Scorptec Mantis (AMD)

This is a very well-rounded HTPC, but the AMD APU might concern power users, with weaknesses in media transcoding offsetting decent gaming performance.

Dell Inspiron Zino HD (AMD Athlon X2)

In the right configuration, Dell's Inspiron Zino HD will fit seamlessly into your living room as a PC-based video source. Due to its uneven handling of even standard-def video, this $468 build isn't quite up to the task. Fortunately, Dell offers the right upgrades to get you to the hallowed ground of PC-based video content--just be prepared to spend a little bit more to get there.

AMD Phenom 9600 (2.3GHz)

AMD's new Phenom quad-core CPU has little to recommend it over competing chips from Intel. The Phenom is marginally less-expensive, but not enough to make up for its subpar performance. Unless AMD drops prices more aggressively, it looks like Intel will maintain its grasp on the CPU market for the foreseeable future.

Dell Inspiron Zino HD (AMD Phenom II X4)

With its thoughtful features, Dell's charming little Inspiron Zino HD is perfectly suited to serve up HD content to your living room. We wish it had more general computing speed, and design purists will find the Mac Mini more sophisticated, but on balance we recommend it, especially to more casual home theater PC enthusiasts.

AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition

While the higher power consumption is a slight concern, the X4 955 proves that AMD is back in the performance game and ready to play hard ball. Bring on the next generation.

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge 13 (AMD Athlon Neo X2)

The ThinkPad Edge 13 is the perfect laptop if all you want is something simple with a decent screen size to get you online. It may be modestly specced, but it's also modestly priced, which makes it a good choice for those who don't expect their laptop to do everything.

AMD Phenom X4 9850 (2.5GHz)

AMD's new Phenom X4 9850 is overpriced and outclassed compared with its Intel-based quad-core competition. If PC vendors can use this chip to make cheap systems (as they did with older Phenoms), we might have nicer things to say, but as a DIY part at this price, we can't recommend AMD's latest quad-core CPU.

Maingear Prelude (AMD Phenom X4 9850)

The Maingear Prelude has the best bang for the buck among midrange gaming PCs. It also has a certain stocky visual appeal. It's missing a few features, and you'll have to jump through a few hoops to make upgrades, but on balance, this system is a great deal.
