Sony releases 802.11a products

Consumer-electronics maker Sony announced that it will release 802.11a PC Cards and access points this month. Sony's $180 Vaio 5GHz wireless LAN PC Card, the PCWA-C500, and the $400 access point, the PCWA-A500, will be available later this month. They will allow consumers to connect PCs together to access and stream content. The 802.11a standard offers data-transfer speeds of up to 54 megabits per second and has a range of up to 300 feet.

Dell releases new notebooks

Dell Computer launched on Monday a new Latitude notebook, the C500, and bumped up the processor speed of the existing C600 model. Dell is targeting the Latitude C500 at business, education and government customers. The C500 starts at $1,599 with a 700MHz Pentium III, 12.1-inch display, 128MB of RAM, 8MB of video memory, 6GB hard drive, CD-ROM drive, modem and Windows 2000. The C600, which sells for $2,359, packs a 1GHz Pentium III, 14.1-inch SXGA+ display and features similar to the new model.

Short Take: HP camera offers wireless printing

Hewlett-Packard has begun shipping the HP PhotoSmart C500 digital camera, which allows users to print photos directly from the camera using the wireless "JetSend" system, bypassing the PC. The 2-megapixel camera also features 3x optical and 2x digital zoom, a 2-inch LCD viewer and a 16-MB Compact Flash memory card. It carries a street price of $699.

Short Take: Umax cuts Mac clone prices

Umax Computer is cutting prices on all of its Mac OS clones by as much as $200. The S900/225 with a 225-MHz 604e PowerPC processor is now priced at $3,699, down from $3,899. The entry-level C500/180 with a 180-MHz 603e PowerPC chip is now priced at $1,199, down from $1,349.
