45 for the enterprise data plan - AND IT WAS TO SUPPORT OUR LONE BLACKBERRY USER.

Maybe next time I'll call in, but I like to take serious relationships slowly. For now I'm still listening to other shows, but BOL holds a special place in my heart, and maybe one day I'll be able to commit.

You’ve been getting me excited about the Nook, with its ability to loan a book out to a friend for up to two weeks. But I just heard that not only won’t you have this option for all publishers (which you may have mentioned), but even when a publisher supports it, you can only loan a book ONCE. So if I loan you a book and you’re too busy to even start it, I can’t loan it to you again, and nobody else can benefit from me loaning it out either. Thanks for wasting my ability to loan out that book!

So three guesses where I went today. I’ll give you a hint it rhymes with the Ficrosoft Smore. Yes, the wait is over and I’m happy to announce (although a I’m tiny bit bitter) that the Microsoft Store is in fact a success. First of all the place is HUGE and loaded with all
the best Microsoft using hardware (and no doubt the most expensive).
In the store there are plenty of Zunes and sleek laptops, but the things that seemed to really seemed to put the asses in the seats were the gigantic touched screened computers, Xbox 360 games as well as some surface like gaming tables. Now this store does look a lot like an Apple store and it would have been nice to see some originality but all in all I have to say that Microsoft did this right. Although I have yet to have seen the new Apple store that is under construction as of now. All I know it that It has swallowed the store next to it and is now twice as big as before. So needless to say I’m freaking out over what’s behind that big black box inclosing it and so are the people judging by how many of them were trying to sneak peaks through the crack in between the doors Apple better come back with something FREAKING AWESOME to top this new store.

In ep 1077 you asked for a CIO/CTO to weigh in on the IBM Inotes vs Goolge Docs hypothetical prize fight for our hypothetical business. While I am not of that stature at my company I do sit right outside the out CIO’s office so I wrestled him down, duct taped him to his chair and made him answer this very question!

Okay, well not really that first part but he did answer and here is what he said:

“We actually looked at Google Docs for cost reduction and there is no way we could use it. With all the customer data that we have and the nature of our business (not to mention internal systems) having something in the cloud would be much to risky. Cloud stuff just isn’t reliable enough for us to even consider using it. Not only that but there was no way that Legal would let us (not to mention that it didn’t clear SOX compliance). And let us not forget about our ‘wonderful’ users. The learning curve that they would have to deal with might just break them.”

So there you have it. The argument against clouds at my company are (1) Reliability, (2) Legal / SOX issues and (3) Inept users.

With all the discussion about mobile OS platforms and developers in
yesterday’s show (episode 1078), I’m surprised you didn’t mention the
announcement Adobe made on Monday about how they’re going to enable
Flash developers to code apps in Flash that can then be converted into
native iPhone apps. Technical merits aside, it’s an interesting move by
Adobe to keep Flash application and game developers from abandoning
Flash to take a swing at developing apps solely for the iPhone, and you
have to wonder if Apple is somewhat annoyed that five iPhone apps
created with this technique made it into the app store.

So of course, I wound up at IMDB reading up on the subject, how mundane right? Why would I be emailing to tell you this? Well, I noticed at the top of their page, a popularity ranking, and had to laugh when I saw that the popularity of the series went up 34% this week. Glad I wasn’t the only one left wondering “wtf?” after that comment!

Dear Buzz crew,

I think it is a bit sad that when Gmail removed the “beta” tag from the logo it was big news, a trending topic on Twitter, and mentioned on the show, but when Yahoo Mail makes some legitimate enhancements...no one really notices.

Just a few days ago Yahoo Mail got a face-lift and added application support, but it wasn’t even mentioned on the show. I know you guys simply cover what people are interested in and NO ONE seems interested in what’s going on at Yahoo Mail anymore. As someone who has been using the same Yahoo Mail account for over a decade I find it sad that Yahoo has lost the mind share and, largely due to its lack of innovation in the past, gets no notice for innovating now.

Just thought I’d share my thoughts with you guys and encourage you to at least check out the updates at Yahoo Mail. There are still a few of us who like the service…

I was very interested in your discussion about libraries on Friday’s podcast. As a current library employee and student of Library Science, I feel that public libraries need to change their image in order to remain open or get increased funding. There are some great examples of this around the world such as in Singapore wherein the entire physical library structure and image were given a completely modern overhaul. They have gone from a simple book repository to a learning center in order to attract more patronage. Similarly in Fresno County, California the public library has merged with the public schools in order to pool resources and coordinate learning initiatives. Mind you I could talk about this topic forever, but I thought it important to share these examples with you!

