Short Take: SAP and IBM release database server

SAP AG has certified the IBM System/390 platform as a database server for the R/3 System. SAP and IBM announced the certification after concluding a ten-month joint development effort. Five companies--Amoco, IBM PC, Lufthansa Systems, Motorola, and Carl Zeiss Jena--will receive the platform in a pilot program; general availability is planned for mid-1997.

Short Take: SAP readies mainframe link

Business applications software maker SAP is getting back to its mainframe roots, debuting a version of its R/3 application system for IBM's System/390 mainframe operating system. After a ten month joint development effort with IBM, SAP will this month launch a pilot rollout of the mainframe server software with five companies including the German airline Lufthansa Systems and hardware maker Motorola. SAP plans to begin a phased rollout in the spring, the company said.
