Tech Minute: Best tablets for school

1:02 /

Tablets are quickly becoming a coveted school supply. They're handy for reading digital textbooks and lightweight enough to carry in a backpack. In this Tech Minute, CNET's Kara Tsuboi reports on the tablets best suited for students and their budgets.

For students, a tablet that seems to cover their basic needs is a Samsung galaxy note 10.1. It's multitasking feature that can run programs simultaneously will be great for studying and working on projects, while the included stylus or S pen is ideal for jotting down notes. The 10.1 starts around $300. The $800 Microsoft surface pro 3 is the war force of the tablet category. It also boasts laptop functionality. Pop out the keyboard for note taking but fold it back up for easy portability. For those students who are already toting an iPhone and love their Mac Book Pros, keep it in the Apple family with the iPad Mini. Its lightweight and portable design, plus that well-known Apple ecosystem will run you about $400. If your student is only in need of an eReader, it's hard to top the functionally and price of the Amazon Kindle PaperWhite. Pages load quickly, it synchs with Amazon's extensive textbook library, and clocks in at only $125. In San Francisco I'm Karen C. Boyd, CNet.com for CBS News. [MUSIC]
