In brief

Remember the time when MP3 players were the must-have items? Well, Sony does, but unless you're a Walkman or Sony aficionado, you're probably unaware that the Japanese giant is still churning them out.

The latest Z-Series Walkman is fronted by a 4.3-inch touchscreen. Underneath the skin there's a 1GHz Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor running Android 2.3. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, micro-HDMI and USB 2.0. There's also a GPS receiver and an accelerometer built in.

In addition to a 3.5mm headphone jack, the NWZ-Z1050 features a set of speakers. After a five-hour full recharge, the battery is estimated to last between five hours for video playback and 20 hours while listening to music. Supported audio formats are MP3, AAC and WMA, while on the video side of the fence the Z-Series can handle H.264, MPEG4 and WMV.

Outlook

The Walkman NWZ-Z1050 goes on sale in Australia in April 2012 for AU$269; only the 16GB model will be available locally.
