Tech Minute: Protect yourself with these apps

1:01 /

Your smartphone may just be your best tool for self-defense. In this Tech Minute, CNET's Kara Tsuboi recommends apps that can connect you with emergency services or alert friends and family in case of danger.

[MUSIC] Start with SOS iEmergency, a $2 app for iPhone users. Import your loved ones contact information and once the app is open and running in the background, tap medical, fire, or police for the type of emergency you're experiencing. A second tap confirms it wasn't accidental and will notify emergency services and your loved ones. Or download the free safe track app onto your iPhone or Android. Keep your finger on the button on the screen if you are in a dangerous place. If crisis arises, take your finger off the screen and police will be notified if you don't enter a pin in ten seconds. This app also shows heat maps for dangerous neighborhoods based on users past experience. Handy if you're traveling in a new city. And finally use that smartphone to get prepared before danger strikes. Android users can download the free Kraw Maga Self Defense app to watch video tutorials to learn self defense techniques based on military grade Jiiu Jitsu. In San Fransisco, I'm Carter Suboy.