I just listened to episode 1066 and heard Natali mention a new internet addiction rehab. facility in the northwest. Being the addict that I am, I had to instantly do a search and find out more about this. I found their website (www.netaddictionrecovery.com) and was shocked!

First of all, if you can afford it, it looks like a beautiful little vacation spot, but I have one big concern. Does it strike you as odd that they have, on their front page, links to their own social network and links so that you can follow them on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube? Oh, and don’t forget to check out their blog and leave a comment! Sounds a lot like kicking your drug habit with the help of your dealer.

I was at Wal-Mart last night when I saw a couple of movies that I wanted to add to my Netflix queue, so I pulled out my HTC Touch Windows Mobile phone (which I haven't been real impressed with by the way) and added the movies to my queue using Netflix's mobile site. On my way home I was thinking...what if Netflix came out with an app that allowed you to use your phone to scan the barcode of a movie while in a store to add it to your queue? You are making so much fun of the idea of Windows 7 installation parties. Well actually... this kind of parties are VERY popular and called: install fest (just type into Google). What you will see is a LOT of Linux install fest parties Microsoft communities also organize install fests. Usually they take place in some bar/pub where you sit with a bunch of geek friends and install a new release of some product. And after that you sum up the finished installations, unfinished once, also there are some disasters like a burned laptop etc.
So to finish this email - the idea is not new, not only MS does it but a lot of user communities

I’m one of those very few users that have a smart phone (AT&T Tilt) without a data plan. I want the phone for other purposes that do not require the plan. I bought it used and I am not under contract. Is it your understanding that they will force ME to add a data plan, even though I’m not under contract?

By the way, within a few minutes of moving your SIM card to another phone, the AT&T website will change to show that your phone is the one into which you have installed the SIM card. My family has been “swapping” phones around a little bit lately and I was amazed at how fast they detected the change.

Of the airplanes that have their own Weather Radar; it is usually
located in the nose of the aircraft and only covers about 160 degrees of
what is in front of them. They are completely blind about what is
behind them. So while you taxi to the runway and wait in line if you

Hi,

I am a day behind so I just listened to the 1046 episode. You received an e-mail that says that the IEEE membership is $15 I guess USD. As a former IEEE member I know you may be charged from $138 USD to $175 USD as a full member depending on the region of the world you live. As a student you get charged from $27 to $32 for one year and half of that for half a year. Also I searched the IEEE site and the only information I could find was that you can get MS software if you are a student member of the IEEE Computer Society.

IEEE Student membership is open to undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled in at least 50% of a normal, full-time course of study in an IEEE designated field.

Slmgr.vbs -rearm is typically used when building machines in a lab
environment. Typically you use it when you rebuild the machines in your
lab.

Also, if you use volume licensing (ie Microsoft KMS and your KMS server
isn’t updated to support Windows 7 yet) you might need to extend your

This will be my first “well actually” but as a mechanical engineer I
thought it worth pointing out that converting between units on a
complicated platform like the space shuttle is probably a bit more
complex than entering a few searches in google. Unfortunately, you
can’t just replace every 1/4″-20 x 1″ socket head cap screw with a
M6.35-1.27 x 25.4 screw. For one, the hardware doesn’t exist, and two,
the nomenclatures are different. You would actually have to reengineer
quite a bit to make a functioning system using only metric units.

It may be the bane of every freshman engineering student in the US,
but mixed units are the current reality.

In large part to your constant harping about the DMCA takedown procedure’s lack of consideration for fair use, I decided to tackle the issue as the topic of my paper topic in my Copyright seminar this past semester. I got an A in the class and sumbitted it to a copyright writing competition. I won the competition at the local level and will move on to the national competition. I got $600 from ASCAP for winning at the local level, so it turns out the ASCAP is actually good for something.

So Tom, from episode 1003, you had a 1977 Maverick? Tell us about it.
I had a 1969 and a 1977 Maverick at the same time.
Bought the ‘77 new, my 1st new car ever. Loved the ‘69 and cussed the
‘77 most of the time.
The 1977 had a 302 engine and by the time all the pollution crap was
hung on it I think it had less
power than the 1969 did with it’s straight 6 (170 c.i.d. I think). ‘69
was fast and had great fuel mileage.
Did you have a CB too or was that just a Midwest thing? Would that
qualify as the original form of Twitter?
What’s your 10-20 good buddy? I bet Cooley had a CB, am I right?
