There seemed to be few surprises at this year's CES 2011 when Sony unveiled a set of TVs that looked almost identical to last year's Monolithic televisions . Like last year's models, you can also mount them at the swanky six-degree angle with or without the optional stand.

But there are several important differences with the NX720 series, due in April and May 2011, as it now includes a Gorilla Glass front for added protection and a number of internal upgrades.

The NX720 features Sony's new X-Reality picture engine, which is an upgrade from last year's Bravia Engine 3 and is "designed to optimise and process incoming content to deliver brilliant picture quality — whether it's 3D, HD, SD or low resolution internet content".

The television includes Sony's Internet TV, which features dozens of on-demand channels delivered by Ethernet or the on-board Wi-Fi and also includes Skype compatibility. TrackID enables you to look up the song that's playing on the TV at the time, and the XMB (Xross Media Bar) enables access to Sony's Music Unlimited streaming service.

Other features of the TV include a Dynamic Edge LED backlight (though the 40-inch version is simply edge-lit without any dimming), Motionflow XR 200 for smoother pictures and integrated 3D with two sets of shutter glasses thrown in.

The NX720 will come in three different versions: 40-inch (April 2011), 46-inch and 55-inch (May 2011). Prices are yet to be announced.
